  1. I feel like WWE realized quickly that while Sasha Banks had great presence and could cut a solid brief promo she did not have big show opening monologue talents (TBF most don't). For whatever reason AEW seems to have unlearned this and like... I know there are some people who have a real hate on for Mone, I think she's one of the best american women wrestlers out there atm but I don't think you can book her to just talking like this for another month before letting her wrestle.

  2. The Creeds are both awesome and really need to be pulled aside before they end up hurting someone bad. I don't think it is so much disregard for their opponents as it is youthful naivety, but there is a point in many of their matches where they try something that would be perfect if this was all real but generally isn't done as you aren't legit trying to kill your opponents. I assume they'll get it at some point, I just hope they figure it out before something eventually goes wrong.

  3. I recall reading discussion somewhere about how many modern wrestler themes, particularly in WWE land, are basically designed just to pavlovianly train the audience to chant or whoa or whatnot on command, Mone's theme is the most that ever. Thought it was a better moment than promo but these big intro/welcome back promos often suffer from being a bit rote (see: CM Punk's WWE one).

Will is a much more confident promo right off the bat than I expected.

It's a bit mean to say... but can you imagine signing Okada just to put the ROH or NJ Strong title on him?

  4. Given that Miro was one of the people rumored to have asked for his release/been approached by WWE and seemingly turned down... how can I put this: you have the legal right to make him stick around but you can't really force him to care or try if he doesn't want to. One can argue whether he should or not but ultimately if he's only there because he is made to (again because he signed a contract of his own free will) there's really nothing to prevent him from slow playing things the rest of his time there. Even in WWE, where this happened a lot to people we were generally sympathetic to, things generally hit a point where if the wrestlers still wanted out they decided it was no longer worth the effort and just let them go and... well if the rumors are true this has been going on for about 18 months now, if it's not getting better by now it likely ain't gonna.

Please tell me the GM mode is back (and hopefully expanded). It's likely the only reason I'd buy this year's game.

I watched one of those pre-release streamer vids where one of the New Legacy Inc fellows interviewed the guy in charge of GM mode for like a half hour, the mode seemed to have a bunch of stuff added and tweaked but I'm not familiar enough with said mode to know for sure how significant it was. You can make trades now if that helps?

  6. I think the issue is less that there is no backstory with Will and Fletcher and more that Fletcher is just a guy in AEW who shows up on occasion to lose so it kinda limits things narratively. Granted I could see why with Ospreay's first signed singles TV match you just want a showcase for him and that doesn't really require an opponent with much of a pulse, but in a perfect world I'd rather they heat Fletcher up a bit and take advantage of their shared history and have his TV debut against someone else. It's also a minor thing and I don't mind that much.

I am not looking forward to Danielson wrestling a guy who throws elbows to the back of the head and is liable to be goaded into a show-offy stiffness affair, that match feels like it should have someone to reign things in for safety sake and neither of those men are it.

  7. Yeah John Tenta online at least was fairly open about his battle with cancer and was on good terms with the Wrestlecrap folks, I think he even wrote the foreword for their book. I'd say most longtime internet wrestling fans knew of his cancer diagnosis at least a couple of years before he passed.

Now juxtapose that with Muhammad Hassan where WWE when the pressure got 1/10th as hot, they bailed IMMEDIATELY. Killed off the character and was never mentioned again.

I think the network they were on (UPN?) put their foot down and more or less banned him from their airwaves, if that didn't happen I kinda think Vince woulda stuck by him for a while longer no matter how ill advised it would have been.

“Unfulfilled actor” maybe? I’ve always been under the impression Cody would have preferred to have his career be “actor” than “pro wrestler” and he really only embraced the wrestling business after his attempts to “make it in Hollywood” did not pan out.

Yeah, and Rock and Roman are failed football players, Cena might have been a failed bodybuilder, Hulk was a failed bassist for Metallica, I don't think this really matters all that much 🙂

AEWTV which pretty clearly has a consistent internal logic/presentation along with the required discpline with booking and ring work.

I am in week six or seven of "does anyone involved with the Acclaimed or the Bang Bang Gang even remember why they even considered teaming up?" so... I will respectfully disagree 🙂

Also touching on what someone else said, I don't think we need a flood of matches that end in a few minutes via shenanigans... but a sharp uptick in 4-5 minute matches where the much higher in the hierarchy guy takes 80+% of the match as opposed to the now typical 55/45 split? That I will sign up for.

  11. Based on the past few pages of discussion I'm gonna write something I truly believe that is probably gonna baffle some people here:

I don't think the value of a good wrestling match for the simple sake of having a good match has ever been lower. It is probably the most common thing going in wrestling across the entire industry, you load up an indie show and likely most of the card is aiming for just that, even WWE has more of it than they have at arguably any other time (handwaves at the SD 6 era) and... I just don't care that much any more about them. TBF this is magnified by so many matches, even stylistically different ones, being paced rather similarly. Double it again when so many of these matches have obvious winners. This doesn't mean I'm not intrigued by a randomly thrown together match if there is something inherently intriguing about it or of the quality is simply outstanding, but to grab a random name that was mentioned a page back I'll for example start caring about Bryan Keith when I'm given a reason beyond "he wrestles a good match before losing" (for those who just wanted to see Malakai finally in a singles match again that I fully understand and agree with).

Maybe it's a matter of personal preference, but I'm not sure I need to know why Bronson Reed and say, Giovanni Vinci are having a match.

It's funny this is the example you went with as Vinci has been in one of the sneaky best TV wrestling feuds of the current year that started off via a fluke accident/injury but was booked into a full on hate-filled feud. Most interesting stuff he's been involved in his whole run, that's what booking (and actually stopping matches due to head injuries) will get you 🙂

I think Becky vs Rhea is a good money match. I wish they went with Bianca vs Rhea at Mania like the kinda teased after the last post Mania Raw.

I think it likely came down to both Bianca and Rhea are likely gonna be around for a bit while Becky could call it a career sooner than one would expect (has probably made decent money and has a small kid).

Loved the show overall but man, I wish Liv won the Chamber.

I don't think Becky & Rhea is going to be that good in ring. Becky's been looking a little robotic recently. Very much looks like she is thinking about her next spot.

I mean... you saw all of Liv's title reign, right? Maybe the year off has done her well but she's never shown to be able to work a top shelf singles match, much less a featured WM title one.

So AEW got the top 2 weekly shows, best ppv, most charismatic, best technical, best brawler, best flyer, best non-wrestler, best announcer, most improved, best gimmick, featured/signed the best overall, and the promotion of the year is... WWE?

AEW's booking has been rough for a while now and took a notable downswing they are just starting to recover from when they added Collision, so they won a lot of the awards that are in-ring focused but lost the others.

Or to put it another way, they made us sit through that Devil shit so if they only lose a few awards over it they got off light ;P

  16. TBF with athletes, at least in team sports there are dozens of teams/managers/owners you could in theory play for and most will end up on several teams over the course of their career so it is very different than wrestling for much of its recent history where WWE was really the only major league there was. This means the athletes get wined and dined more early on and likely continue on at the highest level of the sport after being dropped (unless they are out period) which I think lends them to better feelings towards themselves and feeling less indebted to one super figure.

  17. I saw someone somewhere note how in the backstage bit from the presser Rock and Roman were in lockstep but Rock was the one clearly the one taking the lead... which would sorta imply that in the grand scheme of things Roman is to the Rock what Jey Uso was to him. If Rock is willing to play heel for a bit and you do want to start laying the pieces for a Roman face turn... that's a very intriguing bit to have in play.
