  1. Even though they have a good relationship with Zuffa (perhaps main reason for running in Vegas multiple times), I don't think Ali likes WSOF being the feeder league/freshen up your gimmick 80s territory promotion. If guys know that they'll be in the UFC after two or three wins, they'll make up their own schedule of when they fight. The belts don't mean anything so why run and try to win/defend them. The logical thinking of "well, we can bring back guys every two to four months" doesn't work here. WSOF is clearly trying to branch out and do regional stuff in other places to make money, but Ryan Ford isn't going to draw anyone when he makes it to a national broadcast. The lure of probably being on NBC once in a blue moon does nothing for them. If Zuffa had bought Strikeforce before Hendo left, CBS isn't really going to be the difference maker like it was when Silicon Valley Sports was in play. More than likely, Hendo would have stayed or went somewhere else if he wanted more money.

  2. To add on to what has already been said, he was so awesome in Hollywoodland too.

"Whose goin' wipe the blood off your hands."

"....My hands? I'm in da picture bizness."

Yes you were, Bob. Yes, you were.

  3. I think for a lot of characters (Iron Man, Cap, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Thor, etc) doing an origin is fairly necessary because the broader movie going public doesn't know those stories.

I didn't say you couldn't acknowledge certain things in a solo film, BUT I don't want it to be the whole movie (meaning the key action scenes are saved until the end when the character is finally their persona). I liked MoS for what it was, but did we need Zod to explain the background of Krypton's destruction in a dream flashback 20 minutes after Jor-El just did it? I know that's Zod side of the story, but we wasted some precious minutes of action.

Even though I probably won't watch Thor twice, at least they didn't spend 35 minutes on the entire mythology. You would think Branagh of all people would do it, but he didn't. People would have been bored out of their minds.

For Cap it makes sense, but I wasn't bombarded with the Green Lantern "here's Hal, here is Abin Sur, here is poorly done CGI'd sector thats need protecting, here is Sinestro, and here are the training sequences". I was more bothered with reanimated Toby Jones explaining some bizarre New World Order on the same device you keep freshman comp papers on in Winter Soldier, but that's a completely different grievance. Anyway, the objective shouldn't be how much shit can we squeeze in two to two and 1/2 hours. At the same time, you don't have to keep re-explaining stuff over and over like in MoS. There is a fine balance that can be found. If you bypass the origin film, there isn't the pressure to figure out what needs to be covered. Plus, I don't have to watch 80 minutes of pointless storytelling. We get the sense of how these are going to end. In a team/group film, you can hit the key points of the character important to the narrative. No one walked out of The Avengers (or Thor) because they didn't go into every important detail about Hawkeye.

If the narrative is good, then you can get into the whole background of the sectors, the power ring, and the Guardians of the Universe while allowing whichever GL it is to be a superhero. Running through that in half of a movie (again) would be insane for the casual moviegoer.

  4. It'd be easy to get whatever the first movie with Bats/Supes wants to accomplish out of the way and then figure out who has enough personality for their own movie or another joint character project. If you have an Aquaman cameo and he doesn't click off the bat, why would you put yourself in position of being in pre-production of an Aquaman solo film just because? If we can eliminate the origin film and just save it for two scenes per character, I would be so fucking happy.

  5. I wish they would give Ser Friend Zone and Dany better dialogue because it would make me care more about the One Nation Under a Slave Liberation Groove Tour. Jorah is all setups while Dany just kinda knocks em down. The first two seasons, it was quite tolerable. Now we're approaching groan inducing. He's not much of an advisor as she decides to do what she wants to do while he sternly disagrees yet obeys.

  6. If it was a solo Batman movie, I would agree. But if they have no interest in doing the Marvel Studios "2 solo movies each for 2 yrs and then group film the 3rd yr" setup, then I don't think it matters. DC is basically cheating and doing a World's Finest film and Justice League film in two straight years.

  7. Cyborg vs. Manhoef II is indeed going down today at Gringo Super Fight, but Combate will not air it because of their agreement with CABMMA. Basically, the commission didn't approve of Manhoef's medicals. The promoter chose to ignore the commission and go on with the show without the commission. Brazilian MMA, ladies and gentlemen. Still ghetto as ever.

  8. OH MY GOD THE COUNSELOR IS INSANE.

It's a must watch. Cormac McCarthy must have been rolling on some awesome peyote when he wrote that thing.

And God bless Javier Bardem. Diaz having sex with a car gets all the buzz, but Bardem is given the Herculean task of narrating it with a straight face. I would have needed a thousand takes to get through that.

For some reason, I feel I may have to reassess how to watch Ridley Scott movies in the future. He's like a gajillion years old now, lost his brother not too long ago, and a bit out of touch with modern filmmaking. But that's what makes you remember his name (and his brother's) unlike a lot of listless scrubs who also make terrible movies. Their movies in the last 10-15 years are basically if Hype Williams decided he was Peckinpah and also loved Vengeance is Mine. With that said, there were still a ton of negatives to The Counselor. However, I can probably find a few positives somewhere in there.

Negative: Cameron Diaz flat out stunk. Very few women have had this terrible of a performance in a movie that didn't have hardcore penetration. If they didn't ADR her, she would have won all the Razzies.

Positive: She had sex with a car and that's an interesting visual nonetheless.

Negative: The super dry monologues which went on forever. Was McCarthy aiming for 9th grader who has lots of free time on his hands with the screenplay?

Positive: It all ended with Brad Pitt's head popping off like a cork in the crowded streets of London. Then, a medic casually (AND I MEAN CASUALLY) picked it up and placed it on top of his remains. If I could go to Hollywood and give an exec a script while I was in 9th grade, this is exactly how it would end.

Negative: The wardrobe choices were....very....exotic? Definitely interesting. Everybody is dressed like a bad stereotype.

Positive: I must say Ridley can choose a cinematographer. Wolski is amazing at his job. John Mathieson (literally the only positive thing you can associate with 47 Ronin) and the late Harris Savides did great work with Ridley as well. So the costumes were ridiculous, but they looked pretty on film. That's a positive, I guess.

Negative: Whatever the fuck accent Toby Kebbell was going for should've been ADR'd too. Just abysmal.

Positive: Natalie Dormer is sexy when she doesn't have those wigs on during Game of Thrones. A little funny looking but sexy.

Negative: It suffers from the Savages "where the fuck is this happening and where are the authorities" effect. Movies featuring the Mexican cartel seem to not bring up the fact people are walking around committed brutal acts of violence and still freely showing their face in broad daylight. Even though Savages went for the Griselda Blanco (and boy did Salma want to be Griselda so bad) tip, it still didn't make a ton of sense. She would never be allowed to visit anyone in the states, sick or not.

Positive: If you forget this giant plothole, there is such violence on the screen you need to take a shower afterwards. Fake blood everywhere.

Negative: Fassbender and Hayek's homegirl Penelope Cruz had zero chemistry together. Like thrown together WWE lower mid-carder/diva who has nothing to do bad.

Positive: Penelope Cruz is not a good actress, but she tries and wasn't as bad as Cameron Diaz. Worth a C+ in my book. Fassbender tried his best to muscle through the sketchy dialogue.

If you want to kill two hours and just like absurd movies, this is one you probably want to check out.

  9. Dana's strategy of getting Phil to promote himself worked, but not for Phil. He ran into his physical match in every shape and form. I didn't like his body language after round 1. Anytime someone hits you and you basically do a complete 360 turn, that's not a good sign. Plus, that's asking for your opponent to hit you in the back of the head in exchanges. Davis' game relies so much on strength that he will still be in the top 5-7 for awhile but never come close to matching what his outlook was four years ago. Everyone isn't going to get straight torched on the ground like Prado and Boetsch. If your strategy is based greatly on the amount of resistance you face, you're going to be DEEP shit. You also saw that with Fili. So much of high level MMA is based on adjustments.

  10. Channing Taum is good in dramas and comedies, but a complete cypher in action movies.  It's actually kinda interesting

Channing Tatum and the girl in White House Down have to be one of the most unrealistic father-daughter tandems in cinematic history.

But yeah, I don't think Jupiter Ascending is going to change that trend at all. That's probably why he wants to produce stuff like Magic Mike.
