I found the Wrestling Observer Yearbooks online the other day. Owen was flat out called the 3rd best wrestler in the world in the Observer in 1987 (by the readers, for the record.) WWF picks him up, does nothing with him, but as a kid I LOVED The Blue Blazer, but once he's treated as a loser, I stopped caring. Hey, guess what hasn't changed after 30 years?

I'll counter that with Jimmy WHO? He was basketball's saviour Sunday...

People have long speculated that the long line of "scufflin Hillbillies" is Vinces aversion to his upbringing. Also supposedly Vince loved the Johnny B. Badd gimmick and really wanted to bring him in.
I don't get that because you look at how Hillbilly Jim was brought in, Vince was going to make him a MAJOR star. He was literally one of the first LJN figures, and he was on the Rock 'n Wrestling cartoon. He lasted three months before he got injured and he barely ever wrestled again. The only legit angle he took bumps with was the Manager of the Year Award, and he only did tags or six-mans on TV thereafter. The only singles matches he had were usually on Prime Time, and they were short. Ironically, he's the only WWF guy I know who is undefeated against Andre the Giant. (Studd quit and Jim replaced him and took the countout or DQ wins.)
I take it more that Uncle Elmer SUCKED, Cousin Junior quit randomly, and Cousin Luke was arguably worse.

Kushida: #1 Babyface in the whole world
Is it that hard to give a face that kind of push? Beat the shit out of a heel...then REALLY beat the shit out of them. I'm more into Kushida now than maybe any moment ever.

One game.
Tip your cap, move on to Friday.
Considering how bad LA has been in game 1s...this series is over.

Anthony Davis with one of the biggest shots of his career.
Which is kinda sad if you think about how long he's been in the league.
I was watching on Sling which was two minutes behind for whatever reason. I knew LA won, Davis hit that shot anyway and I was still all "HOLY SHIT!"

Congratulations to the LA Lakers for winning the *2020 NBA Championship before even winning the WCF. THAT'S how it ends? I can see the Lakers being Randy Savage and the Nuggets being the Dynamite Kid. The Heat might be the Junkyard Dog...except that team actually does have more talent than JYD but they still lose...

I only brought it up because Bulldog pressing Ric Flair over his head at Rumble 92 and then just slamming him has always been my one weakness to the match (aside from Savage eliminating himself by accident but getting to come back anyway.) #3 sounds about right in this scenario.

Here's my problem with the delayed vertical suplex: once you've got your opponent up in that position, with that kind of control, why would you just drop back for a regular suplex? Why wouldn't you hit a brainbuster, or a jackhammer, or drop them on their face?
This is why it drives me up the wall when Tomohiro Ishii does a delayed vertical suplex. His finisher is a brainbuster!
If you can press slam someone in a battle royal, why aren't you immediately eliminating them?

Watts also could not get Dug-gan vs Doo-gan straight.
Crocketts could never figure out if it was Wahoo McDaniel or McDaniels either. Neither could most of the roster then...

Dusty mentioned in his autobiography that Roberts was a friend of his who was a casino executive who also "specialized in startups" (Believe Roberts was a higher up for Caesars for a time, and ran their hotel/casino in Lake Tahoe). IOW, a money mark who also had a knack finding other money marks.
Read somewhere that DDP got the Florida job by doing a Dusty impression over the phone.
By all accounts, Dusty really wanted the PWF to replace the AWA as the "third national wrestling company," but the investors quickly tired of it and Dusty signed with WWF.
You're not wrong about quickly since Dusty was fired from Crockett in January 89 and was in WWF by early-June.

Is there something new about the Angle/WWE story? Meltzer and others have discussed Kurt’s addiction and the Wellness Policy meeting in great detail over the years and WWE even uploaded video footage from it (right before someone in management regained their senses and had it taken down). Unless I’m missing something, Trevor Dame’s reporting a story I’ve heard at least a dozen times.
Pretty sure whoever posted it didn't know it was common knowledge. I saw the link and knew what it was all about without even clicking. BTW, that also shows you how out of touch WWE was even then. Angle all but admits he's a prescrip drug addict and they STILL POSTED IT like it was no big deal.

Wouldn't call it essential but his match vs. The Great Antonio is something you should go out of your way to see if you haven't. This big fat guy dicks around no-selling everything. So Inoki puts an end to it by beating the legit shit out of him.

Did he come out to Voodoo Child at the time?

Honestly, I hope this ends the NBA season. And I say this as a Lakers fan who wanted them to win it all. The boycott would be an empty gesture if they just took one or two days off and then went right back to it. If you're done because you're done with this bullshit, be DONE.
Also...let these guys go home. The bubble is pretty much a human zoo.

I don't know how much stock you put into them but both defensive win shares and defensive ratings were Giannis' and it wasn't really close.
It was a joke. Gobert LITERALLY shut down the league because he got coronavirus.

Looks like Giannis is going to be MVP + DPOY. That ought to send some folks into a meltdown.
Stealing someone else's joke but...
Giannis winning the Defense award is bullshit. Rudy Gobert should have gotten it. He shut down the entire league.

I think the proper question is who popularized it and made it common. Hogan's "Eye of the Tiger" changed everything. It was perfect for him and others followed. Except a lot of them used that same song and it didn't fit at all.

I always wondered why Vince took forever to air Demolition winning the tag titles back from the BrainBusters, and that story might kinda explain it. Demolition beat them October 2 and the title change didn't air until November 4 (Tully had already been fired by then.) Usually they air title changes immediately to keep continuity on house shows, but the Busters spent the whole month defending a title they had already lost. Curious if Vince was trying to keep them on and would have voided the title change if they stayed.

Global Warfare had a Steiners vs. Money Inc match that was apparently so boring, one camera panned to the crowd and left it there. And so did the director. You have a crowd shot for at least 30 seconds and finally Bobby Heenan blatantly calls everybody else out on it. Which was not edited out and was then sold on video.
And maybe I'm wrong, but the only time I ever heard the word "defunct" on any consistent basis was in an Apter mag. I say that as a compliment.

The Disasters beating Money Inc. for the Titles was filmed and featured on a Coliseum Video that was released a year later. JR does play-by-play for it even though he wasn't in the company when the match happened.
That reminds me of that Coliseum Video 40 man Battle Royale that Jim Ross called with Kerry Von Erich in the match. Who was dead by then.

They probably didn't tell Tully shit until after the match thinking he'd walk then and there.
Tully and Arn were leaving after Survivor Series anyway. Firing Tully was pretty much a spite move to keep Crockett from wanting him back. Which worked.

Tully was fired after this match too. Even though other matches aired later, this was Tully's last WWF match and aside from one shots, the end of his mainstream career. The SNME where Heenan fires the Busters had been taped the day before. No way was Warrior giving him much of anything.

First Smackdown I've watched in almost a year, I enjoyed it too. That ending angle was poorly conceived. The refs are all clearly heels. Roman beats the shit out of Brawn with a chair, nothing. Uso wallops Roman once, the entire lockerroom empties like their houses are on fire with their kids inside. Uso hitting Roman with a chair and screaming "I LOVE YOU" was a cool little moment.
