  1. I'm still a couple weeks behind on watching this but wanted to post some thoughts.  This show is killing people off & introducing new characters like crazy.  I'm having trouble seeing how this show will go past one season unless it resolves the original storyline & moves on to others.  But the whole premise of Ruiz being involved with El Paso is mainly due to the one case.  To me the original case has gotten kind of muddled as it's been overtaken by the drama w/ Tate & Ruiz's family but I guess they have tied them together as all one thing.  I'm still completely enthralled with this show but once Tate gets his come-uppance, the main storyline is kind of done.  I'm quite interested in how the whole tunnel storyline goes but the MILF character has gotten kind of muddled.  When she was first introduced it was portrayed as she wanted nothing to do with anything illegal, now she's killing people with no remorse?  Also interested in where the Matthew Lillard storyline goes although I guess the meat of his connection to things has been kind of removed.  I have virtually no interest in the storyline with Linder & the Mexican women.

Edit: IMDB is reporting a 13 ep. season with it returning in 2014

  2. Did Koff take responsibility for anything?  I read another interview from him where he tried to blame most of the problems on users' internet connections.  He refused to throw GFL under the bus (understandable to maintain professionalism) but seemed resigned to the fact that sometimes it will work & sometimes it won't.  If that's the mindset of management, they may as well give up on iPPV.

The saddest thing about ROH & really all US wrestling now is all companies are pretty much slotted where they are with no hopes of any movement no matter what they do.  ROH could double business all across the board & still be in the exact same spot they are in, although it would be easier to cover the bills I guess.  TNA, same thing.  WWE's business could be cut in half, same thing.

  3. I thought the new female did well along with Beck and Mike O'Brien, the rest were largely invisible or openly bad (that big haired guy that did the comedian bit on WU).  I liked Used Cars, the porn girls sketch, and Drunk Uncle was the highlight.  I didn't think the opening sketch was that bad, it had it's moments.  I'm so out of touch w/ pop culture I had to go online to see who the guy was that got the huge pop.  I'm also completely unfamiliar with Arcade Fire.  Are they popular?  What is it about their random oddness or the creepy big heads or is that exactly what their appeal is that it is so random and "creative"?  I thought Cecily Strong did a good job on the news, glad she's being rewarded with a higher profile but sad we won't see the drunk girl at the party character anymore.  There wasn't a whole lot "newsworthy" over the summer to make fun of I guess so this was kind of a lackluster show.  I'm in fear of how much of a trainwreck the Miley Cyrus episode next week will be.

  4. I keep anything that can't be easily replaced like fancams I shot myself or TV comps I put together myself but usually I try to sell off the VHS tapes as I convert them.  I'm kind of tired of lugging the Rubbermaid box to random indy shows I go to but on occassion someone will buy 1-5 of them at $1 a pop & sometimes I want to hug them.  If the box gets full & I need to add more to it, I'll find the "weakest link" and toss anything that's unlikely to sell (Japanese) or anything that doesn't look good or that's been in the box a really long time.  If I run across something with substandard VQ I'll usually trash it anyway.  Over the years I've MAYBE decreased my collection by 1/4 to 1/3 by getting rid of stuff as I convert.  Still have hundreds though with no end in sight.  Movies I'll normally give to Goodwill as I replace with DVDs.

If I could figure out a way to make a living at it, I could probably spend the rest of my life "converting things".  Converting VHS to DVD, converting DVD ISO files to digital back-up, my latest project of converting my 100s of CDs to digital, scanning & saving old family photos & wrestling photos to digital (I got a gimmick a couple Christmases ago that you put the negatives in & supposedly hit a button to copy it to the computer but I've never once hooked it up).

Maybe we need to start a "yard sale" thread for people to trade or get rid of stuff they have converted/no longer want?

  5. Watched Promised Land this weekend.  I'm a big Matt Damon mark.  Good performance by him and good storytelling in the movie itself.  It was pretty compelling throughout.  Not something you would ever need to see more than once.  The story did get you to wonder what was true & not true & the morality behind the whole thing as it played like they were trying to get people to take money in exchange for possibly risking the health of their families & the future of their land.  But it didn't play as "dark" as that subject matter so that was good.

  6. I gave Arsenio a try last night. I had heard it was a carbon copy of his previous show from the 80s. Took me a minute to find it as it isn't on Fox anymore, it's on CW. I was disappointed they had new music & new graphics instead of the iconic Arsenio signature graphic. I don't think this show is going to last that long. The monologue & segments therein were LAME and the blue curtain set looked really low budget. Arsenio himself still has a lot of presence & charisma but the content just wasn't there. Granted some of the disconnect could be due to me not getting "Black humor" but it seems like the genre has passed him by. I think late night has evolved these days to where you have to be a bit edgy & the nostalgia thing just isn't gonna fly as I didn't get the sense that Arsenio was bringing anything new to the table. I didn't stick around for any of the interviews, which were usually pretty engaging in the old days. But I think most people have to be hooked by the host to watch these shows rather than just watch for the guests.

  7. Watched some more of the Florida.  This Mad Max was most definitely no one I had ever seen before, certainly not the Link.  He was much ticker, with like a Ted Arcidi type look.  I had no idea Hayes was booking it, I was trying to figure out the Freebirds timeline & just kind of assumed that maybe he stopped thru the area for a few weeks around Christmas.  Off the top of my head, this would be before AWA for them?  When did the ill-fated WWF run come in?  I guess I need to go research some Freebirds.  I'm also really liking this babyface Dutch Mantel run.

  8. Watching some December 1984 Florida and had a few questions.

Anyone know who Mad Max was?  I did a google search & found some 10 year old posts on either WC or KM but no one seemed to know other than it wasn't Eli.  This was a short powerlifter dude who after a week or so started wearing face paint.  He was teamed with King Cobra who was George Weingeroff with a bleach job (as opposed to the Black King Cobra from Memphis).

Also there was a segment where The Saint, Krushchev & Neidhart went to a local gym & found a powerlifter named Jeff McGruder who did a squash match where he was totally without a clue & stiffed some poor jobber who was attempting to carry things.  Any idea if this guy had any training at all or was he in & gone within weeks?

Regarding Jay Youngblood, he was horribly out of shape by this point and I see that he lived another 9 months after this.  For anyone with insider knowledge at the time, what were the thoughts on him at the time?  Were his drug issues well known?  Did any promotion attempt to help the dude or they just let him go from promotion to promotion as he self-destructed?  Seems like a really rapid descent from spring of 83 which had to be his career peak to toiling in FL midcard a year & half later with his brother around to babysit.

  9. I watched this week's TV.  Nothing blow away but some more good wrestling.  That Providence taping looked pretty kick ass.

Opener with Taven vs. Brian Fury was quite the mess.  There was a lot going on outside the ring & a lot of what they did in the ring seemed too reckless, spotty, and/or fruitily embellished.  I appreciate a highspot oriented match but this seemed a bit much.  Fury probably should continue to be used.

Anderson vs. ACH was pretty good.  ACH is really an attention-grabber, he should be pushed harder.  I'm more into him as a singles than a tag (never have cared too much for Thomas & his contrived style).  Good match but nothing too spectacular.  One point I did want to question is Anderson's finish.  Either he's using a different finish in ROH than New Japan or the ROH commentators don't know what to call it.  Yes the move is an Ace crusher but if that same move is known worldwide as his "gun stun", it should be called that.  **1/4

Mark Briscoe vs. Adam Cole started pretty slow but picked up & the last 5 minutes or so were rocking.  Mark did a good job selling as if he was coming back from a concussion but the whole timeframe of it, his getting clearance & being added to the tourney sounded like typical pro-wrestling announcer hype and most likely doesn't line up with what was going on website wise during the time of the tourney starting.  Good match though that accomplished its purpose. **1/4

  10. Briscoes had their offer pulled due to Jay's twitter rant.  As for Davey/Eddie, they were working for ROH after their contracts expired but finished up at the last show.  I guess if they don't get a deal soon they could be back.  From what I've read Edwards was impressive at the tryout.  I don't think ROH has acknowledged in kayfabe or otherwise that they may be gone.

  11. Finally watched those Meltzer youtube videos and had a few comments/questions.

    1) He doesn't have nearly as much stuff as I would have expected/hoped.  Although he always seemed like a collector of knowledge, info & footage moreso than collectibles but yeah I expected his place to look more like an episode of "Hoarders".

    2) What is the context of these videos?  Who shot them and why?

    3) All the stuff in the shed for sure and the garage (if it's not climate controlled) he's risking it losing its value and/or usefulness if he leaves it there.  I guess plastic storage boxes are better than cardboard boxes though.

    4) Sounds like in theory he's open to someone converting his VHS for him.  I'd be curious though if more than 10% of it isn't readily available on disc already but that 10% could be quite the find.  Has anyone ever offered or at least pressed him on what all he has?  It seems as far as footage & magazines go, he kind of arrogantly states that he has "everything" from like decades but is probably disconnected enough from the collectors' subculture that I'd be curious what he truly does own vs. what was truly available.

  12. Watched the latest ROH TV and man they are on a roll lately.  I skipped the opening match which was 4 locals in a match to determine who will fight Matt Taven next week.  I like that idea (mainly since guys in VA deserve a look and Baltimore is close) but the formula may get pretty predictable after a while unless they use it to bring a guy in & have him beat Taven to get noticed.  Tag with C&C vs. Party Boyz had a few rough spots but was a fun match.  Party Boyz most likely work cheap since they are ROH trainees so I wouldn't mind seeing them work other indies to get experience.  Alexander is going to be the bomb in a year or so, they really should work on moving him to singles & dump the annoying Coleman.  Inside ROH was largely a waste & rehash aside from the clip of Wolves winning tag belts & acknowledgement that they had lost them already.  Proof that they can go back & edit something into a show even though the audio wasn't levelated very well.  Main event was SHOCKINGLY good.  Lethal has been on a roll in the past few months and this was the best I've seen of Dutt in years.  He was actually motivated for once & did a lot of cool, innovative stuff without looking like he was just trying to be cute or adding pointless fruity embellishments to stuff.  Real good match with lots of nearfalls and both looked like a million bucks. *** match, the 3rd straight episode from that taping with a match this good.

One annoying thing on this show was the camera work.  Granted some of it may be that I was watching it on the SD feed, but they had several times where the camera zoomed in for unnecessary closeups & times where moves were missed by the camera crew.

  13. Got this idea from a friend on another board but it speaks to the sentiments above of Delirious' booking being lazy or uninspired.

"Call it uninspired if you want to...I think that given what ROH fans want out of ROH, I think they have a relatively low interest in intricate, well planned, storylines. I think if you throw in a handful then the fans will be happy. It's not like we're talking about PWG or DGUSA where storylines are virtually nonexistant..."

I'm afraid there is a big shortage of bookers even out there for companies to hire.  I think it's just a sign of the times, pretty much every company is eternally slotted in the slot they are already in.  Even if a lot of companies double their current business they are still pretty much in the same slot they have always been in, from local little indies all the way up to TNA.

  14. This Outlaws as invaders gimmick was discussed to death yesterday on another board I frequent.  It has since come out that that wasn't the intention at all.  Seems lots of people latched on to one sentence in a review of the show that everyone must have read.  Supposedly the intention was that they were going to take over the tag division and oppose what corporate ROH stands for, basically saying they are rebels.  Supposedly this has been misinterpreted as an invasion angle.  I can't point you to anything ROH has released stating such but that's what's now being reported.  I think I saw reference to that confusing line being edited out of the promo as it appears on the VOD or something.

  15. Got Ashton Shepherd's new "This is America" CD which is self-released.  To me the disc is kind of a mixed bag.  I appreciate the artistic talent here but stylistically I would have preferred more up-tempo songs.  Some of the slower ballad types are on the first half of the disc so that kind of puts in your mind that this is SOO nothing special before you get to some of the stronger material on the 2nd half.  "Drinkin Cap" and a duet with Daryle Singletary covering George & Tammy's "Golden Ring" are probably the highlights of the disc.  So overall I'd probably give this like a C.  If you are a big Ashton fan then certainly pick it up but don't expect to enjoy this better than either of her first 2 CDs, unless you are into ballads.

  16. A friend of mine traded with some dude in I think Arizona.  He included some comp tape that had random outtakes or bloopers on it including something like "guys' ball falls out during a sunset flip".  Anyway there was Arizona indy wrestilng on there, and we are talking like mid-late 90s.  There was some guy doing a time traveler gimmick or something that cut rambling horrible promos & there was a match with him from I think a baseball field that I seem to remember was a tag match with one guy in it that was a former name (forget who).  It was soooo horribly bad that my friend wrote him back & said if you ever send me any of this again, don't include any of the Time Traveler stuff.  Turns out that was him.  Good times!

  17. A friend told me about The Bridge so I watched the first episode last night. I'll probably continue to watch. It's kind of dry but very intriguing story or woven stories. Totally didn't realize the woman was supposed to have Asberger's (read that on another board), that probably would have been best spelled out in the first episode by her boss or something. But I guess he's kind of a rube so just thinks she's special or odd which is how it came across. She seemed eerily unattached so now it makes sense. I've never watched an FX show before and have some catching up on OnDemand first before I need to go figure out when this actually airs.
