  1. I don't know if anyone cares but I am retracting the "-1 is really distracting to matches because of his movements" argument I've made before. I've come to the conclusion is that he's drawing the eye just based on standing on the ramp and being on the same physical plane as the ring. This is due to being my focus being drawn to QT Marshall standing on the ramp and that motherfucker barely moves.

I think its due the the ring being shot on the hard camera with no vertical angle. So it can create the optical illusion that the people on the ramp look like they are in the ring.

  2. What's interesting to me in these lists of Less, More, Enough are the guys that haven't been mentioned. Now this could be for a number of different reasons such as not covering the entire roster (because obviously you wouldn't list everyone) or lumping them in the Enough category before it became a category. But it does seem odd to me that The World Champion hasn't been mentioned by anyone despite the small sample size of commentators. MJF also seems missing considering his leadership role in a faction. This would lead me to believe that they at the very least aren't at the top of mind in terms of considering AEW's talent roster. That seems really odd to me considering their importance to AEW programming.

Miro referring to God in his promos adds a really interesting wrinkle to his presentation. I think it adds a level of gravitas to his delivery like "Oh he's invoking Jesus, he must really believe this."  While some might argue that its a face thing to say your prayers and take your vitamins, I think the national discourse has changed to the point that the general populace no longer sees worship as something inherently good.

I'd be the first to say, "well fuck it, at least it's not WWE where the same two guys work each other every week" (and you of all people know I would!).  But damn, there's got to be a middle ground between Lashley/McIntyre and not working a match in your division on TV in 9 months.

See this is why the comparisons to WWE don't work as a defense for AEW's choices. It assumes a binary option between doing what WWE does and the opposite. There are a spectrum of choices for any promotion on all matter of things. We cannot then say AEW is good because they don't do the same things WWE does. There are more than one way to make a mistake. I don't think its good faith to respond to critique of AEW by saying that WWE is worse unless someone holds WWE up as "doing it right". As no one has been willing to pull up an example of anyone who is actually holding up WWE as a well run organization, one would be arguing in bad faith if they ascribed that belief to the other side of the argument.

Not to start a political argument but one could say "Joe Biden is a bad president" but it does automatically mean that person is a rightwing Trump supporter. They could be attacking Biden from the left. They would have to hold up Trump as the better option for one to open up that lane of dialogue.

Digging these promos on Dark Elevation.  Not that they’re all on point, but with this addition AEW is starting to make Elevation regular weekly viewing.  I’m Still skimming a lot of it, but enjoying these improvements.

I really thought the Santana and Ortiz opening promo was really effective in that super quick  "Do your mission statement in 90 seconds and get out". I now put the notion to the floor that their tag team name just be The Best, The Best, The Best because it actually shortens pretty nicely to TB3, would make a pretty good T shirt even if you spelled it all out, and would be better for ring announcements than Roberts just saying their names.

Hobbs bodyslamming that guy 7 straight times got right into that 'stop, stop, he's already dead' and I was right there for it.

EDIT: Scorpio Sky's "I'm going to embarrass you" squash was also effective in that he's not really good at destroying people but this was a good step in working towards him being a bad person in another way. Not all squashes have to be the same to work.

  5. I would love for you to point me to the people saying ‘I love WWE’ anywhere on this board. Maybe I misread that mammoth 9 post Smackdown thread or the 2 somewhat positive posts out of 17 Raw thread.

"Wind up merchant" apparently and no, I'm too lazy to post that much.

It’s not that hard, ask me when the last time Sammy Guevara had a singles match on Dynamite.

-Woof. I was on board with a lot of what you were saying until you starting going off the deep end. Don't mistake me for someone out here saying AEW is perfect and if you don't like it you're wrong. That ain't me. I'm out here saying I like what AEW is doing. I'm very upfront about that. But I'm not trying to get YOU to feel exactly the same as I do. And that's why @Gordberg is starting to go a little mad having to refute @Goodear. He's not just telling us that he doesn't enjoy AEW. He's actively trying to say we're fucking stupid for liking it.

Who said that? Me?? When???? This is news to me. I don't think I've ever said someone is stupid for liking anything. If you like AEW, no one is stopping you. You have constructed a vision of me in your head where I am fuming over here at anyone who likes the show. Most weeks, most of the people here like AEW and I almost always open with my own thoughts without bringing up other folks. If anything, I am the one who gets "yelled at" for not remembering 3 minute squash matches and not being completely literal. I don't know how looking at the reality of FTR working tag matches became a hot button issue but here we are.

    Quote

His argument on FTR matches is hey let's not count 75% of the matches they've had, for the purposes of making the end result he wants to show. Why do six man tags not count as matches? Why do Wargames matches not count as matches? The end result still shows what he was trying to say without having to disregard reality (Young Bucks have had more matches than FTR in the last 3 months period, regardless of configurations). So my Britt Baker take was just as dumb as his to demonstrate that point. If you exclude everything that doesn't support your point, well guess what... the results are gonna support your point.

The topic was tag matches so I brought up tag matches? I know I'm a monster and all but... yeah? I even added qualifiers (the last tag match on Dark, the last six man), which if I was trying to get a gotcha on whoever my enemy is (whoever that is?), I could have just left those off. Let's take your Britt Baker example since its fun! What is Britt Baker good at? If you said "Well Goodear, she's a pretty good worker and a pretty good talker." I would say, "Sure." So then if Britt went 4 months without a promo, would that be a good idea? I would say no. Now ask, "What is FTR good at?" The answer for me is "have traditional tag matches". Is it a good idea then that they don't get to have any?

    Quote

-Lastly, bringing up WWE isn't gaslighting. It's the easiest and most direct comparison. I don't like A. I prefer B. Even when B makes missteps or doesn't quite hit the mark, I still prefer it to A. There's ZERO gaslighting in those statements. Because I'm just laying out my opinion. I'm not trying to get you to disbelieve your own eyes and change your reality. That's crazy. I'm literally just saying I like B better than A. So you may want to take a few steps back. In trying to prove that a cult exists... you're really starting to sound like you're in a cult on the opposite end of that spectrum my dude lol.

I still don't know why people keep doing the WWE comparisons when no one *check out my internet lingo* stans WWE as being any good.

I don't know what you're trying to demonstrate here? The Young Bucks have had more straight up tag matches than FTR? Okay. You mean the champions of a division get more TV time than challengers not even involved in the title scene? Oh wow that's like crazy man. Thanks for the stats?

    Conversation was...

    a) FTR doesn't work a lot of tag matches

    b) You don't want the talent to get overexposed

Me) This is the number of tag team matches they've actually had and the last time they were on television in a tag team match. As a comparison, here is what The Young Bucks (the obviously most pushed tag team on the show) are doing. This factually substantiates that FTR doesn't have a lot of tag team appearances during this period of time.

Your counter argument is that FTR doesn't have matches on television because they are not involved in the tag title scene. This refutation fails because of two reasons. One FTR can't get involved in the tag title scene because they don't get to have matches on television. And two, there is no reason AEW shouldn't have more than one tag team feud or angle at a time since their tag roster is so big. So even if your largest focus is on The Bucks, there is no good reason that other teams are doing nothing during this period.

EDIT: The really interesting thing is that this applies to more than just FTR. Santana/Ortiz and The Best Friends are also suffering from a lack of ring time. That's three of your top four tag acts getting virtually no time for months.

They should have Rick Knox do a Nick Patrick gimmick where he becomes the official ref of the The Elite if he's gonna let the Bucks endlessly double team.

I hate evil referee gimmicks so much. Why would Tony Khan the character allow The Bucks to do that?

It's in the Observer. Basically, most people DVR'd the show and watched it later. Nielsen tracks that as well.

In accordance with the +7 ratings, I would be interested to see the number trends for the show and see where that lines up. I have to be honest, it feels like goalpost moving by The Observer who is trying to run cover with a number that they've never referenced before to hide the ratings downturn.

To be clear, I'm not going "Hur hur hur, these ratings suck and so I feel validated!" I'm going, "Oh shit these ratings suck and this timeslot sucks and OH GOD this is terrible timing." AEW clearly recognizes it and is running their bigger names out earlier in the show like The Bucks and finishing with less important fare like a Inner Circle promo and Dustin-Nick. This is a lamentation on my part, not a victory lap.

  11. Stats are fun.

FTR haven't had a normal tag match since beating the Hughes Brothers on 4/22 on Elevation. They had a six man with Spears on Dynamite on 3/24 against The Blondes and Dante Martin. Their last normal tag on Dynamite was on 2/17 against the Sydal Brothers.

The Young Bucks by contrast have had 8 normal tag team matches in the same period all on Dynamite or PPV.

I'm ready for them to start the build on Sammy's coup when the Pinnacle business is over with (assuming it's not already).  Two years is a long life for a stable/facgime/etc. and the Inner Circle, being literally as old as AEW Dynamite itself, is close enough to that. The face side of the ledger ill suits them and Santana/Ortiz have been conspicuously absent from tag championship contention, I'd hope trimming down to a Guevara/Santana/Ortiz trio would facilitate them getting that look

I don’t think they can right to one coup right after the MJF one. I would have been fine killing the Inner Circle at Double or Nothing just to clear them off the faction board. Sammy has had what 2 matches as a baby face (both the faction matches) It’s way too early to flip him back already.

Name names. People that are actually signed too, not just the people they've brought in during the pandemic. Because I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of people we see right now on Dark/Elevation won't be there once they hit the road again. As much as I want KiLynn King to be signed, I don't think she's going to on the road with them (even though Red Velvet did give their little group a name on Twitter).

I know how much people love me going through the roster but I found 20 names of people on AEW’s roster page that could be moved on and wouldn’t mean a lot (I didn’t count Mel, Emi Sakura and Yuma Sakazaki because they’re never around already).

Aaron Solow, Alan Angels, Alex Reynolds, Angelico, Austin Gunn, Brandon Cutler, Brian Cage, Colt Cabana, Colton Gunn, Jack Evans, Jake Hager. Joey Janella, Kip Sabina, Luther, Mario Stunt, Michael Nakasawa, QT Marshall, Sonny Kiss, Big Swole, Penelope Ford.

  14. Seems like another very skippable show for this terrible time slot. The Bucks have over exposed themselves this title run with match after match after match. They really need to work in FTR or Santana & Ortiz or even Best Friends into something just to shake it up. The multiple Inner Circle bake sales have worn out their welcome. There’s just only so many permutations of interviews they can do.   The Cody tag match is a little interesting because there’s a couple neat ways to go with it (Lee getting a push would be good, Ogogo going over Cody would be good). The less interesting roads would be Cody going over or Johnson doing the job for his team. But there’s actual options there.

  15. The Friday shows are just at an awful spot and are just coming at the worst time as the are killing the go home and follow ups to Double or Nothing. The ratings are just going to tank at that time slot no matter what and AEW isn’t really counter programming with must see television. I don’t think there has been anything for 3 weeks that would have popped a rating in their regular slot much less this terrible one. Honestly, they’re losing momentum.

  16. I’ve been noodling the multiple belt thing and it’s really a bit of a double edged sword. On one side, you want your person who knocks off Kenny to do so when Omega is at his highest point. If you have him lose those other belts first, clearly someone has already solved the Omega equation before someone in AEW did. On the other hand, I think it lowers the impact of the loss for Kenny if he can retreat to his other titles rather than face the sense of loss that should come with a title defeat. I think best case scenario is that Kenny loses all of his belts in rapid succession in the course of a few weeks one after the other. I would personally start with the AEW title if I had complete control of the situation but I obviously don’t know if the promotions have that level of cooperation.

Count me into the group that thinks less reigns is more for the betterment of AEW. I also grew up in the era where being the WWF Champion meant something.

The issue with current wrestling is that they have too many matches. I don't think they need to do Jungle Boy vs Omega until their summer supershow. I think they're wasting the build for JB by having his shot less than a week from DoN. That feels rushed... And then what are you going to do after that?

It's also my gripe with Cody... He's doing this Nice Hogan with a Monster of the Month system... But where does Ogogo go now?

I think a month to really heat up Jungle Boy would be great. Put him over Gallows and Anderson in singles as Kenny scoffs at the idea of this punk kid beating him. Give JB a visual fall over Omega counted by Marko Stunt or something as a counter to a run in. Then have Kenny literally escape with the belt in the title match either from getting disqualified or something that is not going over JB clean.  You can then transition to Jurassic Express against the Good Brothers as a secondary tag feud and have Jungle Boy circle back to beat Omega after he's dropped the belt and get the rub there.

Ogogo had enough injuries brought up in that match with shoulders, ribs and being blind in one eye that they should be able to rebuild to a healthy Ogogo getting another shot at Cody. They could do a run up of training montages making Ogogo look even more ready. They would also need to hammer Ogogo over as either the unquestioned star of the Factory or get him away from them since QT doesn't seem capable of carrying his end as a second.  You then do the Rocky III build of Ogogo being a monster primed to kill and Cody being weakened by his multiple creative outlets weakening his focus.

  18. I'm fine with short reigns being a few months if its a memorable couple of months loaded with content. I loathe "win the belt one weeks and lose it your next appearance" especially for a babyface as I think it kills the catharsis you get from the win before the fans can even enjoy it. Instead of enjoying the new title holder, you often get the rematch announced very quickly and everyone can sort of see the reset coming and it just deflates everything. This is especially true if your heel had the belt for an extended period and the crowd is ready for a change of focus and they don't get it.

Stadium Stampede II will be the main event when it should be Shida/Baker. I can also see Young Bucks vs. Mox/Kingston going on last.

If you main evented Shida-Baker I think you would be compelled to do a double turn because I don't think Shida is a strong enough babyface to carry a main event match against Baker who I think we can agree is the choice to go over. I don't know if anyone can close a show with a heel going over with as much crowd support as Baker is likely to have.
