I imagine if Taylor Swift decided she wanted to do the half time show, the NFL would literally throw Usher into rush hour traffic. . . . .

Didn’t they offer it to her, and she (rightfully) turned it down because it’s not a paying gig and she doesn’t need the exposure to sell more tickets? I’d swear I read that.

    AEW media call info highlights

Tony said there won't be PPV's every month

    https://www.f4wonline.com/news/aew/tony-khan-aew-media-call-jade-cargill-adam-cole-status-end-of-an-era-comments

How is this quote a denial of that?:

He said he's never said AEW will move to one PPV a month. He isn't sure what the right number is while saying there is more appetite for AEW content.

To me that says maybe they will maybe they won’t. It’s not a definitive no.

@just drew i am losing it at the Bautista bit. Just sitting here at work fucking dying. kudos, good sir. and might i mention, i look forward to your next movie.

Shouldn’t I get some of the credit for saying he acts like he’s Bautista with his unrequited love of Dana Brooke? Without that comment the gimmick doesn’t exist.

    P.S.

He has you on block. That’s why the @ didn’t link to his account properly.

That Collison Cowboy award must have been made of lead. Reminded me of one of Andrade early AEW matches where after kick out of a top rope brain buster someone jobbed to an ipad. Other than that really fun show, loved The Workhorsemen getting a bit of time. Great main event, Nice and violent, usually when WWE does these match they feel "sterile" and safe none of that here, Julia continues to impress

The thing I’m curious about is which of the Gunns gets to be the Collision Cowboy of the month for September since we should have a new one next week (unless they keep letting Juice win it monthly).

I agree with your take on the main event too. I thought they did a better job of making it violent while still seeming to fit on a wrestling show than what Mox does in his matches.

  5. So with no AEW World title defense it’s a safe bet Danielson/Sabre Jr is the main event right? I can’t see them giving Darby the spot, and considering he and Swerve are the only others from the area I’m pretty sure I named the main event.

And to go with something I mentioned in the weekly tv topic there’s five matches I’d say I’ll buy the PPV for (ranked in order of excitement):

Bryan Danielson vs Zack Sabre Jr

Christian Cage vs Darby Allin 2 out of 3 Falls

    Kris Statlander vs Julia Hart

Hangman Adam Page vs Swerve Strickland

Don Callis Family vs Kenny Omega/Chris Jericho/Kota Ibushi

The other matches I’m either not that interested in (FTR vs Aussie Open mainly) or I feel the outcome is super obvious (Eddie over Shibata, Young Bucks winning tag team money in the bank, Better Than You BayBay over The Righteous). But the five I listed are more than enough to get my $50.

Yes. Yes I am secretly A List actor and all around fantastic dude Dave Bautista. I have nothing better to do during the SAG AFTRA strike than engage with you. And making one comment in jest means I'm fixating. Also, because I know it's the question on everyone's mind; it's huge.

    Rent. Free.

Anywho, I saw somewhere above someone said that Benjamin and Ziggler wouldn't "move the needle." And that person was absolutely right. What they would do is get the people who are- or will eventually- move the needle ready. Imagine what Sammy Guevara could learn from Shelton Benjamin. TAFKA Dolph Ziggler could make everyone from Jack Perry to Hobbs look like stars. Then there's the dream matchups you could have with Mustafa Ali on the roster. He and Buddy Matthews being granted the freedom AEW's in ring style provides would be absolutely bonkers. I'd love to see him play underdog for Hobbs and Miro. Jay White is at the top of that list, too. Shit, there's 50 guys on the AEW payroll I think he could have a 20 minute banger with. Komander, PAC, Ricky Starks and/or Big Bill, et al. And this is coming from someone who sees no value in good matches for the sake of good matches. Ali makes me give a shit through his selling and his distinct babyface fire and psychology. I think he's gonna go down as a top 5 on WWE's "how the fuck did we miss on THIS guy" list. Prodigious worker. More than adequate babyface promo. Great look. Fantastic human being. Not only would I hire him, I'd put gold on him the first chance I got.

Also, I'd hire Dana Brooke. For reasons that don't concern anyone but me. Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

A List? In what world is he A List? The only former WWE talent I’d say is A List is Dwayne and that’s only based off of his paychecks not the quality of his work. I will agree that Bautista is the best actor of the former WWE performers though, and I’d rank Cena ahead of Dwayne too. I enjoyed Knock At The Cabin and thought it was carried by Big Dave.

Rent free when you’re the one that brings me up more often? Try again dipshit. And don’t try saying you don’t with your thinly veiled Little Friend comments.

How is Ali and Buddy a dream match? They’ve already performed together and at a high level in WWE. I’d enjoy watching them work each other again, but dream match should be reserved for first time ever matchups. Like Ali vs Kenny Omega maybe, or Ali vs Ricky Starks or MJF. I do think your boy could work well with Ali. Who else is in this hypothetical Top 5 performers WWE missed the boat on? I’m actually genuinely curious to see who you’d list. Personally I’d have the following as my top five (from 2000-now):

    Ali

    Matt Cardona

DDP (I don’t care about his age, there was more they could have done with him)

    Rusev

Christian (I loved him with Edge but I prefer his AEW and TNA runs overall)

Yes hire a shitty female worker for AEW they don’t already have enough of them (including one I referenced earlier when she’s having a terrible 2023 in ring wise). Why don’t you recommend Aliyah next since she’s “hot” on social media.

I deem this to be sufficiently chill. Thank you.

Wow two trolls forming an alliance while claiming to be chill. How cool.

And to stay on topic has anyone improved more than Julia Hart this year? If I were to rank the matches of Wrestle Dream that I’m excited about her match with Statlander would be in the top three for sure. Which considering the only two I’d definitely put ahead of it are Danielson/Sabre Jr and Christian vs Darby 2 out of 3 falls I think that’s high praise.

Same. For reasons I will not be getting into here.

So you bitch about people being fans of Britt Baker yet you fixate on the crappiest woman wrestler WWE has employed in years? Are you secretly Dave Bautista or something? Because that’s the only thing that would explain a fixation with Dana Brooke.

Will either of you just chill eventually?

Why are you calling me out (again) when you never comment on his crap posts? Maybe it’s time I put my favorite gimmick poster on ignore. Then again I’d miss out on all your brilliant Cody Rhodes related takes that are colder than the opinions Stephen A regurgitates on First Take.

  10. “Has anyone gotten as good as quickly as Ricky Starks?” Question posed by JR on commentary. To which I ask why is it impressive that he’s “finally” good? After eleven years he should be. If he sucked after that long he should retire.

But just for fun let’s see what other wrestlers have started from the year he did and that didn’t need over a decade to “get good”:

    Charlotte Flair

    Chad Gable

    Moose

    Tessa Blanchard

    Matt Riddle

    Ronda Rousey

    Dominik Mysterio

    Bron Breaker

Logan Paul (who’s miles ahead of Starks in every category)

    Pat McAfee

    Dragon Lee

    Jack Perry

    Will Ospreay

    Ilja Dragunov

Jay White (who like Logan Paul is miles ahead of Starks)

    Montez Ford

    Carmelo Hayes

    MJF

    Darby Allin

    Wheeler Yuta

    Grayson Waller

    Tiffany Stratton

Most of that list I’d take over the Michael Jackson wannabe in a heart beat, and I didn’t include both members of the Acclaimed.

In the interest of fairness if I were starting a promotion here’s the names from that list I’d take over Adam Cole:

    Charlotte

    Chad Gable

    Bron Breaker

    Dominik Mysterio

    Logan Paul

    Dragon Lee

    Will Ospreay

    Ilja Dragunov

    Jay White

    Montez Ford

    Carmelo Hayes

    MJF

    Darby

    Grayson Waller

    Tiffany Stratton

ABC says they're adding 10 MNF games to offset effects of the writers strike. So 2 games per week looks to be the new norm.

It’s not the new norm. The ten they’re adding are the weeks that we’re scheduled for only ESPN. So the games will just be simulcast.

In order to do what you’re suggesting the players union would have to give their approval and that’s not something you can change two weeks into the season.

So has anyone considered Jade maybe doesn't go to WWE and just stops wrestling? I recall some talk from her during her time away that she was losing interest

When every report out today states she’s headed to the PC this week I doubt it. I don’t know if she’ll sign for a long time, but I’m positive she’ll sign at least a two year deal and then maybe walk away.

I agree that Jamie Hayter has star quality, like a snugger Becky Lynch. Becks returned from her injury hiatus when she was 26/27 and Jamie is older than that now (weird!), with a couple of years of build she'd be in the top mix soon enough imo

But one is more prone to injury and doesn't have the best instincts so you could bet on the one who works safer and is more moldable at this time. I'd say they're equal in terms of promo, although Jade hasn't had to memorize a script yet, and WWE doesn't always care about match quality (see: Jax, Nia). Has Mercedes done anything mainstream worthy since being in a Star War?

How much better can Jade get? If she’s been training with Bryan Danielson even off and on for two years then I don’t see her improving much beyond where she’s at. Which to me at least is multiple levels below where Mercedes is (when she’s not out with an ankle injury). I’ll disagree on promo skill too as I don’t see how saying “bitch” repeatedly makes for a good promo. Mercedes does tend to over rely on the “boss” stuff, but she’s still a good promo around that. And I wouldn’t use Nia as a point either since Jade isn’t Dwayne’s cousin, and she won’t be given even a third of the opportunities that grants everyone.

I don’t think Mercedes has done anything mainstream since then, but last I knew (read this as I’m most likely wrong) she was still on The Mandalorian so that’s more than enough, plus her connections with Snoop Dogg are bigger than what Jade would bring.

I do like the Hayter love though. I’m with you that within the next two-three years she’ll be seen as an even bigger star than she already is. Unless TK really goofs she’s his ace for as long as he can keep her.

I don't want to jump into the debate and pick a side here, but I do think it's worth mentioning Danielson always takes Spears weird. He did against Reigns all the time too. Instead of putting his arms up in the air and opening up his midsection for solid contact, he brings his arms in like he's trying to absorb a top rope splash. Always ends with a meh looking Spear. Not as much contact or sound because of the arms taking most of the impact.

You’re not picking sides. You’re giving me a good reference point, and something I should look up on Peacock later. I remember really liking his final WWE match with Reigns, and now that you mentioned his weird style of taking spears I’ll notice that too.

So thank you for educating me, and also reminding me to watch something I enjoy.

  15. My last thought on the subject is this. If you’re TK and feel like you have money for one marquee female talent which are you paying, Mercedes or Jade?

Personally I know which one I’m choosing ten times out of ten considering both have been rumored to have attitude issues, but one has already shown she’s a mega star and headlined a show on the highest level. Plus I think you’re more likely to get mainstream media attention off of Mercedes. Match and promo quality both go in her favor too. The fact they’re both the same age helps too as it’s not like you could say one is guaranteed to have a longer career than the other.

He doesn't believe instagram is a useful metric in determining someone's popularity.  I believe it is a useful metric.

Regardless,  Jade has way more star potential than Dr. Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter.  I stand by my position that Jade will end up being a way bigger star out of the three of them.

If WWE were to get Hayter she’d be the biggest star of the group. Look at how long they pushed Paige for, and Hayter is miles better than Paige. What does Jade bring that they don’t already have in Rhea or Bianca? Both of them are also muscular women with great physiques, and unlike Jade they can cut promos without every other word being bitch.

I do think Jade will get a solid run, but people expecting she’s going to be one of the top four women while all of the following are still employed is ridiculous: Rhea, Bianca, Becky, Charlotte, Asuka, Bayley, and Tiffany Stratton (I personally don’t get her as much as some but she’s their next mega star as far as females go)

No, losing Jade is a huge loss.  I would say there's an 80% chance she becomes a huge star in WWE.  They misused the fuck out of her in AEW.  "But she was undefeated.."  Does not matter because they never mixed her up with the women in the world title scene and that was a huge mistake.  It made sense for her to operate in her own little corner of AEW for a while, she needed to improve in the ring and she has.  She's not spectacular but she's good enough now to where I can see WWE pushing her to the moon right away.

Who the heck was she gonna mix it up with that she didn’t? They didn’t want her losing to Storm or Hayter so moving her into that division wouldn’t have made sense.

Also I think you’re being a bit generous with your WWE assessment. Over time she might get that push, but not right away unless it’s on NXT. She’s not getting pushed over Iyo, Asuka, Bayley, Charlotte, and Bianca on Friday nights, and she definitely isn’t ending Rhea’s reign on Monday nights. So if they bring her in and feed her to Rhea then what? She’s just another woman on the roster at that point. Plus if her attitude doesn’t improve any she really won’t get a push. It’s easy to think you’re hot stuff in AEW when Britt is your only real competition as far as backstage politics goes, try that in WWE especially when you’re dealing with either Becky or Charlotte and you’ll find out quickly how good you had it in AEW.

You're right. Starks doesn't slap his leg enough. He should do that. And yell his name every chance he gets. And Starks' strikes aren't great, but they're miles ahead of Adam Cole's. Now that I think about it, there's nothing Cole does that isn't business exposing, so I'm not sure you've got a leg to stand on there, Little Friend. Good to hear from you.

So his posing like the worst Michael Jackson impersonator ever during his entrance to no reaction somehow equals an entire crowd chanting Adam Cole Bay Bay? I’m glad you’re showing how delusional you are once again.

Since when does Adam Cole do ground and pound or attempt a spear too? I’d love to see what you come up with for that one.

And sure enlighten us about how a guy that’s headlined more episodes of televised wrestling, and ppvs in his career than Ricky Starks ever will has exposed the business. Making you fixate on him doesn’t count either. Hell I’d wager Adam Cole has generated more money this year off of his merch than Starks has in his entire career too. But yeah nobody likes Adam Cole right?

Why don’t you get back to me when Bryan Danielson is done trying to make Starks look capable in the ring, and propping him up. Since your favorite argument is Cole gets propped up by others. What the fuck do you think Punk and now Danielson are doing? Clearly propping up dead weight that’s not a main event talent.

I'd have to go back and watch this spot but to be fair I'm pretty sure this one was actually Danielson's fault, he just stood there and didn't raise his arms and looked out of position. I thought maybe he came down hard on the injured arm during that tope spot he probably wishes he didn't do...he seemed a bit out of sorts/off his game for the rest of the match.

Excellent point about the tope spot. I’ll watch it again tomorrow too, but live it looked like he definitely landed on the right arm. I’m assuming he’s healthy though with the match they announced for next week unless they swap him for Mox between now and then.

Given that it was Danielson, you definitely want to go easy on a spear given his history and the ZSJ match coming up.  I'm ok with Ricky doing a weak one there.

Enjoyed Dark Order Shenanigans and their new gimmick.   Also Stat was two for two in carrying folks to great main events this weekend.

Let Bullet Club Gold beat up luchadors every week!  Can we bring back Juventud to be fed to Juice?

Your Juventud comment should win comment of the week. I like the idea of feeding the Juice to Juice. Anything that pushes him and Switchblade further up the card is good by me.

I forgot to mention I did enjoy the Dark Order tonight, and I also really liked seeing The Righteous pick up a much needed and big win too.

Oh and while I’m a fan of Britt’s I can’t deny your Stat comment either. She was the much better half (three quarters even) of that match, and I’m glad they kept the belt on her. I wouldn’t mind seeing her break Jade’s record.
