  1. I enjoyed Kingsman a lot.  Legit surprised so many people (and critics) didn't care for it.

Yeah, the NJ.com/Star-Ledger critic (Stephen Whitty) gave it one star and slammed it for the violence.  Frankly, I was expecting something a whole lot grosser than pastel-colored mushroom clouds.  (I think my reaction at the time was "Hmm...that's rather quaint.")

Obviously, 50 SHADES OF NON-CONSENT spanked it at the box office (pun very much intended!), but a $35 million second-place ain't too shabby, and worldwide grosses have just about earned back the shooting budget.  It certainly won't be the money-eater that the Wachoski siblings' space opera is turning out to be...

  2. KINGSMAN was a hoot 'n' a half, and I enjoyed the hell out of its complete and utter absurdities as much as I was bored to distraction by JUPITER ASCENDING's same.  Any spy spoof smart enough to cross-reference Rosa Kleb and Maxwell Smart in the same breath gets my seal of approval.

I'm also embarassed to admit I had to check IMDB to see if Sofia Boutella (who played Sam L.'s henchwoman Gazelle) was a real-life amputee/Paralympian.  Luckily, this still from STREET DANCE 2 popped up to confirm otherwise:

I believe the appropriate response is "yowzah."

  3. Yep, Boyd and Wynn covered in Wiz - and no-selling the fuck out of it - was your "HOLY SHIT!" moment of the year, so far.

It does seem, though, that the show's doing a victory lap/nostalgia tour to wrap up its run.  One episode of Dewey, Loretta and Dickie this week,

Deppity Bob and Limehouse next week

...who else is left to bring back?

At least Jacob Pitt and his dry-as-dust deadpan are getting more screentime,

  4. A music video with, not one, but TWO Michael Shannon's, is the very definition of "miscellaneous."  (LOUD WARNING: Work-unsafe due to brief gore.  And loud rock and roll.  And Michael Shannon.)

  5. Things I liked about the finale:

    1. Clara's pre-title lie about being the Doctor being echoed in the opening credits, where she temporarily gets top billing (and the eyeball closeup).
    2. The THUDERBIRDS/CAPTAIN SCARLET jokes aboard the jet.  As a lifelong Supermarionation fan, this had me shrieking with laughter.
    3. Michelle Gomez's GLORIOUS scenery chewing.  Plus her umbrella entry into the graveyard, which (along with her wardrobe in general) merely confirmed all the "Mary Poppins is a Time Lord" memes.
    4. The Easter Egg with Nick Frost as fucking SANTA CLAUS.

  6. Dislocating your thumb to get out of cuffs is the oldest trick in the book.  Coulson and co. should've seen that coming a mile away.

Made even more ironic by the fact that Adrienne Palicki did THE EXACT SAME THING this past weekend in the JOHN WICK movie.  (I notice these things.)

  7. I've heard a few times that this season has gotten better. I gave up after last season. Is Season 4 actually better than 2 and 3?

Well, there's certainly four less Brody's to loathe.  But the show's still playing like the CNN version of 24.

The singer (and the song) may be generic Euro technopop, but pay attention to the blonde dancer immediately to Sahandra's left.  Maybe you remember, about a year ago, a Finnish break dancer who gave the nerdosphere a collective boner by performing in a dance battle as Sailor Moon.  Same lady, and she also choreographed the dance moves here.

Should you need a refresher of said Sailor Mooning:

  9. I'll no doubt watch this season, albeit with the same sense of dull obligation that made me grind through the later iterations of NIP/TUCK and BURN NOTICE.  Enjoy it?  We shall see.

  10. Haven't we learned ANYTHING from this show?

The moment at least ONE character references "The Rains of Castamere," bad juju is afoot.

Jaded makeup FX gorehound though I may be (hello, George Romero! Ohai, David Cronenberg!), Oberyn's demise was pretty damn graphic even by my standards.  (On top of ORPHAN BLACK's "I just shot Marvin in the face!" moment a scant twenty-four hours earlier...)
