  1. I gotta say the worst part about watching all these matches is listening to the commentators talk about matches that occured previously (presumably on television) that we'll most likely never get to see on video. Do I need to hear about the half hour technical masterpiece Americo Rocca & Talisman had the week before Super Astro vs Satanico? No. No, I don't.

  2. I could easily see a lot of people being disappointed by this seeing Super Astro in it and not getting all the usual Super Astro shtick. But I really liked it. Satanico was great bullying the little guy and Astro was even better at his comebacks. The leaping headbutts out of nowhere were great. Also loved when both guys were on their knees and Satanico would hit Super Astro who would just bend backwards and bounce right up with a headbutt. You don't see that spot any more these days. The blood caught me off guard but only added to the drama. The announcer kept pointing out the idea Satanico was turning the match into one right up his alley since that's the way he knew he could beat the lil' dude. Astro misses a big flying move and Satanico gets too cocky thinking he's got the match won only to be rolled up and pinned. The actual roll-up was great and the crowd knew Astro was gonna win with it as you can hear them getting excited as the refs counts. Satanico's selling post-match is fantastic. Wish vets like Satanico were still around to work with the current generation Super Astro type wrestlers and help them pull off matches like this. Will be high on my list for sure.

  3. Everyone pretty much covered it already. There's no way to top the previous year & this was way too short. It was a good match though and they certainly went a different way than their first match. The finish is one of my favorites of all-time with MS-1 taking the sick diving bump four rows deep. This will be a hard match to rank. Will definitely be at the top of the re-watch list.

  4. This is the first match I've encountered so far on the set where I could easily see it working in front of a current audience. They kept the matwork to a minimum like a lot of title matches these days and then went straight to the big moves and nearfalls. Wasn't a huge fan of that since Perro's offense got very redundant and Villano III wasn't exactly bringing it in the match. V-III even did that spot I hate where he goes up top for a big move that isn't in his repertoire just for the sake of missing it. Had this been Ultimo Guerrero people would have been throwing a fit but V-III gets a pass. Perro's sentons were brutal but he just kept doing them over and over. Double pin finish didn't help anything since it was such a cop out but then again this is the UWA so I wasn't expecting anything clean. Very disappointing considering the two wrestlers involved.

  5. I'm gonna go with Log on this one. It was a fine match but not one I'd be looking to re-watch any time soon. When I watch a Jerry Estrada match I'm looking for the big bumps & overselling but there was none of that here. He wasn't working with much as I've always thought Ultraman was utter crap and lucky to be in a trio with Solar & Super Astro who he could just hide behind & get away with doing nothing but posing most of the time. The finish was pretty realistic and totally believable but I like conclusions to matches I've invested 20+ minutes into. Would have prefered Estrada grabbing the arm and forcing him to submit rather than a doctor stoppage. Oh well. Estrada will have other chances to deliver on this set.

Not related to the match: During commentary it's mentioned that the first ever match broadcast on Galavision was just over a year before this match occured and it involved Aguila India & Jerry Estrada.

  6. I am a total mark for a blood brawl where you have blood stains on the mat and guys just covered from head to toe. It's just a shame these guys wasted two falls before getting to the fun. Herodes is a favorite of mine but he seemed kinda off his game here just repeating the same senton and bodyslam over and over while Salazar sold. Although to be fair the bodyslam came into play later on when Salazar rolled him up and the crowd erupted at the huge nearfall. The third fall was awesome with both guys juicing heavily and Salazar making sure to cover both hands in blood so every time he punched Herodes it would leave a nice visual. Finish was one of those cheap ones I can do without and it was a little disappointing the video cut off before we could hear the huge pop for Salazar getting the win by DQ but such is life. A great third fall mixed with two very skippable falls probably means this winds up somewhere in the middle for me. Probably bumped up a bit due to the blood.

Not that it matters to most folks but when Cubsfan & I were in Mexico this past year we gave this match to Tony Salazar himself and his son said he remembers it fondly & Herodes was one of his favorite opponents to ever work with. He was shocked to find someone actually had video of the match.

  7. I was worked up over the John Scott goal but then the world cross-corrected itself when Ted Nolan kept putting him out and Scott's bad coverage led to one goal, then a dumb penalty by him led to the 3-2 goal. Having to struggle to beat the Sabres is not exactly a pleasant start to the post X-Mas schedule. Hopefully they can run over the Canes on Sunday in preparation for the outdoor game.

  8. Fantastic match. Any fool who says Lucha Libre is all about the dives and highspots needs to be smacked on the head with a VHS copy of this match and then forced to watch it 3 times in a row.

I loved the legitimate battle going on to apply every hold. Nothing was taken for granted, no move easily locked on. It was a slow match but really wasn't... if that makes any sense. They were always moving trying to escape holds or find a way to lock on the next hold. As the match progresses it becomes less about the actual moves and more just a battle to survive exhaustion. Even just getting whipped into a turnbuckle led to a dramatic nearfall. The finish was great with Cochisse going for his finishing submission and Satanico countering into an inescapable submission where Cochisse finally had to give it up. A masterpiece of a match. Definitely top 5.

  9. * - Quincey's hit on Ryan Getlaf was a nasty one and deserves a suspension.  That said, this hit is a perfect example of one you never saw 20 years ago.  Today's players all turn their backs to the play and will stop short 4 feet off the boards because they "can't be hit".  It creates horrible hits like this one.  Don Cherry ranted about this on Coach's Corner on the 14th and he's right - guys make themselves vulnerable and create situations that simply never occurred 20 years ago.

Did you see what Phaneuf did to Kevan Miller last week? Exactly the same thing and he got 2 games. There is still no logic to NHL suspensions. Then you see a guy like Tom Wilson come from 100 yards away to throw a vicious hit and he gets nothing as well. I just don't know.

I agree with Cherry's take on guys being too comfortable out there and putting themselves in bad positions. We live in a world now where if you even dare accuse the victim of being responsible for what happened you get looked down upon as some sort of knuckledragger. It's the smart play these days to actually turn your back away from the boards and protect yourself going down so you can draw a penalty. Shouldn't be that way. I think it's only going to get worse now that a lot of kids are coming up through leagues with no bodychecking.

  10. They should get rid of anyone who played for Atlanta and start over again.

There was a column written about this about a week ago. I posted the link here and our resident Jets fan blew it off as nonsense. Then yesterday I watched the Jets let the Sabres steamroll them with one goal in particular coming when Byfuglien just acted as a pylon in front of his own net.

Apparently Noel's job is safe but that team definitely needs some sort of culture change unless the goal is actually to be a .500 team until the ex-Thrashers retire.

  11. What an embarassing performance by the Leafs tonight. Typical Carlyle double standard where he benches Gardiner for a bad giveaway but keeps playing Franson & Phaneuf after multiple just as bad giveaways that luckily didn't lead to goals. This team has major problems.

  12. Just finished the first episode of 24/7. Not so exciting. Wish they'd focus more on life off the ice since we rarely see glimpses into that rather than watching the coaches talk about execution and such. Hopefully it picks up with the storyline THE MONSTER is going to be playing on Jan 1st and naturally shutting out the Leafs.

  13. The piledriver being a DQ was an Antonio Pena creation to get heat for feuds. When he was rotating weeks booking in 1990/1991 you'd have one week where his booked matches would have a DQ for a piledriver and the following week piledrivers would be perfectly acceptable when Fabuloso Blondy was doing them to Perro Aguayo.

This took a while to get going and was generally slow but it did pick up nicely at the end and ended up being quite intense. My dirty secret is I've never been a big fan of Satanico but he did his best here carrying the green guy to the point the crowd started to give a shit about what was going on. Finish was sudden and a very big letdown as most low blow finishers are which will knock it down a few notches on my final ballot.

  14. Didn't really do much for me. Was just an average undercard trios match. Felt like a big Dandy fan just wanted it on the set to have some of his earlier stuff represented. He was fine but his partners were a waste of time and it's still painful to watch them as a fan of current CMLL. Impacto was the dirt worst and was lost many times. Probably won't finish at the bottom of my list because it wasn't BAD but it was a very insignificant match I won't ever watch again so it'll be down near the bottom.

  15. If a baseball player suffers a serious possibly season ending injury and is back training with his team a few weeks later the accusations of "performance enhancing drugs" would be tossed out faster than teddy bears on Teddy Bear Toss Night.

Yet Steven Stamkos back on the ice already after breaking his leg & ready to return hopefully next month... all I hear is what a great athlete he is, how he eats right & how miraculous his recovery has been.

Last I checked - illegal drugs were used to help people recover faster, no?

  16. Reimer was hung out to dry though. Shots were like 15-2 in the first 15 minutes. He made a couple great saves. I felt bad for him getting yanked. They give Bernier way more rope even though Reimer's numbers are (were?) better.

Loved Carlyle calling the team brain dead. One could argue some of his lineups changes seem to be made by a guy who is brain dead.

  17. St. Louis should be ashamed of their effort tonight. Shoulda been at least 9-0 by the halfway mark of the 2nd period. To even get it to the point where Leafs pulled their goalie... that's just unacceptable. Blues gotta know when to step on the throat and finish it.

Saw Gallagher attack Steve Mason at the end of the game tonight. It's a double edged sword b/c one one hand it is a Flyers goalie so I'm okay with them being attacked but on the other hand he's a rat who gets away with murder. Eh... at least it was entertaining.
