The blocking of the girls at the picnic, and generally throughout the film, is so perfect too. Surreal film and something I'll have in the back of my mind for days. IT DOESN'T LEAVE YOU. IT BECOMES A PART OF YOU (like the chainsaw in Running Man).
Much of the direction for the search portion of the film is taken straight from L'Avventura. The central focus is on the rocks, humans just wander in and out of the frame because they are relatively insignificant in comparison to the natural wonder and mystery of the rock.
And so much sexual tension from just about every character in the film, too.

Yeah, things have gone too far with some of these blockbusters. It's one thing if you're pushing Batman, Iron Man, or a Pixar film. Those are licenses to print money. But Hollywood has totally forgotten how to produce a mid-range film. Maybe in a couple of years, we'll see them come back in style.
A friend and I were trying to think of films the past half decade or more that are very good-to-excellent and not giant blockbusters. We had a very hard time, but to be fair I don't watch a tonne of newer movies (perhaps due to this point).

Gotdayum, Picnic at Hanging Rock is like an Australian sequel to L'Avventura. So beautiful and haunting, with great subtle thematic points made in the background. I haven't seen many but I'd say it's a perfectly made film.

I think they were after Bernard from Mineiro originally and Chadli is the contingency. Bernard's likely off to Porto, who will then sell him for thrice what they paid for him.

I just did a culture victory with the Shoshone in Brave New World and it was great. I don't know if the DLC is the right deal at $30, it's certainly enjoyable though... but $12.50 for the gold edition is great value.

When's the last time this happened? NBA Live is just returning after hitting rock bottom in 2009, but that was driven by poor sales.

Yep, Oilers were bad but the Flames were even worse at drafting through the '90s and 00's. Ottawa and San Jose also brutal. It was a bad decade to build through the draft, that's for sure. The percentage of players who made it as NHLers didn't drop that much (but then there were more teams for them to make it on), but little high end talent.

Nedved wasn't a bust but that jerk changed teams more often than a confused Christian homosexual. Quinn's Canucks followed that beauty up with the Stojanov pick in '91.
Pat Falloon was an awesome bust too. Sweet hair, though. Drafted in-between Lindros and Niedermayer. Also, can't help but laugh at the Jets taking Aaron Ward at 5, one spot ahead of Peter Forsberg. I can't really blame Bonsignore for not meeting expectations when he was supposed to replace Gretzky and Messier.
More fun than busts are the guys that went really high and had huge expectations but turned out to be only average NHLers, like Mike Rathje or Trevor Kidd.

I think you could make a line of Burrows-Grabovski-Kesler work pretty darn well and ride the top two lines into dust as Tortorella does. Gilbert had a horrible year partly down to luck. His possession numbers were very good, his on-ice SV% terrible. He'll bounce back and should be had on the cheap. Kostka is underrated and Lydman still is useful but not as good as the previous two.
You could also have the Sedins, then a Kesler line and Grabo line as 2A-2B and play the 4th 5-8 minutes a game.

It should make for an interesting season if nothing else. There's not much saying for our chances when they rest on both David Booth and Ryan Kesler staying healthy.
Still interested in seeing where Grabovski ends up. If I ruled the world, I'd move that Bieska there for futures and sign Grabo and one of the quality D-men on the market (Lydman, Gilbert, Kostka).

Except he'd have to buy Luongo out next summer. Only buyout periods were the accelerated buyout period at the beginning of the year (which wasn't actually originally scheduled but put forth to solve the Redden/Gomez, thx Slats, issues), late June/early July of this year, and a similar period before next summer's free agency period begins.
I think teams will fall so in love with the idea of "get out of jail mostly free" cards, they'll mandate one buyout a year for every team when the next CBA is negotiated. Players won't mind too much because they get their money (mostly) and sign new deals coming out richer. Only costs them their pride.

Keith Aucoin was awesome for the Isles last season and will definitely see some time with the Blues one way or another.
Also, holy shit New Jersey... Trade package for Kovalchuk, sign Kovalchuk to stupid deal, get punished for said contract but don't forfeit the first rounder when picking 29th, trade this year's 1st rounder for young goalie, sit young goalie behind fading star, Kovalchuk leaves for more colourful currency, team will likely finish in the bottom 10 if not 5, have no pick for their troubles, and Cory leaves in another year.

He's half the player Sobotka is but an improvement on Nichol. As Charlie said, removing his antagonizing qualities is akin to neutering him. Without trolling, he's a below average 4th line centre most of the time.
Hitch is smart enough to recognize this and will unleash the Lap Trollface.

From the Whitecaps' inaugural MLS season. Down 3-0 at the 70th minute, they score the second and third both deep into injury time to draw. The comeback starts at ~4:50.

Amonte was just under PPG as a rookie and Weight was a solid prospect putting up good numbers in the A and NHL prior to the proposed trade. That's not mentioning the $15 or $20 million included in both offers. Ridiculous value but Lindros was supposed to be the best player of all time.
I'm pumped for FHM '14. It's still in the beta stage but it's getting fairly close to playable and they're going to be adding online support after release. Early '90s online league would be soooo amazing.
Another nice nostalgia trip: NHLnumbers.com is doing a review of the NHL draft from the first entry draft in '79 all the way to '09. Really cool. Who's your favourite '90s bust? Double O Tverdovsky was bad ass for a while but certainly didn't live up to the hype. Yashin had a better career than I remembered and even Daigle had a few useful years.

I can't think of a player getting the equivalent of either of those deals today. Not even Crosby back in '05. Though, between the two deals, I'd go with New York's and I absolutely love Foppa.

Here's what Quebec was offered from the Rangers for Lindros in '92:
Tony Amonte, Doug Weight, Alexei Kovalev, James Patrick, John Vanbiesbrouk and $20 million in cash.
I think that Quebec would've had to include Chris Simon and a 2nd as part of the deal. How that would've changed the '90s... Stevens still probably drills Big E at one point or another if he's with the Rags, though.

I remember enjoying Master and Commander for what it was. Not a great movie but good enough and it didn't drag much. I'll give The Last Wave a go but I can't see it outdoing da Rock, that was right down my alley. Truman Show is one of my favourites of the late '90s and I've been meaning to watch Gallipoli for close to a decade now. I'm going all in on a Peter Weir trip.
