  1. I thought this week's show was fine.  There seemed to be more creativity & thinking outside the box than usual so that was good.  Some of it worked--the CEO baby sketch (though that was more the acting than the material), the sampling of 80s music sketch, the subway dancers.  Some didn't--the man on the street interviewing bugs, for example.  But this is very much a transitional year.  I'm starting to see SNL more for what it is a "slightly amusing diversion" than anything uproariously funny or anything.

  2. When I was more heavily following modern wrestling I used to make a ranked list nearly every year of my 5-10 favorites to watch. Since I'm more heavily connected & following music these days I thought I'd make a list. As a first list it is what it is, but it will be interesting to compare in future years.

Factors here include not only the quality of the music itself but how much of an emotional connection I feel to the artist, whether it's having met them in the past or wishing to meet them. Also factoring in is how willing I am to spend money to go to their shows & how willing to travel I would be and how many times I'd like to see them live.

    1-Sunny Sweeney
    2-Eric Church
    3-Miranda Lambert
    4-Jaida Dreyer
    5-Reckless Kelly
    6-Sonia Leigh
    7-Dierks Bentley
    8-Luke Bryan
    9-Matt Mason
    10-Kacey Musgraves

So that's where my musical tastes lie at the moment, with a clear emphasis on who is "top of mind" for me currently as opposed to having a cache built up.  Hopefully this will get some people to check out some artists they might not be familiar with and we can compare notes.

  3. I didn't think the show was "bad", missable for sure.  I agree with the highlights listed above.  I also liked the Keenan thing on the news.  For some reason for years now it seems the most creative stuff is not done in front of the studio audience.

  4. Sure I'm nitpicking but ROH expects us to believe that this guy who just cut a "down and out" promo talking about not getting paid at his wrestling job in months went out & bought this really nice title belt?  So now he's recklessly irresponsible with money on top of his other redneck qualities?  And if we are to believe that ROH paid for the belt then we are also supposed to buy that he is an "unrecognized" champion?  Or that they paid all this money for a belt for a storyline where the goal is to get rid of said belt they paid all this $ for?

  5. The longer this campaign has gone on, the more I hate everyone.  I also hate that we got like 10+ phone calls yesterday, there were 6 in the 2 hours after I got home.  I'm very tempted to not vote at all for Gov as the choices suck.  I'm choosing the guy who I agree with some things he says even though other things he says are batshit crazy.  The other 2 guys just totally have stances I can't get behind.  The Gov race has totally dominated here, I know very little about the candidates in the other 2 races to the point I'm voting for one guy based on one article I read & know nothing about his opponent.  The AG race I'm not voting at all and honestly can't name who the Dem is.

I'm actually most curious how the meals tax issue comes out.  I honestly don't care how it turns out as I'm mainly just happy they put it up for popular vote as 6 months or so ago there was a big uproar that it was going to be forced upon us.

  6. I don't think anyone is outright cheering for TNA to fold above all else. I think everyone would like to see it get better, but everyone has its doubts that it wll, even with an ownership change. Either Bischoff will buy it and it's the same old shit or someone else buys it and puts Bischoff in charge (because hey, he ran a wrestling company before, right?) and it's the same old shit.

Why can't someone take a chance on someone new, or relatively new?

Who is there though?  Anyone who theoretically knows the business well enough is also smart enough to know to stay away.  It's only glory hounds who can't find anything else to do like Bischoff that end up in positions like that.

It would be very intriguing if it ends up being Shane McMahon though.

  7. I'm slow to the party here but here are a few thoughts.

Does anyone expect anything other than

    a) someone buys it & it's just another money mark replacing the old money mark & the same people or new people continue to run the promotion in obscurity

b ) WWE buys it just to continue to control the universe

    c) it simply just goes out of business

While I tend to agree with the person a few pages back who said it wouldn't be a bad idea to rebrand it & change as much as possible to distance it from TNA, then I have to ask what the point of buying it would be?  Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the timeslot from Spike and just open up a separate/new group?  Why buy the company for anything other than the TV slots if you are going to change it to the point of not acknowleging history?

I don't know, and I largely don't care since I don't really have time to follow current wrestling but I do know that TNA going down & not having a distant #2 where people can theoretically make money in the business will be very bad & just another nail in the coffin of an extremely slow dying business.

  8. You know who deserves more recognition in country music?  Chris Young.  I've never been a "fan" of his really & not really sure I'd go out and buy any of his music (maybe a Greatest Hits) but he's had a fair amount of commercial success in recent years but doesn't seem to get nominated for awards & such.  So just saying that he probably should.  Yes he's kind of a "mid-card" act but I think he deserves a little more credit than he's gotten.

  9. As if I didn't think Eric Church was already a god among men, he has released a new single. Very much sounds like he's looking to mobilize his fanbase into some type of revolution with this new one. And for those who didn't think Eric was rocking enough, he continues to rock this new one, more testosterone infused, high energy music! Check it out on iTunes & amazon. I will be downloading it tonight.

  10. Who else is tired of the social drinking songs?  Country music should have drinking songs about loneliness and drinking your sorrows away.  Nowadays it seems there are way too many social drinking/party songs and lots are completely interchangeable content wise.

  11. So I missed the best part FFing over the music?  And you're telling me those living room sketches are always based around someone misspeaking?  Lame.  I guess I hadn't noticed or forgotten since thankfully they don't do them that often but Killam's performance totally saved that one.

  12. I never said I wanted to hear Bryan talking history, just that it's pretty glaring that not only is it something he's ignorant to but doesn't seem to show much interest in learning.  He seems interested in the current NJ talk but seems to let Dave talk about history without asking questions as if he's trying to learn something about it.

From what I've heard of the Dave & Mike shows, they are MUCH preferable to anything with Bryan.  Does anyone look at Bryan as anything more than entertaining & opinionated personality who had enough foresight to start the website & figure out how to run podcasts?  I've never heard anyone that looks to him for the news or hard analysis.  I don't know that anyone would notice if he stopped doing his newsletter.

  13. Dylan, wondering your reasoning behind Austin not making your list?

So I listened to part 2 and wanted to throw some names out.  Still not sure if I want to make a top 50 myself but I'm considering it.

Names I'm glad were acknowledged & discussed even though not on lists: Arn, Race, Pillman

Names I'm shocked didn't make either list: DiBiase, Toyota

Names I'd personally heavily consider for a list: Hase, Silver King, Otani, Kanemoto, Masato Tanaka, Ultimo Dragon, Dean Malenko, Great Sasuke, Chris Daniels, AJ Styles, Kaz Hayashi, Bestia Salvaje

I guess you can tell that I rank junior heavy/moves based stuff pretty high.

  14. I've only listened to part 1 so far.  I was surprised to hear Greg Valentine's name.  He was a guy I could never get into.  I always kind of thought he was "important" based on his reputation etc. but honestly never cared too much for him myself.  I guess he never showed too much personality & moved so slow.

I can't imagine doing a list like this myself though.  I had no problem comparing current workers & ranking them back when I was watching enough current stuff to do it but ranking historical people over the course of time is much harder.  It would be tough to focus just on work vs. drawing power/reputation/personality/importance in the business etc. and also eliminate personal biases.  But all that said, I fully plan to revisit this thread with a handful of people (probably mostly joshi girls) I would want to add to the discussion once I finish part 2.

  15. That was a completely missable show. I enjoyed the opening govt shutdown/Gravity movie sketch, and a couple of the pre-tapes (24 hour energy and Guys Dance Party) but everything else in studio was completely missable.  I found it a bit odd that the show was so heavily Vanessa Bayer this week since she's not normally in everything.  Found it a bit amusing that she used the exact Jewish Boy voice as Lady Gaga.  Taran Killem was killing it in the living room sketch, saving a rather annoying sketch.  He's hit the right balance of being just over the top enough to be awesome & not too over the top to be annoying like Will Ferrell was.

  16. http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/sunnysweeney

I think I mentioned this before but it seems like unless you are a big star, you have a big label behind you & they push the hell out of you on radio, it's getting tougher & tougher to make it in music these days. Artists are now taking it the "do-it-yourself" route. The above link is to contribute to the making of my favorite artist Sunny Sweeney's new album. It's very disheartening to see how much of a struggle this fund raising campaign has been and I don't think it's been promoted very well so I'm doing my part. When you are on a national radio show every morning (over the air in NY; online otherwise) and have thousands of social media followers, it's just sad that she & her team have convinced less than 300 people to be committed enough to back this project. The Pledge Music campaign was set up for 60 days, didn't get funded, they rolled it over for another 60 days, and we are roughly 1/2 way into it and the #s have moved less than 5% in 30 days. Something ain't right here. If you want to support a true country artist, please give her a listen & throw some support behind this CD. It's already been recorded they just need funding to release & promote the thing.

  17. I guess a football game ran late so my DVR didn't get the last 30 minutes of the show but I thought this was a better ep than last week.

I did have one question, the take on Bachman as a sex pot sketch, I took it as the humor in that is that she's ultra-conservative and this was taking it to the extreme in the opposite direction.  The reason I ask is our newspaper had an entertainment blurb about it this morning & I'm thinking the humor was totally lost on the writer because it was written as if Cyrus was portraying a known fact about Bachman. Or maybe I'm just oblivious to some scandal or some not-so-public rep Bachman has.
