  1. Does anyone watch AEW who isn't fairly familiar with indy wrestling?

I dug KIngston's appearance last night, but I was wondering what a causal fan who doesn't watch much indie wrestling would make of him.  His only nationwide tv appearances have been TNA, right?  So unless you're streaming (or buying dvds of shows) Chikara, CZW, etc., you may not know much about him.  If you weren't really familiar with King, you probably saw a pasty fat guy in jobberish ring attire and wondered what the h*ll was going on.

Then again, a casual fan probably would be bewildered by a large chunk of AEW;s roster.  Lucha Bros, Orange Cassidy, Best Friends, Player Uno, the Japanese women, etc.  I hate to think what you make of Evil Uno if you didn't see him and Stu Grayson in the indies ten years ago and build up some goodwill for them.

I guess my question is: Is AEW attracting causal fans who didn't watch indie wrestling before it got a time slot on TNT?

(I would guess the answer is: even fewer than WWE, which I doubt attracts a lot of casual fans anymore either.)

  2. I didn't remember Rick Martel's WWF heel run lasting all that long until I started re-watching late 80's/early 90's PPVs.  Was surprised to see him still getting a decent push in '93, so I looked it up and he did "The Model" heel character until 1995.  He was still getting a decent push in '93, though it looks like he was rarely on tv in 1994-95.

He turned on Tito and broke up Strikeforce in '89, so he was The Model for about six years.

I've gotten so used to seeing him as a heel it's hard to go back to AWA and watch super babyface Rick Martel.

Interesting, he and Don Callis both claim there were plans to bring them back in the late 90's as a heel tag team, and that Callis was going to eventually tun on Martel so he could become a babyface.

So does Apollo have the 'rona?

    According to Meltzer, yes.

He allegedly tested positive a couple weeks back.  He's supposedly through it.  WWE expected him to be available for the match and only found out a couple hours beforehand that he wasn't.  Testlng delay or something along those lines.  It sounds like he might be back by the next taping.

  4. Finished up season 5 of Line of Duty.  Watched all five seasons in the space of 4-5 weeks.  Really enjoyed it, though I kinda feel like it's overpraised.  I've seen it described as best/second best UK drama in years. Wouldn't go that far.

For me, personally, I liked the show more when it stuck to the procedural format.  Interrogation scenes were the highlights for me.  I kinda wanted the show to be Law and Order, the creator can't decide if he wants the series to be L&O or 24.  When you think you know where the show's going, there's some big twist.  Twists were usually kind of over the top and took the show in a direction less interesting to me.  It wasn't the shock twists of throat slashings, chases through the streets, cast members being pushed out windows, etc. that kept me watching.

That said, the end scene of the fourth season opener was something.  One of my favorite "gotcha" scenes.

    Spoiler

Thandie Newton guest-starred as a cop who fabricated evidence to make an arrest and got the wrong man convicted.  At the end of the ep, she has it out with one of her forensic investigators at the guy's home.  She's going to ruin the guy, so he pushes her and she falls and hits her head.  Thinking she's dead, the csi decides to use his forensic training to hide her body.  So he gets into a protective suit, wraps her in a sheet, and prepares to cut her up.  As he leans over her,  about to cut her with a bonesaw, she opens her eyes.  Scene faded to black on that note and didn't make it clear what happened after that until later in the season.

  5. Played a little WWE 2K19 last night.  Probably my favorite WWE game. Roster is huge, gameplay is decent, and most of the glitches are amusing rather than maddening.

Did see a Royal Rumble end with the a Curtis Axel 2015 finish.  Last three wrestlers were Kofi, Roman, and AJ Styles.  Roman threw Kofi out, then immediately climbed out of the ring - through the middle rope, irrc - and did the "Oh man, I can't believe I was eliminated" sulk.  Then he attacked Kofi and walked to the back.

The game went on for awhile with only AJ in the ring (or onscreen), then the match just randomly ended and AJ was declared the winner.

    Even Roman fears AJ.

  6. I wish we could have had all this customization for Fire Pro Returns.  I probably put a thousand hours (or maybe several thousand) into FPR.  Really enjoyed making edits.

I bought World when it was released, but really didn't get into it.  I doubt I put I've put ten hours into World.  Probably half that.

I guess for the clarity it should be pointed out that - at least based on a different Let's Play I watched - you have to do basically like a "loyalty" mission for them before you can play as them.

So its not like you can just walk up to someone you have never met and immediately start playing as them

That's the way it was explained to me.  You try to recruit NPC's and once you successfully recruit them to your side, they become playable.

IWGP United States Championship Match: The Motion Picture presented by New Japan Pro Wrestling

    A screenplay by BEN!

Open wide with an establishing shot of a desert.  An Ennio Morricone-style soundtrack plays throughout.

A black SUV drives into the scene.  Two black-suited dark shades-wearing men of Asian descent exit.  "Get out gaijin dog!" one orders as he opens the back door.  In the back sits the IWGP US Champion Jon Moxley blindfolded.  The other suited man removes the blindfold and barks, "Time to fight!"  "Bout time," Moxley coldly mutters as he headbutts the suited man.  A NJPW ref arrives from seemingly out of nowhere and intervenes screaming "No no!  Opponent over there!"  Moxley's opponent [____] enters the scene.  The two fight for about 15 minutes in the desert wasteland before Moxley hits the Death Rider, cause this is absolutely not taking place in the US where it would be called the Paradigm Shift, and gets the pin and retains the IWGP US Championship.  He then attacks the other suited man and leaves him laying.  Moxley enters the SUV and drives off.  Same wide shot as open but now with the SUV driving off into the desert night kicking up dust.  Roll credits.

I honestly expected Bunkhouse Buck to figure into this somehow.

    Now I'm a little disappointed....

My PS3 library has about 10 physical games, bout 100ish digital.  My PS4 and current PC catalog is 100% digital.  My issue is gonna be when the servers finally shut down.

Yeah, that's always been my argument for physical.

I've 250+ PS4 physical games, plus 3 or 4 digital.  My collection skews heavily towards imports and physical indie games from iam8bit, Limited Run, Signature Editions, etc.  Since the pandemic, though, I've been enjoying collecting indie limited run releases and imports less and less.  Same thing with my Switch collection.

I think, for the time being, I'm going to play a lot of digital exclusives and then figure out if I'm ready to move on from physicals or if this is just a phase.  Looked over the XBLA store a bit ago and there are at least 50 games I'd like to play.  Probably more.  There are a lot of games I don't know anything about.  I don't even typically pay a lot of attention to digital exclusives, so a lot of good digital games go under my radar.

Did get a cool piece of hardware today.  Bought a Star Wars Xbox 360 console later last week and it was delivered today.  They really aren't that rare on eBay, but most of them eBay listings don't have all the parts, or don't come with the box.  Been wanting one that was CIB and included the box, packing, and manuals.  Timing was just never right until now.  Think it's my favorite X360 limited console.  The only one that comes close is the maroon/black Gears of War Limited Edition.

It's probably not going to be near as good as Watchmen HBO was.

Probably not, but I'm still excited.  12 issues seem to be the sweet spot for Tom King.  Vision, Mr, Miracle, Omega Men, the current Adam Strange limited.  Not a huge fan of his longer runs, but I generally like King a good deal.  And I don't have any issue with DC using Watchmen characters in the DC Universe proper.

  11. Do most people download these days?  Saw a comment from Capcom recently that 80% of their sales are digital downloads.  Is that more or less the industry now?  I'm assuming it's at least 50/50 for downloads, probably more.

I think I'm finally ready to become a digital gamer.  I download occasionally,  but I'm mostly a physical gamer.  I barely know my way around the digital marketplace, even though I have accounts with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo (no Steam).  But I don't enjoy physical gaming as much.  Rare game prices are shooting through the roof since the pandemic started, importing is harder and a lot costlier, I hare to give LRG too much money up front because when the game come in, their warehouse could be shut down and not processing orders, post office is damaging more discs in transit, etc.

I recently downloaded some XBLA games that I'd never played due to there not being a physical edition (Fez, Mark of the Ninja, Braid, etc) and I kinda dug the ease of it.  I wouldn't mind going that route for a lot of triple AAA games going forward.  It seems kinda odd to keep putting together a big physical collection when the future is so uncertain - assuming we have futures.

Only thing that really keeps me is the storage issue.  I'm used to having a couple hundred PS4 games that I can re-install if i feel like.  How do i get around that issue with downloads?  External storage?  Games like Spider-Man take up an awful lot of space so keeping an entire library on a hard drive isn't practical.

What I'm really wondering is: do I own the games as long as I have an account on XBL or PSN and the games are avaiilable, or is it just till my PS4 goes bad.  I mean, if I download a game to the PS4 hard drive or an external hard drive, and the drive gets damaged or corrupted (or lost), would I have to rebuy the games from PSN or can I re-download them as long as I"m still using the same account/profile?

Thanks.  Like I said, huge game library, but digital noob.  I've wanted to play Braid and Fez since they first came out, but I kept putting it off hoping there would be a physical edition sooner or later.  I download occasionally, but not very often and I'm still kinda figuring it out.

  12. Most of the reviews I've seen have been good to great (8/10 or above; metacritic score is in the mid -80's after 50 or so reviews), but a lot of the reviews seem to love the graphics and visual tricks more than story or combat.  A lot of reviewers have compared it to the early Assassin's Creed games.  I mean, AC in feudal Japan without the VR fluff?  I'm there.

My general impression from review is that mileage may vary according to how much you like AC mixed with a bit of Witcher or BotW.  The reviews I've seen that seemed let down had fun with the game, but expected something more.  It sounds to me like it's probably a solid, entertaining game, but not something that's going to push the genre forward like Zelda oror be a "Killer App" like FF7 Remake or Last of Us.

    I gotta have it.

When I saw that this morning, I thought it was a working NES with a Lego shell.  i mean, I didn't think you could insert a game in the slot and play it, but I did think it some sort of dedicated console like the NES Classic.

Needless to say, it was early.  When i looked at it a second time and realized what it really was, I was kinda disappointed.

That story about him refusing to come to a Nitro taping because he was laying down a new driveway is a thing, right? I'm not just making up Scott Norton stories or my Scott Norton dreams aren't leaking into my consciousness are they?

I remember that story too so you're not imagining it.

I completely forgot Josh Barnett was on puroresufans around that time.

That was a fun site.  When I first became a member, Stu was really connected to NJPW and would post updates about backstage goings-on and contract negotiations in addition to the usual results and recaps.

  15. On the subject of bannings, whatever happened to the dude who did the thorough recaps of WWE shows, complete with lots of screencaps and - inevitably - multiple butt shots of the women on the roster.  Posted as "MJ-something-Fan" or something like that.  The diva stuff was creepy, but he was one the few recappers I could tolerate.

DVDVR memories that haven't been brought up yet.

-- Mass meltdowns when WWE released midcarders and the board realized they were actually Kawada, Misawa, and Bruno Sammartino rolled into one.  The one that stands out is Scotty 2 Hotty.  I'm kinda surprised the anniversary of his release isn't a DVDVR holiday.

-- the framistan period.  There was a time when I would catch myself at work spelling "product" as "prod-uct" because that was how I had to type it in on the board to get around the framistan.  Also, I accidentally typed "humped your mom" in a couple posts instead of the actual word.

-- Chris Masters.  I still haven't seen any actual proof that Masters became a superworker later in his WWE run.

    - Themed photo months.  I miss the "CAPE BATTLE ROYALS"  Robe month was fun too

-- Rippa melting down over March Madness and swearing he'd never do another one - only to set up another tourney 12 months later.

    - Dean, in general.  I still break out "looks like your contractor has a court date" every so often.

-- Alternate board skins.  It got to the point I was afraid to try different skins for the board because one of the choices would usually be seizure-inducing.

Not DVDVR, but my favorite "someone in the biz posts here" was Cuzican on the Puroresufan boards about 15 years ago.  She was apparently Scott Norton's wife.  She seemed mostly laid back, until someone criticized Scott or someone in the locker room.  Then she went into Mama Wolverine mode.

  16. AC Valhalla interested me less than I thought it would, though I'll undoubtedly shell out a lot for a collectible edition and really enjoy the game when all is said and done.

Really, I want AC to reboot to what the first few games were - highly skilled dudes in robes who belong to a secret society and snipe people from the shadows using anachronistic weapons - but without all the sci-fi virtual reality nonsense tacked on.  The first five or so games in the franchise were my jam when they weren't forcing us to play as bartenders.

BTW, I know it was probably for alliteration purposes, but it's weird Ed Leslie kept the stripper name after he became "The Barber". Nothing says kid friendly than a grown man walking around with half his ass cheeks intentionally exposed.

My wife recently saw Beefcake doing his Brutus the Barber gimmick and wanted to know why a "barber" was carrying around a pair of hedge clippers (Answer: Because the tiny pair of scissors isn't going to look impressive on TV).

This thread reminds me of one of my odder wrestling theories.  I started watching wrestling in the mid-late 80's.  I was pretty young at the time, and all I knew of wrestling was the WWF shows and the weekend Turner JCP/WCW stuff.  Since there was no internet yet, I didn't have access to other fans or Metlzer's newsletter.  I didn't even buy the magazines, so I wasn't my analysis of this stuff was rather basic.

Anyway, I developed a wacky theory that any time a wrestler got nicer ring gear or changed up his gimmick, he was going to lose.  I came by this theory because of the British Bulldogs.  I was a huge Bulldogs fan.  At the time, they were had the titles, they were wearing plain red and blue tights (that looked sorta like sweat pants to me).  When they lost the belts, they got better ring gear and changed up their tights to the swank white gear with blue trim and the Union Jack on the back.

When they changed ring gear, they started jobbing.  They'd get wins over the Dream Team in 6-mans and non-title matches, but would either job in title matches or win by DQ.  And I was sure it was the tights.

Of course, they'd worn the white/blue/flag gear in Stampede, but I had never heard of Stampede Wrestling at that part.  I was sure it was the tights.

Other wrestlers who proved this theory:

-- Tito Santana (IC champion when he wore plain trunks, jtts when he dressed as a matador

-- Ricky Steamboat (feuded with Savage when he wore plain tights, jobbed a lot when he dressed as a dragon).

-- Jake Roberts (got nicer tights late in his run and jobbed on way out)

--Powers of Pain (won a lot as Road Warriors cosplayers, won not so much when the team split up and they got new ring gear).

    Yeah..... it was the tights....

I'm pretty sure if JYD had stayed around a little longer, he would have been repackaged as a baker or pastry chef so they can make sense of "Grab Them Cakes".

Given how Vince repackaged Tito Santana and Ricky Steamboat, I kinda think JYD would have gotten saddled with some sort of feral dog boy gimmick if he has stayed around.
