  1. The crowd was really up for the H.O.T. match - probably because they haven't had to put up with their antics as much. I really thought that someone (Kondo, mainly) was going to turn on Kaito's team to establish H.O.T. in NOAH (not a good idea, just an idea).

It was a long show. I think the opening matches started before 3:00 and then there was a break before the rest of the show and  didn't end until after 8:00. If the title match closed the show it might have gotten a better reception but maybe the crowd would have been burnt out by then.

  2. Spoiler

Apparently he broke his ankle early in the match? Even before that, he looked out of it when he was coming to ring. This should have never been booked to happen.

Edit: This is apparently where it happened but him just trying to get up there is sad.

  3. Show just finished.

    Spoiler

Ibushi beat Marafuji and it was just slow and plodding. Ibushi could barely get up for some moves. I really think he shouldn't be wrestling right now. Something is wrong.

Thankfully, rather than let him mumble into the mic postmatch, Jake Lee and Kaito Kiyomiya came out for closing promos. There was a staredown (hilariously, as Ibushi and Lee are in each other's faces, Kaito is just staring straight ahead until it is his turn).

In other matches, KENOH retained over Soya. Go Shiozaki came out to challenge KENOH. KENOH wants the match to be for the title versus Go's "I am NOAH" catchphrase.

Kaito is booked stronger than SANADA against H.O.T. The NOAH crowd are not burnt out on H.O.T. so there was copious booing.

The Great Sakuya debuted. She just debuted. There was nothing special about it.

Ulka Sasaki lost his debut to Sugiura.

Go beat Satoshi Kojima and debuted a new group called Team NOAH and no one cared.

I missed everything between that and the junior tag three way won by Tadasuke and Yo-Hey.

  4. Not really. Then again, it's seven in the morning here so any damage assessment will be done throughout the day plus technically the coast is still under a tsunami advisory. But the epicenter of the quake was not near Tokyo and it seems like everything there will go on as normal.

  5. Hiroshi Hase will be in the Japan and possibly world news as he is the governor of Ishikawa prefecture which got hit by a large earthquake late in the afternoon on New Year's Day. Currently the area is under a high alert tsunami warning, with residents being told to immediately evacuate.

  6. Several groups in Japan announced the formation of an industry group. It includes NJPW/Stardom, AJPW, DragonGate and all of CyberFight.

    United Japan Pro-Wrestling

    Spoiler
    Quote

New Japan Pro-Wrestling today announces that it is one of nine organizations that will constitute United Japan Pro-Wrestling, a new industry group representing professional wrestling in Japan.

Without an industry wide group for professional wrestling in Japan, the unprecedented crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic made it all the more clear that there was a need to consolidate and express accurate information and best operating practices between promotions, as well as to communicate effectively with national and municipal governments. In a bid to better anticipate and adapt to societal changes in the future, nine Japanese promotions at the forefront of pro-wrestling in the country will be be part of a collective industry group (henceforth ‘the Group’).

The members of the Group will maintain their individual business identities and competition in the marketplace, but the Group will provide a space to discuss issues that concern the industry at large, and to exchange information with an interest in maintaining its growth. The formation of the Group will be marked by an event on May 6 2024 in Nippon Budokan under the banner of United Japan Pro-Wrestling.

    Mission statement

To further the presence of pro-wrestling and its cultural merit in Japanese society at large, allow professional wrestling to contribute further to cultural and sporting sectors, and work toward continued health and prosperity of the industry.

    Background

The COVID-19 pandemic made it apparent that there was a lack of communication and unified approach to event guidelines, and no common point of contact between the industry and national and municipal governments. There was also a desire to discuss issues surrounding wrestler health and safety (including in their online presence), to create a pipeline to other sporting organizations and to further the image of professional wrestling through issues of corporate social responsibility. There was a shared desire between members of the Group to continue existing competition within the marketplace while also sharing relevant information and know-how on these and other socio-economic issues.

    Core tenets

    1. Unity and integrity. The Group will be the representative spokesgroup for all of professional wrestling in Japan.
    2. Representation. The Group will be the public facing symbol for the collective whole of professional wrestling in Japan.
    3. Continuity. The Group will have a continuous presence and activity in the future.

As a result, the existence of the Group will be made known worldwide, and its members will be actively engaged in actions of merit.

    Activities

    Governmental communication and requests

Strengthening connections to other industries and sectors

    Sharing resources and practices

Including those related to wrestler health and safety, such as the provision of financial support for wrestlers while injured, and to offer compliance training. Group members will also consolidate event data for historical archive purposes.

    Monetization
Any proceeds from the monetized use of iconography shall be split among the Group members. Joint events and festivals will be held.

  7. There are currently three tiers of men's pro basketball in Japan - the B-League, B2 and B3 born out of the ashes of two competing leagues, the National Basketball League and the Basketball Japan League. There are over 50 teams between the three leagues and currently it works on a soccer-esque relegation/promotion system. University basketball in Japan is not really a thing although most of the players in the leagues played at their schools. So teams have youth teams - again, similar to soccer. There's a limit to how many foreign players a team can have and how many they can play on the floor at one time although there are ways around that. The level of foreign players coming over is not super high - they aren't throwing around money like teams in China and the Phillipines were doing to get actual former NBA players on their rosters.

I don't actually know all that much about the upper leagues since I only really follow my local team though. B3 is sort of it's own thing with a separate website and no streaming of games on DAZN. Instead, they have a cheap streaming service (500 yen for the basic plan) that usually uses a stationary cam with no commentary. Although as wrestling fans, we should be used to that.

As for the name - while in English, calling something the B-League is probably not ideal, it's taken from how the pro soccer league in Japan is called the J-League and was in fact named by the same person. Other sports have followed. Pro volleyball is the V Premier League. The breakdancing league (coming to the Paris Olympics!) is the D League.

  8. https://rebellions.jp/

The thing that caught my eye is that their Project R, which includes Ice Ribbon, a pro handball team and Earthfriends Tokyo Z, which is a pro basketball team who got demoted to the B3 league for this season. They'll be coming to my neck of the woods to play our Yamaguchi Patsfive in January (they used to be called the Patriots - it's a whole thing).

  9. 1億 (oku) equals one hundred million. 10億 means a billion so 14億 means 1.4 billion. Google translate often gets a bit weird when you add 円 (en or yen) to a number. It will give you 1,478 million which is 1.478 billion.

  10. It definitely is. Even the Japanese wikis say that when NOAH stopped airing, it ended 55 consecutive years of wrestling on terrestrial NTV.

If World Pro Wrestling can survive past five more years then TV Asahi can equal and eventually surpass that even though it's a 30 minute show that airs with a time slot that varies depending on which prefecture you live in. Where I am it's on at the choice time of 1:16 AM Mondays.

  11. Bishamon win the World Tag League for the third year in a row after forty minutes, the last ten of which were basically El-P going one on two. But the end result is that Bishamon want a re-match at the Dome so that Bishamon vs G.O.D. is on for Wrestle Kingdom.

El-P and Hikuleo are also putting their Strong titles on the line so that may end up unifying the belts and ending the Strong lineage.

  12. Tag league finals are set for Sunday: Bishamon versus El-P and Hikuleo.

Ren Narita is already the smartest heel in wrestling as he and H.O.T. attacked Honma while Honma's dumb tag partner, Shota Umino was coming out of the back entrance through the crowd.

This Sunday's Frontier Zone (New Japan's term for dark matches featuring outside talent) will have current Kyushu Pro champion Kodai Nozaki and Aso-san against someone (not announced as of right now).

  13. Ice Ribbon, Stardom, Actwres Girl'z and PPP Tokyo will be involved in the Tokyo Comic Convention coming up this December.

The convention runs from the 8th to the 10th. Stardom is doing something on the 8th. Actwres (Actually Actring, which is slightly different) and PPP Tokyo on the 9th and Ice Ribbon on the 10th.

Some Stardom wrestlers will also be in Singapore next week for the Bushiroad Expo Asia.
