What's worse being a watered down version of another company or being a watered down version of your own company?

    Ha, 'be yourself' always!

I think this is actually an important note, in that, ROH because of it's history gets judged much more critically than say Impact which has such a weak lineage or the upstart MLW.  I've enjoyed watching MLW this year, and tho I would say the TV episodes I've seen are much better than ROH's TV (what I've seen has been mediocre at best) or the little Impact I've seen (couldn't make it thru), ROH still seems to put on a pretty solid live show.  I am judging this solely by the MSG show (which was almost entirely highlighted by New Japan matches/performers) and the house show here in Toronto - which was by no means a blowaway show, but very entertaining.  ROH is struggling, but they aren't far off getting back to 'stable' - where they've almost always been for me.  They've always been a company with a good roster and simple mostly decent booking. They really don't need to do a whole lot to get back to simple mostly decent booking.  Listen to the fans and get the straps off Matt Taven and Shane Taylor.  Tho, I don't hate either of those guys as much as most. Taven should just not be the headliner, but I'm not sure who should be (maybe some of you who are following closer would know?).  They don't really have that one guy.  Jeff Cobb would have been an interesting choice, but they already jobbed him, and I suspect he's AEW bound. Taylor on the otherhand just needs a makeover - maybe some looser pants, get him out of that huge-ass-exposing-singlet.

PWInsider reports that ROH has signed Jay and Mark Briscoe to new deals approximately three months ago. The duo was involved in a significant angle at ROH Manhattan Mayhem.

Damn, was really hoping to see them on TNT.

The 'Manhattan Mayhem' review I read suggested this was a strong comeback show for ROH.  I'm not following ROH, but the show I saw here in Toronto suggested there's still a lot of talent up and down the card.  I hope they can see the errors of their booking ways (see the current singles title holders) and rebound.  Also, is this company really worse than TNA?  I tried to watch an episode of Impact recently, with FF button in play, and barely made it thru.  Impact is WWE lite, ROH 2019 is more like past-ROH lite.

Because he's fucking Tye Dillinger. He is exactly what Cody described him as--he's a good hand, and he's capable of doing more than what the WWE was using him for; but at the end of the day, he's on the wrong side of 30, and he's never done anything to suggest that he'll ever be more than a midcarder. And having Darby Allin put his ass over was just inane.

I'm of the opinion that Darby Allin getting over will not be effected by a loss in a six man tag or any losses.  He's a risk taker.  He'll probably lose a lot of matches, and it won't make a difference in his ability to get over.  Darby Allin is one of the extreme bright spots early on for AEW.

Further, I get it, you bought him as Tye Dillinger, a WWE lower card nothing.  As I said, and as the old saying goes: to each their own.  I really don't think having him feud with Cody, a feud which he'll likely lose is offensive in any way - if he's a good hand as you say he'll be more than capable of putting together a good match with a Cody Rhodes.  Especially considering there's a pretty great backstory already in place.  The poster above has it right - even on the downside, he'll be a nice lower or upper mid-card guy.  Or... maybe he'll surprise.  Stay tuned.

As I said, I like the guy and hope it turns out well for him.  And most importantly I think it looks good on AEW as a signal to the many many performers being misused in WWE that you might have an opportunity to prove your worth in AEW.  Especially if a 'no talent' guy 'whom nobody will be tuning into the show for' like 'Tye fucking Dillinger' makes good on a profile feud like this.

Is there any realistic way Spears gets elevated to something that won't fade away in a month or two's time without winning? I feel like if they're serious about him, he needs to win. I mean, he shouldn't but he should if they want him to succeed.

If Spears has a quality match that tells a story and he picks up the win then yeah I think it'll last.  I expect with Cody kinda being on fire right now that it will be a good match.

It's hilarious how far they're willing to go to try to make Tye fucking Dillinger into a thing. Unsafe chair shots; getting better, younger, and more talented and marketable workers to do jobs for him; signing Tully... I guess they saw how everyone was feeling nostalgic for WCW, but instead of the Monday Night Wars, they decided to recreate the era of the company when the guy pulling the strings brought in his less talented buddies and gave them spots they didn't deserve.

Ha, wha? Why doesn't he 'deserve' to have an angle/match with Cody?  A guy he has legit history with.  Because he wrestled for WWE where he actually got over despite them having no interest - which clearly didn't matter as they did nothing to further anything he did for himself.  I mean this is a company that  has continued to bury Cesaro in their mid-card because, even tho he was getting over, he didn't have 'IT'.  How long did it take them to push Daniel Bryan while he was the most over guy in the industry?  I'm not trying to suggest Spears is Danielson or Cesaro, but he's a talented guy with a ton of upside who was poorly used.  WWE sold this guy as a lower card nothing, and judging by some of the reaction it seems like they sold that idea pretty well!  First night in with AEW, working that battle royal,  he got one of the best reactions of the night - I'd say you oughtta take a chance on a guy who achieved that kind of response.

Spears' issue is that even outside of WWE he still seems like he's trying to act out script, whether it's his or someone else's words. That thing with JR wasn't an interview because Shawn didn't really answer any questions, he had his set promo and stuck to it. I guess the focus is good but he came off awkward to me. There's a reason his nickname isn't The Natural and it's not cause Dustin got it first.

I don't agree, I think that piece was very good/entertaining and did everything it needed to.  He came across as prickly and jaded by his own insecurity, and that absolutely works for this character.

    9 hours ago, EVA said:

Yeah, Spears really reinforced the perception that he’s Just A Guy in that interview.  He need to have some fire.

I'm not sure I saw the same piece.  Ha, seems like such irrational hate, but to each their own.  To me, and I know I'm one of very few that believe this here, but I see this as a great success or revitalization story (potentially).  To be fair, I used to see this guy working Ontario Indies and thought he really stood out from the pack.  Also, he always seemed very hard working, focused, and very affable - maybe that's why I'm blinded by whatever it is so many here see.  Truthfully, I never saw anything more than clips of him as 'Tye fucking Dillinger'.

He'll either prove me right or prove me wrong, and WWE vice versa, very shortly.  But for now I'm very much digging Shawn Spears under the tutelage of Tully Blanchard.

  5. Excellent 'Road to' vid. Control Center was stellar - nice to see Schiavone in a suitable role. And Page executed a heckuva good promo there. The Spears sit down with JR was tremendous - so stoked to see one of my top 5 favorite performers helping to steer the ship of this mission.  Excellent reveal!  Spears suggesting Cody used/abused his former partners and naming the retired cast of characters was smart storytelling - especially by modern wrestling standards. I never saw him in WWE, maybe that's why I'm believing every piece of his AEW story, and excited to see more. But regardless, I don't get the hate for a guy gearing up with what WWE wanted him to wear and following their inane booking.  If I had seen it, rather than read about it, I'd probably be even more excited for this hard working veteran.

Also, if they pull off this story and Spears is elevated there won't be too many under utilized talents not wanting a shot with AEW.

Does anyone else feel like Kenny Omega is no longer enjoying doing his "Goodbye and Good Night" deal? Seemed like he was really into it as a Bullet Club concept, but now he's not in the Bullet Club it's an obligation he's grown to resent a little.

I get that.  Makes  no sense to me who has never seen it before.  But certainly it's quick and inoffensive.  It does feel like another example of them assuming everyone loves everything they do.

As someone that's done probably 98 episodes of a 116 episode podcast that went 2-3 hours EVERY FUCKING TIME and sometimes more, we just put everything out there with our conversation.  If we got tired or bored we stopped.

Sounds like your show is more of a hobby for you then delivering a high quality show, and that's a-okay. I wonder tho, and not specific to your podcast (what is your podcast?) but if podcast producers were conscious of keeping an audience invested they'd take out the cutting tool and keep the quality not quantity.

I stopped watching WWE programming a long time ago, and reading about Raw being a 3 hour show plus all their other shows, and how Mania will go 4-5, I can't even imagine sitting thru that.  Seems like absolutely torture.  Has there ever been a show that went over 3 and a half hours that felt like it was worth it?  Geez, has WWE ever produced a strong 3 hour Raw?

Just getting to the end of this and I enjoyed it, however the one thing that remains a mystery to me is that every other form of entertainment in the world is trying to get shorter and wrestling seems to be going the other way. There is no reason any of this should be more than 3 hours long.

Is this true? Comic book movies going 2 hours plus and the endless hip hop 'playlists' and albums to help quantify numbers for charts.  And the mass amount of music festivals.  I think it's in fact a problem with all entertainment.

Looking forward to this Spears interview.  I can see he hasn't quite won the crowd, but I expect Spears to take the ball and run with it.

By the way,  is Heyman booking now or what?   The show is exactly the same. There was one week where it felt different. Last two weeks have been brutal.

This is why I'm here and reading about this Raw - a show/brand/product I haven't watched in over a decade. The potential of Heyman booking got me interested, but sounds to me like the creative director position is in name only.  Ah, whatever, I didn't care about WWE before, so no spilt milk.

We've got very different perspectives on this.  The pants, the mask, and the boots are just fine - I wouldn't mind a sleeveless t-shirt  ripped at the collar.  Tho, i do agree with the theory that his flabby pale look fits the character. He and Grayson made a fantastic in-ring debut last night - a highlight of the show.  Very excited to see more of them.  I just hope AEW doesn't continue misusing the lights out for their feuds.  On the otherhand, great lights out at the EVOLVE show for Heyman.

I don’t think a disaster is the right word. But yeah, Page isn’t looking like the guy. They really should’ve just went with Kenny somehow as it was originally planned before PAC couldn’t make it to DoN. I mean it’s still pretty clear who the guy is with Kenny.

Best thing would be Omega Vs. Jericho on episode one on TNT for the belt. You get a big outcome on your first episode that pops the crowd, and creates intrigue with Omega winning it. Or you can do Moxley winning it. It’s a really tough call honestly on who should be the champ after episode one.

I don't disagree that a different path ought to have been cut, but it wasn't.  Swerving into a different match is not gonna work.  So best thing would be to focus on how the hell they're going to make it the most important match on the show.  Now, how they do that I have no idea.  Other than making sure to program a good lead in and that Page and Jericho have the match of their lives.  A difficult challenge, but not impossible.

    26 minutes ago, Archibald said:

I didn't mean to hate on Jericho, but its just that it looks like he has moved into rather limited gimmick as far as his matches go. His opponent has to show up, Jericho is not going to carry anyone to a good match. And I don't feel like Page is capable of that. I also don't want to get too hard on Page, but he probably should be in midcard feuding with MJF instead of main eventing.

As far as champs go, I think that either of these would work: Omega, Mox, Cody, Jericho.

I didn't mean you per say, there seems to be a lot of anti-Jericho sentiment.  The idea of 'carrying' depends on your idea of that word.  Carrying in the sense of doing a lot of insane maneuvers, or the bulk of the exciting offense: no, he won't be carrying Page or anybody in that regard.  But laying out a smart match and leading the way,: yes, I think he is capable of that.

I agree that an MJF mid-card feud and continual build in the mid-card is where Page needs to be after this.  Let's hope this Jericho match helps rather than hinders a chance at returning to the main event in the future.

I think Cody is best to stay out of the title picture for now, as to show some credibility as a booker, and sound politics, but he definitely feels like the face of the company right now.  I'm continuously impressed with his big match presence.  And both his in ring (other than that weak springboard kick he does) and promo work has been fantastic.  Moxley and Omega are great suggestions too, but the reality is Page and Jericho are the ones in the match, and I for one look forward to ole Lionheart's Championship heel run.

28 minutes ago, West Newbury Bad Boy said:

Omega-Moxley isn't going to be a crowd killer on the same level as Rock-Hogan, but the principle is the same: If one match is clearly the main event, it should probably go last. I thought Page and Jericho were going to have a tough act to follow before. Now throw in a Bucks-Lucha Bros ladder match? I hope everyone appreciates the challenge ahead of them here.

I think you're right on all accounts.  I have a feeling they just might surprise.

  11. 5 minutes ago, Archibald said:

I think the biggest issue that can't be easily fixed is Hangman Page. He is about to headline their major PPV and nobody cares about him. I feel like he has to deliver his career match here or fans won't buy him as main eventer going forward, he'll basically get a ceiling. Unfortunately he couldn't deliver that great match against NJPW guys, including Omega, and it doesn't look like has improved much if at all since G1. What makes things even worse is that he has rather limited dance partner. And three shows so far did little to nothing to make him look like a credible threat. And he got wins on all of those shows, I think he isn't clicking.

I don't know, I feel like Jericho/Page is a disaster in the making.

It could very well be a disaster.  More so, feels like Jericho-Helmsley trying to Main Event Mania after Rock-Hogan.  The Rock-Hogan in this scenario being the can't miss Moxley-Omega match.  That said, and to your comment, as somebody who had seen very little of Hangman Page prior to AEW, I think he's looked great and I'm interested.  But interested enough to make him a main eventer?  Questionable for sure.  That might be more so for how they booked him into this match - a pre-show battle royal?  Also, he should have annihilated Kip Sabian (further,  who the hell came up with the idea of calling a seemingly cultivated Brit 'superbad'? I can't think of a more inappropriate nickname.  Superbad=James MF'N Brown; not Chris MF'N Martin).

I don't agree with the Jericho hate.  I think he's been excellent both in AEW and NJPW.  Sure he hasn't had the blowaway 6 star match or whatever, but his promos have been really good and his work has been steady.  I think or hope Jericho-Page surprise some ppl (myself included), but it'll be a difficult challenge.  Regardless, I still think Jericho is a good choice for heel champ.

  12. On second watch, SCU-Lucha Brothers was much better than my first impression.  The pre-match mic work was really weak, and made me wonder if we're going to see these guys doing the same thing over and over and over again.  I really like SCU, but tired of catchphrase sing-a-longs - leave that bs to the New York territory.  But the match itself was excellent.  I have really high hopes for Scorpio Sky.  I really like what he's doing and see a huge upside.  The way JR puts him over I'm assuming they see it too.

Beer City Bruiser is awesome. He stole the show at Honor Rising 2018.

I love Bruiser's size and abilities.  When I last tuned into ROH's TV he was out there with (just looked up his name) Brian Milonas doing the lamest New Age Outlaw-like intro that ruined both of them prior to the match.  I like both of those guys. I'd love to see Bruiser as a heel, with a manager, a slight alteration on the look, and a non-gimmicked real name.  Or like 'Beer City Bruiser' Matt ____ or whatever.  I always love seeing big thick (not cut) imposing performers with technical ability.

Just a quick bitch, I'm kinda new to wrestling in 2019 after a long absence, the sling blade version of the clothesline, which seems extremely prominent (I don't remember even seeing it back in the early oughts) is so ugly.  Some of these workers are good enough to make it look not embarrassing, but it always looks so weak.

I also don't get the Meltzer Driver - 'no wasted motion', yeah!?!

  14. I love these post game Q/As.  I'm wary of things when listening to Khan lack objectivity here.

That isn't to say I expect him to bury anybody, but simply addressing that 'some things worked well, some things need some work' would have been suffice.  To suggest this show was great and that the length wasn't an issue is problematic.

  15. The Good: Cima-Omega was certainly good.  I thought the Six Man Tag was strong, and made me look forward to more of these.  Spears, MJF, Darby, Janela, and Havoc all looked good here - Gueverra was good at times (he could benefit from some seasoning).  The 3 Way tag was pretty solid tho total bonehead booking on the Stunt interference.  Page-Sabian was fine - of all these overlong bouts, this would have benefitted the most in shorter form.  I am new to the Hangman but digging his talents.  That said a lot of pressure on him going into a PPV Main Event - is he ready?

I think I'm in the minority here, but I'm really enjoying the unhinged crazy old man Jericho.  The creative freedom works well for him.

The Bad: Rhodes-Bucks - er maybe not bad?  Too long for sure.  Some nice spots, but too much cute bullshit - stop with those choreographed double move sets.  Tho, this is the Bucks thing, right?  Absolutely hate that shit already (will I last as an AEW fan?).  Women's tag was terribly disappointing.  The Joshi girls looked incredibly weak thru much of it.  Bea Priestley intrigued me.  After 2 matches I am trying to tell myself Britt Baker isn't overrated and lacking in talent, but I'm wrestling with this idea. *EDIT: A concussion is said to have happened and it makes sense.  Whomever said it was correct - this women's division is looking pretty weak to start.

Lastly, the Lucha Brothers-SCU.  Enough of the indy-riffic and incredibly lame mic work.  I really like SCU, and I love Daniels twirling his mic strutting about, but we really don't need them eating up time with their New Age Outlaws inspired nonsense - let's cut that shit down.  Also, what the f%&* is that Pentagon Jr. glove shit about - another spot making their refs look like idiots.  The Luchas are capable, and I think I like them, but they do all kinds of dumb shit that seems to be completely accepted amongst the fanbase.  I hope weekly national television, with guys watching back the tapes of their segments with discernment, that they clean up some of this shit.  Catchphrase bullshit is WWE lite, and enough already.  The match itself wasn't all that bad, maybe my expectations were too high.  More blatant interference in front of the ref.  At least Daniels was tossed.

The Ugly: Alex Marvez is completely unqualified, and everybody knows it.  Yeah, you could make an argument that he's only had 2 shows, but if it smells like shit and sounds like shit... Further, JR is still yet to find his legs, I think the 3 man booth is not helping.  Marvez's awful commentary is a clear problem, but JR and Excalibur need to get better too.  Excalibur is overselling so much - I can't stand being told how great a match is.  Tell me how physical it was or whatever, but don't tell me, the viewer, who isn't enjoying it, that the Rhodes-Bucks match is great and historic.  Have some respect for the intelligence of the viewer.  He's also overselling talent in unnecessary ways that doesn't help put them over.  Not to mention his lame esoteric namedropping - I mean I know those guys (Maeda, Sabre), but it sounds lame.  I'll hold back on this being a bad thing, it's just a thing, but I'd love it if they called moves by their universal names rather than the personalized gimmicked name.  Unless, of course, it's a finisher.  Especially when the same move is used in every match with a different name each time.

Brandi-Allie: just terrible.  Brandi is a great valet, and I bet she's working hard behind the scenes.  That said, she has no business being in the ring.  This is the second match for Allie and 0 for 2.  Tho, I suspect from the fandom that she's just been saddled with a couple of turds.  I'm into the Kongs, but Aja wasn't saving anything there.  Horrible.

I really dig Aubrey Edwards work thus far, but she and they fucked up with Riho’s pin in the six woman tag.

Librarian-Sonny Kiss: why was this even on here.  I like Sonny's charisma, but he has one of the weakest looking move sets I've ever seen.  The goddamned top rope splits!?  Peter Halston was kept to a minimum with this horrible gimmick, but still 'why even bother?'

Last of the uglies, with the money they have, they need to get a stylist in.  A number of performers could be elevated so quickly with some style guidance (Jimmy Havoc, the Dark Order, Angelico, most of the Gaijin women, Sabian, etc.)  And I don't think it's ever changing, but the music this company is using is amongst the worst I've ever heard.  It's like we've stepped back in time to the late 90s and the worst it had to offer.  Such an incredible array of bad taste.  It's comical how bad it is.

In closing, this was a weak show, but it had some moments and it's only show number 3. I have a lot of patience for this crew.  They're doing a lot of things right - I like Cody's reply to a question about going over time in the press conference - that they want there guy's getting time and that's why it ran long. Glad they want there guys to have time, BUT just program less matches/segments!  Watch an NXT PPV for example.

My hope is they take seriously their mistakes, and learn from them.  We'll know quickly if they're capable of peering out of their bubble and seeing what doesn't work.  The continuation of the Librarian gimmick and Dirty Chin Marvez is a sign that suggests they have not gained the ability to look at the product objectively.  But again, it's only the third show.

Ha, you mean he looks 20 years older than he did 20 years ago?

Yeah, what are the best bouts that MLW has to offer over the course of their relaunch?  I've been watching for a couple months, but I've yet to see any matches that have stuck as real memorable.  Not to say there haven't been some good matches.  I really liked the Aries match with Adam Brooks from a couple weeks ago, but it wasn't really rave worthy.

  17. I'm not so convinced AEW couldn't come up with a better name than LAX.  It seems smart to me that TNA would want their company creations to keep their names.  Adds more to their videotape library/back catalog.

I haven't seen Eddie Kingston perform in many years. When last seen he was a loud oaf with very little to offer. The quintessential 'mudshow' wrestler. That said, it sounds like I'd be missing out to assume he's the same as he was.  Anybody got links to one of his recent  standout performances?

Very interested to see Shoko Nakajima.  AEW, with a great deal of help from the Joshi ranks, is making me believe they were on to something when Khan suggested their Women's division would be to their shows what the cruiserweight division was to WCW.

Cornette's rage over the OC gimmick is a bit irrational. This isn't slo-mo grenade levels of kayfabe bashing.  Nor is it in any way objectionable or kinda gross like Joey Ryan's penis antics. He's too cool for school and most often, it seems, pays the price for it.  I love it!  OC's execution of it all leads me to believe he's going to be a big bright shiny star. Thanks to the previous posters for the OC match tips.

You speak of LAX as if they are used up talent from another promotion. A lot of fans don’t honestly know anything about them, so the idea they won’t be seen as fresh doesn’t hold up.

Not sure how you arrived at that conclusion, but I certainly did not mean to indicate that. Truth be told LAX is completely new to me.  I haven't seen more than a few highlights of them.  What I was trying to say was, are they a whole lot better or more valuable than what they have (Angelico/Evans, SCU, Best Friends, Dark Order etc.)?  I compare as to say they've got a bunch of strong teams already and only so many hours of TV to fill.  But I really honestly don't know, curious what those that have followed both them and Impact think about their potential in the promocion?

  20. Quote

According to the WON, there are people in WWE who believe that LAX will likely start up with them in September, but most close to the matter expect that the team will sign with AEW. The two would have more freedom and be featured stars in AEW, where their style will be a better fit. In addition, Konnan has been a major part of their act and there is at least a chance that he could continue in that role in AEW. WWE would likely start them in NXT and there is almost no chance Konnan would be brought in. In addition, while they would make more money if they made it to the top of WWE, AEW will pay them more than WWE would to put them in NXT.

As for Impact, aka John Hennigan, he’s older at 39 but is still able to work an athletic style. As of a few months ago, he still considered his acting work to be his primary job and the wrestling work just paid the bills so he could make a name for himself in acting. He would be able to do that in AEW with the more limited schedule there, and WWE would have to approve any outside work he wanted to do. That said, he is still not leaning in either direction according to the latest word. Hennigan is of course known for his run in WWE as John Morrison, where he worked from 2002 (in developmental) through 2011.

Company jumps are always exciting on paper, but do either John Impact or the LAX bring a whole lot to the mix in either company?  Or are they better off building their own, perhaps more fresh, stars?

  21. I suppose 3-4 ways allow for greater roster exposure, but truly hoping they slow down the multis and stick to straight up one on one or two on two tags and singles.  Or 6 man/woman tags - looking forward to the 6 man on the pre.  Also looking forward to the Dark Order debut.  From what I've seen of them on the Canadian Indies they look really solid.  This whole card interests me.  I suspect either Luchas/SCU or Cima-Omega to be the darkhorse.  I expect the Main to be nothing short of excellent.

Huge opportunity for Orange Cassidy to dazzle in a setting like this to show he isn’t just a comedic talent.

I gathered from a few clips that he had more to offer than his fantastic comedy gimmick, but curious, are there any matches floating online to recommend that showcase his in-ring abilities?

  23. Paris, Texas is a slice of perfection. That Criterion package is really beautiful and worth the price, but why not rent it? I mean online, if you don't have a swell video store or a good public library in your part of the world.

Has anyone here had a chance to see 'The Dead Don't Die'?  I didn't think it was by any means 'high end Jarmusch', but there's much to enjoy. Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi and Adam Driver all have some terrific moments. It'll no doubt fly under the radar, but worth a look.
