The Tana/Omega VTR really played up the way tables and ladders have been involved in Kenny’s matches, so I would expect that to come into play in the main event.  Between that and Naito/Jericho being No DQ now, the last hour of the show could get pretty garbage-y.

Okada/White with the heated feud could also be a big brawl. I imagine if there isn’t plunder, there will be lots of interference and cheating. The 3 headlining matches could all be filled with that kind of fare.

The more I think about it, the more I foresee an Omega victory in the same vein of Tanahashi defeating Okada in 2015 in the shocking result that still makes sense and can work. The tears would flow in the dome.

Or in the same vein of Okada beating Naito at WK 12. Omega with how crazy hot he was, seemed to be the favorite against Okada at WK 11 too. Now that I think about it, other than the passing of the torch Okada/Tana match at WK 10, most of the recent Dome main events have not went the way people expected.

  3. You guys should catch the Kaito vs. Sugiura match from the NOAH show. It’s really fantastic. One of the best Sugi title matches in this reign and definitely the best match of Kaito’s career. And it wasn’t even the match of the night...

The Junior Heavyweight Title match between Kotaro Suzuki and Daisuke Harada is must watch shit. One of the best Junior matches that I’ve seen in all of wrestling this year. That match is nuts.

  4. So the Golden Lovers finished the show in the snow. If history’s any indicator, that likely means they’ll lose. Seriously. Go look back at like the last 4 Road to Tokyo Dome shows. The one who is the lasting image at the end of the year. The one celebrating in the snow always loses in the Dome match.

  5. Tokyo Sports 2018 Awards are out.

    MVP: Hiroshi Tanahashi (NJPW)

MOTY: Omega vs Okada Dominion 6.9 (NJPW)

Tag team: Violent Giants (Suwama & Shuji Ishikawa) (AJPW)

    Outstanding Performance: Naomichi Marufuji (NOAH)

    Fighting spirit: Kaito Kiyomiya (NOAH)

    Technical: Tetsuya Naito (NJPW)

    Joshi: Tsukasa Fujimoto (Ice Ribbon)

    Rookie: Utami Hayashita (Stardom)

That's fantastic news. Here's hoping big boy Kitamura is up next.

The main issue with Ibushi/Ospreay opening is that on paper, it’s the 2nd strongest match on the card. If a MOTY opens the show, it’s going to really hamstring all the matches following it. Junior Tag will be cold. ZSJ/Ishii will be great but I wouldn’t expect a hot crowd for that one. Tag Titles will probably get a few pops but I doubt anybody will be invested. Cody/Juice will be the show’s bathroom break. I could see the crowd not getting back into the show much until KUSHIDA/Ishimori.

We have a card, and it’s what you’d expect. Maybe the only noteworthy thing is it appears the NEVER cluster is pre-show, so maybe no rumble? (And it only decides #1 contender, so it doesn’t seem BC will drop those belts soon.) And then Ospreay/Ibushi is the *opener*. It’s certainly not the least-big match on the card, so in a subtle way this slight step away from precisely top-down card construction feels as “western” as anything New Japan has done recently.

But I’m going to get excited about this first:

They’re really doing WWE match order now. Putting one of the top matches on the card early to “pop the crowd”.

And the crowd was brutal. After this show you wouldn't think that Tanahashi/Omega was going to be the main event. If I remember right last year WTL finals also had dead crowd (with close to zero reaction when Jericho was beating the crap out of Kenny) until Naito/Okada did their thing and finals itself being ok like this year as well.

Even at Power Struggle, OSAKA wasn’t that hot for Kenny/Tana confrontations. This match doesn’t have a lot of heat. This match might be the least over Dome main event on years. Okada/Tana, Okada/Omega, and definitely Okada/Naito all felt like way bigger matches and got better crowd reactions.

And LIJ vs. GoD it is!

@Archibaldmentioned this but there really are only two ways this goes. LIJ win and YBs weasel their way into another tag title match. Or... the worst case scenario....

GOD wins and challenges the Bucks leaving LIJ without anything to do at the Dome.

Y'all need to see Brody King vs. PCO from night one of BOLA. Might be one of the best worst matches I've ever seen. Brody hit ~15% of his offense smoothly and PCO almost died doing a moonsault off the top to the apron. The former may be the worst pushed wrestler in 2018. He seems like a really nice guy and people who know him love him but fuck do I think Brody King is not a very good pro wrestler yet. And I can't stand the pretend tough guy presence. At least drop the halfassed, done at half speed poorly agility spots. It's embarrassing.

You’re continuing with BOLA? I thought you were done with PWG for the time being. Your opinion doesn’t seem to be growing fonder, ha ha.

  11. Am I really in a small minority in not liking the WarGames match at all? I thought it was way too long, boring, contrived, nonsensical, lacked brutality and intensity, and had an extremely underwhelming finish. I frankly thought it sucked. I’m kinda surprised by the praise it’s getting. It was probably the worst NXT TakeOver match this year to me. Up until then, I was gonna have it as the #2 best TakeOver ever and that one match dropped it down to like #9 for me.

A friend and I tried to get through night 1 and couldn't. I dunno. Other than Puma King (unsurprisingly awesome and immediately won the crowd over), the first 5 or so matches were not good and actually pissed us off. I asked my friend, and both of us were die hard PWG fans especially during the height of Roddy's reign through the rise of Chuck Taylor, if I have less tolerance for stupid indie bullshit than I did back then. He replied that the roster was just so much better and deeper at that point. He wasn't wrong. They've really been hurt by NXT signings and the Bucks working ROH/NJPW. So many bland fuckers trying to do all of the moves to get over. This has been a problem for over a year now I'd say but at least I cared about the top guys on the card. Now it's just WALTER and outside guys. Additionally, the Globe Theater's lighting is so dark compared to the Legion Hall and atmosphere so tame... It feels like a different promotion. And,  yes, I understand PWG has always had guys doing too much. But there was generally that one point about 2 minutes before the end of the match where they hit PWG Overkill mode and lost me (and often a decent portion of the in-house audience). Now Overkill is closer to 2 minutes after the opening bell rather than 2 minutes before the end bell.  It costs so much to get the DVDs/Blurays shipped up to Canada too, so I don't think I'll be following for too much longer at this rate, at least all that closely. I skipped the last few before BOLA because I was already unhappy.

If you wanna see how good PWG used to be, you may as well just watch NXT TakeOver lol.

I'll be amazed if this won't be Okada's second worst match at the Dome. And thats not a dig at White, I like him, he is decent and he is improving, but he is not on Tanahashi/Omega/Naito level yet.

As for whats next for Suzuki, trios titles sound very likely now. Someone needs to take those belts from GoD and there aren't many good combinations that are still available. Sure, Iizuka is "special attraction", but Suzuki and Taichi are probably better/more over than anyone else who still doesn't have a match. That is with me assuming that Evil/Sanada are winning WTL and Juice getting a rematch for US title at the Dome. Plus Suzuki was clearly pissed at BC after that G1 match with Fale so this would work as a revenge.

I always wondered why they'd put the title back on Goto if the idea is to still do Ibushi/Ospreay at the Dome. Ibushi could have easily taken that title from Taichi, but if Suzuki/Taichi/X are booked to win trios titles then I guess it makes sense.

And well, thinking more about it I wouldn't mind if Suzuki had extended run with trios belts. He still has his aura and his offence looks good for the most part, but he clearly does not want to sell much anymore (and probably shouldn't). So him getting tagged in, doing some signature stuff, tagging out and letting someone like Iizuka eat a pin might be a good strategy to extend his career.

And unfortunately now I totally see GoD vs YBs vs Evil/Sanada vs KES match for tag titles at the Dome.

KES is going straight to the Rumble, I think. They don’t matter that much to NJPW. But yeah YB are getting shoehorned in there for sure.
