Yeah watching their shows is pretty sad these days, even back in the pandemic when they were crowd funding I felt pretty apathetic, like if they die they die, always felt like they didn’t want to appeal much to a crowd outside of Japan. BJW Core seems like a very low effort attempt at a streaming service that just offers lifeless house shows shot with a single hard cam. Also I swear every Korakuen show I’ve seen in the last few years the deathmatches rarely go longer than like 12 minutes. They do so few epics compared to the 2005-2010 era and no action ever really happens, no creative weapon gimmicks, there’s just no fire anymore.

As a foreign fan it’s much easier and rewarding to support just about any other company in Japan. And pretty much every wrestler who’s been a favorite of mine left over feeling disrespected like Honma, Kasai, and Yoshihito. They dug their own grave by pushing Ito and Kobayashi over everyone for so long. Pretty much every new trainee they have go into deathmatches leaves within a year or two to go freelancer like Tsukamoto, Uto, Ueki, Drew, Sakuda, and maybe more I’m forgetting. They all seem happier in Freedoms. Drew being built up for a long time only to have him vacate the title was real shady, figured maybe it was Visa issues but he went to Freedoms immediately after.

Par for the course with BJW I’m afraid. I respect they have ran their business as such to stay in business buts it’s truly caught up with them now. There was a period when Masada was hot and clearly should have been positioned as the champion to chase and they refused to pull the trigger. They need a big crowd and blow away show on jan 2 but i don’t foresee either. It’s sad, the hour ‘death match wars’ tv show used to me my most anticipated arrival.

  2. Very sad to see the state BJW is in right now. Their refusal to trust foreigners or look at the big picture has resulted in a stale company, overtaken by Freedoms and barely scraping 300 fans at korakuen. Can’t see how much longer they can cling on

I had miso soup with pork and vegetables, smoked chicken breasts, potato salad, and two of the reduced-calorie Japanese energy drinks called Jungle Man that I can buy from the vending machine around the corner and have become my go-to morning-or-afternoon wrestle-watching beverage. That, or green tea.

I almost always do a conbini run the night before PPVs or big Dynamites. The convenience stores over here are THE BEST.

You can literally make your whole day in one trip to a 7/11 or Lawson. If you hit up one of those drunk I’d imagine you would leave with a whole weeks worth of groceries. They are indeed, THE BEST!

  4. A million stars for that write up DEAN! Uncle Dave should just do a cut and paste into this weeks issue.

Posey tapping a gusher so as not to be left out of the fun was the capper. That was Sheepherders v Fantastics levels of carnage, better than any ‘death’ match since Takashi Sasaki was BJW champ and the best field goal since Harry Kane took an 88th minute penalty. In summary, fuck and yeah

  5. A Sunday morning stroll and a great coffee in, this debate popped into my head; choose a year to go back to and travel around watching the graps. I’ve been blessed to be able to travel to Japan and the US many times for runs of live shows, but if I had the time machine, 1994 is where I would land.

The Super J Cup, prime AJPW title matches, AJW gearing up towards the dome, W*ING, the birth of IWA Japan, the rise of Michinoku, the height of FMW, ECW hitting its stride, WCW’s best shows before Hogan killed the vibe. Dammit, take me there now!

    Why did he quit though?

He and Vince/Hunter clashed over his booking. They told him to do business or walk. It was an ultimatum.

The point I was making is that his leaving WWE was because of backstage issues related to how he and his friends were booked. Now it appears the same issue is coming up in AEW with Khan/Elite subbing in for Vince/Hunter.

If it's a work it's a poor one as it makes Punk look like the whiny, unprofessional loser WWE always said he was.
If it's a shoot then Punk needs a good slap but I fear the Tony loves the Pipebomb era Punk too much to do anything about it.

I think you need to actually listen to Punk document the whole affair on Cabana’s pod and get the actual facts. Everything was documented, backed up and indisputable given WWE caved in, paid Punk everything he was owed and backed down from a court case they were going to get slaughtered in. He had every right to be bitter and broken when he quit that company.

I believe Punk was referring to one of the final promos Hangman and him cut on each other before their match. I don't believe he was referring to All Out. At least that was my interpretation, given the timing of everything.

Correct sir. Holy shit, BIx put 2 and 2 together and got 5, well I never. Try listening to the facts and doing some real journalism.

Punk has always been honest to a fault and I’ve never seen fit to doubt what’s he’s saying or believes in. Given the timing it’s hardly surprising he finally spoke his mind. Professional or not, it’s probably high time all this stuff was laid bare so we can all move the fuck along.

  8. Having re-watched the finals a couple of times I’m still captivated by how good it was. Just amazing storytelling and selling from both guys. Everything meant something, built to a climax and was followed up by a perfect sell. Something as small as Okada on his knees telling Will ‘you will beat me soon’ was just the chefs kiss. Ospreay leaving in tears should also be noted as it mirrors Okada when he fell short against Tanahashi. Nobody can touch NJPW for these memorable matches.

  9. That. Fucking. Match.

The drama, the selling, the ebb and flow. Both guys laid it in and delivered.

But, the wrong guy won and I think everyone in Budokan knew that.

To be positive, almost magical to hear the crowd find it’s voice. WK back to one night, just the way it should be.

See, my issue is what if Japanese fitness shop and gym and drugstore etc employees start assuming that all big bald Canadians are petty protein thieves? That will screw my life up!

Also, and it's related, anyone who enjoys schadenfreude should watch this Jeff Cobb press conference.

    Look, you’ve had a good run Gordlow…

Rough delivery but a great gag from Cobb

Sure takes a long time to get a flight out of Tokyo these days. Good luck with the ‘re-evaluating my life’s path’ for a few weeks before re-surfacing on some Canadian shit shows

  11. So Chicago is officially the pro-wrestling capital of the world right?

Only had time for two matches. Loved the shit out of Claudio and ZSJ. Zack’s stuff looks so good the crowd was biting on everything and Claudio looked a million bucks with the cuffs off. Just two great pro-wrestlers doing pro-wrestling stuff.

Oh look, it’s the flippy guy having another MOTY candidate. I finally think people are beginning to realise what an incredible worker Will Ospreay has become. He just knows how to mix the ingredients. The way the match switched into another level was masterful. Never enough to be hokey and edited perfectly to hit the climax.

Watching Nick Wayne Vs Osprey.  What's the general consensus on Nick Wayne? For someone so young I think he has light years of potential. Would rather see him stick it out on the indy's for a bit than TV but someone had to snatch him and I'm kind of glad it was AEW first.

He’s a helluva talent. That was a terrific match, the kind Ospreay delivers time after time with whoever he’s in the ring with.
If they could get Wayne into Dragon Gate for a year he would benefit immeasurably. But with his youth he’s a licence to print merch money. They could totally do a 123 kid thing all over again with him.

  13. More Miyahara magic tonight. 25 minutes gone in the blink of an eye. Nothing flashy, all impact, both guys laying it all out and in for the duration. Matches like that deserve sold out arenas going batshit down the stretch.
