Speaking of the kickoff show - I forgot that Renee called Booker T the first US Champ

That one was so egregious that they actually had to offer a correction coming back from the video package to say that Harley Race was the first one

To be fair, Booker was the first US Champ WWE had from when they bought WCW.  (he had both belts)

  2. That's modern "selling" for you- it's part of what pro wrestling is now.  I wish it was different but I don't think it's ever coming back.

The Ganso bomb I can buy Tana not being too hurt by it because it looked like an ineffective version of the Last Ride- same as Tana's high fly flow being less effective now when his knee acts up.   I was actually mad when the Last Ride didn't finish Tana off, esp since I knew that was it.  It's rare for me to get invested mad like that during a match.

I'm now hoping he makes the CEO event.

  3. Unsure if this is leading to anything- but the fighting game tournament CEO (which is the 2nd biggest in the US after EVO) is going to have an official NJPW presence this year.  Previous 2 years Kenny Omega competed (and he's not terrible at fighting games).

Fenix and Pentagon both held titles in AAW which runs the same area.  They'd definitely be over in front of that crowd and as they're hot properties in the indy scene in general it would make sense to try and get them on the show.

Would New Japan be ok with AAA guys against their guys?   Bros vs Bucks seems like a great semi-main for the show.

Yeah, I like that match well enough, but this was another one of those situations where Okada's chameleon game of working the other guy's match backfired because the other guy's match is kinda shitty.  Give him another year or two, and I figure he'll have developed whatever sense is required to be more discerning in who he gives matches to and who he takes them from.  This match needed Okada to be the boss.

It also needed to highlight the heavy/junior dynamic more.  I mean, Ospreay lifts Okada with a waist lock takedown like its nothing within the first 15 seconds of the match.  Sure, Okada's athleticism at 6'3" 230 is part of what makes him special, but you'd never guess he had 50 pounds over Ospreay based on this match.  The way they worked it actually made Okada feel smaller instead of making Ospreay feel bigger.

Jr. limit in NJ is 220 and Ospreay is pretty close to that.   I didn't have an issue with Ospreay using strength some, esp since Okada showed better strength with the early knucklelocks.   I think they're grooming Ospreay to eventually go heavy.

I really enjoyed heavy Taichi, and Suzuki-gun does need a legit heavyweight other than Minoru.   I kinda expect an eternal Taichi/Yano feud for some reason.

Ibushi winning would be a perfect way to prove Omega’s a changed man... or not. He could potentially fear Ibushi’s passed him again, already; and for the first time since that infamous time, he could be ringside as Ibushi fights for the IWGP title—and he’d do it against the man Omega couldn’t beat for the title himself. I mean, that’s soap-opera level drama, which I’d love. (Not that Ibushi’s just a plot device for Kenny’s character development, and the match would be incredible.)

LIJ/Suzuki-Gun means Naito and co are going from tweener heels to tweener faces, right? God knows the crowd’s ready.

I’d also do picks. Horribly, but I’d do them.

They of course won't put the belt on Ibushi, but Ibushi winning the belt, than Omega winning the G1 would be awesome.

In terms of main event heels- you've always got Minoru as well.

  7. Would Bullet Club work in the US without Kenny, and would Kenny and Ibushi have anyone in their faction (I can see Yujiro joining them- if only so they can have someone to eat pins)?

Could even see a three-way split with the Tongans (who would probably be the "real" Bullet cub) , Cody's group, and Kenny's group.

Okada's pants were fucking awesome. That is some Jin Kazama from Tekken type shit. Made me wish that Gedo had cosplayed as Heihachi. I mean, just look at those two! Gedo better be careful. Okada may throw him into a volcano at some point.

but Okada is the second King from Tekken.

Did find out a while ago that  Minoru was the mocap guy for the first King.

  9. The end bit with Jericho attacking Naito makes me understand the booking of WK a bit more.

You've got Jericho, Jericho-Okada isn't going to have any drama, because we know Okada wins that.  Jericho-Naito at least has a bit of drama, and you can't really plan Jericho-Tanahashi because of Tanahashi's medical issues.    If they want Okada to break the defenses record, Sanada can take a loss here easily- it won't hurt him at all, then find two more goobers before having Omega beat Okada in the summer.  (I don't think there's anything special about anyone in LIJ outside of Naito and Hiromu)

i just came in here to post about this and here's the problem with your take

one of the big turning points in the match is Jericho refusing to let go of the crab because a rope break only matters with a threat of DQ, so Omega starts digging for props and comes up with Dramatic Post-Match Spray and gets Jericho in the eyes with it

and then ten minutes later there's rope breaks

(to be clear: still my favorite match of the night, but, that is a Grade A Plot Hole)

I bought the rope break as Jericho being so gassed he forgot that he couldn't be DQed.
