  1. @ReiseReise is entirely correct, I am dismayed that Goeido is a total sleaze. I hope someone gives him a nudge next time on the false start; and by "nudge,"  I mean a good ol' forearm blast.

Tochinoshin went up at the start; Myogiryu got underneath him and walked through. Tochinoshin just had nothing once Myogiryu got in there. Endo looks like he came close, but Hakuho didn't over-commit when they seperated; which is how Hakuho and Takayasu can spin away, but the Endos of the world can't get away with that.

  2. Wales continue their streak of non-bonus point wins, leaving them with just Ireland to beat next week in Cardiff. Fortunately, if they get a fifth bonus point win, they get three bonus points for winning the Grand Slam, rendering all other bonus points meaningless; by that I mean all the bonus points that England have been racking up. I like bonus points, but why the hell bother if you're going to do that?

England beat Italy, almost as comprehensively as England Women beat their Italian counterparts, and Eddie Jones muses that relegation should be a thing because that's how he rolls. Again, it's not something I disagree with, although I would do relegation on a two-yearly cycle so that everyone at least gets their five home games.

France made a game of it in the second half against the aforementioned Ireland side, but I figured I'd rather watch my local RL team beat London Skolars on youtube. Skolars did a better job of "showing the referee good pictures," which is my favourite euphemism for "playing for penalties," but the mighty North Wales Crusaders did pretty much everything else better and won. The Championship teams get added to the draw next round, and I kinda hope we get a cupcake so that next time out we can go to a Super League side. (Screw you, I can and do say "we" when I'm talking about them because I've got a season ticket. Only team I do that for.)

  3. Yeah but between Raw and PPVs, there's something like 37 hours of TV to fill between the Rumble and Mania. Throw in Smackdown and Pre-shows, and it's up to two solid days. I don't know that it's possible to space out a sensible build to a singles match with that much time for stupid shit to happen screen time to fill.

  4. May I propose an amendment to your suggestion? Those five strike-outs all need to come from the same pitcher, so that there's no incentive to waste time messing about changing pitchers every few batters.

A lot of these other rules seem like some old men yelling at clouds. Sports evolve as tactical thinking changes, as technology changes. It's the nature of the beast.  However, I do say this as someone who is totally in favour of making pitchers bat, so take whatever I say with a pinch of salt.

EDIT: I think part of it is that I don't think sports should ban tactics that "ruin" the game, as much as reward tactics that "make it better." I've put those in quotation marks because a lot of them are subjective. In the jokey example I've put up with the help of my esteemed colleague Piranesi, keeping pitchers in the game is rewarded by potentially zapping the other team's balls.

Ah, totally missed that fact. Thanks!

No worries. I just had a quick look at his records, because the top handful of Juryo wrestlers do tend to get a few bouts against the bottom handful of Maegashira wrestlers.

Never seen all 4 sanyaku so primed to kill.

Confusingly, Sanyaku means "top three ranks," with Yokozuna tacked on as an extra Rank Zero above Ozeki. I take it you mean the four lower Sanyaku? I really worry about Mitakeumi's knee. He came back for his Kachi Koshi last time out, but at what cost?

  6. Daishoho has had three Makuuchi opponents in the last two tournaments and has won two of them.

The big news - although we already knew this - is that Takakeisho was gypped out of an Ozeki promotion. Ten wins should see him go up this time, it'll be interesting to see what happens if he gets 9.

Tochinoshin is Kadoban: if he doesn't get his Kachikoshi, he's going down. Goeido is not Kadoban, after getting day 14 off last time out (a fusensho win over Hakuho,) before going in fresh to beat Takakeisho. Full disclosure, Goeido is my second least favourite wrestler, ahead of only Ichinojo.

I'll keep an eye out for Terutsuyoshi, I do like the tiny guys. I'm still hoping for Abi to add a little depth to his game, so he's not so screwed if the pushing attacks fail.

  7. She's solid, she's definitely over and I don't dislike her but there's definitely a bunch of women who I'd like to see steal her lunch money. Part of it for me is a style thing, but part of it that I'm not always convinced by some of the faces she pulls.

    Spoiler

It could just be that I like what Brian Noble called the Big Boppers, so I'm all aboard the Rhea Ripley vs. Piper Niven match they seemed to be teasing. Ripley grabbed a mic after beating Xia Brookside, said something about being the dominant female wrestler before Piper came out and basically said "Not any more." Piper went on to flatten Killer Kelly.

Speaking of big boppers, Joe Coffey vs. Trent Seven happened and it was Good. I could watch Coffey walk through chops all night, so your mileage may vary. He did bust out a bunch of things I don't think I've seen in the twenty first century, along with a sweet bow and arrow hold around the ring post.

In other news, I had to sit down when Zack Gibson called Amir Jordan and Kenny Williams "a pair of divs." His scouse accent creases me up. He's basically a seagull. Some wiseass started singing "He's got his own face on his arse" to the tune of "He's got the whole world," at James Drake during the opener, so obviously he was "Arse-face" by the end of the night.

Jordan and Williams beat Eichner and Barthel, the latter being my new favourite tag team. It was a flash roll up, of which I approve.

WALTER and Dunne had a contract signing for Mania Weekend. I could have rewrote WALTER's promo in five words: "Peter, I accept your challenge." No violence, which was refreshing. Night one had the Dunne & WALTER vs. Coffey Brothers match.

Damned if I could tell you what order any of this happened in.

Oh, and both Noam Dar and Mark Andrews were stretchered out during a match. I don't know for sure, but Dar looked properly hurt. He didn't get back to his feet after a reverse 'rana, so I'm guessing a leg problem, but I don't know for sure. I've never seen a referee talk into his shirt mic before so I think it's legit. Andrews, I think got carried out by referees because he was selling his own leg.

  8. It was Ireland they beat so confidently, on their own patch. Far worse a sign than if they beat Scotland in such a fashion. It's looking like the only thing standing between the forces of darkness and a grand slam are Wales in Cardiff. Now, if there's one game that Wales will be up for, it's England in Cardiff but their performances so far have been nothing inspiring.

  9. I was wondering if it might be something related to the Pats having more confidence in their back-ups than Indy and Denver, and not having to feel like they've got to rush their #1 guy if he's not 100%; but I had a look at some numbers, see if I could support that. Manning's back-ups actually threw more passes in games that he started than Brady's back-ups threw in games that he started; although year on year, Manning had more years where he threw all of his teams passes than Brady; although some of those have to do with trick plays. In short, it's a feeling I've got, but not one I've got any numbers to support apart from the Matt Cassell year.

  10. Gutted for Takakeisho. I have a feeling if there were only 2 current Ozeki, they would have given him the spot; which supports my stance that Goeido needs to be launched into the sun. I can't explain it. I find Takayasu's surliness endearing, but Goeido rubs me the wrong way. At any rate, if Takakeisho gets 10 next time up, and they don't give him the nod, I'm probably going to give up on this stupid sport for another five years.

Congratulations to Mitakeumi on his Shunkun-sho. Hopefully he hasn't knackered his knee too much to get it. I presume that's to make up for the fact he's not going to be a Sekiwake next time out. Technically, they can promote him and have three Sekiwake, but I doubt they will, if they won't promote Takakeisho to Ozeki despite getting 33 wins over three tournaments.

Hokutofuji was the only person Maegashira 1-5 with a Kachikoshi. He surely will go up to Komisubi and join Mitakeumi.

  11. Takayasu looked hurt on Day 9. I hope it's nothing serious. Goeido just looks bad, by which I mean he doesn't look obviously hurt; but I could just watch that guy lose forever. Are we going to get three Kadoban Ozeki in March? I kinda hope so because I like chaos, but I also like Takayasu, so I hope he pulls through. At least getting one, and possibly a second with Goeido.

I also don't particularly like watching Ichinojo. He's the very model of crushing inevitability when he gets a belt grip, but if he comes up against any kind of pushing or thrusting attack, he just looks so lost.

Oh yeah, Hakuho is still pretty good.

  12. As long as they take Kisenosato as their role model and not Kotomitsuki, they should be fine. Have they really decided to run Takakeisho vs. Mitakeumi on Day 4? I'd have thought they'd save that a few more days.

It's a shame to see Kisenosato go, but he clearly hasn't been there for a while now.

Is Hakuho human, or a sumo wrestling robot? It feels like he could just wrestle in Tokyo and rack up at least two yusho per year for another five years. When he's healthy, he's unstoppable. Still.
