What I find fascinating about Punch Drunk Love is that it doesn't ask Sandler to be much different than normal. A bit more subdued, but he's still playing the same basic character as in most of his so-called comedies. It's just the context around him is so different that it pushes everything into a different register and results in a really special movie.

Sandler was legitimately good in Rein Over Me. He's got the skill in there somewhere, he just rarely uses it.

    Watched some more movies....

Birth (leaving Criterion on April 30)

      Reveal hidden contents

Movie is pretty close to perfect despite its creepy subject. Nicole Kidman does a great job as a disconnected socialite who starts believe a kid’s story that he’s her dead husband. The movie does make you wonder how the kid thought of the scheme in the first place.

The director said this movie was about “eternal love,” but really it could be about mental illness.

The soundtrack is happy and hopeful which completely goes against the tone of the film (and is a wise choice).

This movie is almost Kubrick like at times (especially echoing Eyes Wide Shut) but it’s different enough to be it’s own thing.

Cocktail (leaving Criterion on April 30)

The movie is a warning about commercialism and how money shouldn't rule people's lives. Yet, it was made in the '80s where being superficial and money driven was simply acceptable. Reganomics in the movie just simply works. The movie starts out great for the first hour or so - when it turns serious, it turns bad. Tom Cruise has loads of charisma obviously but even he can't rise above the material.

If the movie just focused on bartenders becoming rich somehow, it would have been great. Instead, it turns into melodrama over a bet about a bartender bagging an older woman (which is really gross if you think about it). The women in the movie are bargaining chips until all of a sudden Tom Cruise's character realizes he has genuine feelings for Elizabeth Shue's character (who is the best part of the movie). These genuine feelings happen in the last 25 minutes.

So it's not the worst movie ever but it's bad in the sense that it has drama that wasn't needed.

Quo Vadis, Aida? (leaving Hulu on April 9)

      Reveal hidden contents

Devastatingly perfect. Probably should have gotten Best International Film at the 2020 Oscars over Another Round (but I guess seeing Mads Mikkelsen dancing does it).

The film tells of the despair and agony from the Srebrenica massacre and how a translator is helpless to try to protect her family from being taken away. You can see the frantic in Jasna Duricic (Aida) as she tries to find a way to save them and deal with the forced bureaucracy from Thom Karremans (Johan Heidenbergh).

The scene where the men are lead to a room and die is chilling. Not in what's shown but what's not shown. The scenes toward the end where Aida visits her old apartment and finally sees the remains of her family is tough to endure at times. The ending showing the schoolkids performing shows a lot in their faces - they are still recovering from what they've endured; some of the kids and adults can't even smile or enjoy themselves anymore.

Definitely seek out this movie before it leaves Hulu or find a Blu Ray copy.

Shue is the only good part of Cocktail. The movie's concept and plot are just so stupid and ridiculous. But she's so hot and interesting that you can forget all that when she's around.

I dunno, I'll take 15 & 5 and leading an NBA team to multiple conference finals, back-to-back NBA finals and a title over a lot of guys with better stats. And he didn't just have that impact at the NBA level either. He showed the same leadership in college and at the FIBA World Cup. The Naismith Hall is easy to get into, though. There's no doubt about that.

There's no denying he had a good career. But...

If you start naming a list of great guards, in order, you're gonna be way, way, way down the list before you get to Chauncey. There's room for you to be able to say, "yeah, that dude had a great career" without saying the guy was a HOFer. Chauncey is in that space for me. But, hey, good for him!

Basketball Reference had him an 84.4% probability, which is 94tth among NBA/ABA leaders. That's higher than a number of players already in the Hall, It's inflated somewhat by his Finals MVP, but was also a 5x All-Star, 3x All-NBA, and 2 x All-Defensive. That's not a bad resume.

    2nd team all-NBA once, 3rd team twice.

He's got a nice resume. I like the guy. I'm a Pistons fan. Of COURSE I like the guy.

But we're really, really reaching when 15 & 5 while never - or even coming close to - leading in anything gets you in the Hall.

I wonder how the game would have turned out if Angel didn't hurt her ankle at halftime.  She had a good first half and tried in the second but if fully healthy she might have drove LSU to a win.  Whenever they have a rematch in the WNBA it's going to be incredible.  Also, it's not lost on me that Caitlin Clark is fucking special.  She has the skills and the charisma to boot which makes me hopeful for her WNBA career.  I don't want to look too far into the future but with how she is now it's hard not to get excited about the impact she'll have on the WNBA.

Reese getting hurt changed the game for sure. Before that, LSU was killing Iowa inside at both ends. Reese went from 5-7 before the ankle to 2-14 after. Still finished with 17 & 20.

The first quarter last night was as good as it gets for basketball. Extremely fast pace, great shooting, great passing, blocked shots, the whole package.

The game lived up to the hype.

Dear almighty were we treated to something tonight with Caitlyn Clark. What a great night for sports. My soon to be five-year-old son knows who she is and calls her Twenty Two and I am so glad that he gets to watch her during his formative sports fandom years.

I thought it was more of a mixed big from her than a lot of others seem to think. Multiple lazy or terrible passes in the first half for turnovers and shot just 45% from the floor. But......

A whole lot of 3s and some (a lot of) amazing passes.

Overall, I'd say she played an excellent game.

today in baseball: Rhys Hoskins knocks in 4 runs vs the Mets and then a Mets reliever throws behind Hoskins and gets ejected.

also, the pitcher ran to cover the plate just in case the runner on first base was the Flash

94, head high and behind. Gutless play. Yeah, the slide from Hoskins was dirty (and incorrectly ruled legal - you're not allowed to roll like he did) but you just can't throw a pitch like that.

Basically what I'm saying is Dennis Rodman was a hell of a lot better at rebounding than Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain.

I once did the math and, you're right, he was. He grabbed a higher percentage of available rebounds than those guys.

Those soundbites were going to happen no matter what. Since they won she's just going to be vindictive whereas shed've blamed the "distraction" if they'd lost. You know, the distraction of her Streisanding a non-story to the nth degree and forcing her girls to lose focus.

Threatening to sue over an article she hasn't even read.

She is a garbage human being.

Elgin scored 63 points, Wilt stroked his chin thoughtfully, said "hold my bitches" and popped for 78/43. 👀

To give you an idea of the quality of play in that game, the two teams combined for 188 rebounds. Wilt and the Warriors put up 147 points while shooting 37% from the floor.

By contrast, the Spurs and Knicks combined for 96 rebounds.

Yeah Wemby is living up to a whole hell of a lot of hype, and it's scary to think how good he might end up being.

Yeah, he's not even near what he'll be. Good grief.

The Way Back - What's this? A Ben Affleck movie that's incredible that's NOT Good Will Hunting?

      Reveal hidden contents

One of the best sports movies I've seen. You end up getting caught up with the team and the way Ben Affleck coaches them to be in the playoffs. Yet the whole time what goes on in his life is affecting him. He gets fired by the school administrators due to his alcoholism (whereas most other schools would be like "fuck it, he's getting us people interested, we'll have him go on a leave of absence until he can figure things out").

Definitely watch this one before it leaves Peacock.

I watched this last night based on your recommendation. I think you liked it more than I did. I liked it but definitely wouldn't say "incredible". It's a recycled plot done well that avoids at least a few of the tropes of the genre.

I got a good chuckle out of the Affleck character working in constructing. "Aw, he kept the same job from Good Will Hunting".

    7/10.

Draymond just got ejected tonight. 3 minutes into the game for lipping off about a play he was not even involved in.

I guess the message of his cell phone ad didn't get through.

Also approved - a team now needs to just win one instant replay challenge to get a third one (it used to be you had to win both to earn the third)

If you're right when you challenge, your challenges should be unlimited.

Can’t wait for the refs to subjectively call these and bullshit extend drives for Mahomes and company

    To add to your skepticism:

    Quote

"The violation will result in a 15-yard penalty if flagged in games, but Troy Vincent, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, strongly implied last week that it is likely to be enforced similarly to the "use of helmet" rule, which typically leads to warning letters and fines in the week after a game rather than flags during play."

That's from ESPN's article on the rule.

Yeah, I don't like this rule change. And, like you said, I'm sure it'll be enforced in an "interesting" way.

at the risk of guessing, the Mulkey thing and her response has to be something where she's gonna be accused of using a bunch of racial slurs or something, isn't it?

There's apparently a bunch from former assistants. I imagine there will be stuff trashing her for how she handled the Britney Griner legal stuff along a myriad of stories detailing her as an arrogant POS.

I thought her quotes from the press conference were hilarious. She simultaneously complained about not having time to respond while also saying she'd been refusing to talk to the journalist for two years.

She's a piece of garbage so I'm eagerly awaiting the article.

Sure, that's a good explanation. But if you found out he was paid off, would you be all THAT surprised given how one-sided and blatant his favoritism was?
