There are several examples, but how many of them outright better than the original? I don't think any of the people who were Tiger Mask after Sayama had the profound effect on wrestling in that gimmick other than Sayama.

I mean there were like 25 people who were Lord Humongous including Sid, but the most popular version I believe is Jeff Van Camp. The original one was played by local Memphis football star Mike Stark for like 2 or 3 months before being replaced by Van Camp.

Mr. Wrestling II? EDIT: On second thought, doesn’t count as he and Wrestling I were clearly presented as separate acts, so that’s more a Lucia successor type situation. Ignore.

I was thinking Mox could comeback, and turn heel. He was always heading in that direction, and he’s a massive Funk mark.

I have kind of thought Mox would first come back to fight Punk for (in the spirit of the heel always believing he's right) using Mox's personal situation to get cheap heat. Those two just feel right soaked in red in bunkhouse match with kneepads over the jeans and Merle Haggard shirts.

Crazy how much time was spent on the Undisputed Era in nxt and now they are all together here.

Not to derail a thread about a great show, but when KOR debuted one of my initial thoughts was how - for all his insanity - Vince McMahon is 100% in the right to change these guys's names and own the IP on his programming. Here he is now with all this equity that WWE put into these guys, all debuting on the other channel using the same names and same mannerisms. I totally get it.

So many awesome matchups for KOR in AEW. Can't wait.

  4. With the book seemingly now closed on Roman, Paul Heyman is in kayfabe the greatest manager in modern American wrestling history right?

Between Brock, Punk and Reigns dude is Nick Saban. Yes there was the occasional dud or misfire (Axl, Cesaro) but I can’t think of anyone else with sustained year+ long runs with multiple clients.

I agree with most of that clip, including the bit where they talk about how Dominik Mysterio would have been better served by going to AEW, but my mind is boggled by the idea that his character's failure when compared to Hook is just WWE's fault. Hook and Dominik could be used as the absolute textbook example of the difference between great wrestling screen presence and irredeemable anti charisma. Hook has managed to come across as a magnetic cult character by standing around looking mean for 95% of his screen time, to the point of becoming a meme. Dominik has always seemed like an awkward, gangly rich teen whose Dad has coaxed him away from Fortnite for the night to try and do something constructive with his life. He's AJ Soprano without the Slipknot t-shirts.

If he'd gone to AEW they'd have given him a big debut tag match with Rey and then hustled him off to Dark with Brock Anderson for however many years it took him to sprout a personality, or at least come up with a cool mask. I don't listen to the Bryan and Vinny show, so I don't know if they're regularly that wrong about a thing, but even as someone who didn't start regularly skipping Raw until the last couple of years, I can't envisage a time where Dominik wouldn't be a one man fast forward prompt.

Totally agree with this take. Additional supporting evidence being the success of Steiner in the very same WWE. I believe this is a “it’s the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s, not the X’s and the O’s” situation.

  6. They totally need to keep Hook as the enforcer who only wrestles as a special occasion when Taz gets pissed off enough to SEND HOOK. Like the 2021 version of Mr. Hughes is Taz’s 180 pound kid, and in the best way. Getting that “oh shit, [babyface] done fucked up now” reaction.

  7. I had the wrong side of the bet on Taz’s kid having 1,000% more pro wrestler DNA than Arn Anderson’s kid.

Hook jumps straight to the S Tier of pro wrestler offspring along with Steiner.

If anyone other than a Supernova Heel Cody beats Page for the belt it's a missed opportunity. You can't buy this kind of heat.

Oh man, I know that dissecting the Codyverse is probably the next-most ill-advised move to make in a Dynamite thread after bringing up JR, but…

I’m not sure what kind of heat it is? Like, the fans are in on the bit. They are booing Cody like they react to OC’s devastating kicks. He’s like the Hunter Pence Signs of AEW right now.

It’s great and I like everyone else am having a good time with it, but I wouldn’t label it “heel heat” in the traditional sense I don’t think. I don’t know?

  9. Good MJF/Punk segment but let that be the start and end of the show opening promo in this promotion.

Chicago vs Cody was great. I don’t know where “John Cena with a wink” (by both the performer and the fans) goes or how you make money with it, but an entertaining Codyverse is an improvement.
