Wait, was GWF on five days a week? I remember catching it on at my Grandmas who had cable, but I didn’t realize it was on all week. Was it just the same episode repeated five times?

I don't think it lasted more than a few months but yes, they had five fresh hours of TV every week.  Harlem Heat got their start there too.  Cactus Jack was also talent on their first set of tapings.  I remember them pushing The Patriot as the Hulk Hogan of their federation.

  2. The Apter magazines opened my world to the other federations, and Pro Wrestling This Week was the TV version.  Federations and talent who had never have gotten the exposure were introduced to kids like me.  I even knew about Savage injuring Steamboat with the bell weeks before it aired.

I cross-posted this in the Finkel RIP thread also, but while I am sure at the time it had to do more with Hogan than Finkel, it's still a testament in some way that Howard's post-match announcement of Hogan as the NEW champion was used to start the intro for WWF's All-Star Wrestling program for the next two-and-a-half years, long after Hogan was the "new" anything.

All-Star Wrestling!  That's what it was.  I kept looking at Championship Wrestling intros and swore it opened with Finkel.

This is where I tweeted about hearing Finkel give maybe his most famous "AND NEW!!!!!" ring announcement.  That man was a god damned treasure.

Hogan beating Sheik is THE moment.  Any time Howard said it again was an attempt to recapture it.  Hogan-Sheik is actually one of the few matches where I've probably seen the post more than the actual match.

    Dynamite would be a shoe-in.

Brian Pillman maybe? Art Barr? The last days of ECW? Perry Saturn's descent into drug addiction? Scott Hall? A full-on Jake episode?

ESPN did a Scott Hall one a while back.  It was the first time I learned that he killed a man working at a nightclub.

Black Saturday could be a good one since most of those involved are still alive.  The steroids trial would be an obvious one.  An Eddie Gilbert one would be fascinating.

Falling into another Great Depression will probably kill a lot more people than the virus.

I do believe once this passes, the average lifetime lowers, and not because of coronavirus victims, but because of the anxiety and stress, and the people who needed medical attention and were too afraid to go to a doctor or hospital to get it.  Real life is still happening and those that need help are putting it on hold.  And a lot of them won't be able to.

Outside of Koko/Mountie, the '91 Rumble is pretty good. Shoot me, but I like Warrior/Slaughter. Yeah, it's not a technical masterpiece, but the surroundings made me enjoy it. Everything Savage, the commentary and the crowd's utter hatred for Sarge.

This actually inspired me to go back and watch the show again.  Warrior ripping up the Iraqi flag has got to be up there among the loudest pops of all time.  And the Rumble match was fine but Jesus, almost everyone is treated like a megastar.  Kerry Von Erich's moment has passed but when he comes out it's like we're suddenly at the Sportatorium circa 1984 again.

  8. I get the whole right to privacy, but it is incredibly irresponsible to announce someone that is a public figure has the virus without saying who it is.  Rudy Gobert visited schools the day before he tested positive.  They were all shut down immediately.  And I had to think it helped make a bad situation not become worse.   Someone made a Michael Cole joke.  Let's say it was him.  How many people do you think he comes in contact with in a day?  40? 50?  Do you think he'd remember every single one of them?  And I'm not singling out WWE.  The NBA keeping the players who tested positive a secret is a joke too.  I hate Kevin Durant but I respect that he at least admitted it.  Whoever tested positive in WWE is clearly someone that could end up shutting them down.  Which obviously is their bigger fear.  Then, you know, roster members dying.

Speaking of Rumble '91 and that six man... The Rockers vs Badd Express match from RR91 is fucking outstanding. With all the love in the world to Savage and Steamboat, I think it was the best ppv match in WWF history up to that point.

I fucking love that match.  I've always considered it one of the best WWE opening PPV matches of all-time to this day.   That crowd was molten too.  The Gulf War had just started and there was a lot of anxiety and stress and you can tell the crowd needed a release.  Much like today.  I'll also say that Big Bossman vs. Barbarian match for its time was awesome.  It was promoted as a nothing match and they both brought it.

After watching this year's Wrestlemania (GRONK PRESENTS PART 1), I just picked another Wrestlemania at random that I had no memory of, and ended up on Wrestlemania 13.

    4. The Chicago Street Fight -- Great. One moment where somebody from The Nation handed a 2x4 to Hawk when no one was looking, but it was an amazing brawl. All over the place. Bloody and messy and weird.

People say WM13 is a one match show, but I think the Street Fight is very underrated.  It has a more chaotic feel than you get out of WWF matches at the time.

Also if you pay attention in the beginning, a future Colt Cabana can be seen in the crowd throwing punches at Hawk.

I forgot to mention, William Regal's haunting tribute on the Chris Benoit RAW Tribute show. Regal's intelligent and knew something was up and so did Chris Jericho watching that, it wasn't going to be good.

13 years ago I remember exactly where I was when Regal gave his tribute.  I actually posted my horror when it happened on this board which shows you how old I am.  You just assumed they were all murdered by some unknown group or it was carbon monoxide..or SOMETHING, then Regal gets a little cryptic in his comments...and he just doesn't look right...at all...and I just knew "Oh My God...Chris killed them."  I only finished watching that RAW out of denial.

  12. This show was the epitome of being handed lemons and making lemonade.  I thought AEW was going to die a death without fans to cater to, and this was far and away the least depressing live show of any kind I've seen.

Referring to the next show as "on the next Dynamite" is an ominous sign though.

This is Smackdown at the Performance Center alright.

Despite that I did like the show quite a bit and got more into the empty arena vibe as the show went on. Also liked the relatively calmer interviews

I would argue it would be even stupider to have the live feed pop up and show them trading holds for an audience of nobody.  Just know where the breaks are and put the restholds in.

Well here's my question, is Goldberg actually moving the needle?

I'm not a huge Conor McGregor fan, but I can see why the UFC wants to freaking book him in a title match in every division. When he fights, other than maybe Khabib right now, he's their top global draw.

When Goldberg puts on a shit show like this, does it actually move the needle in a meaningful way?

Someone may have already said this I didn't read anything prior.  Nobody on the WWE roster moves the needle.  Goldberg moved the needle on Smackdown a little bit.  And that was enough.

  15. I'm sure this wasn' t the intent, but Rhea sure came off as an asshole, refusing to help Bianca until her music hit and even then...she slowly...did some posing...and THEN helped.

That being said, I'm a big fan of the heel kicking as much ass as possible before the face can make the save, instead of the usual "face music plays, heel freezes and just stands there."

I can't remember where I heard it, maybe Prichard's or JR's podcast, but apparently Eddy was in a really shitty mood that night and absolutely did not want to be there.

Eddie was in his Rey feud and did not want to lose to anyone.  I get what he was trying to do (I don't want to be here, screw you all, I'll ruin this match) but it didn't work.

Can a show with Malenko/Guerrero on it really be the worst show ever?

Yes.  I have almost no memory of that match, not to mention the best guys in the world can still have serious letdowns.  Chris Benoit wrestled Eddie Guerrero at One Night Stand 05 which at the time was one of the best received WWE PPVs ever and you could argue that may have been the worst match on the show.  It was absolutely the most disappointing.
