  1. Looks like Moore is now all but officially the next head coach at Michigan. Adam Schefeter reporting school sources have told him they've decided to hire Moore.

I imagine they apply for a waiver so they don't have to wait a few more days to make it official.

Ultimately, the NCAA is in a precious state of affairs, and I don’t think it’s in their immediate interests to bring the hammer down too hard on a big, influential program like Michigan, so I would honestly be surprised if too much comes of the Stalions investigation.

But it is rather ironic that Harbaugh appears to be leaving college football under very similar circumstances as his old pal, Pete Caroll, in 2009: getting out of town just before the posse comes.

If I had to guess, I suspect they will get probation for about two years, a small scholarship reduction with it (maybe five per year), and the school will pay a hefty fine.

I think a post-season ban is extremely unlikely if only because did you see the ratings Michigan pulled in this year? Also, they seem to be moving away from using bans in favor of monetary penalties.

History says vacating wins is somewhat unlikely but not impossible. AFAIK, the only time the NCAA has ever vacated wins for anything other than playing ineligible athletes was Penn State, and they ended up restoring those.

Also, I think the NCAA would rather not wind up in another lawsuit right now, so they'll tread somewhat lightly in this. Get too aggressive and Michigan still probably sue

Anyway, even if the NCAA does vacate wins, it's highly unlikely the CFP, AP, AFCA, and NFF all vacate the national titles they awarded and ask for the trophies back.

so was the Bucks thing handled by someone who knows the general concept of "the Milwaukee Brewers fired Ned Yost in September to save their season" and decided to apply it to the Milwaukee Bucks in January?

I guess it has worked in fairly recent NBA history with the Cavs firing whatisname and giving Lue the job.

And not the same situation, but way back in 1979-80 with the Lakers having McKinney in the bike accident and then Westphal taking over. And college but my Michigan fan status means I have to bring up the 1988-89 Wolverines when Bill Frieder took a different job right before the tourney but planned to coach through the end of the season. Bo fired him, promoted Fischer and they won their only basketball Natty.

But it's still a weird situation.

Moore is the obvious pic in a lot of ways. The only potential hiccup there is the Connor Stalions investigation. If there’s real smoke there (and Harbaugh’s insistence on an immunity clause suggests he certainly thought sanctions were possible), Moore is almost certain to be involved in it. Honestly, you could convince me that Harbaugh was insulated from it in the way that politicians get insulated from the dirt their underlings do, but there’s no way Moore and Minter weren’t involved, because they’d have to be the guys changing the plays.

Michigan might want to make a clean break from the Harbaugh era to mitigate any potential sanctions, if they think that threat is real.*

    *I’m not so sure!

I really don't know if Moore or Minter had any idea how Stalions was stealing signals, which is the real point. Brent Venables at Clemson was notoriously great at signal stealing. Michigan firmly believes Ryan Day had Don Brown's signals, etc.

I think it's entirely plausible that Michigan knew Stalions was really good at stealing signs, but assumed he was doing it the same way other teams did, a combination of watching the TV broadcasts, watching the All-22, and the network of staffers at other schools who are friends and share information after games.

I'm not at all convinced they didn't know, either, just to be clear. But I do think the "everybody successfully steals signs, why would we have thought he was doing it differently?" line is a plausible one.

But anyway, unless Michigan thinks the NCAA has specific info on Moore, I'll be shocked if he doesn't get the job.

doesn't the whole transfer portal thing incentivize hiring another team's HC to open up their portal too?

You open up one team to try and recruit from, sure. But you also open up your entire roster to be recruited by 132 other schools, and you are fighting this without the coaches who have relationships with the players. Alabama has basically been ravaged by this and don't have any real chance to restock until the spring window.

The thirty day rule makes sense, but it's brutal for the program that gets left behind.

    Michigan needs a new HC

I'll be shocked if it's not Sherrone Moore. Especially seeing how devastated teams losing coaches late have been by transfers. Moore gives them, by far, the best chance to keep everyone in house. I'll also be shocked if it takes more than about 36 hours, tops.

  6. You know how the NBA releases those final two minutes reports on reffing for each game.

According to the report, the refs blew ten calls in the final two minutes of last night's Hornets-Timberwolves game. One foul assigned to the wrong Hornet, three missed fouls by the Wolves, two missed travels by Charlotte, and four missed fouls (including two on one failed late drive by KAT) by Charlotte.

  7. Here's an interesting little fact: The Texans played 19 convinced regular and post season games this year. They scored offensive touchdowns in 17 of them. The only two were the season opening loss to Baltimore and the playoff loss to Baltimore.

    Something, something, Scott Norwood’s ghost.

I think we can start making a case for Pat Mahomes as the GOAT at QB. His only playoff losses have been to Tom Brady.

Those two losses to Brady are going to be what hurts his GOAT case. He wins both of them and Brady only has five rings and he has at least three, maybe four. And, fair or not, he's going to have to get at least awfully close to Brady in rings to get the public sentiment. As great as they've been and he's been, it's hard to imagine another four+ super bowl wins because, well, only the pats have ever done that.

If the Lions actually won the SB, I could see crybabies spinning them as the “worst” SB winner of all time. If it were any other team they would already be working on it. If it does happen though Lions should come back with how they started beating the SB champions and ended beating the would SB champions had the Lions not beat them.

They won 12 games this season. I don't see where you would even start a worst team argument considering we've seen a 9 win team take home the Lombardi

Sorry the “math” and Collinsworth are dumb in that situation, kick the PAT then go for 2 if you score again.

If your goal is to extend the game and get to overtime, kick the PAT.

If your goal is to win the damn game in regulation, you go for 2.

I mean, this isn't obscure math. And they still keep a path to getting to OT despite not getting it.

Seth Walder explained it here really well. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/28100383/going-2-8-points-why-nfl-teams-keep-doing-why-analytics-backs-up

Bucs made the right decision, just didn't execute it.

I couldn’t believe what I just heard. It wasn’t because of the reference, but because it came from a mouth that’s never said anything useful or sounded like it wasn’t full of turds.

He referenced Big Time Wrestling during the Lions/Chiefs game that opened the season as well.

  12. IIRC, on the intro to the director's cut of Alien on the Blu-ray, Scott specifically says the theatrical cut is the definitive one and he just made that cut because Fox wanted to have alternate cuts for all four for the quadrilogy box
