  1. just started reading New Teen Titans again. i'm up to 1980-81 on my Batman project, so it felt like a good time to give this a go.

MY GOD. so much collectively happens in the first 10 issues or so it is amazing. All the characters (even the new ones) are amazingly fleshed out. You can tell their emotions, motivations, personalities, everything. There's been more character development in these 10 issues than the last 10 years (1970-1980) of Batman comics, and this has been the best decade for that in the Bat universe. amazing.

    edited to add:

this also makes me miss Donna Troy more than ever. Flash/Wally not so much, but he hasn't had too much of a presence yet in NTT. i'm sure that will change before too long.

  2. found out i have to work 11/2, so i guess i'll just be torrenting it the next day.  i think $30 would be the most your average person would pay.i know BWWs here played both of the Affliction events, so i'd guess they'll be showing this too.

  3. i enjoyed Court of Owls, loved the Lincoln March reveal and the world that it opens up, and i agree that DotF was disappointing, but i still feel like he writes a better than average Batman. Even Gates of Gotham was an intriguing story.  I can't really put my finger on it, but it all just seems right.  The voice, the stories, they all just seem to fit. Plus, he's got a lot of respect for Nightwing, so that helps tremendously.

As for currently, I'm holding off on Zero Year until it's complete and i can read it in one sitting, but i am already looking forward to sitting down with it.

and this weekly year-long book sounds amazing. can't wait.

  4. best possible news.

Marvel has announced that they will begin reprinting the MiracleMan series in January. They'll begin with Alan Moore's stories, and follow that up with Gaiman's, including him FINISHING HIS RUN. Also it seem the whole thing will be re-colored (about time) and re-lettered to avoid lawsuits.

Now if they just announce they'll make them ad-less i'll be super happy.

apparently they made a deal with Moore that they won't use his name promotionally at all, so that specific is not mentioned in the article, but that's what the announcement was for.

  5. yeah, i think taking WCW's biggest name talent that they could get (DDP) and using him in some bizarre stalker angle where he gets destroyed by Taker was probably not a good idea. me and my friends kept waiting for a "People's Champ" vs. "People's Champ" match in Rock vs. DDP, but we never got something along those lines.

backstage issues aside, i maintain that Bagwell could've been a main eventer (maybe not full time, but upper mid card with flashes in the main) with the proper build up, which wouldn't even take much. He always got good reactions from crowds, he was flashy, and he was at least average in the ring.

if you have DDP (nwo-era character), Booker T, and Bagwell as the main force of the WCW Invasion, you're in a much better position already. But, when your whole plan is to crush the opposition, it doesn't really matter who it is, does it?

  6.

I don't know if there has ever been a wrestling moment that I remember that differently from reality.  I remember watching it live and thinking it was the worst thing I had ever watched and that match being a huge contributing factor in the invasion not working.  I just watched an average wrestling match that probably is on par with half of the stuff on Raw these days.  It's funny how time can play tricks I guess.

yeah, i didn't really mean that as a personal attack on you or anything, i just hate that that match in particular gets built up as just an absolute stinker, and gets blamed for Bagwell being out of a job and the invasion as a whole failing.

  7. Has anyone mentioned the Buff Bagwell WWE debut?  He was in what very well be the worst Raw main event of all time and was fired immediately after.  If that isn't a lackluster debut, I don't know what else could even be considered.

"worst Raw main event of all time"? that's some superb hyperbole there. It wasn't a great match or anything, but it was perfectly serviceable.

after a quick rewatch, face Booker T gets pretty much no reaction at all, no matter what he does. heel Bagwell at least gets some boos when he does heelish stuff. i think the biggest problem is that WWF had put so much time in saying WCW was inferior, then they give the main event spot to a face who had recently attacked Steve Austin and a debuting Buff Bagwell. there was no audience connection.

  8.

I completely forgot he debuted against The Gambler, one of my favorite jobbers ever. I loved that gimmick.

I am so happy to see this match, in large part due to this show being Glacier's debut and that also being the same day I got my cat Gracie. Despite being super-old now, she's still kicking.

i was hyped to see Glacier debut, his vignettes had me excited. His first few matches were fine, but i quickly lost interest as it became more and more obvious that he, quite frankly, sucked.  I, also, loved the Gambler character and didn't see this match until years later.

    Chris Harris in NXT/WWE/ECW.

I can't remember his name, or which show it was on, but he was so fat, lazy and pathetic that that single match ended his career.

From part of the hottest tag team in 5+ years to unemployment, based on that debut match.

  9. pettis/henderson 1 remains the best 5 round fight i've ever seen. it's a damn shame the Meltz didn't mention it.

and while i may not personally agree, but rampage/hendo was considered one of the absolute best LHW title fights ever back when it happened. kinda weird to never see it mentioned anymore.

  10.

if Jones beats Glover and Gus beats whoever he gets matched up against, it makes the rematch that much more appetizing. Gives both guys plenty of time to analyze their weaknesses and better prepare for each other. i really think this is the best way to go about it.

unless one of them loses, in which case chaos ensues.

If Jones lost to Glover, it wouldn't be that bad.  Assuming Gus wins, you then book Glover vs Gus and Jones vs whoever.  Assuming Jones wins vs whoever, he then gets a title shot at either Gus or Glover, which at that point would be good either way.

that's a good point. if that situation would arise, it also gives them a chance to have another credible challenger rise up. Whether that would be a Dan Henderson or Phil Davis having an impressive showing, or even someone like Thiago Silva rising up from the middle of the pack, or even an up-and-comer who gets a big upset. It lets them build some options.

  11. in the "outside chance" category, how about setting up that fight with Mousasi again?

unless he has another fight booked or has officially dropped to middleweight. haven't heard of him lately.

  12. People who don't like the 10 point must system, jump on the 20 point must. Round winner gets 20, clear loser gets 18. If it's a 'Could have gone either way' round, 20-19 to the guy who edged it. If it's dominant like a 10-8, 20-16. If it's dominant, but not that dominant, 20-17. Much more flexible system, see?

The 10 point must system would be fine if any of the judges would ever have the balls to score a round anything but 10-9.  The 20 point must system isn't the answer if none of the judges ever score a fight anything but a 20-19.

i'd go the other way. make it a "5 point must system". Winner gets 5. Loser gets 4 if it's "could go either way", 3 if it's a clear advantage, and 2 if it's damn near stopped.

but yes, the problem with this is that the judges have to be able to effectively use it.

i've never gotten the point of a 10 point system that has never seen one person get less than 6. If a 10-2 round doesn't exist, then why have all of those points available?

  13. so i've been watching WCW Nitro every monday for the last year or so, starting from the beginning. the dates line up perfectly (monday 9/23/96 = monday 9/23/13) Anyway, over the weekend i watched WWF IYH: Mind Games, and it piqued my interest so i'm starting to watch 1996 Raws every Monday too. Today was JR reintroducing "Razor Ramon" and "Diesel" back into the WWF, and he cuts what has to be one of the best "shoot" promos ever on tv. why does Cornette get all the credit for his, when heel JR is so awesome?

also on Nitro, the nWo beats up Randy Savage and takes over the announce booth (and the rest of the show) and also introduce their new Nascar car.

oh, and there's a surprisingly good Jericho/Mike Enos match, and a swell Public Enemy/Harlem Heat tag title match. i just took a quick look but didn't see either one on youtube.

  14. i felt the main story was good for what they were intending to do. Although now i can't think of it without thinking "Flashpoint: Barry Allen fails at everything he tries to do" due to somebody posting something along those lines back when it was coming out.

Some of the minis were awesome (Frankenstein was my fave) and some were terrible. Very uneven i'd say. But they definitely helped flesh out the event and made me enjoy the whole thing a bit more.

that being said, i think the event gets more hate than it deserves due to it ending the DCU as we knew it. and rightfully so.

  15. The division would be much better off if Benavidez wins the rematch, since he's a lot more exciting of a fighter.  It's not so much that the FLW division itself is boring that people fail to realize, it's the champ is boring and as figure head for the division what your opinion of a division overall is usually based on who the champ is.

this is true. the group i watched the last event at was super excited after the Benevidez match. DJ gets an eye roll.

A title changing hands doesn't change that fact that many lower level promotions still aren't running flyweight fights at pace to produce quality talent. The hope was a few years ago that places like Shooto (and Shooto Brazil by proxy) and Tachi Palace would churn out guys to be at the top. But it turns out that many guys who had several flyweight fights already weren't that good (ex. Jussier Formiga, Urushitani). Because of that, the guys who aren't burning down the house at bantamweight are going to smash the gatekeepers to earn their way into the top ten. If Scott Jorgensen ran all over Ian McCall to earn a title shot, are you excited to see him fight Benavidez (or DJ)? A Benavidez vs. Jorgensen co-main ain't selling no PPVs if a legit headlining fight fell out. Hell, that fight might do average WEC Versus numbers on Fox Sports 1 as a main event.

this is what i was getting at, but put much more eloquently than i did.

i know the plan was to use Flyweight to expand to other areas (Asia/Mexico) but they should speed up the process. With how shallow and small (pun intended this time) the division is, it is already stale. If Johnson beats Beneviez in November (again), what do they do next?
