  1. I had to go with Hunt/Pezao simply because it had so many false finishes compared to the others. Whether it's high level MMA is debatable, but I know it was damn sure entertaining. So many heavyweight fights lack that Foreman/Lyle element. I am not saying that you can't enjoy KOTC level scraps, but you need a reason to have a division in the first place (meaning guys who aren't the champ and #1 contender). That is what separates the UFC HW division from Ron Sparks and Mighty Mo Best-of-Nine series.

TUF Brazil with Chael and Wanderlei will air exclusively on Fight Pass.  Yes, really.

Yeah I don't get this at all.  You have Chael Sonnen in Brazil doing training and the only way to see this is on the internet.  I mean you can't see this on ROKU (I think) and you have to go through hoops to see it on a pad or phone.    Apparently one of the Wanderlei team member suckered punched Chael already in the season.  Yet on Fox Sports 1 we get Canada vs Australia.

Magically, they announce that "sucker punch" news the same day they announce it will be on Fight Pass.

The plan all along was for it to be on Fight Pass since it's exclusive to Globo.

  5. Ariel occupies this weird space in terms of MMA media. IMO, there is little difference between someone like Helwani and Josh Gross. If you know Zuffa's history with Gross, you know they always wanted to have someone out there to be the spokesman for people like us. It's like when WWE started to break news on their website. He is suppose to be the link between them and us to show that there is no semblance of impropriety on their part. But once you have SCHEDULED breaking news, the smokescreen is entirely gone.

Both those guys can write, conduct interviews, do radio and television, and provide sufficient info when covering breaking news. The one difference between Helwani and Gross is Gross still likes to be the beat writer, outsider rebel type. The offer will still be on the table from the UFC to be THE guy as long as he is good at his job. However, Gross likes conversing with people that are on Zuffa's shitlist like Zach Arnold, Brent Brookhouse, and Loretta Hunt. There is a reason why a place like Sherdog can still have a turbulent relationship with Zuffa and get exclusive Dana White interviews. For whatever beef they have with competitor coverage and event credentials, Savage and Sherwood realize that type of content is what can maintain their revelance to MMA fans. They have bosses at Crave to satisfy and thus they know what line to draw. Gross can't do that and that is why he is freelancing right now. There is no cushy long-term gig in MMA right now like Helwani has where you can stick it to Zuffa and be the Edward R. Murrow of MMA. There just isn't one with how the sport is. When they're hot, you're hot. When their popularity levels off, your work levels off. He'll still get calls to do radio when a big PPV or Fox show happens, but that's it in terms of something outside the norm. Maybe a guest appearance on a Bellator hype show, but you can't make money off that.

Helwani realizes all of that, but he's not a shit disturber. However, you cannot act like he is just some ignorant guy. When the WWE Network/CES presentation thing happened (it was that or the UFC's own presser for FightPass), he basically wanted to compliment the WWE network without outright doing it. People (fans and other MMA journalists/bloggers) jumped on that as him dumping on the WWE Network without actually reading what he wrote. People have to be able to read between the lines without jumping down someone's throat at every waking moment. Like they would be Billy Badass in the same spot and suck off Vince McMahon when there is no spot for that.

No one but the most invalid of invalids needs to be reminded who won and lost the civil war. Cletus talks about the war of northern aggression as an attempt in historical revisionism to give his side "legitimacy" for their effort. You squash that shit as soon as they shoot off about how it was merely to preserve "states rights."

Actually I agree. It was about States' rights. The rights to own people.
As soon as they say "states rights," you retort with "The right to do what?" 99% of them will usually stutter and muster out something about "not taking every order from the central government." The more intelligent ones have heard your retort before, and follow up with "economic sovereignty," with a smug look on their face. You stare them dead in the eyes and ask "economic sovereignty for WHO?" and still with that slight grin of contempt, go "property owners." Finally you end their mental gymnastics exhibition with "and what type of property was at the heart of this economic sovereignty?" At this point, they'll reveal their (obviously) true colors and just drop "niggers," or try to save face final face with "ownership deeds." At this juncture, you can pursue further, questioning what the deeds entitled them to, but by now, they're too embarassed at being exposed as a bigot, and you're mad that this is 5 minutes of your life you'll never get back again. But you feel good, because bigots need to be put in place.

I once stumbled upon a "review" of Ken Burns' Civil War doc on a Civil War collector's forum and what you've written was basically what was said in a nutshell.

  7. My state gave you a series of mini Hitlers: James Eastland (from my home county), John Rankin, Theodore Bilbo (responsible for a good portion of the New Deal despite being an absolutely despicable little human being), James K. Vardaman, Paul Johnson, Ross Barnett, JP Coleman (a friend of good ole JFK), John Stennis, and the GREAT Trent Lott.

  8.

Rousey dominates everyone they put in front of her.  She's the biggest positive news story of the UFC.  She's spearheading a new division that is catching on with more than just her fights.  The TUF women's fights, as flawed as they were, beat the TUF men's fights.  And unlike Weidman, she has personality and no question marks about her wins.

And all that has nothing do with Fighter of the Year

  9. Ronda Rousey.

Yeah. If she was included, it'd be hard to not vote for her as well. Even in terms of "story of the year" she's certainly right there at the top. Her two fights/championship defenses gathered tons of attention, and her coaching/TUF season got more TUF attention that several recent, and even current seasons of the show.

Ronda's wins were not good enough. Yeah, she would be up there in the voting for "Most Polarizing Figure of the Year". Fighter of the Year? Not this year. She beat Carmouche. Carmouche then beat a fighter who should be at 115 or 125 and then looked very unspectacular against Alexis Davis, Then, Rousey beat Tate again. It's a good win but Tate was coming off a loss to the person Ronda should've been facing. Her competition for 2013 is a combined 1-3 in the UFC. Even though she contributed two of those losses, the strength of schedule definitely isn't there compared to the others. She would have been like the ninth or tenth out of all the available candidates. If I included a seventh person, does her two wins beat out Belfort? Faber? Aldo? Browne?

  10. For anyone who is privy to a WO subscription, Helwani did have a very open interview with Meltzer and Alvarez a week or so ago where he was pretty critical of tomorrow's lineup. He thought it was pretty underwhelming and Aldo/Lamas should have been on this card instead. It was about as honest as I've heard Helwani be in a while. I don't know if this has anything to do with the rumors, but it would make some sense.

  11.

Someone mentioned The Wire and how they were afraid they wouldn't love it as much as everyone else because they'd be watching it after hearing how it was the greatest series ever. I've only watched half of the first season and while I enjoyed it, I share the same sentiment. I also think that when you're watching the show live, it benefits if you have friends (or the board even) who also watch the show and y'all can watch it together or talk about it the next day and all that.

That's why it's best to jump on the Boardwalk and/or True Detective gravy train now.

That's exactly what I did. I'm almost done with season 4 of Boardwalk Empire.

  12. I thought she was great as Lydia mainly because they didn't go overboard and make her a badass. Thus, she didn't have deliver any forced lines. It would have been easy for them to go that route and give her a whole backstory, but they kept a lot of stuff mystery. They didn't tip their hand and have a bunch of Czech people show up.

  13. The case has always been made that no matter when the deadline is, the majority of the ballots show up at the end of the deadline.  If you go December to December and have the deadline in early January, you get the results now.  You go January to January, the ballots show up around now, and the results come out in mid-February, and nobody gives a shit about 2013 in February.

MMA is a little different. The late December show was the de facto Wrestlemania big show for the UFC in 2013. If you wanna skew votes wildly, including the 2012 UFC NYE show and not the 2013 one would be the way to do it. You wouldn't do that with Wrestlemania because I would imagine that is very integral to the voting. The same would go for the 1/4 New Japan Tokyo Dome show.

    From the Observer:

Cain Velasquez, 32, won more based on timing than anything else

    Yeah, that's dumb as shit.
