  1. Really the questionable part of this announcing it in the middle of Wrestlemania weekend when a certain amount of people aren’t paying attention or will forget it’s happening after tonight.

  2. Thunderbolt originally being from Iowa was sort of a surprise.

But not to be down on anybody in the business, Bolt going to the south after being raised in Waterloo might explain a little bit of him being more willing to say “hey that’s bullshit” in response to something that maybe a southern native wrestler would have been used to experiencing.

Then again, he probably wouldn’t be able to shake charges that Bolt and race is like Superstar Graham and Vince McMahon where if he’s being paid by a promotion, he’ll be okay at least for a little bit and if he’s not being paid, then

Graham was a preacher before wrestling and Patterson was one after wrestling. Both with promo styles that inspired various people to steal from them.

The closest I came to the sort of experience from the Bolt HOF speech was an Assemblies of God youth meetings and the balding 30 something who would go 30 minutes after indicating the sermon was almost over was nowhere near as charismatic.

  3. Oh yeah, how long has Roman been walking out with only one belt because I noticed that on his entrance last night

Anuways, if HHH has a weakness on big shows, it might involve trying to have a 3 hour show without having enough matches, leading to something having to go long or a lot of dead time.

But maybe they just retooled the concept of an intermission to make it less intrusive. The NXT show I went to in 2017 had a literal intermission for the record.

  4. I actually watched AEW Collision for once:

Hey, if they're gonna put a wrestling show on TV at this time of night, might as well watch it

Valiant job by the commentators to act like this is live.

FTR wins and advances in a match I don't really remember much about. They wrestle the Bucks for the titles in a few weeks.

Pac beats a dude and he's issuing a challenge. Nice Rings of Saturn (?) finish

That Jericho/Hook double team submission looked weird. Then Anthony Agogo returned (he still works here?) and they do a beat down and nobody in the crowd appears to give a shit about it. Then they bury Chris Jericho under the Shane Taylor Promotions flag like it's Mid-South in 1986. Okay. I guess if you're gonna have Jericho do stuff, this is better than wasting hot acts on wrestling Jericho.

Dustin Rhodes has a challenge for Samoa Joe. Not to be down on Dustin, who can still do things, but this feels a little bit hokey since it's pretty obviously timed to ride the coattails of Cody's match this weekend. Just remembered the whole "Dustin having to hide a Dax reply tweet about Collision when Dustin was tweeting about Wrestlemania this weekend" thing.

Now don't get me wrong, Dustin vs Joe is probably gonna be a solid match. But yeah, we're running this with several days of build.

The Six Man seemed fun. Amused that Sydal was talked up as an inspiration to others on a team with Christopher Daniels around, who was clearly more of an inspiration for indy dudes 20 years ago. Anyways, House of Black wins, our hero Adam Copeland lures Malakai away and attacks his friends, then FTR and Mark Briscoe run out for a schmozz, then the Bucks show up. This really should have ended the show if not for this being in the Saturday Night's Main Event timeslot. The (most of the) rest of this show is sorta feeling like action that you should make an Irish Exit during.

This Collision is probably way more padded than the normal Collison, right? as a result of it being taped after Dynamite this week and the timeslot (not to beat a horse about the timeslot). They weren't gonna make fans experience a full 2 hour Collision taping, so tape enough wrestling and then fill the rest with promos.

Also Danielson and Ospreay got sitdown interviews earlier.

Jericho and Hook get a promo. Shibata does a promo via a translation app. Okay. Jericho Island has been downgraded to an atoll.

Hey it's.. the Infantry. I have no idea who the Infantry is. Yuka has more infantry looking pants than Adora. Hey, it's Serena Deeb.

Claudio is in action! against The Butcher. Hard to believe it took this long for the Butcher to make his Collision singles debut. I'm listening to more commentary than normal for this show, and boy are they telling us all sorts of biographical information about The Butcher. Claudio wins.

    A Julia Hart promo.

I just realized this episode of wrestling TV is sorta like 1998 WCW Saturday Night. Or at least as close as you can get to that in 2024. There weren't any backstage promos with Mean Gene tonight and this wasn't taped from Columbus, GA.

Someone told Samoa Joe about what Dustin Rhodes had to say. Okay, Joe vs Dustin Rhodes won't be for the title. That's better than what it seemed like earlier.

Penta! will he face The Blade? or one of the Texas Hangmen? Or Tough Tom from Disorderly Conduct. Even better, Komander! this should probably be a cool match. Plus, I don't remember when this show started (it was delayed by the Final Four) so I won't know when this match is supposed to end. Komander in his 32nd AEW match, it's possible to keep too many stats in wrestling. Cool kick counter to the handspring off the ropes. I might have typed this on the internet before, but the whole "picture in picture through the break" thing for taped shows is... a decision. In theory, they probably could air almost all of this match without PIP and have less time to use filler on the rest of the show... but as noted above, we're kinda pretending this isn't taped, so. Nice dive by Komander. The crowd is faring pretty well by this time of the taping since they sound like they're liking this match. Pretty fun match.

Penta vs Copeland on Wednesday seems like it could be interesting, or a styles clash.

  5. I had a few competing sources of noise during Night 1, much like during my viewing of Dynamite, so I don't really notice the commentary much

McAfee was loud enough to break though a little bit though

  6. the only NBA game i've seen in person was Spurs/Lakers in the Alamodome, so San Antonio settled for putting their basketball in a dome for a few years after missing out on 1990s NFL expansion

but yeah, the only reason why they ran the Rumble in San Antonio is obvious (HBK) and I suspect the only reason why they might run the Alamodome again is also HBK

  7. gonna try estimating the matchtimes for Night 2

    • Rollins/McIntyre: 25 minutes
    • Six Man Philly Street Fight: 10 minutes
    • Knight/Styles: 15 minutes
    • Paul/Orton/Owens: 20 minutes
    • Iyo/Bayley: 15 minutes
    • Roman/Cody: 35 minutes

Compared to tonight which was Rhea/Becky 17, Six Pack Ladder 17, Rey/Dom tag 11, Usos 11, Jade Cargill showcase 8, Gunther/Sami 15, and Main Event 44. Which adds up to around 123 minutes (my estimates add up to just 120 minutes)

Then again I watch way more AEW than WWE, so I might be overestimating how long matches need to go.

Will Minneapolis this time of the year be just as cold?

despite what you might think from the name, US Bank Stadium is a dome, they've hosted a Final Four

the main flaw in that venue is that birds fly into it and die, if it was open air in Minneapolis, there is no chance in hell it would sniff a Wrestlemania

    • Thanks 1
  9. NCAA Final Four big venues that haven't hosted a Wrestlemania: Alamodome, Kingdome (no longer exists), Lucas Oil Stadium, Metrodome (no longer exists), NRG Stadium, Tropicana Field (just for non-baseball season events), US Bank Stadium (not yet)

NCAA Final Four big venues that have hosted a Wrestlemania: Astrodome, AT&T Stadium, Superdome, Ford Field, Georgia Dome, Hoosier Dome, Lucas Oil Stadium, Reliant Stadium, University of Phoenix Stadium

NCAA scheduled the Final Four for Mercades-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for 2020 which might get a Wrestlemania one of these days.

  10. I think NFL crowds usually sound louder in outdoors games that aren't cold, so I could buy the concept that cold weather messes with things a little between cold fans and maybe how noise travels

also, WWE ringside fans are what they are no matter the weather, so I guess if the fans who aren't at ringside are farther away from the ring than usual

  11. Having an in-match explanation for "why doesn't the ref do anything" works better than all the other matches on TV where the ref also doesn't do anything for no reason

considering the stip, you'd think "THERE MUST BE A WINNER" would be a natural stip for that one but they're probably like "dude, nobody thinks we're not having a winner in this match, so why mention the stip, work smarter not harder"

  12. Rock pinning Cody might be the best of the 4 scenarios for putting the heels over tonight, compared to Roman over Cody or Rollins taking the fall, you weren't gonna see Cody go over both nights, so if you had to pick one of the two, you'd obviously pick night 2 over night 1, unless you're booking to make me laugh by jobbing Cody both nights

Rock stomping all over Roman's spotlight might be the most consistent part of this booking, and in theory, if they wanted to do face Roman/heel Rock this summer, that would be an idea, provided fans don't just turn Rock back because they want to cheer Rock over Roman

    Yes.

I guess the Rock was gonna prove to people that he wasn't gonna immediately die out there

I just remembered a joke I didn't make in my Recap post about the Rock winning his People's Championship belt in a tournament held in Rio.

  14. for all the disappointment I read about Uso vs Uso, I wasn't aware of there being a reason why we should have expected a lot there.. I mean, they were both in the Rumble for a long time and sorta slept through most of it.. there's probably been really good Uso tag matches that I'm not aware of.. but I mean...

I think Uso vs Uso going in the middle of night 1 probably should have been a hint to curb expectations?

then again, we had more matches on night 1 than night 2 anyways, so imagine how much longer the main event goes if it was 6 matches instead of 7

  15. was that the longest Rock match ever (that wasn't an iron man match or battle royal)?

In theory, it would make a lot of sense for Seth Rollins' side quest to lead to McIntyre winning tomorrow, but hey, we're acting like Drew hasn't signed yet, so..

  16. Things I Remember From The First Night of Wrestlemania 40:

Becky Lynch and Rhea Ripley had a fun match, lots of ways to get to a pumphandle slam

Spotzz in the Tag Team title ladder match. Lots of spots. There's two different champs now too. Splitting between Awesome Truth and the Roofie Patrol.

Jason Kelce is here to help out Rey and Andrade. That match was fun-ish. Not really as good as Rey/Dom last year. Congrats to Carlito on wearing a shirt in that weather. Smart man.

Good Uso beats Evil Uso. Always amusing to see "MAIN EVENT JEY USO" for matches where he's working halfway through the card. Gotta aspire to have a spot that's better than your spot.

Jade looking like a star again in that six man tag.

Somebody finally beats Gunther. Guessing that Gunther's off to WWE title country as soon as he can leave the country. Also guessing Sami and Gable are on a collision course. Sami with the upset "winning with a relative in the front row" victory. It really is a new era in the WWE, Hunter.

Congrats to the Rock on not (obviously) hurting himself tonight and on taking more bumps than you'd expect. Heels win night one because duh. Tomorrow night it's Clusterfuck Rules for the title.

  17. Mike Rotunda looks as if he has aged reasonably well even with the recent awful news he had to go through. It's nice to see Barry Windham up and about after his recent health problems.

I only tuned on the Peacock during the US Express induction so I don't have anything to say about what happened before it.

Also, gotta love Mike Rotunda noting the punt pass and kick story (JR would fistpump happily on getting to hear about that again) and how the crowd reaction changed slightly from him mentioning the Steelers and then the Eagles.
