  1. Plus, Billie Kent.

    Billie, Billie, Billie Kent. Squeeee.

    This. Yes. So much.

I never get so wrapped up in fictional characters to the point where a scripted event upsets me (and yes, that includes wrestling angles).  But...

Billie getting killed in the speakeasy bombing

literally had me SCREAMING WITH RAGE at my TV set.  Even I was kinda shocked at my reaction.

  2. Well, fuck...

BOC were my band in the Seventies: they were funny and weird and cryptic and rocked like maniacs.  I was lucky enough to see 'em four times in a thirteen month period, post-REAPER, with their full laser show.  As much as I loved Buck Dharma (still one of my all-time guitar heroes) and Joe Bouchard (a major influence on my own feeble attempts to be a bass player), I dug Lanier because he a geeky-looking guy who still managed to be cooler than hell onstage.

  3. The Simon Pegg and Ron Jeremy autobiogs are good, light reads.  The latter manages to elicit some sympathy for a guy who, by several people's accounts, can be a major douchebag in real life.

Something less pleasant, mayhaps?  Five words: James Ellroy, MY DARK PLACES.

  4. Miscellaneous thoughts on previous msgs/threads:

    • I understand the NEWSROOM hate, I really do.  And I can honestly say the only other Sorkin-penned thingie I've seen was THE SOCIAL NETWORK.  And yet...for all the show's sitcommy slapstick and shoehorned-in rom-com moments, I will continue to put with it because the dialog is hilarious, often tack-sharp and delivered at warp speeds.  (It's the same reason I adore SUITS, btw...)
    • I'm not sure I get why a lack of humor in RAY DONOVAN is a bad thing.  It's a dark drama, people.  (Then again, I've been watching a whole lotta dark lately, mostly HBO docs like THE CHESHIRE MURDERS and THE CRASH REEL.  And BROADCHURCH.)  Having said that: yes, FBI Agent Miller's LSD freakout was enough hilarity for several seasons.
    • And on the topic of "several seasons:" earlier this week, Starz pulled the plug on MAGIC CITY.  I'm disappointed, if not heartbroken - it was a show I didn't exactly love, but certainly liked a lot - however, I think a lot of folk, INCLUDING the network, viewed it as Starz's answer to MAD MEN when it was closer in spirit to BOARDWALK EMPIRE.  Now, will somebody please cast Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a modern-day Peter Gunn?
  5. Aside from WORLD'S END, is there anything worthwhile scheduled for the August burn-off?

KICK-ASS 2 could be worth a look too.
Ah, yes, totally blanked on that 'un. Pegg/Frost and Moretz/Mintz-Plasse are both perfectly acceptable summer-enders.
  6. This was the summer in which the two super-huge/mega-hyped superhero movies (IRON MAN 3 and MAN OF STEEL)  left me, respectively, indifferent and thoroughly annoyed.  Bobby, hang up the suit until Joss bangs out the AGE OF ULTRON script.  Zach: never, EVER shoot a huge action movie in hand-held 3D again.  (Snyder may have finally worn out the good will he earned from me by not fucking up the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake.)

On the plus side, the DESPICABLE ME and RED sequels were both good, unassuming fun, and MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING is why art house theaters were invented.

Aside from WORLD'S END, is there anything worthwhile scheduled for the August burn-off?
