  1. To add another team to the possibly worst of all time list (although it probably is that Caps team) is the 80-81 Winnipeg Jets.

Nine wins in 80 games, gave up exactly 5 goals a game. Managed 14 ties...I'm not sure, was OT in the regular season at this point?

Those early Jets teams had been absolutely devastated by the NHL/WHA merger. The WHA teams were only allowed to hang on to 4 players (two of which had to be goaltenders) and the team that had won the last two Avco Cups had been dismantled.

Notables on the team: Dave Christian led with 71 points (but was -54!), WHA-holdover and captain, Morris Lukowich led with 33 goals. It was Dave Babych's rookie year, he was -61, but had 44 points and would get much, much better.

Lot of future coaches on this team. The other Ron Wilson, Rick Bowness, Barry Melrose, Barry Long, Rick Dudley. And looking over that list I realize that they are all terrible coaches. Which probably explains a lot.

The goaltending, as you'd imagine, was turrable. Ron Loustel gave up 10 goals in his one start. "Best" goalie was Markus Mattsson; 31 games started, 3 wins, team leading 4.50 GA and the season's lone shutout.

Although, this did lead to the Dale Hawerchuk draft, so some good came of it.

Winnipeg got off to a bad start in the NHL.  Their first ever draft pick was a goon where as Quebec drafted Michel Goulet and Dale Hunter in 1979 and the Oilers first 3 picks in 1979 were Kevin Lowe, Mark Messier and Glenn Anderson.

  2. Who is/was worse: This years Sabres or the expansion Sens? Was at game last night (#16 of the year for me) and it was awful. Had stupid Rangers fans start crap with me because I was wearing a Gilbert Perrault Sabres jersey. People who go after visiting fans are (for the most part) cowards who only act because they have numbers backing them up. Told them the only reason they are here is because the coat hanger missed.

And this is non NHL, but the Danbury Whalers are having their home opener and banner raising at the Danbury Ice Arena on Saturday at 7PM. If you are in the area and want to have a good time check it out!

The first year Washington Capitals with 8 wins in 80 games takes the futility title.  Gave up an average of 5.5 goals a game that year to boot

  3. Also I went to Rams/Packers last year. The area around the building is filthy, the building itself is old and gross and the fans were outnumbered by Packers fans and the Rams fans that were there were lifeless. As much as the Vikings are evil and gross, at least their fans were into the game and loud and vocal. Their TV screens were hilariously inadequate though, it looked like a fifty inch TV.

Building is not even 20 years old yet.  Is St Louis resigned to the fact that the Rams will bolt first chance they get or is the team and city just too cheap to keep the place clean and presentable?

  4. I dont think the schools should pay the kids but if some local entrepreneur wants to pay a kid some cash to sign autographs or to do a personal appearance I think that should be allowed.

  5. Funny thing about NHL owners is their legal woes.  When Peter Pocklington got locked up they made a joke that 3 of the 5 owners Wayne Gretzky played for have done jail time.  Back in the 70's Leafs owner Harold Ballard got sent to the big house and country singer Anne Murray almost bought the Maple Leafs

  6. I am still not 100% convinced Bettman isn't a mole planted by Stern (who he used to work for) to sabotage the NHL so it didn't become a serious competitor to the NBA.

No he's not but when you consider the guy that hired Bettman for the job, Bruce McNall, was another con man old Bettman probably felt at home with Spano.  The NHL has always been run a little ass backwards.  They gave an expansion franchise to Tampa Bay even though no one had met any owners, had no plan for an arena and had the strong rumours that the mystery Japanese owners were really Yakuza gangsters laundering money

  7.

Not sure if any team worth its salt would trade for AP.  His age, injury past, and high asking price will turn off anyone in position to take him.

Atlanta, Dallas, and Denver are the only teams I can think of who may be able to use him correctly.  Atlanta is tied up with Steven Jackson and backsliding, who knows what Jerrah is doing in Texas, and I don't know if Elway would pull that trade.

    Dallas have no room.

Where's Gonzo anyway, that miserable worthless son of a shit.

Hiding somewhere claiming he is "busy" like most message board big mouths are when their team is sucking sewer gas.  If the Vikings were 5-1 you know he wouldn't be too busy to make fun of Jay Cutler's injury

  8. ACL tears are going down all over sports, not just football. I'd like to see how many ACL tears have been from a low hit though. The ones I've seen have been incidental - falling funky or tripping over a pile.

A lot of the ACL tears in any year have been from low hits.  People seem to be hyper focusing on the low hits now that the high hits are being watched.  I agree with the earlier poster.  With athletes being bigger and faster every year you are inevitably seeing more ligament injuries.

  9.

There has never and likely will never be a guy like Peyton.

    Jim Kelly says hi. . . .
Kelly was great, but he wasn't close to the level Peyton lives on. I mean, Manning has 3 seasons (not counting this one) of higher qb ratings than Kelly's career best (and a 4th that was only .2 behind it) and a 96.7 to 84.4 career rating advantage.  His career completion percentage is 5.4 points higher, and then you can get into the counting stats, where he is rapidly mowing down everyone not named Favre. Jim Kelly was a forerunner to Peyton in terms of running an offense, but he never did it nearly as well as Manning does.
Give him the pansy defensive rules and he might, oh yeah he played outdoors in cold weather too, unlike manning.
After our previous discussion, I thought you were a homer. Now I think you are a lunatic.

No he's just a troll of laughable quality

  10. He's MacT's boy and MacT isn't going anywhere.

True in theory but now they are saying Mark Messier is going to be doing some scouting and other work for the Oilers this season.  He apparently wants to be an NHL coach and do you really think if the Oilers suck out loud this year the owner wont think about bouncing Eakins in favour of Messier.

  11. Bradley - Marquez is this weekend and flying right under your radar.  What the fuck, guys?

Dude who got a questionable win over Pacman vs. Dude who KTFOed Pacman.

Smart bets are going with Marquez by UD, but I think that Bradley is going to get leveled.

And I am Nostradamus.  You guys that thought that Matthysse was going to get by Garcia shoulda read this thread!  That being said, there is no way that Garcia is ready to step up and face Mayweather.  I'd like to see Marquez fight Money after he beats down Bradley, but JMM will probably be set up to fight Pacman again if Pacman gets by Rios on Nov. 23rd.

Why would anyone want to see Marquez fight Mayweather again?  Dude didnt really win one second of their first fight.  He has even said he is not interested in fighting Money again.  Dont know if Bradley gets leveled since he has shown toughness but if I was a betting man I would go Marquez by a squeaker.

  12. The Bills actually bring back their most popular player from the last decade.

Great Moorman always needed to calm down on the field and remember he's a punter.  Leave the hollering for the real football players
