  1. And he was let go shortly before "Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling" premiered, where he was a main character (though he did not voice the cartoon), which made the timing even more strange

The man who provided the voice of Jimmy Snuka had a son who went on to become WCW World Heavyweight Champion.  (Lewis Arquette - David Arquette)

I was about 9-10 years old at the time the death happened and I vaguely recall hearing about it on the news.  Sad to say, I didn't really care too much at the time.  I think the general consensus was that he wasn't charged, she was probably on drugs, and that was it.  I'm not saying that was right, but that seems to be what I remember talking about with friends or hearing the adults say.

  2.

With the exception of Daniel Bryan's run to Wrestlemania 30, I'm as invested in Bayley as I've been any wrestler including when I was watching as a kid in the pre-Hogan era.  I typically avoid NXT spoilers, but when Takeover Brooklyn was announced I wanted to get a lineup as soon as I could and when I saw Bayley was going to get the title match, I went straight to StubHub and paid so much more than I should have for a great seat on the floor.  If Bayley is going to win her first championship, I want to be right there celebrating with her, darnit.

I take that bolded part back.  Worth every penny.  I love Bayley.  I know others have referenced getting teary eyed, too, and I'll add to that saying that I teared up twice on my drive home the next day.  That's an emotional reaction to entertainment that only the very best of wrestling can give me at this age.

Two things to add about the match that I haven't seen referenced here.  1. I love the emotion of the announcers as two of them yelled out "here we go" when Bayley went for that final Bayley-to-belly.  They were into it.  2. TV missed the ref stopping Sasha from diving onto Bayley on the floor that was then followed up by Sasha diving OVER the ref onto Bayley on the floor.  They caught the tail end of it, but on tv it just looked like the ref was asking Sasha to step back when in fact he had stopped her while she was running toward the ropes.  It made that spot even more special live.

And as much as Bayley is my favorite wrestler by a wide margin it has to be said that nobody has combined the mastering of a character with the ability to enhance the storytelling with the bell-to-bell talent as much as Sasha Banks has in a long time.  She's just special.

  3. Another fun episode.

Tyler Breeze's segment last night really pointed out how fortunate NXT is to only be an hour a week.  He got over everything he needed to in like 2 minutes rather than the extended promo that would have had to have been used on Raw or Smackdown.

I liked the energy of the Baron/Joe stuff.  I thought Corbin's punches looked pretty good and was surprised to see Joe come back and dominate.  Thought for sure Corbin would just knock him down and run.  This all made me look forward to their match at Takeover.

  4. I'm glad they're making Balor/Owens a ladder match.  I'm a little tired of the typical, 2-count finisher kickout style match that is great but overplayed lately and we're going to get at least one of them at Summer Slam, so it will be refreshing to see these two work a different match.

I love Bayley.  As mentioned, her interaction with the little girl is what this is all about.  This was my favorite Bayley match so far, I felt it was put together very well and both belly-to-bayley's came from a good place and were well-executed.

I too was worried a bit last night about the reaction from the Brooklyn/smart crowd to Sasha-Bayley but in addition to Bayley's connection I also have faith in Sasha being able to generate a heel reaction.  She can do so much with her character that I think she can turn the crowd if needed.

Rest of the show was very good, again.

  5. WWE 2nd quarter financials have been released.  At June 30, they had 1.156 million paid subscribers to the Network.  While down from 1.317 million at the end of the prior quarter (right at Mania), I think that is still a pretty good number.  They originally hit 1.0 million right around the Royal Rumble, so holding and surpassing that is ok.  It could be better, but I think holding comfortably above 1.0 million in a month that really didn't have anything special is at least a good sign.

The stock is up 15% in pre-market trading as I type this.

  6.

While not the worst card I've been to top-to-bottom, I was at the Raw where Jim Ross introduced Fake Diesel and Fake Razor Ramon.  I still remember walking back to my car thinking the WWF was done.

Also on the card:  Hunter Hearst Helmsley having to redo a promo because he messed it up so badly the first time, Jerry Lawler spitting alcohol at Jake Roberts, and the "Real Double J" introduction (not in person, though).

Are you sure about the last two items?  I was there also, and I don't think those were at the same card.

I only remember the Real Double J stuff because I could see the announcer's monitors from my seat.  I don't recall anything being mentioned about him at the arena.  As far as the alcohol bit, this is from the history of WWE...I don't remember the Undertaker-Mankind match myself.  Do you?

    WWF @ Hershey, PA - Hersheypark Arena - September 23, 1996 (3,923)

    Monday Night Raw taping:

Salvatore Sincere pinned Tom Casadi (Steve Corino) with the Sincerely Yours

    Matt Hardy defeated Jason Ahrndt

The Undertaker defeated Mankind in 4 minutes with the tombstone

    9/23/96:

WWF IC Championship Title Tournament Finals: Marc Mero (w/ Sable) pinned Farooq (w/ Sunny) with the Shooting Star Press to win the vacant title at 14:50 after hitting him with Sunny's loaded purse; during the bout, Sunny was ejected from ringisde after choking Mero on the mat but returned ringside late in the match to give Farooq the weapon; after the match, Mero was congratulated in the ring by Mr. Perfect, who did commentary for the bout, and it was revealed that a brick was hidden in the purse; Pat Patterson was the referee for the contest (Sunny)

Vader pinned Henry Godwinn with the moonsault

WWF Tag Team Champions Owen Hart & Davey Boy Smith defeated Skip & Zip after Hart locked on the Sharpshooter; during the bout, ECW's Taz briefly interrupted the contest by walking around the arena floor with a sign that read "Sabu Fears Taz"

Barry Windham pinned Hunter Hearst Helmsley with the superlex after Helmsley became distracted by Mr. Perfect at ringside

9/30/96 - featured a vignette of Mankind & Paul Bearer in a graveyard preparing for Mankind's Buried Alive match against the Undertaker; included an in-ring promo by Hunter Hearst Helmsley in which he challenged Mr. Perfect to a match; featured a segment hosted by Dok Hendrix in which it was revealed the Roadie was the "Real Double J" and sang on behalf of Jeff Jarrett at the July 1995 In Your House; included a vignette of the Undertaker in the same graveyard Mankind & Bearer were at earlier, with Taker saying he would bury Mankind alive; featured the announcement Psycho Sid would face Goldust the following week:

Steve Austin pinned Jake Roberts with the Stunner at around the 10-minute mark after Jerry Lawler left the commentary table and spat alcohol in Roberts' face moments after Roberts hit the DDT on Austin; during the bout, it was announced Austin would face Savio Vega at In Your House "Buried Alive" and Ross said he had recently spoken to Bret Hart who was upset over some of the recent comments made by Austin; after the match, Austin and Lawler double teamed Roberts until Savio Vega made the save with a leather strap

  7. While not the worst card I've been to top-to-bottom, I was at the Raw where Jim Ross introduced Fake Diesel and Fake Razor Ramon.  I still remember walking back to my car thinking the WWF was done.

I was 9.  I got to reach out and touch Andre on the arm as he walked by and thought it was the greatest thing ever.

  9. A Balor title switch seems obvious for the Japan show.  Cena will be there, so he could play into it.

Watching what I saw of Raw this week made me realize that I think Emma is the most underused talent on the main roster this year.  Her work back in NXT proves that she can be more than just the typical background groupie for whatever celebrity they are using that week and I felt bad for her just standing there.

  10. There was a legends show in Waynesboro, VA October 30, 2004.  Dusty wrestled Kamala and after the match he took a bow, said some words and played to the crowd for awhile in a way that still give me chills just thinking about it.  Having grown up in Pennsylvania, it was so awesome to be in a packed Virginia high school watching Dusty be Dusty.

Dusty was the definition of a legend.

  11. I enjoyed the divas match.  Maybe it's because I was half asleep and maybe it's because the botches made me fear for the safety of the workers, but I thought it was pretty intense and was the most I ever got into a Nikki Bella match.  She's finally winning me over.  It just seemed different to me than other divas matches and other three-ways. It's one I probably won't ever watch again because I want to remember enjoying it instead of going back for a second look and picking out the mistakes.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I enjoyed the Cena/Owens match for different reasons.  It felt formulaic to me, at least at the beginning.  Sometimes I feel like fast forwarding these matches until I see each guy hit their finishers once, then I can start watching.  However, the individual performances from each guy put it over the top and I think the announcing actually was very good in this one, too.  Lawler mentioning that he had wrestled Owens gave him some legitimacy.  I liked it.

  12. I went to a bbq at my cousin's new house this weekend.  I walked back to my car midway through and saw his neighbor walking her dog, so I stopped to say hi.  She kind of had this "huh?" look on her face and took a step or two back when I started to approach her so I stopped.  I thought at first it was just because I was somebody she didn't recognize.  However, when I went back to the bbq and told my cousin about it he said, "Yeah, thanks for wearing that "I'm A Hugger" shirt."

My cousin's neighbors now think he's a weirdo.

  13. "Big Guy has the microphone, Big Guy's talkin, Steph." I like that Ryback has been showing his personality lately. Good for him. A big chunk of the midcard has developed very nicely this year.

I watched Kevin Owens' kid reaction a dozen times. So sweet and he must be so proud.

  14. Billy Corrgan was just on CNBC talking about the music industry.  I didn't catch the question itself, but one of the interviewers mentioned that Billy was involved in other projects like wrestling and Billy responded, "Thank you for mentioning that.  I just signed with TNA wrestling as an executive.  God bless."

He's already doubled their mainstream awareness!

  15. Wasn't Mitch Snow the AWA guy who did some All-Japan shots in the late-'80's and...I want to say he died some time in the past decade...?

Back when I was in high school my church youth group spent a week in Virginia, sleeping in the basements of a couple of churches in the area who were nice enough to host us.  As we pulled up to a church in Virginia Beach we saw the pastor and his youth group pulling away.  Discovered the next day that they were going to Norfolk to see wrestling.  Turns out the pastor was the brother of Mitch Snow and Mitch was on the card.  The brother told me that if we had been a little earlier and he knew I was a fan he would have taken me and that they got to meet a few wrestlers while they were there.  Mitch committed suicide (OWW says 2001 although I had thought it was before that, but not sure).

So, teenage me was that close to getting backstage at a Crockett show.  :(

  16. I don't think there's ever been a character that I went from "hate this guy" to "pretty big fan" as much as Enzo Amore.  This guy gets it.  He does so many of the little things right and seems so natural in the character.  He doesn't look like he's playing wrestler at all.  Looking forward to chanting along with him live some day.

Speaking of natural...totally agree with Zayn as best face promo.  He and Owens were both on in that opening promo.  I hope they don't add any stips to the match as I'd like to see them go straight up again.

The women's division is terrific.  I was watching last night thinking to myself that I had at least something of an investment in each of the full time women that I saw last night and then realized I didn't even see Sasha or Charlotte.  None of them are crazy divas and all of them are at least athletic. They all have or are developing interesting characters.  The division has remained strong.

    In conclusion, I love NXT.

  17. I didn't think anyone looked weak coming out of this show and that it elevated both Barrett and Neville.

Matches were all fine and stories were advanced.  Really, I thought it was a great example of the little things they can be doing with the Network from time to time.
