  1. LA Knight breaking through at age 40 is absolute quality. Really, really fun character work. Hope he gets a rocket of a run at some point; not entirely dissimilar to how Acclaimed were slept on for far too long despite audience reactions.

  2. c. 1 in 4 viewers tuning out within 90 mins & the demo down 25% on a YOY comparison. More & more quarter hour segments falling into the 700kish viewer abyss. Hey, just extend the Moxley/Hangman feud ad infinitum: that'll work. Get a proper scheduler and character-planner in, ❄️

  3. The same crowd that made goo-goo eyes at AEW's children's playbook booking, utterly oblivious to the very predictable descent into ham-fisted carnyness that shedded hundreds of thousands of viewers by the month in darkened venues (and sometimes even by the hour during the show of late), somehow finding fault with the best, most mature story told in years and years that has racked millions of viewers week after week to pop after pop from arenas full of people. Figures. Fetishists will be fetishists.

As one who thought the last 6-9 months of Cody's run in AEW was utter self-serving nonsense, he/they have done incredibly well with the reinvention here. They head into a main event / pre-main event scene on the tail of this storyline with 7 (+) convincing characters all with their own attributes, all extremely over in their own way, all of whom will have countless avenues to explore after WM is done. Now that's how you structure a high end product and tailor your top of the card offering in a way that evolves character and commercials while offering a sustainable way forward. The numbers do not lie.

How are all the doctors and researchers going to get rid of cancer if you keep going around creating more of it?

To adopt a more serious tone for a moment - it is my fault the trust-fund baby, who has presided over an absolute dumpster fire of a Promotion that had a semblance of promise 18 months ago, put his head unnecessarily and unprovoked above the parapet to have It lopped off by the nerdy guy who was the butt of all of Dana's jokes at UFC while social media looks on laughing?

Hey, I just observe how epically -- for all the funds at their disposal -- the narcissist at the helm has & continues to be hell bent on fucking this all up. Not just how they fucked it up -- but how eminently foreseeable it was just how they would fuck it up. They've burnt their main event scene to cinders. Wardlow and Kingston's momentum both blown to smithereens as was always going to be the case (the latter was set up perfectly to pitch with MJF - what a waste). Once this papier-mâché Danielson storyline runs its course, there's absolutely nothing there to go to next. They've killed any remote chance decent talent from WWE jumps over for the foreseeable following the 2021 acquisitions. Top of the card is in total stasis.

Of the truly over homegrown acts (Acclaimed + MJF), the former they actually suspended and took off TV for doing their own schtick before Acclaimed broke out despite it and now they've killed one of the decent things they had going by moving the titles to a couple of faceless jobbers no one at home can even tell apart. Amusingly they continue to endorse & give TV time to acts like Jericho who clearly rot the product from within (structurally + aesthetically) while Keith Lee lumbering return, barely able to get up off the mat as though he's spent the past 8 weeks off-screen camped out at Arby's and allergic to the gym, crystallises how much exorbinantly-paid incoming talent have taken them for fools. They could not have mismanaged this ROH stuff more if they'd tried - what a completely irrelevant disaster that's all been. Kenny Omega's out there bouncing basket balls on a Friday night for less views than the "Ariel Helwani Out of Context" Twitter page.

They've touched the 820s on the landmark show; the late 700s will come next because they have proven they cannot draw new eyes and even the long-term fetishists are catching on to how plain-bad a lot of this stuff is getting. You can blame someone like me for telling you it was all going to happen, or you can hope the 'leader' of the organisation actually starts to take some responsibility for the utterly unprofessional mess he is presiding over and my comments become obsolete. Let's see.

In the meantime, ☃️ lives on. Imagine Vince back in the day getting served by the likes of Helwani. Jesus.

Ariel, please stop posting on DVDVR.

You're right, you're right - enough is enough. Booker of The Year will surely get eyes away from this bread & circuses and back to the product that counts, by scaling 1 mil views for the 2nd time in 5 months with Moxley/Evil Uno and Big Bill gracing screens headed into the quarterly PPV.

While this is all very amusing, it's just more symptomatic of just how much the wheels have fallen off over there for what, going on 12 months now. What a farce.

Called the Bitcoin bottom to the exact day in November; calling the 700ks for Dynamite on deck in short order. Arenas may be so darkened by then it'll be hard to see them but when you know, you know 🔮

  6. Jesus. Bad look for the Performance Artists world when the ultimate Beta of the UFC Community descends and starts swiping heads from all & sundry left right and centre. Then again I guess when you've been on the end of a Nick Diaz threat, the combined brawn/brains of The Snowman & Bixenspan look like something of a different proposition. These guys need to know their lanes. Ariel loving it out there.

  7. Wasn’t a joke. Ariel’s ⛄️ riposte was excellent. Deservedly being posted on all of Khan’s subsequent tweets now. What a chump. Getting wound up then served by the geeky UFC guy who Dana would walk all over. He’d be best served reflecting on why he’s racking 800k viewerships with dying live gates without a single compelling storyline top to bottom in the company (as the fetishists even recognise) while WWE go from strength to strength in every respect.

We will re-visit that post before the end of this year. I won't call you vulgar for that insult, as your naivety is cute.

    Anyway, back to the wrestling!

Took a week or so longer than expected, but didn't forget about this.

    BTC Nov. 22nd -- 15,550 (Actual bottom)

    BTC Today -- 19,807

27.5% rise (called 30). Perhaps we see 30 next week before next plunge down? Who knows?

To keep this relevant, in a wrestling / sporting context there is a reason McMahon's are scrabbling to get out of WWE while the likes of Fenway Sports + Glazer family look to sell Liverpool FC & Man United FC respectively. Coming year will be a whirl.

Enjoy the wrestling all. See ya!

But what you're forgetting sir, is that @AxB is actually a Clegane...

No - he was just being rude and offensive. Given how the 'collective' are quick to call out gross behaviour in the outside world, it is enormous hypocrisy to let it fly or even 'like' / embrace it within the community. Call a spade a spade. No excuses: no "having said that..". Have manners; be civil. Easy.

As much as I am not a fan of stuff like The Breakfast Club and The Shade Room and a lot of the weird narratives being pushed on those platforms (with the former, recently, the idea black people need to get into crypto ain't really looking so hot right now), I can admit that is a bigger plus for a Jade Cargill than what I probably would have expected.

I mean this whole thing with Bow Wow is helping his career more than her's really. Hell, in a few years, Bow Wow probably won't even be the most famous person in his immediate family. His daughter Shai, from a previous relationship with the lovely Joie Chavis, is already kinda a TikTok/social media star already. She is on the verge of easily eclipsing his celebrity. So he needs this more than Jade to stay relevant.

However, I do like and hope that AEW keeps a more nuanced approach. As much I love it today for the nostalgia factor, the HBO approach with KO Nation where we will have hip hop performances between B and C level fights and move boxing from late night to the middle of the afternoon didn't work. When 50 Cent and Jay Z did it with SMS Boxing and Roc Boxing respectively, it didn't work at all. Triller is still trying to jam rap in everyone's face. Still ain't working. You have to keep being subtle and also remember the actual content is still king.

All you need really is the rub from being around it.

Jade would seem destined to out-grow PW, full star-power. Still only 30, too. p.s. -- likely a 30% pure upside in BTC at the moment, but deep down (as with all assets) next year. As with all things, time will tell ..

I agree with your point that the name calling doesn’t help matters.

That said…I see that you’re relatively new here (unless you’re an old poster who’s back under a new account), so you’re probably not aware that this is A_K’s bit. He pretty much exclusively shows up after AEW has posted a down rating, or some other bad news on AEW has dropped, to post wildly negative, arguably often bad faith, doom-and-gloom takes in hopes of starting these kind of arguments. It’s a pattern that’s been going on for years now (probably, who’s counting?), and people who’ve been here for a while are understandably tired of it. So some might have a shorter fuse for his posts than benevolent new members like yourself.

Account is dated 2016. "I don't agree with calling people cunts and clowns .. that said ..". I have posted plenty of positive AEW comments over the years when the direction and emphasis of characters has been good -- if you think they are on a good trajectory here with the decisions taken, all power to you. Time will tell.

Carry on y'all. Just remember to be civil; the social-hypocrisy is at its flimsiest when you are calling people cunts and clowns with no provocation other than "bad faith" (??) statements.

  12. 13 minutes ago, AxB said:

That goes both ways. Can we get an "I hate AEW and it's dying!" thread, so everyone who wants to come on here and be a complete cunt about things can talk to each other there, and people who actually like watching wrestling can talk about it without this whole slough of despond trying to drag the mood down?

Woah. "Let's forcibly shut down discourse because I don't like the sentiment!". Not sure that's the way to go to be honest. "Cunts", "clowns" .. anything else to throw out there? Pass over a comment or debate to the other-side; AEW gets credit (e.g. - Kingston / MJF would be a compelling storyline from two people who have built out unique & over characters), the question of why the tv audiences have abandoned in droves deserves conversation too (just as it did frequently & deservedly when the shoe was on the other foot with WWE). The world need not be candy floss or ash.

    Civility wins the day.

Do we know when MJF's contract is up outside of '2024'?

I'd love for him to hold the title for the full calendar year of 2023 and begin to threaten walking out as champion if Tony doesn't pay him "more money than any wrestler in history".

This leads to a flurry of challengers culminating in Eddie Kingston taking the title from MJF in early/mid 2024.

During 2023 I'd think defending vs the other "pillars" (Darby, Sammy and Jungle Boy) is a must, as well as a Danielson match and getting back into Wardlow's orbit. I think Kenny as the 6th gives you a great defence to build up to every couple of months with the occasional TV match in between.

Ironically I think the less that is spoken about on air, the more likely it is that he quietly leaves at some point over the next 18 or so months.

RE: AEW -- the biggest concern for them at this point is not finding a new deal for ROH, its keeping the existing Dynamite deal they already have. Big ratings week for them. Did not appreciate they went as low as 750k during the last show w/ the 800kish average. Given for a long time they were talking up getting more money on the next run, difficult to see how that tallies given the YOY comparisons at this point plus change in economic climate.

I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the promo, then. I did hear him thanking everyone who came and all the AJPW legends including Akiyama, then for once, peacefully ending the promo when told he had to go. Well, this WOULD be a very good way to jump-start his quest to the top. He can't be questioning if he's good enough after this. He must have proved it to himself here!

MJF / Kingston may be the best program they can run actually. Taps into Regal's disdain of "sadist" vs thoroughbred. Promos would be great & authentic.

I'm just enjoying watching people fantasy book someone else's fantasy fed. Like, get your own 😉

Also loving the Apter headlines passing as comments. "Delegate, Coach Tony! The Fans' Impassioned Plea to Tony Khan"; "Is Tony K in Bed With the Bookies? Our Investigation Will Amaze You!"; "The Only Way is Down - Why MJF's Championship Reign Will Sink AEW!"; "Sign Our Petition to Get Bryan Danielson Doing What We Want"; "Is Jon Moxley Back on the Turpentine? We Speak To Someone Who Has No Idea".

Wait, wait - you forgot one! "He could walk on water and people would say "he can't even swim!"

Ok, phew, now the agenda is all ironed out and the discourse is well-reasoned. That's better.

  17. Thread is perfectly alive. If somebody posits the idea that the crowd cheering MJF is down to 2022 being this remarkably "immoral and nihilistic" world we live in compared to a decade ago, which was demonstrably far sleazier in many ways than today, they should be able to deal with a riposte without becoming .. scratchy? I can see it is a sensitive subject though, clearly, so happy to let that pessimistic view be embraced.

As for why MJF was actually cheered .. well, as other posters have already highlighted, its because he has the best character work in the company and has done a beast of a job at keeping things fresh even when dealt some very poor material / circumstances and most of the rest of the show has become terribly stale around him. Or .. it could be because they're all immoral nihilists. Who knows. Carry on.

I don’t think we should underestimate how much more nihilistic and amoral people are on average than in 2011, especially in my neck of the woods.

Oh no, you're right. The Jersey Shore era of 2011 with Snooki and Pauly D was a bastion of  social morality and good-taste compared to today. Whatever was I thinking?! Kids today just don't have manners.

As Bob Dylan sang, “In Jersey everything's legal as long as you don’t get caught.”

Mate - the Jersey Shore was at its absolute peak in 2011. This is not some new age of amorality: if anything it has heightened in the other direction (see: Caster's previous suspension).
