Kayla Ard is a better woman that all of us.

I know we like to make with the jokes about coaches getting fired in the locker room or on the airport tarmac after a bad loss, but that's seriously horrible.

    She handled that really well.

That said, she was 24-90 in four seasons and 5-25 this year. They'd just lost by 36. Firing her before the press conference, and then letting her go out to do it, was not cool though.

Thanks, this picture completely represents my point. Again, this criticism based on age is a bit ridiculous considering the precedence of common casting in film, television and stage of older for younger. I can't even think of an example of bad age casting because I generally find it pretty easy to adapt. KOTFM was obviously no exception.

An off hand comment likely said in passing by Scorsese, who I have no reason to believe was lying, doesn't make for much of an argument, but it does offer some insight into where you're coming from. It also fuels an assumption I have - Marty is more than likely getting some backlash from Marvel Universe/Comic Book fans for his public disdain of those type of movies.

I would suggest Scorsese puts a bit more thought into his casting than you presume.

The run time was a hang-up for you, I get it. 'Used poorly' seems at odds with the ppl I've talked to and many, many of the top critics, or ones I care to read, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. I like movies that breathe, and I'm happy this one did. I love JFK, but that pace and editing is what worked for that movie. It doesn't mean it would work here with this far more sensitive story they were telling. It does help me better understand what you were wanting, but, again, it's not the film they were making. I trust (one of the all time great editors) Thelma Schoonmaker alongside Scorsese's choices. And for good reason. The goodwill they've built makes it easy to try and understand their choices before complaining. That said, I didn't have any complants. I thought this movie was beautifully performed, shot, cut, etc. I also thought it was exhilarting like many of the ppl I spoke with after seeing it.

Curious what movies you did think were great in 2023?

Don't really care if my "used poorly" opinion is at odds with top critics, to be honest.

Yes, Hollywood tends to be a little off in their casting. Off by 32 years, not so much. But, since you mentioned critics, the ages being off is one of the most frequent critiques I've seen.

I'm not a Marvel movie guy and don't have any preconceived notions or criticisms of Scorcese or his movies. I also don't much care what movies he's done previously, just the one I'm watching at that moment.

Great movies in 2023? To be honest, didn't watch a lot of new movies last year. Godzilla Minus One was probably the best.

  4. The Coach K legacy of dirty players at Duke has continued past his retirement as Kyle Filipowski - newly-recovered from the court bum rush injury - tripped Harrison Ingram as Ingram ran up-court.

  5. No, do not expand the tournament. The only fix needed is to give autobids to regular season champions not conference tournament champions. I know that ship has sailed but it's the sole reason we get snubs and teams that don't belong. If we did 32 regular season champs plus 36 at-large, no one with even a hint of an argument would get left out.

You know the Pats are drafting a QB but unless they give up a ton it will be the 3rd or 4th best one

I think they'll take McCarthy and end up being happy with him if they let him sit for a year.

It didn't get across the horror to you. But to a lot of ppl, myself included, it most certainly did get across the horror of the situation. You complain about the running time, but want more murders? The book was the basis for the movie. It's not exactly uncommon practice for a screenplay to focus on certain elements or parts of the original material. Drawing attention to a story for one to do their own further reading is pretty welcome.

So what does a 40 something year old in the 1920s look like? Deniro is far from a kindly old grandpa in this movie - subtlety goes a long. long way with such a character. I'd say the same about the entire picture.

What does a 40-something look like in the 1920s? He looks like a 40-something, maybe early 50s. There are photos of the guy. He didn't look *80*, which DeNiro most certainly does. Here he is at 48:

Meanwhile, you've got Scorcese saying dumb stuff like his friends "didn't even realize it was [DeNiro]". LOL, sure thing. I think he was cast - Leo too - because Scorcese was familiar with him and knew he'd get a good performance, not because he was the right guy for the job.

And, just so we're clear, I have no issues with DeNiro's performance itself. And I appreciate his dedication in legit learning the Osage language.

(sorry about the empty spoilers - it won't let me delete them)

The run time was an issue because it was used poorly. The overly-long fire scene - which could've been cut completely - I've already mentioned. Lots of other places the movie could've been tightened up that would've freed time to show more. I can do long movies - the extended cut of "JFK" that's like 220 minutes is a favorite of mine.

Although you seem to think I've never seen a movie based on a book before, or one based on real life, I am familiar with the concept. While it's not uncommon for movies to stray from the books or real story, it's also not uncommon for them to... not do that.

  8. 21 hours ago, HarryArchieGus said:

I'm gonna side with Scorsese on the running time and the inclusion of 'the fire scene'. Nothing about the casting was remotely atrocious. Ray Liotta is supposed to be 21 years old in Goodfellas, I didn't have any issue suspending my disbelief there and the same goes here. I think you might be amazed to find your age complaint relevant in a lot of films. Curious of how anybody would come to the conclusion that they undersold the horror of this story. Your reasoning suggests you were looking for a different story than what was being told. The book was better than the movie, ya don't say!?!

"The book was better" was absolutely not central to my critique. However, having read the book, I went in with knowledge of the real story and I just don't think Scorcese did it justice. Not when he's got 80-year old DeNiro playing this kindly old grandpa version of a 40-year old psychopath. Just... no.

How did they undersell the horror in the movie? Because the real story is anywhere from 60-100 murders committed by dozens of people across nearly two decades. The movie just didn't get that across.

  9. I have and use Facebook. I almost never post outside of groups or in reply to the posts of other people. I get a ton of entertainment from groups.

I have and never use Instagram. I created an account as part of a giveaway promotion. I don't really understand the appeal and find it incredibly annoying to use.

I have and never use Twitter. I think the concept is stupid and it's annoying to use.

206 minutes is what it took to tell this thoughtful story. What is a white-oriented film?

It absolutely did not need 206 minutes. At least 5 minutes was wasted on the one fire scene alone.

The casting here was atrocious. In real life, the Leo character was in his early 20s and significantly younger than the fed investigating the case. Having Leo play that character AND still keep the "son" dialogue from the fed was STUPID. Who calls a guy older than them "son" while not trying to be insulting? And DeNiro's character was at least 40 years younger than DeNiro. Portraying him as this kindly old gentleman was a misfire of the highest order. Good grief.

The movie undersold the horror. It focused on the one guy and his wife while doing a terrible job of showing how widespread the murders were and how much exploitation was involved ALL OVER EVERYWHERE in that community.

And, yeah, I agree with what the guy said about Gladstone's performance. It was fine. Nothing special, nothing revelatory or spectacular. Fine.

And, yeah, the radio thing at the end was very much out of place.

The movie was fine. But it was too long and did not do a good job of capturing the book. The book is 400 pages on unrelenting, increasing horror and disgust. It digs a deep hole and just keeps digging. The movie completely missed that mark.

    6/10 is about right.

  11. Nah. "I'm not saying it's wrong (but I'm still complaining and by bringing it up I'm actually saying it's wrong.)" If he truly thought it was wrong, he'd praise the changes or not bring it up at all. And it IS hypocritical. He's a guy who has bailed on multiple contracts to make more money, forced guys out so he can violate scholarship limits, and on and on. Yeah, it's all about the team to Nick - when it suits him. I'm sure Spartans players felt the team message really resonated as they practiced for the bowl game he ditched.

Kudos to Nick for recognizing he's too old for the modern dynamics. Seriously.

And I agree he's the GOAT. I think he's the greatest college coach in any sport ever. The results speak for themselves.

He actually started the season benched but eventually turned it up to be the Caps 2nd leading scorer this season (which at 20 goals is saying more about how shitty DC's offense has been this season)

Yeah, he's got just 34 points and plays only 14 minutes a game. 20 goals is nice but he should be a high 30s scorer every year. But he insists on being invisible for long stretches of games.

Mantha has the potential to be good but he's incredibly lazy. Still can't believe we got a 1st round pick for him, along with Jakub Vrana, who played great when he played.

  14. Nick Saban has done an interview where he explained his reasoning for retiring. He blamed the reaction from his players to their loss to Michigan. Said there were guys throwing helmets, etc., and he was upset by the lack of class and not by his failure to teach his players how to behave.

He then blamed NIL and, with not even a hint of self-awareness, said "it’s all about how much money can I make as a college player". It's ok, Nick, I'm sure when you left Michigan State while under contract, or when you left LSU while still under contract, or when you left the Dolphins while still under contract, that it had nothing to do with money.

Good lord, the hypocrisy. He should partner up Coach K and Tony Dungy and start "The Sanctimonious Gasbag Podcast".

The funny part is the UFL is not using the XFL kick off method but is going back to a more traditional version. No idea why, I think the XFL method both cuts down on injuries and is interesting/encouraged returns.

I do like that it encourages returns but won't teams just continue to bomb it out of the back of the end zone?

Also, how do onside kicks work?

More proof in how dumb the combine is:  apparently Tom Brady ran a faster 40 this year than the year he was drafted.  Unless he has been hanging out with Frank Thomas and Doug Fiutie recently, something is fishy

Brady is actually in shape now versus his own combine.  He probably hadn't run 40 yards TOTAL during his senior year at Michigan.

  20. The NFLPA has released their annual player survey of franchises.  KC ranked near the bottom overall in player satisfaction.  Complaints included that they are given stools instead of chairs in the locker room.  The Raiders ranked dead last in coaching (surveys taken before Josh McDaniels was fired).  The Patriots - yes, Bill Belichick - ranked next to last.  Players felt Bill wasted their time and didn't listen to the locker room.  And, as usual, teams are salty over the results.  Fact is, though, the surveys get results.  Jacksonville was trashed last year by players, mainly because of rats(!) in the locker area.  They ranked 5th this year.

I have never even heard of anyone being anywhere near Cam Newton without thinking that Cam is the largest person they've ever seen. People who have been covering sports for 30 years all have the same reaction. LeSean McCoy while discussing the fight said,  "I just saw him at the Super Bowl, and I had forgot just how big he is." Spencer Hall who spends his life covering college football said,  "I know Cam Newton isn't the largest person I've ever met,  but Cam Newton is the largest person I've ever seen." Bomani Jones said something to the effect of,  "if you heard a 7 year old upon seeing Cam Newton say, "who is that big motherfucker over there?" You would not be surprised that he cursed,  you'd be surprised that a child so young knew the correct technical term." I say all of that to ask,  "why do you think you can beat up Cam Newton?"

Cam is a huge human being.  I'm a big guy myself.  The first time stood next to Mark Rypien, was immediately struck by how BIG he is.  Like, significantly larger than me.  And Cam is bigger than Rypien.  I didn't have that same reaction when I was near Richard Fox, the former Gonzaga player, and that guy is 6'10" or more.
