    2024 Summer Blockbuster Movie Pool

    Back for yet another year, it's the Summer Blockbuster Movie Pool!

    Below are 20 movies set to be released this summer. You need to make two lists:
     
    List 1: Choose 15 of the 20 movies and rank them from highest to lowest according to the domestic box office gross you think each movie will make through its first 4 weeks (28 days) of release. Note that you're not trying to leave out the 5 movies you think will do the worst; just leave out the 5 that you feel least confident about ranking. Also, you don't need to guess how much money they'll make - just rank them. I'll be using boxofficemojo.com as the source for how much money each movie makes.
     
    List 2: Choose 15 of the 20 movies (doesn't have to be the exact same 15 as your first list) and rank them from highest to lowest according to the rating you think each movie will have on rottentomatoes.com after it's been out for 4 weeks. Again, you're not necessarily trying to leave out the five worst movies.
     
    Scoring: Your two lists will be compared with the actual ranks of the 15 movies, and your score will be the sum of the absolute values of the differences between the rank you gave to each movie and its correct rank. LOWEST score wins.
     
    Tiebreaking: In addition to your two lists, pick any one of the twenty movies and post exactly how much money you think it'll make domestically, in dollars, in its first 28 days of release.  If two or more people end up with the same number of points, the person whose dollar figure is closer to correct (on a percentage basis) will be ranked ahead of the other.  If that still results in a tie, then the person who posted their entry earlier will be ranked ahead of the other. Also, if two or more movies end up tied in box office gross right down to the dollar (pretty much impossible, but just in case), or end up with the exact same rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the ranking of those two movies will be set to whatever is more favorable for each individual person.

    • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24)
    • The Garfield Movie (May 24)
    • Bad Boys 4 (Jun 7)
    • The Watchers (Jun 14)
    • Inside Out 2 (Jun 14)
    • The Bikeriders (Jun 21)
    • A Quiet Place: Day One (Jun 28)
    • Despicable Me 4 (Jul 3)
    • MaXXXine (Jul 5)
    • Twisters (Jul 19)
    • Deadpool & Wolverine (Jul 26)
    • Harold and the Purple Crayon (Aug 2)
    • Trap (Aug 9)
    • Borderlands (Aug 9)
    • Alien: Romulus (Aug 16)
    • The Crow (Aug 23)
    • Kraven the Hunter (Aug 30)

    Deadline: The last day you can post your lists is June 5th, 2024, but any movie that has already premiered must be left off your lists. So, for example, if you enter after May 3rd, you can't put Fall Guy on either of your lists because it'll already be in theatres.
     
    Editing lists: You may edit your lists after they're posted, but only up until the release of any movie that appears on at least one of your lists. Since time of entry is a tiebreaker, if you edit a list, make a new post stating that you've edited.
     
    "The Adjustment Bureau" rule: Movies' release dates are not set in stone. If a movie's release date gets moved past September 30, 2024, and you have it on a list, it gets removed, and you get an additional number of points equal to your average points per movie on that list, rounded to the nearest whole number.

    Prizes:  There will be some. TBA. We start with 3 Criterion DVDs, and the top three finishers each get one selection from that list. Additional prizes will be added when or if we hit twelve, fifteen, and eighteen entrants.

    If you're new here, we used to run this pool where I put up a list of 20 movies coming out this summer, and people rank them based on predicted box office take and critical reception. Then the pandemic happened. Then I started running the pool again last year, and it's back again in 2024.

    In the past, I missed putting some movies on the list that should've been there (e.g. Bridesmaids) and put some movies on the list that should not have been there (e.g. My Life In Ruins). So, for the past few years, the selection of the borderline movies has been up to you.
     
    I already have 18 movies selected.  I'm looking to fill the last 2 spots.  The top 2 vote-getters in this poll will be included in this year's pool.
     
    You basically want to vote for the movie that you think will end up having the most people talking about it.  Like, the kind of movie that if it wasn't on the list, we'd be thinking "Oh man, how did we miss that one?"

    They should show the real footage but with hilarious sound effects added.

    Seriously though, if they're advertising that they'll show the footage, they should show it. My first thought was I'd be surprised if they could do it without Punk coming after them with lawyers.

    I know you know this because you were there, but in case it didn't come through on the stream - Priest was taking verbal shots at Slim J through the whole match. That's a big part of the reason why it was my MOTN. I was invested in supporting Slim, a lot of the crowd was, and Priest used that to his advantage. "You people didn't care about him until now," "Maybe Tony was right to fire you," "I'm better than you because I didn't lose my job," etc.

    So Priest had me actually mad about what he was saying. (Then he started wrestling and all I can do is think "fuck, he's so good".)

    edit to add: Slim J, for his part, came off as extremely motivated and obviously great too. I know it's happened so many other times with so many other people for whatever reason, but it's crazy that someone as good as he is right now doesn't at LEAST have a secure spot in a major company.

    Here's something that I'm sure didn't come through on the stream, and probably only the people sitting around me noticed. The person right next to me brought their daughter to the show, who I'm gonna say was around 4 years old, and during the main event she was on her mom's phone, on TikTok or something. So for some of us, for about 30 seconds, the very intense Makabe-Thatcher matwork was accompanied by the sounds of Scatman's World (possibly sped up a little). When it stopped, somebody was like "No, keep playing it!"

    Pro wrestling, as we all know, is weird and dumb and wonderful.

    I don't mean this as a slight to anyone who went on before intermission, but everything after intermission was incredible. Slim J vs Adam Priest was my MOTN but you could pick from lots of others and I wouldn't argue with you.

    Also this was my first live show since pre-pandemic, and I got to say hi to quite a few people that I haven't seen in person in literally years. Flew in just for this show and I'm very happy I did.

    Just made it to my hotel now (4 hour flight delay, argh). Was supposed to go to Palermo, but it's 20 minutes away, not a ton of time for me to get there & eat before the show starts. Sorry Johnny & others.

    On my way to the DEAN show. Flight to Philadelphia was supposed to leave at 11 am. Customs line was the shortest I've ever seen it, and I'm at the departure gate by 8:30 am. Unfortunately the flight has been delayed to 2 pm. So I woke up at 6 am to spend 5.5 hours sitting at my departure gate.

    (I could have put this in the DEAN thread, but it's not the "Complain about your flights" thread)

    So, I AM actually gonna be handing out wrestling crosswords at this show to anybody who wants a very unusual souvenir of the show. The crossword is sort of a collaboration - Phil was nice enough to write a chunk of the clues for it, so that's the tie-in to this board.

    If you want one, look for the guy in the black baseball cap and gray COVID mask.
