  1. That was an episode of Rampage that happened and will easily be forgotten.

Opener was ok, the dynamics of the Page/Hardy/Cassidy team being the best part. I’m pretty tired of the super predictable “every member of both teams will hit a big move alternating until everyone is down on the mat”. Wednesday should be a fun spot fest.

Pillman Jr. is just bad. His pedestrian mid-80s offense is fine and in character. The problem is that you can see him trying to remember his next step in the match layout, disrupting any kind of flow and requiring a lot of standing around by his opponent. Plus, his moves where he is being reversed are delivered so lightly, like in his head he’s like “this kick to the body is going to be caught and spun around, so my job is just to put my foot out there to be caught” and rather than deliver something that looks like a kick he just kind of sticks his foot out to be caught. Swerve and his strange style was also a bad dance partner.

I think the homegrown vs. the intruders is the best way to salvage the poor reception for Saraya and the fans basically willing Hayter and Baker (to a lesser extent) to be faces. I also think Toni Storm is a great heel. The spray paint was a huge mistake and hopefully they abandon that, it’s just too copycat. I hope Ruby Soho tells both teams she’s not there for their nonsense, she’s there for herself and the belt.

Main was solid, I was surprised Rush gave Daniels as much as he did, didn’t exactly build him up as the badass who is going to injure Danielson on Wednesday. The ringside cable choke needs to be dropped IMO, at least it was saved for PiP.

I'd say you end up with Jimbo Fisher but A&M did that to themselves.

God, I still haven’t trained my brain to think of a game when I hear the word “cornhole”

First time I heard of it was driving on backcountry Ohio roads and seeing farms with signs on the road saying "Cornhole available here" and being EXTREMELY CONFUSED.

  4. I'm back in Austin and my house still has no power, going on 57 hours and the power company has no estimate on when it will be restored. While I will likely be moving with my wife and cats to a friend's house this evening so we don't freeze, they don't have cable so I will have to try and catch this one on YouTube or illegal streaming later on. Based on the announced matches, nothing seems like Can't Miss at least.

edit to add: I'm currently at my office charging up all the electronics and external battery packs, and also using the shower.

For what it's worth, Darby has said repeatedly that he always feels great and he attributes that to a ton of stretching and massage therapy. I think he's just like some MMA fighters that have a concrete head. Eventually that wears off, but for now he's good.

Knowing he is straight-edge, I assume that by not using alcohol or heavy pain-killers to numb the pain helps him be more aware of what he can and can't do and when to take it easy.

Confirmed live event series "House Rules", first one on March 18 in Troy, Ohio

"Feb. 1, 2023 - AEW CEO, GM and Head of Creative, Tony Khan today announced the launch of AEW House Rules", a live event series taking place on select weekends in markets across the country. Continuing the promotion's meteoric rise and following the success of "AEW: Dynamite" on Wednesdays on TBS and "AEW: Rampage" on Fridays on TNT, fans can expect an up close and personal experience at local venues along with a spectacular and engaging environment.

These non-televised, live events will showcase an electrifying mix of matchups featuring the stars of AEW. Each event offers an even more immersive experience for fans, including customized merchandise, unique ways to engage with featured talent and in-show interactions different from what is featured on televised AEW programming.

The first AEW House Rules show will take place on Saturday, March 18 in Troy, Ohio at the Hobart Arena and will feature Ohio's own Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Dr. Britt Baker, Darby Allin, Orange Cassidy, and many more. Tickets for all AEW House Rules show start at $20 plus fees and can be purchased at AEWTIX.com starting Friday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. ET. Further show dates will be announced in the coming weeks."

Weird to run the first show in what’s basically a suburb of Dayton 6 weeks after they run Dynamite/Rampage in Dayton. These venues are like 30 minutes apart.

  7. Opener was just another brutal all-out brawl where I wasn’t sure who was going to win. Very enjoyable.

Makes sense to have Bunny be paid to distract Hayter while Saraya and Toni jump Britt, since BB&B are total mercenaries. Hayter is going to beat the crap out of her now.

Outrunners, yes!! Fun little squash! Good luck trying to turn The Acclaimed heel, don’t see anyway that happens against the Ass Boys.

I guess I can handle Cage as “huge guy who makes strong face look very impressive”, Takeshita looked great in this.

Danielson-Thatcher was excellent but I would actually possibly prefer a match where there isn’t already the “damaged body part target” storyline just to see some more fun catch stuff. And then Lard Lad brawls with MJF and gets a match next week! And we get Danielson-Rush!

The Jade-Velvet match kinda sucked, she’s plateaued right now match and story wise. The visual pin wasn’t earned, at not point was there any real sense that Velvet was a threat, nor did Velvet come off particularly good or strong. And then they need to decide if Jade is face or heel. Is she getting her comeuppance? Then she can’t keep having her kid with her. Is she the next Hulk Hogan, wrestling like a heel but acting like she’s a face?

Darby is a masochist. Joe is a sadist. This wasn’t their most violent match but it was still a lot of crazy shit. Joe got busted open hardway when Darby dove into the table he was holding up, the leg caught him right above the eye. And that was a fun 5 weeks, but now it’s back to the hoss fights.

  8. Well, that was a lot of fun.

Strap a rocket to Billie Starkz. Let her be the Action Andretti to Jade Cargill.

I legit bought into the idea that The Workhorsemen were going to pull a minor upset over Silver and Reynolds. JD Drake is the fucking best. He's a top notch southern style brawler and also a great base/catcher. I would build my theoretical promotion around a guy like Drake.

Rush beating the shit out of Pillman was good stuff. That family at ringside had no idea what they were in for.

Athena is the fucking best and deserves better than her current position but I'm also kind of okay with her having the freedom to just be a goofball and then just maul people in the ring. Yuka's music sounds like Dance Dance Revolution. Once Billie Starkz is working full-time, she and Skye Blue have to become a tag team and pull a shocking upset to win the inaugural AEW women's tag team belts.

Having Smart Mark as the mouthpiece for plain yogurt with abs and Ari Daivari is a good idea. Dante really does defy gravity, but he needs to realize that he can lay in his forearms and punches a little more snug all the time, not just when BCC are laying them in. Not sure how Darius (with the schwa sound Riccobani-style) got busted open.

I want much more of the Outrunners. I DEMAND an Outrunners-Workhorsemen tag. Anyway, Menard's reactions to the whole match really made it.

Speaking of Action Andretti, I'm not saying Blake Christian deserves Action Andretti's push...oh wait, maybe I am. Claudio is so great, and I may have to track down Cesaro-Big Show.

Time to go watch the Billie Starkz-DMD match since I'm fucking iced into my hotel in Abilene for like 3 days and also on my fourth beer.

TK: "That Deathvalleydriver board is a wonderful place.... except for that Gregg guy."

    • I caught the last few seconds of Yuta vs Hangman, and that was a very Punkshot level Death Rider.
    • Felt just a little bad for Taylor since Danhausen was way more over than he was. This was fun, with the best part being Sonjay's sell of the Orange Punch, but I hope they spend a few weeks with it at least as there are a bunch more matches I want to see out of the pairing. I thought Satnam did a good job selling the rope drapings. He's making progress. A fake golden globe as a weapon is such 1990 Memphis bullshit.
    • I struggle to see what a good payoff for Hobbs would be. You'd think maybe the guy to beat Darby but he just had a TNT title feud where he ate the fall. You don't want him beating Cassidy, though on some level, for him to be the guy to wrestle all of the international wrestlers would be interesting at least. Different. Maybe a Page feud? But then who wins? Maybe a Mox feud? That'd be good even if he didn't win. He'd just have to hold his own.
    • Main event was excellent. Crowd stayed in it even through the long bits of heat. A lot of that was on Hayter showing fire but then getting cut down. During the break, Excalibur got confused and called Mei "Mei Saint-Michel" for some reason even though they're clearly (clearly) different people. Emi gets so into things that part of me wasn't sure she'd have the ability to modulate the act for this setting, but past a few "I am your highness"es when she was going for the moonsault, she had the slider 2/3rds the way to full seriousness (which as good as the Shida match from last year was, wasn't something she did then). I'd almost be sad to see her used in a setting other than Elevation since she's such a beloved part of that show. It's like taking Eigen or Okuma out of the Baba comedy six mans. Emi Elevation tags are weekly bits of comfort and joy, but she both deserves more spotlight and can absolutely deliver and contribute.
    • Bring on Swerve vs Dustin! I could be wrong, because Swerve's offense is pretty goofy, but I just have a feeling Dustin would be the best babyface possible and Swerve the most vile heel and it'd be a great match.

All my exposure to Emi was loving her through Dark/Elevation along with just knowing her history, so last night was fucking wild and amazing. I don't know how she can go back to being the beloved Queen Emi of YouTube, who heats up the mid-card women on their way to title match squashes.

    That's why we hired you!

Too funny, too true. Have I mentioned that the reason I started watching AEW was because a TV writer and wrestling fan (and DVDVR lurker/possible poster) I followed in Twitter (Owen Ellickson) retweeted a tweet that confirmed the rumor that Tony Khan had been a long-time DVDVR poster?

Do you even count Hennig turn as an actual turn? The Horsemen recruiting saga that lasted for a full year made them out to be heels who were kinda faces but not really tweeners. They were suppose to be the badass Horsemen, but they were in fighting for months. Hennig came in and instantly started heeling on a babyface DDP and suppose to be this highly sought after free agent. It just makes the Four Horseman look dumb for Ric going all out to recruit a guy who will go the highest bidder and already sided as a bad guy. Maybe the only explanation is they wanted to go after another bad guy since TECHNICALLY they were suppose to be the bad guys who don't wear white hats.

IMO I think they really didn't have a handle what the Horsemen were suppose to be in the era of the NWO. Once you got past that weird gray area where the Horsemen were united and siding with team WCW, it went down this weird path where Jarrett (who Flair recruited but didn't recruit) was feuding with Mongo, Benoit, and Arn. Mongo is feuding with Jeff. Benoit is feuding with Jeff but also feuding with Mongo cause Mongo's wife is obnoxious and basically slutshaming Woman. It's Days of Our Lives: The Four Horsemen Edition. So adding in Hennig to the mix when Hennig is already basically telling Flair he will only go with who pays him the most is basically just making things worse.

I don't think Bischoff liked the Horsemen because they weren't his creation (and I know he and Flair didn't like each other), and he also didn't like that they continued to be way over with the fans no matter what dumb angles they got stuck with.

Chris Jericho/Sammy Guevara vs. Ricky Starks/Action Andretti: ****.

Darby Allin vs. Buddy Matthews (TNT Championship): ***3/4.

Bryan Danielson vs. Brian Cage: ****.

Mark Briscoe vs. Jay Lethal: ****1/4.

If those are 4 star matches then 4 star ratings are meaningless.

yeah, we are certainly the exact same demographic, as my experience mirrors yours. i loved all of Jericho's nicknames for people: Tony Skee-a-vone, Ron Mysterio, Quasi Juice, etc. By the time Ralphus was introduced, Jericho was among my favorite parts of Nitro.

I didn't watch Fall Brawl that year and that closeup of Flair's face made me actually think that maybe Flair had died (not necessarily due to the head slamming, just in general). bizarre way to open the show, that's for sure.

The only wrestling T-shirt I have ever bought was a Monday Night Jericho shirt that I don't know what happened to. I know I was always talking him up on the RSPW/-M. I loved when he did the Man of 1,004 holds and just kept alternating random things with "armbar" and then used the Dr. Seuss reference (Moss Covered Three-Handled Flying Gradunzle). And of course Ralphus.

I’m so behind on everything. I just learned about Muta’s last match. I wouldn’t have guessed that they would have went all the way back to Sting and Kabuki but it’s cool as heck that they did. I don’t know how the work rate measured up but I wouldn’t doubt that it was 5 stars in the farewell payoff department.

I wish we could get some kind of shoot or something with Muta and Sting. They wrestled each other in their 1989 feud more than they did Flair, who is the one everybody associates with their beginning. They really never quit feuding kind of like Sting and Flair. Whenever one of them showed up in the other one’s town it was to wrestle him.

Did you see this article by our own Phil Schneider?
