Adam Cole's getting a title shot lookingi like that and Jay White's a Very Special Guest Star looking like that. Just an observation.

And Jay beat Trent, who just beat Nick Jackson the other week, and will likely beat Orange, who beat Cole.  Just sayin'

It's almost like King Switch is streets ahead of all these geeks ?

God...that was such an incredible line in a FIRE promo ???

    Came here to post that.

Knew where he was going with the dog collar match once he name dropped Piper, but didn't see him cleverly working Piper's opponent into it like that.  Awesome

Hopefully Greg shows up in the crowd like he did last time

It'll be a Rampage match, so the crowd will mostly be burned out by then. Don't set expectations too high. I really wish they'd do Rampage live and go to 90 minutes. Do the Elevation taping there too.

The show has good matches but it's rare to see a great match, imo, on the show because crowd isn't as into it by that point and it's just overall low energy compared to Dynamite.

Rampage has had a lot of really good matches, but yeah, the crowd is a bit of an issue.

I'm also of the opinion that in this day and age wrestling needs to be live.  I know Meltzer has banged the drum forever on it not mattering and the ratings averaging out the same live v. taped, but as a wrestling fan I 100% care more when the shows are live and it adds to the general interest level and heat of the product being up.  It absolutely was a huge part of the 90's boom.

That said, AEW isn't hot enough where they can fill two big arenas every week, so we're probably stuck with mostly taped shows on Fridays.  Could be worse

  4. I'm a few pages back and I know there's a rule against this kinda stuff, but I legit didn't know there was a popular opinion of hate on Will Ospreay

Is this a cultural thing?  I think he's a perfect Will Ospreay.  He's no Jay White, but who is?

    Also, Owls are dope.

I saw that was what he was doing but assumed that they don't do those kind of things so much these days outside of the real hardcore death match places.

I rewatched it over and over to see if Hanger bladed b4 that spot, difficult to do with the PIP, and I'm pretty sure he just trusted Lance to carve him up there ?

  6. FWIW, I listened to Meltzer and Alvarez and they didn't know how Hangman got busted open because it was in PIP and they didn't pay attention

I did.  Archer took the hook from the turnbuckle/ropes, admired it, checked how sharp it was, and proceeded to mutilate his opponent with it, as one does in a Texas DEath Match ?

With the health issues he had earlier this year I have do issues with him appearing heavier than people are used to like others seemed to. He seems to be in a much better place professionally and personally now so I believe he will probably work on trimming down and getting back to doing some of the athletic things he was able to do before but on the plus side, I believe he should focus on strictly the power stuff and not do any of it at all .

Agreed on his game being based on power, because just look at the dude, he's massive.  The high spots are the icing on the cake, and he shouldn't be doing it all the time.  But honestly, the weirdest thing about how Vince time warped to the 1950's with Keith was that he was already working that style in NXT more or less.  The highspot matches with Djiakovic stuck out, but everyone was so much smaller than him there, he was tossing people around left and right and he'd do his highspots after he'd decimated dudes with his power, which is a style that absolutely works in America, see:  Vader, The Man They Call

Given how odd Vince has become over the years, I could see this just being a thing where Vince didn't vibe with him, didn't like the cut of his jib and decided he'd never make it in his promotion.  Too much soul power, not enough ruthless agression?  I've given up on trying to carry water for WWE anymore

Was it JR who said Keith Lee was like a young Mark Henry?

Other Hoss fights include Lee vs. Hobbs (really want to see this) and Lee vs. Bears Bronson and Boulder.

him and Brock was right there, it blew the roof off in a Rumble!

this is one of the biggest misses from Vince, the iron was hot with K-Lee and he for whatever fucking reason didn't strike it.  In a hoss promotion where he's decided to build around Brock and Goldberg for big matches, and Roman who is way more than just hoss matches, but fuck.....

I'm rooting for Keith Lee to succeed hard, because it would be the biggest organic FU to the WWE possible.  Like, this dude has it, all we need to do is put him on tv and let him do his thing.  I'd be lying tho if I said I'm not worried about his size/health.  He's at that age and he's had a lot of injuries, can he hold up to the demands of being a top guy at this point?  I hope he can, but I wouldn't have put him in a ladder match right off the bat, just for example.  He needs to be protected and booked around for a while, and he really hasn't wrestled much on TV at all in a couple years.  We all love his NXT run but the pandemic has warped my perception of time for sure, that was a long time ago.....

As far as the Switchblade name earlier, Sami Callihan was in a tag team called Switchblade Conspiracy for a while, but they split when his partner got signed. Jay White took the name when Sami wasn’t using it anymore.

The other guy in the team was Jon Moxley.

This may all be true and factual, but the name is now taken and owned.  As far as King Switch is concerned Mox is lower on the NJPW pecking order and he's kinda just fucking around in America til he can get back to his throne and further antagonize Okada.  I'm not sure he even knows who Sami Callihan is

The guy in the red hat there gets progressively drunker as the show goes on.  I first noticed it near the end of the show where he could barely stand and I was worried we were gonna have a Utah Jazz situation.  Glad he had a fun time!

  11. Was Punk/Mox v. FTR the best unadvertised match in AEW history?  I felt dumb for not knowing who his partner would be.  Punk did little jumping jacks when he got down to ringside and I actually thought it might be AmDrag for a second.  Why the hell not?  Mox was perfect.  Such a fun match, so much going on, worth a rewatch tomorrow.  Off the top of my head I loved Mox going for an atomic drop, blind tag, hits the move, gets grabbed from behind with a headlock, Saito fucking suplex!  Punk was next level selling his knee, I settled on legit tweak combined with great work.  The selling on his lower back post-match after Tully didn't go up for the GTS for the first time was real as shit tho ?

  12. I fucking loved that main event.  That's Archer at his best, the legit crazy unhinged and dangerous madman who ran roughshod all over Japan.  That hardway gusher he gave Page from the hook on the turnbuckle!  The blackout to the outside on the fucking steps!!!!!!  I legit made an audible sound I rarely make watching rasslin anymore and thought he was broken in half by gawd!!! That was ugly live.  Loved the Jake spot outside.  Loved the finish.  Loved everything about this.  My first thought was that between the two Danielson matches and this Page is putting in early work for WOTY, he killed himself in this one and I loved every second of it

Now that King Switch has arrived, shit done changed.  Jay White is my guy.  He was on the verge of megastardom in Japan pre-pandemic, I'm super psyched to see him show up in AEW.  It felt inevitable with him in the states after COVID restrictions between Japan and New Zealand really fucked him over.  I think he's legit top 5 in the world right now all-around, there's nothing he isn't really fucking good at, biggest addition since Danielson IMO

Great show, hopefully this is a big momentum builder

  13. TBS is a more basic channel than TNT on most cable packages due to the NBA premium and as such is in more homes and has typically tamer prime time fare.  I was NOT expecting such a blood bath in the first match on the channel.  Holy Christ.  Guess that answered my question if they'd still be doing blood on Dynamite at all.....

I was also surprised at all the swearing.  Seemed like if not more it was at least as much as they'd do on TNT.  Tony even threw in a 'bullshit' and the commentators don't cuss often

Tony was noticeably off his game after the opener, he doesn't typically flub that much.  Ruby did the Saito suplex and JR started talking about how he and Tony had seen Masa Saito throw a few of those back in the day.  Then seconds later Tony is talking about "the Saito moonsault" ?

I didn't like opening the show with the title match again.  I understand why they did it, but I'd prefer they did the "standby match" deal so they can still tease going the distance.  It absolutely killed the rest of the show.  I didn't think the crowd was great to begin with, but after that match it was D-E-A-D for almost everything.  Easily the worst crowd in AEW history in the second hour, I'd like to hear from some people who were in the building.  I felt really bad for the guys in the main event who were busting their asses to have a good match to almost no reaction

I hated having Lucha Bros come out to save Pillman right before the main event, thus killing their usually huge entrance pop.  That's booking 101 shit there

I thought Ruby did as well as she could with Jade.  Is she hurt or not?  Because she did a hell of a job selling that wing.  She's a great sympathetic babyface, they could do worse than a few months of matches where Jade is just tossing her around.  Plays to both their strengths, and they can definitely have better matches than this the more they wrestle

Obviously we all know Jungle Boy's father is Luke Perry, but I recently discovered that his maternal grandfather (Alan Sharp) was a Scottish novelist and screenwriter (Ulzana's Raid, Night Moves, The Osterman Weekend, Rob Roy)

Are there any other wrestlers with interesting non-wrestling ancestors?

It always blew me away that WWE had Kris Kristofferson's son Jody in developmental for a while.  Supposedly Kris would even drop by the PC from time to time!

  15. I don't follow WWE storylines week to week, what's up with blowing off AJ and Omos on tv in a squash?  And at the same time programming him against some NXT scrub?  He's one of the few credible top guys they have left, and in Vince's mind these are important spots......but it's not doing him any favours

I guess we'll see how bulletproof he is if they try to turn around and push him as a main eventer again after all this.  It's easily the worst he's been booked in WWE, right?

  16. One big problem with comparing WWE contracts to NFL contracts is that NFL players get actual guaranteed up front money in the form of a signing bonus.  So say the # on paper for player X is 30 million over 3 years, that player might get $5 million up front when he signs, but that's all that's guaranteed, he can be cut at any time after that and the team is off the hook.  It's also a way to circumvent the cap in many cases and we don't need to get into the minutia of NFL contract wizardry, but players will get a lump sum to sign even if they never realize the top line figure that makes the headlines.

i have no idea how exactly WWE structures their contracts these days with downsides, dates, bonuses etc. but I'm pretty sure KO for example didn't get like 500K-1M up front just for signing.  If he did, bravo!

  17. Pacing of the title match was tremendous.  I watched it not live but without spoilers, didn't look at the clock once because I didn't want to know how much time had passed and I was totally engrossed in the story they were telling.  I also appreciate AEW not giving calls on the time every 10-15.  They do that in Japan but the audience is accustomed to it, American audiences are not.  I don't think the first near fall was until around the 30 minute mark and the crowd ate it up!  Also, when they repeated spots it meant something, rather than just going to something pat to kill time because they were figuring out what to do next.  Everything made sense and even when things went slightly awry they never lost the pace or the crowd.  Danielson is such a F'n ring general and Page was with him every step of the way.

Can't wait to see them lock up again, and in the NJPW style I suspect it will be a very different match building off the foundations of this one

Weird as it may sound, JDS is deserving of some recognition for being RotY. He wouldn't win it, but for a guy with zero matches going in to this year, I would now love to see more of him.

That's not ridiculous at all because as far as legit rookies go he's as close as you can get I guess.  He looked impressive, and he also looked like he totally got it and was really having a great fucking time.  He's past his time as a top heavyweight fighter in MMA, but if he'd gone into rasslin a decade ago he would have been a huge star.  He was in MMA and def made more money doing that, but I'd love to see more of him in AEW

I thought he was going to be at Triplemania but the internet is telling me no
