I really like Punk, and I'm interested in Wardlow. But in no way was this anywhere as crisp an Inside Cradle as Bret vs Diesel.

That's the problem with Punk imitating the Hitman. He's notoriously pretty sloppy in a lot of his execution.

  2. So Revolution is starting to take shape. Premature guesses:

Cole vs. Hangmin, Jericho vs. Kingston, Bucks vs. Red Dragon (I'm over the stupid copyright spelling), MJF vs. Punk, Shida vs. Deeb.

Tag and women's titles are up in the air. Don't think Statlander is the PPV challenger. I'd be fine with Rosa beating Mercedes and moving on to finally getting hands on Baker for the title change, but that does seem like a lot between now and March 5th. Statlander doesn't have a lot of momentum and they've been leaning towards either Rosa or Soho to be the one that finally beats Baker. It'll be interesting to see how often Jade is featured.

Danielson needs a dance partner and I wonder if they hold off on unifying the TNT title for the ppv. Sting and Darby will be involved. So don't think Wardlow and Spears makes the cut. They've traditionally had 10 matches on their ppv cards, with the first being on the buy-in. There is now one more title to feature so there will be big names not on the card.

Doesn't appear to be a named dynamite between now and the ppv either.

I want AEW's cable TV shows to be closer to when Dynamite first started airing where the booking seemed pretty fearless when it came to wins and losses. Maybe my memory is poor, but I seem to recall most matches having clean finishes without chicanery to protect heels and faces. Dudes, both men and women, just straight up lost and won.

This is what I've been pissing and moaning about for a while. They've basically turned into an '80s territory where so many of the finishes include shenanigans. Dynamite was way better booked in this regard in the first year.

I still don't really get frontloading the Dynamites with your biggest matchup. Just seems counter-intuitive to me. Why not build to a match like Punk/Wardlow instead of blowing the wad in the opening segment?

Doesn't the show always bleed viewers? Crowds also burn out. It's the "easy" way I suppose.

  5. I am going to take the opposite approach and say I enjoyed the first hour pretty well but again thought the show fell off in the second hour. The Diesel/Bret Survivor Series '95 finish makes sense with Punk's comeback leaning so heavily into Bret homage and how highly they think of Wardlow but needing to progress the story of MJF and Punk while ratcheting up the tension between the big man and MJF at the same time. Mission accomplished on all fronts and I was kinda taken aback with how decisive they went with Wardlow until the Bret finish. Great match. Wardlow is so ready. So are we.

That they followed the same pattern with the Hobbs/Dante match, which was pretty damn good up until the end, was the first sign of questionable stuff tonight. How many people does Dante have on his side now? Lio, Sydal, Moriarty, and now Lethal. What the hell?

I'm fine with Deeb/Shida going the way it did but there should've been another women's match. Instead we got a way too long and competitive match between Acclaimed and Bear Country. Sheesh that was rough and the crowd was dead until Stanger came out.

I'm not his biggest fan, but I think King is a fine addition and has chemistry with Black. That Matt Hardy/Penta match was even worse than the tag match that followed it. Holy shit, that was painful. I get that it all served a purpose but neither of those needed to go that long and so close together when the "main event" was Sammy vs. Daniel Garcia. Too much overbooking in the promotion the last chunk of time for me and the second hour was full of it. They threw way too much at us and I don't think much of it really stuck.

Garcia is so fucking good already. He gets pro wrestling. He never breaks his character. Everything he does, whether it be his moves, psychology, or reactions, comes from knowing his character perfectly. He's only going to get better. I think he may have a higher ceiling than Sammy. While he's completely different, and Sammy's style is easier for fans to latch onto, I think I enjoy watching Garcia over Sammy already and he carried this match.

That Pac video was excellent. Two for two with those.

  6. It's kinda sad that I see all four matches having shenanigans. Sammy will beat Garcia but it's likely 2.0 get involved. If Hobbs is beating Dante again, Starks is probably playing a part otherwise why book the match if not to showcase Dante's growth? Ain't no fuckin' way MJF won't be in the Punk/Wardlow match. It's Deeb's turn to pick up the W and she's been cheating to win, like almost all the heels in the company lately. I hope I'm wrong.

Is Pac legit hurt or is he just selling the mist? He hasn't had a match in about six weeks.

Was wondering the same. Is it still a lot of work to travel between the UK and US? His run in AEW has been plagued by bad luck and start stops due to mostly unavoidable circumstances.

AZM has been using this for 2-3 years now. Its nice to see someone actually winning matches with it.

I know this should go in the Stardom thread but holy shit what was with Momo punting AZM in the head like that? I stopped watching Stardom after Hana's death for the most part... I'm guessing that's Momo going extra evil against QQ?

That submission is a huge, huge improvement over the hammerlock DDT for Andrade. It looked even more brutal on last week's dark or elevation. Andrade thinking Darby's a child (mocking him for being child-like) is a little silly for a guy that should be moving up to the main event. Dude was on twitter asking for new Los Ingos and I think his cool rich character could really be helped by Roosh's intensity. Dragon Lee is a freak, so would love to see him in AEW tearing it up with the other people that have no regard for their well being.

edit: (yes i will keep repeating Rush and Dragon Lee in AEW in attempt to manifest it into reality, like the Ben Simmons to Portland trade)

I don't know if Baker has cleared out the women's division just yet.

Per Cagematch, since winning the title, she's defended it successfully against Nyla, Conti, Red Velvet, Statlander, Ruby, and Riho. She also has non-title wins over Anna Jay and Abadon.

You still have a match with Thunder Rosa on the table -- you could easily do a title match around the time of the first anniversary of the Lights Out Match between the two. I can also see the winner of the Shida/Deeb match later this week challenging Baker -- Baker/Deeb could be fun, and you can also do the "rematch clause" gimmick for Shida.

I don't think Shida is a realistic threat to the title. That would be like one of those Kenny Omega defenses or the Riho match last night. Not talking kayfabe wise but for shootskies. Division is heading towards that Omega/Hangman territory of predictability and it feels like we are waiting for Rosa to get to Britt. Hayter would be fresh and interesting but I don't think they'd belt somebody they've given about 30 seconds of mic time in 5 or so months of TV.

Edit: to elaborate, I don't think you can go from a charismatic supernova like Baker to really great wrestler that they don't yet have faith in to cut promos. Rosa is really their only option unless you go back to Nyla Rose at this point and that seems unlikely.

Well her and Rosa are 1-1 with Rosa holding the second win

Yeah but we know it's not going to be Rosa because she's occupied with Martinez now and likely to be the one to dethrone Britt, which doesn't feel like it's happening anytime soon.

the other side of that is the Psycho Sid style "I've Had Enough" where the henchman/bodyguard stays heel and flips their former employer by beating them down too bad [after a championship bout loss].

Great idea except this was the biggest babyface move of Sid's career and he didn't go far enough.

  12. I get that we just got an incredible world title match for free on Wednesday but maybe don't do this:

    AEW Battle of the Belts

if tonight's card is what we ended up with.

Also, Jim Ross came back fired up and last two shows he's been very subdued. I can only begin to imagine how difficult his battle has been and that would explain it but I don't think I've ever heard him more sedated than tonight.

  13. So if they're pulling the trigger on Wardlow fucking up MJF soon, no way they do the same story with Hayter at the same time. But Hayter is the only credible and immediate challenge to the title that Britt hasn't beaten and they're building obvious tension despite how tonight ended. Britt has kinda cleared out the division of interesting challengers minus Jamie.
