Personally I feel like SD! being on FOX was a huge part of WWE's recent boom period.  Money aside, they've taken a massive step back in exposure with this recent round of negotiations.  Gonna take a while for everything to shake out but I could see this hurting house shows, merch and other core business metrics, but it'll be masked by the massive rights fees.

This is something I have my eye on, too. You really can’t overestimate the impact that Smackdown being on network TV and PLE’s being available for rock bottom prices on a Peacock sub had on fueling their current business. Increasing barriers to access the programming will absolutely have a trickle down effect on those metrics you listed. Of course, collecting roughly a billion per year in TV rights fees insulates you from any significant harm, but it’ll be interesting to watch.

  2. This makes a lot more sense than the Amazon rumors from a couple weeks back. But, as noted, Netflix’s ability to consistently pull off live broadcasts is a big question. They’ve got a year to figure it out, though.

Be interested to see if they finally kill the third hour, since the story on that has always been that it was USA’s demand. But Netflix loves engagement hours, so…

LB Gage Goldberg (left) has committed to Colorado.

What’s funny/sad is that I vividly remember the night this happened, and the Raw thread was absolutely savage about this poor kid’s physique.

  4. South Alabama will be promoting offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to HC. Exactly what I figured would happen. He’s popular with the team, and as we’ve seen at the other jobs affected by Saban’s retirement, changing coaching staffs is a death wish right now. Promoting Major should preserve most of what’s expected to be a pretty good roster next season.

Major was kind of a dud at Houston in his first go-round as the head man, so we’ll see what he’s learned since then.

Whats funny is I’ve had some inklings that he might be on his way out at South, and now fate has handed him the big chair.

  5. I watched Monsiour Spade and Night Country back to back. I enjoyed both, and it was actually kinda wild how both of them had virtually the exact same episode structure. I wouldn’t have guessed beforehand that Spade would end on the far more disturbing murder tableau of the two, though.

  6. The trickle down from Saban’s retirement has been brutal. And yet another clear example of why there need to be significant reforms in how the transfer portal works. Through no fault of their own, poor San Jose State and South Alabama now have to endure 30 days of open season on their roster, yet they’re not allowed to be active in the portal to help themselves until it re-opens after spring ball.

I don’t have any inside info on this, but a name I might keep an eye on for DeBoer’s staff is South Alabama HC Kane Wommack. They were on staff together at Indiana, and Kane knows the lay of the land down here really well. Has a lot of the recruiting connections that DeBoer will need.

  8. DeBoer’s lack of experience in the SEC/south is concerning, but Saban had no experience prior to LSU, nor Urban prior to Florida, etc. There are successful counterpoints to enormous flops like Harsin at Auburn.

The bigger concern is his lack of recruiting profile. Washington currently has what would be a bottom quarter recruiting class in the B1G. Granted this may be a bit of sour grapes, but lots of UW people think DeBoer is getting out prior to the roster collapsing after all the Petersen/Lake-era guys have cycled out. That is not going to cut it in the SEC shark tank. And that’s not necessarily something that can be amended by simply hiring a bunch of killers for assistants. An elite recruiting culture starts at the top, and if that’s not in DeBoer, then that’s not what DeBoer-Bama is going to be.

  9. Somewhat significant development this morning:

Doesn’t necessarily mean he’s been offered or taken the job, but would indicate that he’s in the mix and definitely DOES NOT want to potentially be put on the spot about the Bama job right now.

Lanning is probably the one guy I don't want to see them hire. I think the dude is a legitimate good coach and is one meaningful season away from being viewed that way.

I also don't see the allure of leaving Oregon for him. He's building a recruiting machine there, and I think Oregon will do well in the Big Ten overall as they're probably in the top 3-4 or higher in that conference just by joining.

Lanning is a super promising coach. He knows what it takes to compete at the Bama/UGA level because of his experiences at those places, and he would be an absolute dog on the recruiting trail, which is a must for whoever gets hired.

But we are evaluating him based on a very small sample size as an HC. And within that sample…what exactly are his greatest accomplishments on the field? 0 championships. 1-4 record against his rivals, including losing a get-back game against Washington this year, which great coaches almost never lose.

That said, the only no-brainer, slam dunk, this-party-will-never-end candidate is Kirby, and he ain’t answering the phone. So any other choice is going to have a mix of pro’s and con’s and hinge on accurately weighing that decisional balance. So I don’t hate taking a swing on potential here. If Lanning hits, you’ve got you’re guy for the next decade+.
