LOL exactly. I mentioned it last week, but this is a company where, if you've been MIA for months but TK realizes you could have a banger jobbing to a champ, he'll microwave you with one jobber win on Rampage or Collision and then you get the title match Wednesday. Meanwhile, Hologram is like 15-0 and is nowhere near contention discussion. There are no kayfabe rules for who gets a shot and who doesn't. If you told me the whole idea behind AEW is that Tony Khan as just like Dario Cueto, except substitute cocaine for rampaging bloodlust, I'd believe it.
I really wish Dario were an on air character somewhere other than MLW. Honestly I wouldn’t have minded at all if they had him in the role most assume (myself included) that Shane McMahon is gonna fill as Mox’s higher power or whatever. Dario’s rampant bloodlust would fit the BCC guys and Marina perfectly.
Just saying all this reminds me of how much I miss Lucha Underground. I love AEW but Lucha Underground was truly special in a way I don’t think another company can match.

Heck I’d rather have Cooper than Adams anyhow. I think Cooper is a great fit in Buffalo and should help them in the playoffs. The Jets still might miss the playoffs even with Adams.

Nigel wasn't a contender. His win/loss record for the previous 14 years was F 1, W 0, L 1.
Considering the fact Mox defended against both Jake Hager and The Butcher I don’t think people would’ve batted an eye at Nigel getting a shot.

The final match was a great capper to it, but I vaguely recall that the "lose and retire" run as a whole was uninspired, with short matches against midcarders, mostly fuck finishes, and Flair losing tags (where it was decided the stip didn't apply). It was very half-assed and the prevailing view is that the Michaels match saved the angle.
Yeah just looking back and seeing some of the names he beat it’s just as bad as you’re describing. From that point of view I think Bryan’s goodbye was done better because at least he had the matches with Nigel and Okada in between.

No worries. Cheers.
Thanks. I just didn’t want to seem rude. Thinking back on it they really should have made the match with Nigel for the belt too so he could’ve had at least three defenses of it.

Another example of the chase better than the reign itself with the only successful defence of the AEW World Championship wasted on fucking Jack Perry.
I'm still glad Bryan Danielson won the AEW World Championship, I just wish it happened sooner and he had an epic reign. I watched Bryan Danielson vs. Swerve Strickland from AEW All In 2024 today and it's honestly lost a little lustre with me knowing how Bryan Danielson's reign turned out and Jon Moxley was the wrong guy to get the rub.
Not to be that guy but he did successfully defend against Okada too.

Yeah, this. So now we have done the whole "next time I lose, I retire" gimmick twice in wrestling -- with two massive, legendary wrestlers -- and somehow, both times, it sucked. It feels like it should be an easy story to write. Clearly Bryan was pretty much washed when he won the title, if not before then. I guess TK wanted to give him the gold watch reign and get a big moment (and yeah, fuck booking for "moments") at Wembley, but god damn, doing that and then letting him write his own story just lead us to this. Wow. Like, if you're doing the "I'm world champ and if I lose, I retire," then it has to be a long reign. I didn't even think about it only being a month and a half until I real your post. That's just laughably bad.
I love AEW and want them to do well, but the booking of Danielson ain't it. I hope they right the ship but, as I wrote in another thread, I'm not sure "heel stable taking over attempt #2,786" is it.
Not to go to far into the other company, but I did love Ric Flairs retirement angle, and while it’s overdone now I thought he had a perfect last match including the I’m Sorry I Love You spot. Heck I also loved the callback to that at Revolution with The Bucks telling Sting they’re not sorry and they hate him before hitting the EVP trigger.

I am not stoked at all for another Mox run as champ and the whole BCC "takeover" thing is boring because it's been done sooooooo many times BUT! If they start making their way to the ring first thing Wednesday and are IMMEDIATELY swarmed by attacking AEW babyfaces and chased out of the building without a word being said until later? That would get my blood pumping. This shit should be on fucking sight.
I do think they’d need to have Orange Cassidy show more fire than usual for it to work though. Him walking to the ring all casual while Darby, Garcia, Jarrett, and whomever are swarming the BCC wouldn’t work. Otherwise I love your idea.
I also hope they do the Shane McMahon reveal soon and don’t drag it out until Full Gear. If I were booking I’d have Worlds End be the big battle between AEW and The BCC to set up whatever the title programs are for the Australia show. It would tie in to the name of the show perfectly too.

Got to wondering how many times a booker has gone with “despair” to end a big show. Not that bad guys don’t win big matches, but straight up end of Empire Strikes Back, end of The Mist, all is lost, good guys lose.
Hogan turn is one with Heenan’s “what do we do now?”. Struggling to think of a bunch of others until last night. Like Reigns won 1,000 main events as a heel but it was more “this guy is bad, but he’s just the best dude, so he won”, not “the word has ended”.
Gotta be more I’m blanking on.
The one that immediately comes to mind for me is Summerslam 2014 with Brock destroying Cena. Not that it didn’t need to happen (because it had been necessary for years), but they just made Brock look so unstoppable that night.

I haven’t seen Romper Stomper (but I’ve heard that too) - but in those Dynamite opening promos I always get the impression Mox is channeling Derek in American History X. Y’know, pre-prison sentence Derek.
That’s what I thought the answer was gonna be too. He looks like bad talks the way Derek did pre-prison.

Man I tried to watch this too last night and it didn't click either. Guess I'm just not interested in Jade Cargill or LA Knight or Jimmy Uso or Nia Jax matches.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that doesn’t get shy Nia is talked about like she’s improved so much. To me she’s still a terrible in ring performer and much like Jimmy Uso only getting a push due to her moronic relative being on the company’s board and demanding everything he can since Endeavor lets him.

Russell Crowe's character from Romper Stomper.
Does that mean that Roderick Strong is gonna have to be AEWs savior then after Mox turns on Marina? And I have to say that movie sounds even more disturbing than I’d imagined after reading the Wikipedia page.

I'm not sure I totally buy those Nielsen numbers. Having said that, AEW HAS to promote better. Both on their own tv shows and outside advertising. One of my biggest beefs with TK is that I really think he believes that everyone loves wrestling matches as much as he does, and that all they need to know is that folks are wrestling on Wednesday nights, and people will tune in, because that's how he is. I hope AEW learns from this as a company, because I think by and large the shows have been really good, and I want them to thrive long-term.
He really should have spent some of that sweet Warner money to buy ad time during the MLB Playoff games on TBS and Max. That way people would have known better that it was on Tuesday and the different time slot.
And I get we don’t get along, but your idea of him setting up developmental or buying Atlanta and using it for matches for a show on Max is one of the best I’ve read recently. It would help the younger talent immensely and I don’t see a downside (other than the cost of buying it) for Khan.

Hell I prefer AEW to WWE and I still almost forgot it was on Tuesday night. I got home from work ate dinner, and then remembered it was on about a minute before it went live. They really do need to up their advertising game.

I forgot about Wonder Woman 1984 pandemic release. Man, that film was the shits.
Oh I agree it was. I just remembered it came out at a time when it wasn’t going to generate much money regardless of its quality.
Personally I think the worst straight to HBO Max from the pandemic was definitely The Little Things. It had a good cast, but man did the story for that suck. I’d put WW84 a close second though. Especially with how good the original had been.

More people will see my question here. What's the biggest drop from the first film to the second both critically and at the box office? I've come up with:
The Exorcist and Exorcist II: The Heretic.
Thor and Thor: The Dark World.
Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984.
Joker and Joker: Folie a Deux.
Thanks.
Does Wonder Woman 84 count though since at least in the US it was released on HBO Max and during the pandemic? I don’t recall movie theatres doing much if any business. I just looked and it only opened in about 2,100 screens too which shows how far things were down for movies at the time (where as Folie A Deux had over 4,000).

I'm bummed to hear that, if only because that segment was actually pretty damn well-received in the building* despite it's sports-entertaininess (especially surprising to me considering how deep into the evening it was taped, but that segment legit woke us up a bit for Okada/Sammy).
* Full disclosure: me and four fellow drunks a row over were convinced Gunn was Chris Masters; this may have enhanced the proceedings.

Great episode this week! I saw someone say on Twitter that it felt almost like a reboot or a season premiere type episode with all the different goings on, and I have to agree. And man, I gotta say, there is probably no better use for that Turner money than locking up Garcia, and sneaking in a couple last "Final Countdown" plays. On a personal note, we have a wedding to go to this weekend so we can't watch until Sunday and I am fucking g u t t e d about it, because as a go-home show I thought this definitely achieved its goal.
If I've got one criticism, it's that I thought the thing with Penelope taking Hayter out of the four-way was just a little bit too similar to Mox and Danielson fighting their way to the back in order to set up the Yuta beatdown (which, btw, I thought was shot wonderfully, but may as well have included a "Watch Yuta Turn on Saturday Because of This Right Here" on-screen graphic. Hopefully just a really well-done red herring, but we shall see).
Okay if Billy had been Chris Masters that would’ve made it a million times better and lead to a fun trios match or two. I actually liked Masters during his NWA Power run too.

Panic? It’s not like you don’t have two other number one (or at least one other) receivers. Diggs and Dell are still better than 3/4 of the duos in the league.

So I was a bit surprised to read someone pushing for MXM to get the tag title shot especially over The Outrunners. The Outrunners are fun and hot right now, and after Collision Grand Slam I’d be okay with not seeing MXM ever again.
Now onto last nights show. I’m definitely in the camp that enjoyed JJ doing commentary. He felt like a natural to me, and added way more than Taz or Nigel do.
I also liked the trade segment with Don and Jake as at first I thought he was trading away Kyle Fletcher or Powerhouse Hobbs.
And to whomever said less shooty promos from Darby I couldn’t agree more. Like it’s great Brody King has two children, but that’s not a necessary part of his character or anything we need to know.

I think the worst thing is how much more exciting the Chiefs were at the beginning of this run, when Hill was running by everybody and Mahommes was throwing it deep all the time. He still pulls off a couple jaw dropping plays here and there, but they were way more fun in the early part of the dynasty.
That was the annoying thing last night. Worthy was wide open countless times yet Mahomes seems to think he has a noodle arm and is afraid to air it out other than the one throw that got the PI call in the fourth quarter. If Worthy was playing with Burrow or somebody like that can you imagine what his stats would look like?

I was wondering why they’d be bringing in Sami Callahan and giving him that kind of push especially with how out of shape he’s gotten (referring to Mox’s trademark that used to be the tag team name for him and Sami).

Goldberg being on Saudi shows is the best option for me because I never watch them lol so I'm hoping you;re 100% right.
I’ve only ever seen parts of them and it’s usually in the highlight packages on TV. Or I think I did watch the one with Roman vs Logan Paul, but literally only that match.

The Rock carrying that belt is just lame on so many levels.
I know it's not likely to happen but I'd love to see Sami win tonight. Have Sami be the only person who has Gunthers number would be omething.
I predicted yesterday in the Bad Blood thread and I’ll do it again here. Sami will win tonight, because it allows them to do Goldberg vs Gunther at Crown Jewel. Otherwise it’s Gunther vs Cody, and I can’t see them running Goldberg vs Gunther anywhere but Saudi Arabia (as the prince that pays for the shows loves Goldberg).

The issue with the Bills is simply they don't have any WRs. Kincaid was supposed to make up for that but he was iffy today and Knox didn't exist. That's a combination of maybe poor offseason decisions but Brady/McDermott is working with what they have. I don't like it either but blaming the coach when the WRs get zero separation and balls go off their finger tips seems kinda silly, I don't know what else they could have called on that last drive.
Almost like running your best and only receiver out of town and giving your arch nemesis a pick that turned into Xavier Worthy were both terrible decisions huh? I bet nobody could have seen that coming. That’s just another reason the idiot GM needs to be fired besides McDermott. They won’t ever win a Super Bowl with those clowns (not that my Giants will with their current leadership either).

I’ve only seen two of the three you listed, but I also feel like there’s a good reason I didn’t post in the PPV thread what my thoughts on HIAC were. I’d go with Cody vs Roman from your list, but I personally would say Sting/Darby vs The Young Bucks would be my choice based on what I’ve seen.
