  1. i grew up on WWF because it was, for all intents and purposes, the only game in town. i remember watching Superstars every weekend. i remember the few times i ran into non-WWF shows (these would've been later day AWA stuff) it wasn't the same and didn't have anybody as good as WWF (at least to my 7 year old eyes). i didn't even know NWA was a thing until the very late 80s, and even then we didn't get the show anyway. And then Ric Flair came to WWF and i hated him. gave me no reason to check out any other promotion.

  2. It's John Howard that Joe Rogan always bigs up his power striking even though he's yet to score a stoppage in his six UFC fights, right? I think the guys on Sherdog radio joked that if Rogan sees a jacked up black fighter, it's a must that he will hype them as huge KO threats. That fight with Means seems too high up on that card.

when he fought in the UFC the first time (2009ish?) he won a few fights with KOs. i'm sure that's where Rogan's idea of power is coming from.

  3. finally got around to watching Spectre.

long story short, i liked it but i sure didn't love it.

if you cut out the part of the film where they go to the secret Egyptian base, the villain reveals his entire master plan to Bond, Bond escapes, one shots a bunch of guards, and blows the place up, the film literally would not be missing anything. a completely tacked-on scene that i'm guessing they felt they had to have in there because it's typical "Bond". seriously, nothing important happens there whatsoever and it seemingly doesn't disrupt the villain or his plans one bit.

also, this is probably old news, but the theme song sucked. the video was decent but not spectacular, but the song is a shitty choice for a Bond film.

  4. the original Mortal Kombat movie (1995) i freaking love. it's not the greatest, but i watched it in theaters when i was a wee lad and enjoyed it immensely. All of my favorite characters were there and it was awesome.

the sequel, MK: Annihilation, was pure shite and i couldn't be bothered to watch it if you paid me.

MK: Conquest (aired on TNT after Nitro) was horrible and boring. don't think i ever finished the series, but i tried really hard.

MK: The Journey Begins (a direct-to-video animated movie) was aimed at little kids and wasn't good at all. i couldn't make it all the way through.

MK: Defenders of the Realm (animated series on USA in the mid '90s) was decent but had nothing to do with anything.

Street Fighter i hated when i was younger, but i watched it probably a decade ago and immediately realized that it was awesome in an Adam West Batman kind of way. Super underappreciated.

never watched the horrible Chun-Li solo film.

there was a mid 90s cartoon simply called 'Street Fighter' that i remember not hating.

the Street Fighter: 10 Years Later series of internet shorts was phenomenal. highly recommended if you haven't seen them.

Tekken (2009 film) i actually liked better than i expected to. it wasn't amazing, but it was a pretty good little flick.

it's sequel was not so good.

i guess you could say i'm a sucker for fighting game movies. or a glutton for punishment. or both.

  5.

    VileOne will love this:

So Jon Jones has all but confirmed that the Cormier rematch for the belt will be on 4/23.

According to Jeremy Botter, it will be at MSG unless the preliminary injunction does not got through. Therefore, the backup plan is Anaheim at the Honda Center.

I'm rooting for the Ronda Center.  Didn't Cormier say he refused to take the fight in MSG?

i was thinking the same thing, but figured Dana White just told him to deal with it.

  6. That is fantastic. I assume that is mostly ( if not all) cbr's? How many a day do you figure you averaged? I've been gearing up for a similar project, though my plan is EVERTHING DC up to Final Crisis. If I was doing Batman only though, I would have to include The Brave and the Bold and World's Finest.

it's tough to say. i'd estimate it was maybe 3-4 books a day. usually i'd read one on each break at work, but if it was a really good storyline i'd marathon a bunch of them at home that night.

and yeah, it was all CBRs. made it relatively easy that if i found i was missing an issue of a crossover that i could just torrent it and not miss a step.

i read the first 70 or so issues of World's Finest, as they were solo Batman stories, but stopped when it was a Batman/Superman team-up every issue. Brave & the Bold i plan on visiting at some point, as 70s Batman is lots of fun.

good luck with your project, that will be a HUGE undertaking. are you starting with the Golden Age stuff? That seems like it would be hell for quite a while, as most of those stories are very formulaic and would get old fast.

i think i may start the X-Men next, going from the beginning up until 2000ish. whenever the movie came out and the books changed focus. then we'll see what happens.

  7. on Friday i finished my great Batman read. took about 3 1/2 years, but i have now read every Batman comic book. Every issue of Batman, Detective Comics, and all of the spin-offs (excluding Team [justice league, outsiders] and Team-Up books [the brave & the bold]). I started with TEC #27 and went right up to the start of the New52. the only thing i skipped was Morrison's run, which i had already read twice by that point and was still ongoing. By a quick estimate, that's approximately 3100 books.

In addition to that, i followed the Teen Titans and New Teen Titans, right up into the 90s. Gotta follow Dick Grayson.

Also read the highly acclaimed Suicide Squad run by John Ostrander (which was phenomenal) which also led me to follow Secret Six (also fucking amazing). that adds another 500ish books.

it's been a hell of a journey. I've seen pulp Batman, time-travelling Batman, Intergalactic cop Batman, Superhero Batman, Batjerk, Batgod, and everything in between.

  8. was watching some '97 WCW, and they were building towards a Madusa vs. Akira Hokuto match. it made me realize that Madusa tossed the WWF Women's Title in the garbage on live tv, but then she never won the WCW Women's Title. granted, it didn't mean much, but that is really quite an oversight. she should've been the champ. and for more reasons than she was the only one that spoke English and could cut a promo.

i mean, i guess a couple of years (and operations) later she won the cruiserweight title, but that's an entire different world. missed opportunity, i say.

  9. the Kane/Lita wedding ceremony is my second favorite wrestling-related wedding (and therefore includes any wedding in any tv show ever) after Macho/Liz.

the May 19th thing was incredibly stupid. except that one of my friends was getting married that day. we used to call him from random numbers and just say "MAY NINETEENTH" and whatever else kane was doing at that time. it actually added some sort of interest to a ridiculous angle.

can't believe that Kane/Show match didn't get posted until the second page. was expecting that in the opening salvo.

  10. re: The Guest.

I liked how this movie played with your expectations and who you were rooting for.

Opening shot is of David running, so we know he's bad news. Then we meet him, and he's super nice and super polite. He helps out the little brother in a super badass way. He's cool at the party, defends the girl with the abusive boyfriend, and is completely awesome in the scene with the principal.

Then he goes off and kills Spiral and Can't hardly wait, and you're disappointed he's evil. When you find out the evil government / corporate military types are after him, you feel sympathy for him again. Then he goes off and starts killing everyone he came into contact with, and he's evil again. But he's not in control, so sympathy again? Final battle against corporate special forces guy, and you're definitely rooting for him again. Then against him again in the final girl battle with It Follows. And then, really, when he walks out in the fireman get up, you cheer.

Yeah, it devolves into silly horror movie stuff at the end with the haunted house stuff, and the Captain America super serum stuff is a bit ridiculous in the amount of punishment he takes, but it's really fun. Plays with your head in fun ways. I found Adam Wingard in Q is for Quack in the ABCs of Death (best one in the first ABCs) and loved You're Next.

Also, the soundtrack is fantastic. I guess cool 80s synth stuff Follows Maika Monroe around. "Haunted When the Minutes Drag" by Love and Rockets is on the permanent life playlist.

see, i didn't get my emotions played with. As soon as he interacts with anyone (except the mother), i knew he was hiding something and had another agenda. i really felt that he was trying to seduce the sister and that was creepy. i didn't feel bad for him when the military showed up (although the way they just destroyed the house with nonstop gunfire was a whole 'nother problem).

as the bad guy, he really did help out the younger brother in a completely awesome way tho.

i certainly didn't cheer when he came out in the fireman getup. i had the same reaction as the sister. "really?"

He's also in A Walk Among The Tombstones, and apparently has a regular role on Downton Abbey (which I don't watch).  Thought he was really good in The Guest, playing someone who's outwardly polite but is also holding their cards very close to their vest, but then saw Tombstones and I'm not sure if he has much acting range.  He's definitely got a great look, though.

i looked him up on wikipedia as i wrote that, and hadn't seen anything with him in it, but it did look like he'd been in shows that people had seen. Noticed the Beauty & the Beast bit too, which i thought was actually a good bit of casting for him.

  11. In hilarious news, Meltzer believes RIZIN offered Alberto Del Rio a quarter of a million dollars....to fight Fedor. Between that and Gabi Garcia fighting Barbarian's niece, I believe we are looking at the Japanese Affliction. Oooof.

i read once that PRIDE was in talks to have a tag team MMA match before they went under. maybe RIZIN will resurrect that idea and really confuse everyone.

Stop training with bears in Russia Nurmagomedov.  You're ruining your career.

    seconded.

  12. The number that blew my mind was that Hogan was getting 25% of the house for Nitros. Like, I'm not remotely shocked Hogan got a big signing bonus or huge money from PPV because he's Hogan and he's not stupid and that's what he does. But Jesus, he made some serious Nitro cash too when you start adding it up.

It explains a lot about those extended nWo promos that went nowhere on many a Nitro.

the one that popped out to me was that Hogan made $20,000 every time he put on an nWo shirt. no wonder they drug that angle out so long.

  13. I always supported Owen's heel turn on Bret.  Big Brother wasn't protecting you, Owen. He was keeping you in his shadow, man.   You had to step out on your own.

I don't think that Macho's turn on Hogan was justified.  That was Macho's kayfabe secret loathing, jealousy and resentment of Hogan reaching a boiling point.  The man showed his true colors and in true coward fashion, he projected all of that onto Liz rather than own up to his own feelings.

i liked this post for your support of Owen.

your lack of supporting Macho Man makes me want to take my like back, tho.

  14. i want to appreciate Mick Foley in here. He's justified most of his heel turns (pre 2000) in the ring, and it just makes sense. It always felt like he put a ton of thought into his character's actions and worked to express that to the audience.

the one that always sticks in my mind is the "i was getting beat up and you fans chanted, not for me to fight back, but for some other guy to come in" which led to his feud with Austin.
