But that's the whole point. The world may be a gruesome place that wants to harm them, but getting into an echo chamber only makes that same thing happen more and more.

Part of being able to make the world less of a gruesome place that wants to harm people is to show people who would disagree with you that you're human too, and you don't deserve to be harmed for who you are, and hopefully showing that person that you, and everyone like you, are good people as well.

By contrast, going into an echo chamber just means that not only will you not change anyone else's minds that you're a good person who doesn't deserve to be harmed, but it'll do the exact opposite, and eventually convince YOU that anyone else who disagrees with you is a bad person who DOES deserve to be harmed.

Cycle it back to my television example, I control the remote.  Is it an echo chamber because I do not want to watch the local news from 4-6:30 PM?  I don't want to watch the Kardashians?  No, I control my time.  The Internet does not control me.  Is my television usage any different from the Internet?  You can say my television usage is an echo chamber.

In terms of interacting with people of diverse opinions.  Look at here.  How much do we argue about pushes and getting wins back.  What gimmicks are garbage and what works.

You can have it both ways.  The key is civility.

I got rid of my Facebook about three years ago, don't mind Instagram as it's just pictures (although its gone mega downhill since FB took that over) and though I use Twitter solely for work as a news feed I do find myself getting sucked into the negativity more times than not so am tempted to get rid of that too. Can anyone recommend an RSS feed as a replacement haha?

Aigh but we're here by a common bond (the greatest sport on god's green earth) and don't have to put up with peoples quirks, opinions and bullshit unless we choose to so it's an acceptable format.

It's funny you should say this. I've been ruminating on Nietzsche a lot lately, trying to make sense of my world view, and his prophetic vision of all that would happen in a Godless society seems to have come true. Filling the moral void where once was mass-religion is a chaos of cultural preferences, an overload of choice, perpetuating empty values of a herd mentality. We are surrounded by men and women who turn their back on challenging ideals with a banal and content existence, with their main concerns being the trivial and narcissistic, buying into this religion of comfortableness: a world that glorifies the mundane and shuns higher values. I honestly think the void he warned we were staring into with blinkered eyes is social media.

I already experienced this in my brief foray into online dating several years ago. Despite having an in-depth profile and many pictures, the fact I had no online presence outside of a LinkedIn profile was majorly suspect to a lot of girls haha

I just deleted my IG account.  It has gone to crap forcing people to put up stories instead of pictures.  When they went to the AMA thing, I said goodbye.

Nietzsche may be right.  The problem with all the zealots trying to push religion back on the masses is they are using religion as a cover for the racism, bigotry, and child abuse stuff (still flowing like a sheet river out of the Vatican, just look at Archbishop of Washington, Honduras and Chile for examples.)

If I can find a way to get my Lucha and NHL news from a different source, I will delete Twitter.  For me, Twitter is the site where I can get news regarding different items that I cannot get elsewhere.

How do y'all think social media works?  I choose the people I want to follow, so I don;t have to put up with their quirks, opinions and bullshit unless I choose to.  You're not assigned people you have to follow.  I block THOUSANDS of people on Twitter just to keep from being bombarded because I dare to be LGBTQIA+.  Twitter is the tenement staircase, or the backyard fence where you go and gossip about everything.  It forms a more realistic view of the world because all viewpoints are given equal footing in your timeline, so it (heh) socializes discourse.

It seems like a lot of people who have a problem with it are used to being THE voice in the room, so they try to harangue others into not using it to keep their spot.

As a LGBTQIA+ individual as well, I do the same thing.  Below is how I feel handle social media.  I wield the remote control.  Validation is not important to me.

Which is how you create the idiologicly pure echo chambers that foster one viewpoint without letting anything else in, which is the biggest part of the problem.

And that's not even getting into the constant validation part of it where you're either fishing for attention, or seeing whatever facade other people have up then wonder why you don't have it that easy.

But is it an echo chamber and how is it different from television?  My take on both television and social media is this.  I have the power of the remote control.  If I see something I don't like when I turn the television on, I change the channel.  Nobody is forcing me to watch the news, KUWTK, or any reality television.  If I turn on the television and find nothing on I turn off the television and find something else to do.  Pick up a book, play a game, go to the gym, etc.

How different is the echo chamber on social media than the echo chamber on television?  I see no difference.  I have the power of the remote control.  I will wield that power.

This has gotten beyond ridiculous. Okay, here's my deal as an e-list celebrity, I have a rarely used FB acct, my wife let's me know if there's anything important that I need to see, it's usually just a couple of friends posting pictures of their kids or their cats. I've blasted the orange shit-gibbon a time or two and no one seemed to be overly offended, though one sister-in-law pointed out that she had voted for him.

I've lived 61 years without Twitter and see no reason to change now, if you have something that all-fired important to let me know, e-mail me or pick up your cell phone, otherwise I'll happily remain blissfully ignorant of whatever it was that was so important that you had to tell the world.  My wife and I celebrate 34 years of marriage on Friday, longer than some of you have been alive, yeah, it's a big deal to us, but do I feel any need to let the world in general know? Not a bit. I gave up validation seeking in high school, and that's been quite awhile ago.

Same here, I choose what I want to share.  Nobody is forcing me to share anything.  I can share what I want and when I want.  I have control over my life not a faceless algorithm that picks things based on its stored data on me.

    --------

My newest annoyance is YouTube.  I have been fascinated with the Kilauea so I have been following it via the USGS and local news sources on YouTube.  The algorithm has recently started recommending fake news sites with BS news on the eruption.  I notice some of the fake news sites have blue verified check marks and there is no way to block these sites.  I click the button telling Google that I do not want anything from this site but Google and their algorithm keeps sending me videos from these fake news sites.

How does fake news proliferate?  Google spreads it via the algorithm.  It does not matter to Google if you don't want to watch something.  They will send it to you anyway.

  3. Now the alt right feels emboldened by their actions so they will start going after people on the left.  Then the left strikes back going after people on the right starting a sheetstorm on Twitter and social media.

Meanwhile, the people who run the bot armies are laughing all the way to the bank because they could care less what side they are on.  The color of money is the same.

However, it's fully possible to navigate and be disconnected from the bad (Social Media, Cable News, Talk Radio), and still be fully involved in the goings on of Current Events.  You can even be idiolgically crossed (I'm what *used* to be consertvitive, but is now centrist, my wife is what used to be Liberal, now very left of center but doesn't resemble what it became) and we get along fine, even going into political conversation.  The key is remaining civil, which is something lost on everyone with internet anominity and that being a troll is more entertaining than being civil.

Funny thing, back in the days of the Forum Wars, we were all trolling each other pretty hard and we were civil to each other.  We argued one day in one forum and agreed in a different forum over a separate topic.  We all got along and laughed it off in the end.

Today, once you disagree with someone there is a rush to label you, put you in a silo, and make up how you stand on various issues.

We lost civility in daily society.  Politics and the news caused a lot of problems.  We made rock stars of individuals who had no reason to be put on pedestals.

I don't disagree with you.  My advice for right now and something that I've been doing...  stay the hell off social media.

I have been deleting my accounts and happy to have hours of my daily life back.  I keep asking myself, what do I get from this site?  Am I happy being a part of this site?  Does the site increase my stress?

Right now the only thing keeping me on Twitter is luchablog and NHL news.  OUtside of that, meh.

When you peer behind the curtain enough and realize that 99% of social media is meaningless, you see things in a different light.

I understand why some are concerned about how this all unfolded but the bottom line for me is that if any of us tweeted that stuff,  dozens of tweets like that,  most of us wouldn't have been hired and/or would have been let go once it was revealed.  Film directors shouldn't be held to a lesser standard.  Unfortunately politicians are only held accountable come election time and even then..

There is the Dwight Howard stuff which has been swept under the rug.  Robert Downey Jr. living the character of Tony Stark.

Yes, there are two standards in place.  Can you pay enough to clean it up or not?

From the links I posted, you can see how easy it is to manipulate stuff like Twitter and other places.  It doesn't even cost that much.  Once you peek behind the curtain, it is a complete mess that is only getting worse.

Wasn't dude photographed with two heck of underage girls and there was talk of an affair? Did that just get swept under the rug? He's just missing a 1960s Batmobile to drive around Washington and he's the King.

There is so much dirt with Howard it is not even funny.  Yes, you are correct.  The incident was in Miami.

A lot of folks here and elsewhere were excited to see Disney buy FOX.   I wasn't one of them.   Disney now owns over 40% of the box office.  They aren't just playing judge, jury and executioner.  They are the judge, jury and executioner of all things Hollywood.  This is what people wanted.

So when do these folks go after Disney for being named after Walt Disney and everything in his background?

For the record, I think the downfall of society - or, at least, the internet - was high-speed connectivity.  At least, with dial-up, you had to be smart enough to remember your password, type it correctly, and hit enter.  High-speed internet removed the hurdles of signing on.

AOL passwords were basically a digital version of natural selection.  Who knew?

It was Net Neutrality.  The moment when everyone realized that it was more fun to bully others than to be anti-bullying.  The moment when everyone decided it was more fun to bully people by paying armies of bots to harass others in order to make themselves feel good.  Now we have companies and micro economies all built around this garbage.  They don't care if you are on the left or right.  The color of money is the same on both sides.

....or Robert Downey Jr. from playing Iron Man since he lived the character of Tony Stark.

Social media and the Internet has gotten out of control.

  11. It says a lot about our society when weak minded, easily offended individuals can go to websites like Fiverr and hire a legion of idiots who will back whatever you say up on Twitter with their bot accounts.

Social media is anything but social.  Those sites are designed like behavioural c oc ai ne to trigger you to come back again and again again.  If you are on any platform, you are nothing more than a piece of data for websites to sell to advertisers.  The websites then hide behind Section 230 to defend their abusive content.

If you want a peek behind the curtain, google 'the follower factory new york times'.  It does not matter what side of an issue you are on, every platform is a complete ishshow.

  12. The Spurs got something for a malcontent which is good.

The Raptors can try to flip him to the Lakers for some young talent which sets up the Lakers becoming a complete mess.

I am not sure how all of the egos fit in the room.  LeBron will the main guy with the Ball shetshow on one side and a malcontent Leonard on the other.  If I am Ingram or Kuzma, I ask to get traded to Toronto in the Leonard package.

Incase you were all ever wondering how behind the times a lot of wrestling fans are in Mexico - there are quite a few who think him showing up like that and arguing with Electro Shock was 100% legit & the AAA vs ELITE beef is real. Seriously.

If they are working the angle so well people actually believe it is real then mad props to everyone involved.  They are doing a great job selling the angle.

Puma has left CMLL to be an independent.

The hot indy scene in the US means money and for a lot of these guys it is a chance to cash in on a long career.  AAA got everyone exposure through Impact and Lucha Underground.  CMLL got caught without an outlet but now it looks like they are working with ROH.

Then this happened.  La Parka just shows up on his motorcycle.

Then she should learn how to work.  Being in the ring with someone and purposely bumping like that shows a lack of restraint.  He puts both himself and the people he is working with at risk if he cannot work properly.

Same goes for all the people who are botching moves, learn to work where you don't put others at risk of injury.

What was the GL botch? I don’t watch NJ but saw some gifs. Was it that stupid German suplex thing?

There has been more than one.  They did one finisher where they dropped their opponent on the back of their neck.

Here is the Son of Havoc tweet.  Looks cool but then you watch again and see how his opponent lands.

  17. Between the Golden Lovers botch, what Son of Havoc posted today, and guys not catching others in Mexico, someone is going to get killed soon on a botched spot.  Too much sloppy stuff is finding its way to Twitter and nobody is calling anyone out on it.

It is starting to bother me with all of the missed spots and guys landing on their heads or the back of their necks.

Needs to be that or play hard ball with the NCAA and get them to treat G-league like the NCAA treats Minor League baseball. Let kids play for a collage team till there season ends then go to G-Leauge. But to do this they have to go for two years before being called up to NBA team

I don't know if they need to spend two years.  Some kids may be NBA ready and should be able to play.  The key is giving kids the right kind of opportunity to play 30+ minutes a game with NBA level coaching and understanding what pro life is like for development.

I don't think that playing 10 minutes a night or sitting on the bench will develop an 18 year old as much as playing 30+ minutes a night in the G league.  Long term the kid playing 30 minutes a night has a better chance of developing then the kid riding the bench.

Something like the AAA model for baseball is good long-term for the NBA.

Woof, the Rockets turning Ariza and Mbah a Moute into MCW and (presumably) Melo seems real bad.  Maybe they have something up their sleeve, but it's hard not to think they took their shot at the king and missed.

Melo?  Yeah bad.  MCW?  Meh, they needed a backup point guard.  When Paul went down so went their chances.  I think they put up 60+ regular season wins but the Warriors now have the presence to go down low for sets which opens the floor up even more.

The biggest challenge for the Warriors right now is boredom.

Hopefully, the G-league is ready by the time the draft rule changes so kids who are not ready right away can get the minutes and coaching they need.
