  1. What were folks thoughts on the season premiere?  It seems to be polarizing from what I've read online with most people focusing on the Hillary stuff & the Pope stuff.

I thought it was funnier than most of the episodes last season though the back half of the show was kind of flat.  In recent years I give props to them for creativity even if something isn't all that humorous.  I'm thinking that's the thought of producers too as they seem to like Kyle Mooney.  I've never found much of his stuff funny at all but he's creative & "outside the box" that's for sure.  I'm sure I'm not their target audience anyway.

  2. So the son, who now we know really was his son despite looking nothing like either parent... the last few times we saw him he seemed to have no concern for his dad.  Last night when Ray went to say good bye to him, the kid seemed more confused than anything.  For all I knew he was using the shield as collateral in his checkers game.  For someone who would have theoretically had this connection to Ray from all the voice mails, he certainly didn't seem to care and was totally detached the last few times we saw them together.  I'm wondering if the email account these messages were going to were either really Ray's dad or just some dummy account the kid didn't even know about.

I'll share more thoughts later on other items that I still have to question.  Ultimately I'm not as negative on the show as most as I did find it compelling enough to keep watching but I'm still not sure what I thought of the whole thing.  There were so many side characters & storylines that in hindsight, I seem totally spot on as far as no one could have known what was important to pay attention to & keep straight & what wasn't.

  3. I agree with the sentiments here that in many ways the show is a mess with all the plotlines & subplots.  1-2 shows in I was on the fence thinking I'd stick with it seeing if they gave me a reason to care.  Aside from the cliffhanger of thinking Ray was dead, after 5 episodes I still wasn't 100% sure I was "bought in" but figured I'd see it thru with only 3 shows left.  Ep. 6 & 7 have really engaged me, as mentioned above, largely to see how these characters get out of the mess they have found themselves in.  There's just been so much backstory & side baggage stories on these characters that it's been a bit hard to keep straight exactly what are the important things to follow & which are just unnecessary sideplots.  I pay pretty close attention & I've lost track of some of the side characters on the corruption side of things & how they tie into each other.  So yeah I think the writing could have done better to focus the story more around what was important.  It's like from week to week I'm not sure which parts are just going to fall by the wayside & if the plot lines will become relevant again.

Anyway it's not like I dislike the show at all, but I certainly agree that the mystery they are trying to solve really is far down the list of what's compelling about this show.

  4. I was at a Confederate Railroad concert on Friday and witnessed one of those situations where you feel SO embarrassed for someone.  There was an early 20s, I’m assuming local, guy that opened for them.  From the little I heard I think he just did covers of popular current country songs but was selling a CD.  Anyway they had apparently arranged for him to join them on stage for a Waylon Jennings cover during their set.  Rather than enter from the side he just walked up to the front of the stage from the crowd & jumped on stage, looking totally impromptu to the audience.  One of the guitar players had to point him to where he was supposed to be.  He went over behind a mic & started shooting selfie video of himself.  This continued for at least a minute or 2.  He tried to sing along but appeared more interested in marking out & filming himself.  He was supposed to join in on a chorus & SANG THE WRONG SONG.  The lead singer, as nicely as he possibly could, kind of stopped & pointed out that he was singing the wrong song, that they had a discussion earlier where he said that he only knew one Waylon song, but that wasn’t the one they were planning to sing.  They told him this & he said he would go learn the proper song before show time.  All the while this dude is still filming himself at arm’s length.  So CRR realized they weren’t getting thru to this kid so started doing the song the kid knew.  He finally did put the phone away & sing as he was supposed to.  They were extremely tolerant of his actions including mugging behind him for his filming and even encouraged him on the way out.  But man, this was embarrassing.

  5. The Braves front office is starting to worry me.  They spent the bulk of spring training trying to convince people they aren't in rebuilding mode.  They start the season with a shocking 5-1 first week.  After coming back down to earth the past few days now rumor has it that they are going into panic mode.  Rumors of them pursuing Josh Hamilton and looking to overhaul the outfield again that they just spent the winter trying to cobble together.  It's kind of hard to get any consistency going the first few weeks of a season with the off days etc. and they have fielded 9 different lineups so far too.  I figured it would be a long season but I thought the front office would at least show more stability.

  6. I kind of felt this before the Kimbrel trade but as a Braves fan for 30+ years I really feel kind of in limbo a bit on my fandom at this point. I can 100% see what they are trying to do from a business perspective. And I completely understand that they can't fess up publicly that they are in rebuilding mode either for business reasons. But when a team only returns 6 guys on a roster from one year to the next I can't help but feel like they kind of turned their back on the fanbase by getting rid of so many guys. On one hand I have no desire to follow a team that appears to be in for nothing but struggles for the next 2 years but on the other hand, most of the frustrations of the past 2 years were due to underperforming. Now there are zero expectations for this team to live up to. They are painting this as if clubhouse camraderie and teamwork will overcome the lack of name talent, but a lack of talent will eventually be their downfall I feel. Part of me really wishes I could be as invested this year as I typically am but part of me is looking forward to spending time on other things.

  7. As if country music's treatment of women wasn't already a problem, now they apparently can't even stick together.  A totally innocuous, fun song celebrating being female is being knocked for being anti-feminist.  What happened to being able to write and sing what you damn well please without facing criticism?  No wonder music is becoming so homogenized & pasturized if something like this is considered controversial.  Ridiculous.

  8. I thought this week's show was pretty rough.  We didn't even bother with the last 30 minutes.  It seemed like all the sketches were like scrap heap/post-1230 stuff even from the start.  The writing always seems to run thin when they have shows back-to-back weeks.  I didn't think Simmons really was a "leading man" type either.

  9. Heyward's going into a contract year and so is Justin Upton.  I think they were trying to deal one or the other.

The Braves probably need to burn it down but probably won't really.  Unless they are able to find a sucker to take BJ's bad contract and a decent player in exchange for another bad contract, I don't think they are realistically going to be extremely active throughout the off season.  2015 is largely a lost cause for them anyway, it's the following 2 seasons surrounding the stadium move that they are focusing on.

Re: LaStella, it was pretty amazing to see how quickly the Braves changed their tune on him.  In May it was "let's dump Uggla and usher in the LaStella, 2b of the future, era because he has to put up better numbers".  Just like 2-3 months later it was like "ok the LaStella era is over, let's get him out of here for Gosselin/Peraza".  Ignoring that even though he cooled off as the season went on he still batted like 30+ points better than the best anyone could have possibly hoped out of Uggla.

  10. I guess I'm in the minority.  I thought this show was a home run, like the best top-to-bottom episode in several seasons.  I can't recall any sketch or skit that I didn't think had it's funny moments, except for Weekend Update.  It was largely a disaster this week, flubbed lines, failure of the guest, etc.  I still like Che & his delivery despite his screw-ups.  Yeah there were a few things in this episode that felt like a dress rehearsal, like the aforementioned marriage sketch, but I was willing to overlook the rough-around-the-edges stuff if it appeared there was some creativity & interesting ideas behind stuff.  In the past I thought too much seemed too safe or recycled.  I also appreciated the Isis/Shark Tank sketch as I think the show needs more topical stuff outside the opening & WU.

I think the live TV screw-up was that the cue-card guy was behind or something.  Leslie Jones continues to be awesome though, especially loved the Taylor Swift thing.  This was the most blatant & upfront shot-taking the show has done in YEARS.  Stuff like this I find welcome, funny and topical instead of just fabricated silliness or unfunny characters.

Really curious how Woody Harrelson does as I haven't seen him do comedy in 10+ years.

  11. I guess they are an easy target, the poster boys for "bro-country" and they are EVERYWHERE lately, I don't know how they have time to sleep.  I think Aldean, Bryan, Owen, etc. get a pass because they have recorded a variety of music even if they also have songs in the bro-country/party in my truck theme.  FGL clearly must be doing an album full of the same song/theme over & over.  The reviewer even mentions that "Dirt" is the lone exception & shows that these guys could deliver quality if they chose to.  I think everyone realizes it's a fad but how much is the fault of the label/radio song pushers and how much is the fault of a "social media" generation who just embrace whatever is the cool/popular thing at the moment as a diversion is still up for debate.

On another note, we had a recent shakeup in our country radio lineup.  The #2 country station recently got moved to another position on the dial.  This was the station that was supposed to be an alternative to the mainstream station but over the years just turned into more of the same with a slightly different playlist.  In its place on the dial is "HANK FM" which very much seems like it's like a nationally syndicated station with no local flavor/presence, but WOW is it a breath of fresh air.  Hearing a good mix of early 90s stuff with the occassional Cash/Waylon/Willie mixed in is such a welcome change to the same BS over & over the main stations were playing.  Even so after a week I think they too need to expand the playlist, as it's too heavy on Garth Brooks for example.  It's as if this station is in a time machine & is as repetitive & predictable as a station in 1992 probably was.

  12. I didn't watch the full ep this week as I'm not a big Jim Carrey fan.  But the McConaghey Lincoln bits were MONEY.

Also really liking the fact that Leslie is in the cast, she's the only one that comes across legit funny and natural as opposed to acting.

  13. I just thought Hammond's mic wasn't turned up loud enough.  They don't do the opening credits audio live each week do they?  I just assumed it wasn't mixed well & thought the audio fell as flat as the drab new graphics.  Figured maybe they were just going for the understated vibe.

  14. Lots of debate it seems among Braves fans lately.  Lots seem to feel the team needs to move away from being under such strict control of Schuerholz/Cox feeling that even with the success they had under that era that ultimately that only netted one WS win.  And they had no budget constraints under Turner that they now have under Liberty.  Thinking they can rebuild a team using the same philosophy they did then is flawed when their budget is middle of the pack.  The thought continues that since Fredi is a Cox guy, they aren't going to fire him like they need to.

Personally as closely as I follow the Braves, I admit I'm not an expert because I'm not in the business.  I was a big enough fan of the Schuerholz/Cox era that I respect that they know more than I do.  If their ideas ultimately fail that's fine but I think it's kind of arrogant as fans to turn our back on the architects of the glory years.  I don't know, it is very frustrating to be a Braves fan right now & knowing that there's really no sign that our frustrations are going to end for at least another year.  I've got 30+ years invested in this team and as many times as I wanted to give up this year & am still considering semi-switching allegiances, I just keep thinking back to the Cubs, if their fans continue to be hardcore for so many years, I can certainly make it thru a few lean years for the Braves.  Or maybe I just track down footage of the "glory years" & watch that instead of the current product.  I mean, it works for wrestling right?

  15. Weekend Update was drastically improved. Michael Che and Leslie Jones knocked it out of the park. The set & graphics change was a much needed change too in order to make a clean break from the Seth Myers era. Colin Jost was perfectly fine next to Che as well. Glad to see the return of Cecily's "girl at the party" character, one of the few recurring characters they have had in recent years that is both funny and not annoying.

  16. Rough debut episode of season 3 of Nashville last night. Reading other boards it seems pretty universal that it was one of the worst episodes they have done. Main storylines are just way too overdramatic & IF they are realistic, the characters continue to make stupid decisions & they seem to be writing things in the opposite direction of how viewers want things to go, in the name of "drama". Some of the side characters were used for comic relief rather than progressing their storyline which seemed quite unwelcome. Amazingly the most interesting & realistic storyline they have going is the one with the gay singer coming out to his wife & their struggles. One that ironically would have been a huge turn-off to me normally if it had been a focus of the show from the start. It seems the longer this series goes I'm more interested in the aesthetics & premise behind the show than any of the storylines or character development.

  17. Press release I read said Che was a writer last season & he & Jost are really close.   I liked Strong on there better than Jost but he did seem to loosen up a bit by the end.  At least they realized they needed to make some changes.

No new cast has been announced but they removed Milhiser, Wells, Pedrad & Wheelan from the site.  I would assume they announce the cast next week?

  18. Another wrinkle in this Braves/Upton thing that I have heard, and I have no idea how much fire there is to this smoke is they don't want to piss off Justin Upton.  It seems the feeling is that if they dump BJ or trade him in a firesale that it will breed ill will in Justin and he won't want to talk to them about re-signing.  Justin's deal is up after next year I think.  Given his age and that he's top 3 most consistent offensively on the team, I can see their desire to keep him.  I have trouble with this line of thinking though.  These men are professionals and unless Justin is as big a head case as his brother reportedly is, this should just be "business" to them.  They never played together before last year, why should they assume they need to be kept together going forward?  Or have ill will towards a team that wants to split them up?  Apparently this has stirred a fair amount of discussion among Braves fans on whether keeping BJ around & happy is worth it to keep Justin that way.

  19. Uggla's done, the Giants will soon realize he has nothing left.  For his sake, I hope he does turn it around.  As a Braves fan, it would have been nice if the Giants had offered us something for him even if the Braves had to pay 90% of his salary.

Edit: MLB is saying it's a AAA deal & he can opt out if he's not called up by 8/1.  The speculation around Atlanta was he had too big of an ego to go to AAA and/or didn't want to remove any doubt whether he had anything left by risking a AAA stint.
