  1. Meltzer tried to spin it as a really strong number because the Warriors were playing on ABC.  I don't care about the rating good or bad, but I laughed because the Warriors are mediocre and aren't the huge ratings draw they once were.  Plus they got blown out in that game.  Beyond the Warriors dynasty (because he lives there) Big Dave knows next to nothing about the NBA

They are seriously running out of ways to hide Jericho. A street fight that was literally out in the street

haven't seen the match yet, but Alvarez called him New Jackicho the other day after the brawl with his music on.....I say why not?  He's been beyond stale lately, it's time for the late career Terry Funk brawler period!

I saw it compared to a WWF hardcore style match which made we want to check it out....that 99/00 division was fun, same with WCW for a bit....I wouldn't be opposed to more of that in AEW if they can do it in a violent but fun way.  Both companies, WCW especially, went too goofy with it, but they both hit the sweet spot at times

edit*  I thought he meant hide him in the ring, not because of the Hausman BS.  I thought people were over that

He's long been noted as sounding too much like Ghostface Killah, which is definitely not the worst person to either imitate or sound familiar to in hip hop. I've never listened to any of his albums. If anyone on here has a recommendation, I'd check it out and give my appraisal. I've certainly seen enough of him on Fuck, That's Delicious and he seems like a stand-up guy and a wrestling fan (ECW hats, went to see BJW in Japan).

I listened to a lot of Wu-Tang back in the day, that's why I have a hard time taking Action Bronson seriously (one reason at least).  He sounds like a straight up copy of Ghost.  For someone Hook's age I suppose it's acceptable

  4. I've always assumed it was Cole.  My problems with the angle are myriad but I wasn't exactly into the bromance angle and was looking forward to it ending.  Now?  It's gone on interminably long and dragged MJF down with it.  For someone who's a huge fan of wrestling and supposedly encyclopedic with it's history it's amazing to me that Tony put himself in this position, but here we are.  I'd love to know his mentality when he started the angle, like was it "I'll be the one to finally get the black scorpion right!"?

The bulk of MJF's reign, at least by me, will be remembered by the bad booking that handicapped him.  You can pick out a couple strong matches amongst the crap (Danielson, Omega, Jay White even though the angle kinda ruined it for me), but most of his time has been spent mired in the bromance and devil shit.  He's hit and miss with me despite all his talent, but nobody could have saved this

As far as Sasha, when I see news like that I assume her WWE return is imminent.  They're not fooling anyone.  If Sasha's been watching AEW I don't know why she'd want to go there, unless Tony is going to give her stupid money to talk in an accent and time travel

  5. I liked the triple threat but the best parts were the 3 of them in the ring or going quickly in and out.  It didn't need the extracurricular brawling and weapons that went against the format of the tournament.  You can still have the referee toss Jay White for using a chair and make it one on one, for example, make it clear that there will be some semblance of law and order.  If it's No DQ that cancels out the no run in rule, why didn't Bullet Club Gold interfere constantly?  Keep it mostly in the ring and the guys have to be more creative, probably would have been a more memorable match

The direction they were going with Mox and Eddie seemed obvious and the crowd was ok with Mox winning but personally I found it pretty deflating.  The Mox and Eddie stuff would have been hotter a couple years ago.  IMO Mox is pretty stale right now, and that's coming from a fan

Danielson was awesome all throughout the tournament.  Now he's got Okada in a week, after that the man deserves some time to heal up.  I think I liked the first match better, not sure, this was pretty great though

If someone made a list of all the times Sammy has turned (or sort of, or teased) it might be less than we think, but it is pretty funny.  Wishy-washy hothead who can't quit Jericho is basically his character now.  It's for the best though honestly, he just had a kid and the Callis Family is overcrowded and directionless as is.  I'd like to see them save the trios titles and actually treat them as important.  Callis could get those belts over.

The Devil stuff is TNA bullshit and I hate it.  The masks on the back of the ninja suit?  cringe.  It has elements of the mystery RAW GM, Black Scorpion and so much TNA.  At least the RAW GM entertained me at times.  It's dragged your top talent MJF, Joe and the world title down to where I don't care anymore.  Same thing with the women's division, between Julia Hart putting spells on people and black and white Toni I can't do it.  I want serious women's wrestling, this shit poisons the well for me to where I'm now at the point I'm skipping everything involving the women.  I can't believe how sports entertainment that whole area of the show has become in relatively short order.

When I think back to the 1st CC era of AEW TV it will be me not watching the shows live, and fast forwarding through a lot of wrestlecrap

And now we're talking about internet fans from the early 2000s as somehow representative of the casual fan. Wow. Yes I was there. This is Hyatte. I member.

    LIES!

Hyatte was 90's, MNW Scoopscentral.  His Nitro recaps were my favorite as a teenage smark, and his relevancy died with WCW.  He died later.  RIP.

  7. Awful news about Kenny.  Hopefully they caught it early, Brock got fucked up by diverticulitis for a while, it basically ended his MMA career.  I googled 'Kenny Omega diet' and it looks like he's heavy on red meat protein, that can be a cause.  I'd been thinking he hadn't looked like himself lately but figured he was just dealing with a bunch of nagging injuries like usual

I can't think of anyone good to replace him in the tag title match.  Maybe Hangman?  That feels like the best fit storyline wise even if he's got other stuff going on.  Ibushi would be the other obvious one but tbh I don't think he's a good pick based on how he's looked in the ring, that match might be a trainwreck

I think I might just have Ricky and Bill say Golden Jets earned a title match, not Jericho and whoever....do Starks and Jericho for a title shot and put Ricky over.  Beat down Jericho post-match and take him off tv for a bit.  I think most of 2023 was forgettable for him, he's been heavy on tv since the start of AEW and he needs to leave the territory and learn a new hold.  Might as well take advantage of this situation.

I've been feeling that way in regards to Jericho for a while.  He's probably been my favorite wrestler over the last 25 years, at times I was watching WWE largely just to follow him...but starting in 2005 his leaving every couple years was great for his career.  Overexposure is a problem for everyone in the big promotions now, but when you've been around as long as Jericho it's really hard to stay fresh and it's been obvious for a while that absence would make the heart grow fonder with him

  8. I wonder if a Danielson match ending up on C-show Rampage and the Blue League having a match on Dynamite tonight was part of the original plan or what.  Doesn't feel that way but they knew how many shows/matches they had to get done so who knows

I'm starting to fall behind on the tournament, haven't had time for Dynamite/Collision from this past weekend yet.  Watching 5 hours of AEW a week is a big fucking ask at this point.  I'd like to sit down and spend a couple hours re-watching all the tourny matches so far to get a better feel for any little story things guys are doing in the matches and do a loose ranking but I don't see it happening until the tourny is over.  I've liked all the matches so far but they all kind of blend together in my head as, "solid-very good, not super memorable" other than Eddie-Danielson, but again I'm behind on Danielson.  Not so great crowds on some of the shows hurts my enjoyment as well

I'm curious what the "casual AEW fan" thinks of the tournament so far, can definitely see it being hard for people to follow.  In the future I'd suggest perhaps a different time of year

  9. This feels like the least hype for a Winter is Coming show yet.  Mox-Omega and Hangman-Danielson were huge matches at the time.  I'm looking forward to Mox-Swerve but it's not even close (and I'm kinda burnt out on Moxley).  Guessing MJF would have defended the title here if he wasn't hurt.  Not sure what attendance is looking like but it was 6k in 2021 and a little under 5k last year according to wiki

  10. My impression is that the Miro and CJ stuff is his/their idea.  It's felt all along like he's kinda been booking his own stuff, like all the references to her in his promos were a way to get her hired by building it up with fans....he's supposedly been 'difficult' when it comes to jobs......I have no reason to believe they aren't totally on board with all this....

which is baffling to me.  The cuckold angle with Lashley ruined Miro in WWE.  If the idea is to play off of that but course correct it and deliver it the way it was supposed to be done (I believe I've heard both of them say in interviews that that angle would have been better if they'd been allowed to do what they wanted with it or somesuch, they blamed WWE), well, good luck with all that.

It doesn't help that they chose Andrade for it who's great in the ring but doesn't seem like he actually wants to be there.  And Jah bless CJ but she's a terrible actress, someone needs to break it to her

  11. At this point I think Rampage should be the women's show.  I bet it would do better ratings.  Have the women in angles on the other shows, do the matches on Fridays.

I'm definitely a fan of women's wrestling.  If I were going to watch WWE these days it would be to see Ripley, Bianca or the new Damage CTL.  The big women's matches at WM have generally been my favorite matches the last several years (Bianca and Sasha in particular).  AEW ain't doing it for me.  More often than not I'm fast forwarding thru the matches now, and that was never a reflexive thing for me

Toni is case in point.  I've been meaning to bring this up for a while.  I HATE Timeless Toni.  Toni Storm was my favorite female in AEW, loved everything about her going back to NXT.  Now I fucking fast forward her segments.  When you take someone I would tune in to watch and manage to produce the complete opposite result YOUR BOOKING SUCKS.  This gimmick is cringe and it doesn't work in the ring.  I liked it when she was slowly losing her mind and it was a smaller character tic, then they did the WWE thing and ran it into the fucking ground

They have talent but the division needs a complete overhaul

Once Billy Gunn became their full time partner instead of sometime manager, they became a Flanderized one-note comedy gimmick act.  They never were great but they were at least better than they are now.  They were at least interesting, say, when feuding with Sting and Darby.

They went from being CB4 to being Wacky D.

Did I mention before that I can dance?

I don't have much to add on The Acclaimed.  They got over by improving in the ring and then they leaned too much into the comedy schtick like a lot of AEW has.  I think they were feuding with Jarrett etc. in a bunch of garbage matches?  They basically became fast forward material for me.  I wasn't a fan of The Acclaimed getting the trios titles because AEW established them as workrate belts with the best of 7 and The Elite as the first champs, House of Black was fine but muddied with the House Rules stuff....now the belts are basically forgotten after being the main focus of television to kick off the year

I feel some sort of way about both Lethal and Briscoe, two people that are somewhat synonymous with ROH, both being mathematically eliminated already.  That's more of a minimal quibble as opposed to something that is taking away from my enjoyment of this as a whole because the match quality has been outstanding and like Log said above....we're getting Brody King v Danielson soon.

I'm not sure if im in the minority here, but i would not be opposed to King winning out and winning it all undefeated.

I felt watching Dynamite last night that the two ROH legends, Jay and Mark, will be 0-4 and facing each other in their last match to make that one more meaningful.  Mark faced Lethal in his first AEW match as well.  Poetic Tony Khan booking.

I was never a huge ROH fan and I'm not a fan of how Tony has interwoven it with AEW.  I feel like there's some symbolism in the old ROH guys being outclassed by the better, faster, younger talent in this tournament.  Hopefully ROH is dead and buried by this time next year

Big fan of the sign made from the remnants of the 30 pack you pre-gamed with, still wet with can rings!!!

RE: Tony getting the DVD wrong.  I thought maybe it was an anti-DVDVRMB bit.  I know he misnames moves from time to time but he definitely knows a DVD, so yeah, I agree that one felt possibly intentional.  Nigel then described the impact of the move without correcting him.  He also knows it's not a fucking Canadian Destroyer.  Claudio isn't even Canadian!!

Man, ESPN really picked a doozy of a photo to post of Sunny.

Especially tough, since just yesterday, Tommaso Ciampa was a part of this rather good chest workout video from Renaissance Periodization.  And during that, he was asked who his favorite WWE people were.  Naturally, she came up as his crush, and that old promo photo is just...I mean, goddamn.  GODDAMN.  There is no such thing as rock bottom; you can always fall further.

She looked incredible when she went into the WWE Hall of Fame back in 2011.  She cleaned up, got back in shape, looked and sounded great.  It sounds silly now but I was really proud of her knowing how low she'd fallen even back then in the 00's.  I always thought that that not leading to her getting another run or a job with WWE contributed to her further downfall because she was back to being a mess pretty quickly after that

  16. As far as QT goes, I always liked him as a mid-card heel.  Good wrestler, good talker, pretty entertaining in the right role.  My first thought was he's probably going to WWE but we shall see.

If he left because he thought AEW needed to be more "entertainment" than "New Japan", c ya!  It's already been going in that direction and it sucks.  I've said it before but there's a level of silliness and comedy and goofiness that I love in wrestling that AEW has managed to pull off really well at times, but I'm not a fan of the sports entertainment WWE/TNA stuff that, based on QTV, he is

If he left because he wanted a bigger push, again, don't see him any higher than midcard in AEW.

I think WWE is probably a better place for him anyway, he'd be a great midcard heel there and probably a better fit without the baggage he already has in AEW where a lot of fans just don't want to see him at all

See my thing with AEW right now is that if the passion is gone from the viewer, it’s because a large chunk of the soul is missing from the show. Yeah this G1 is going to produce a dozen matches that slap, but to me it’s like The Owen. I just really, really have no reason to care and it feels inorganic. I think this is one big one where myself and DVDVR brethren Coach TK disagree as fans - tournaments for the sake of tournaments absolutely sucks as a pro wrestling construct. Tony can’t get enough of it, but I’m out. It just sucks.

AEW at its best is Best Friends having wacky blowoff matches, Orange Cassidy doing character stuff moreso than five star classics, Danhausen cursing dudes, HoB being spooky, all the good shit.

AEW’s trajectory with my buy in kind of follows Kris Statlander’s character arc, actually. Late 2023 AEW needs less generic hoss, more alien.

    Embrace your alien, Tony.

Thanks for bringing up The Owen.  Owen was one of my all-time favorites, loved KOTR back in the day, should have been right up my alley.  And yet I didn't care about either tournament because they didn't do anything to make me care.  Slapping Owen's name on an underwhelming tournament isn't enough.

And likewise, Tony had that "put your money where your mouth is" comment about the CC tourny, like "this is what you guys want, I'm booking this for you, don't make me regret it!" in a totally self-defeating way IMO.  I'm not really into this tournament yet for a lot of reasons, a big one being that it's just getting thrown out there at a time where wins and losses have seemed to matter less than at any time in the company and there's already too many belts for me to keep track of.  Too much product as well.  If this is the start of a shift, great!  But you can't expect everyone who's been down on the product to just be magically 100% on board again because you threw a G1 style tournament at them
