Bryan Danielson also thinks Glenn Jacobs is a good guy, so, like, I dunno, wrestlers are fuckin’ stupid I don’t know what to tell you.

Pretty obnoxious to think you have a more valid opinion than someone who knows him.  You’ve probably never met Jacobs and know nothing egotistical him except you don’t like his politics, right?  Lol, this forum is so far up its own ass….

Anyway, on the bright side, you’re my breaking point.  Last post, I won’t be back.

Lol, she just finished a 7-year run on a highly rated sitcom.  Google says she was making $150,000 per episode at the end of the run. Even if thaf’s incorrect, it is probably not far off. It’s safe to assume she got paid very well for those seven years.

No better way to start the off-season thread than by dealing with John Fisher's "apology" to the fans of Oakland:

He doesn’t owe that entitled fanbase a thing.  Fans didn’t come out to support the team even when it was wining and voters have been opposing improvements to the Coliseum for at least twenty-five years. Is it also his fault the Raiders and Warriors left town?

Besides, if Manfred and MLB thought the team would be berried off in Oakland, they would still be in Oakland.

i don’t think the A’s & MLB have handled this well, but a lot of the blame (most) should fall on the city and its residents.

While, in principle, I agree...   Your job as an AD or head football coach is to get your team to succeed by any (legal(-ish)) means necessary.  Sluka's absolutely in the right if they've blatantly broken promises to him.

If he's as good as advertised, and it looks like he is, then someone is going to get him in their school and give him everything he wants or needs.  How many schools out there are treading on past glory and would love nothing more than relevance again? (Florida, Auburn, I'm looking in your direction...)

Granted, he’s looked far better than you’d expect a qb at UNLV to look, but…. he’s the qb at UNLV. Wanna know how you get to be the qb at UNLV?  You don’t impress anyone at Texas, Alabama or any of the other 20 bluebloods enough for them to want you.  Yeah, if he was promised more money than he’s getting, he’s entitled to walk out and go elsewhere.  But, no matter how you rationalize it, he’s still admitting the money means more than winning and he’s still bailing on his teammates mid-season. I don’t doubt he’ll end up in a good spot somewhere.  Hope it’s not at my school. Honestly, my advice is for someone to hold up a photo of Arch Manning and say “get over yourself, dude”.

Also, if he did stay and UNLV made the playoff, boosters would be lining up to throw money at him and pro scouts would be lining up behind the boosters. Just saying.  He seems to have talent.  Money’s going to find him somehow unless he goes out of his way to make it harder.

  5. Went to the Backyard Brawl over the weekend (WVU-Pitt) and it was a lot of fun until the last five minutes. Boy, Neil Brown may not be a good football coach at this level, but he sure knows how to kill a fanbase. He somehow won WVU fans over in the offseason and managed to squander all that goodwill in three weeks,  WVU was up by ten points with 4:58 to play in the game and Pitt had 4 yards of offense in the second half at that point.  Of course, Pitt then proceeded to carve up the WVU secondary not once, but twice in the last five minutes and WVU aided and abetted Pitt’s unlikely come-from-behind win by completely failing to run time off the clock when they got the ball back.

Be interesting to see what each team does in conference play. Big 12 lacks a true powerhouse and will probably be wide open. ACC will probably be up for grabs unless Florida State pulls itself together.  Saturday's game didn’t convince me either team will contend when all is said and done, but stranger things have happened. Both coaches are probably in precarious positions, since neither one has been consistently impressive and the athletic directors who hired them have both been fired.  Both Narduzzi & Brown have made it this far in large part due to premature contract extensions that guarantee them most of their money unless fired for cause. I’m guessing luck runs out for at least one of them this December, probably Brown.

I (sadly) watch Unsportsmanlike and Smallmon had already picked her new team (Green Bay) before Week 1 started. Canty has been extra aggressive and negative about Tua before the concussion, mostly because of the contract he got and for whatever reason being against Tua being more outspoken and showing confidence in his ability to help the team win which baffled me as he's always been about players getting paid.

Smallmon picked a team then they circled back around and were doing bits based around “the home visit”. Smallmon was in Green Bay for the first time (?) this weekend.  I dunno.  I don’t dislike Smallmon -she seems likable and is very attractive - but I feel like she rarely has a distinctive viewpoint that adds to the show. I don’t dislike Unsportsmanlike but I’ve watched for the better part of a year and it has never hooked me.  I felt m same way about Keyshawn, JWill and Max, but Keyshawn and JWill have some interesting viewpoints based on their playing days (I like Max Kellerman as a box of analyst, but the less said about his morning talk show, the better).

  7. Considering the 2022 season was only a year and a half ago, the Dolphins seem very unprepared for a season without Tua. I dunno how you move forward after 2022 and don’t have a better replacement than Skylar Thompson on the bench. They thought Tua would never suffer another concussion? That seems charmingly naive.  There’s a rumor going around that Brady might be interested in suiting up for the Fins, but I’m nots expecting that to work out even if he is interested.

i’ll be surprised if Tua is back on the field any time soon. But it’s entirely his decision (and his doctors), not mine.  Mostly annoyed by the faux concern and hand-wringing going on.  I know ESPN talking heads have to talk about something, but when you’re opining that the team or the league should force Tua into retirement for his own good, I think you need some perspective.  Tua’s an adult and, so far as I know, competent to make decisions for himself. I am guessing that, if he get cleared and plays again, it’s because he likes playing.  Not all of us treat jobs as some sort of punishment from God.  Some of us work because we like it.  At this point, I am guessing he has reasons to keep playing besides finances. The decision to retire or not should be entirely up to Tua and his family.  I don’t know enough about his life, the specifics of the situation, or how he feels about anything to even begin to have an informed opinion about what he should do. I’ve never even had a conversation with his neurologist. Also, it’s less than 24 hours later since the latest incident.  He hadn’t even had time to get a proper neurological assessment.  Maybe save the hand-wringing for after the doctor comes in to give him a report.

On the plus side, the Tua debate did finally motivate me to turn off the Chris Canty morning show in annoyance.  Probably won’t turn it back on anytime soon. I don’t particularly enjoy it so I dunno why I watch. Haven’t liked an ESPN talk show since Mike and Mike split up and Bayless left the network. It was a relief that Canty and cohosts spent so much time talking about Tua that they skipped the dopey Bachlorette parody they’ve been doing with Michelle Smallmon picking a new team to root for.

  8. PS5 Pro price and specs are close to what was rumored, so price doesn’t faze me. Companies have taken a loss on console sales for decades, reasoning that they would make it up on software sales, but component prices are extremely high right now and Sony is allegedly under fire internally for slim profit margins There will be a lot of grumbling, but I will be surprised if Pro 5 doesn’t sell respectably well. Of course, if it does, it will set the precedent for PS6 to be even more expensive. Worth noting that PS4 Pro only accounted for 15% of PS4 sales.

I’ve barely touched my PS5 or Series X this year, so rather looking forward to getting a 5 Pro and firing up Stellar Blade and Black Myth Wukong.

  9. Finally getting around to Ted Lasso. Wife and I really loved season one,  I rarely enjoy comedies, so s1 is probably the first sitcom I’ve particularly liked in a decade or so.

Season 2 is a different story. Not digging it nearly as much.  They got away from the soccer and filled the time with relationship plots that seem very much things that mostly only happen in sitcoms.

Watching the Coach Beard after dark episode now.  Think my streaming box is broken.  Counter says the episode is 43 minutes long, but it feels like we’ve been watching it for at least 143 min. Hope  Season 3 refocuses on the things that worked in s1.

Ted is a fun character. And Roy Kent was probably a blast to play. He’s such a ridiculous character.

In what universe is Halle Berry not ridiculously good looking?!

I tried to say this yesterday, but the board was acting up. The comment was “Halle Berry looked hot in the 90’s. What happened?”.  Time. Time is what happened. Berry was 33 in 1999, which makes her 58 today,  I don’t follow her career much, but Google suggests she looks stunning for 58 (or 48, for that matter).  I doubt there’s a huge number of better-looking 58-year-olds on the planet.

  11. Someone at my company got a call today from Roman Reigns. Wanted her to acknowledge him and help him move some wealth out of his country. Guess stock market has him rattled.

Coworker had to google Roman to figure out who he was. Roman needs to leave the Isle of Relevancy more often & get his a** to a photo op with some Make A Wish kids pronto.

  12. I wonder how many of the people wringing their hands over Game Informer’s cancelation - & subsequent website scrubbing - actually used the website or subscribed to the magazine?  It seems very much performative outrage considering how small the user/subscriber base was. Game Informer had a good run, but print is a dying medium & it doesn’t seem to me like they were still a big name in games journalism.  I am guessing their website traffic was a small fraction of IGN’s.

GameStop has plenty of financial issues aside from Game Informer, so I don’t feel like shutting down an unprofitable magazine is out of line. I don’t think GameStop has handled it well on server fronts, but I don’t pay thier employees or the hosting bill, so my opinion doesn’t count for much. I assume they had their reasons.

I canceled mine a few months ago mainly because Bryan's been getting pretty annoying to listen to lately.

Bryan & Dave are the only two wrestling-related personalities I listen to anymore. I haven’t subscribed to the newsletter in 20 years, but I find them rather entertaining.  I don’t take them that seriously though.  I pay no attention to star ratings or whether or not I agree with every point they make.  They’re an easy ten minute listen.  Honestly, I find it amusing how “fans” hang on every word and get excited when one of the, *gasp* has an opinion someone doesn’t agree with. Lol, poor Dave can’t win. Half his detractors think he’s a WWE loyalist who hurts AEW by  saying anything negative, other half thinks he’s a Tony Khan hand puppet who is secretly booking AEW.  And, yes, that theory has been thrown out a bunch of times. Dave’s the Skip Bayless of wrestling.  I like Skip, so that’s basically a compliment.  People take them both too seriously.

I avoid every other wrestling-related website, message board, and social media account like the plague.  Except this one. Not sure why I visit here.  Habit, I guess.  I found DVD during the green board days and was fairly active during the 00’s.

  14. I had no idea Game Informer was still around.  Remarkable run, considering print is a dying media & they were owned by a dying company. I subscribed for a very long time, but was informed at one point that they didn’t want me as a subscriber.  I was barely paying attention to GI at that point, mostly subscribing to support them out of some sense of nostalgia, so I more or less forgot about them after that.

(One of the editors went on social media a few years back and basically said not to subscribe or follow them if you weren’t a liberal.  Seemed like a bad business strategy to me, but who am I to argue if you stop liking money. In hindsight, encouraging subscribers to drop them might have been short-sighted.)

Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy were two of the people let go which is... telling

(Apparently they both lost the game of executive musical chairs when Payback was cancelled)

Yeah, Grubb says they weren’t part of the layoffs,  but they were squeezed out.

Seen a few Bungie folk say (on Twitter) that Bungie management oversold the health and value of the company to get the Sony deal done, and that Bungie would have closed up shop a fair while ago without Sony. Seems plausible, at least.  Sony looks unlikely to get the kind of roi they were expecting. I’m not expecting Bungie to continue once Marathon is released, Destiny 3 doesn’t seem in the cards, Destiny 2 support seems to be at least winding down, everything else Bungie was working on has been canceled or given to another studio

Bungie was a heckuva studio during the Halo era.  But things change, and Bungie didn’t adapt well enough. It happens.

  16. Didn’t know 3x3 basketball was an Olympic sport until I turned it on this morning. Kinda wondering why it’s an Olympic sport, but then again, I’m annoyed they dropped the men’s 50 km racewalk from this Olympics, so…

I am wondering why US 3x3 team isn’t first three pros left off the other men’s basketball team.

My favourite comic book series currently, Ultimate Spider-Man. Sad to see the state of The Amazing Spider-Man.

Lol, you take comic books way too seriously. Though you stopped short of wishing death or some sort of tragedy on Zeb Wells for writing a comic you don’t like.  You’ve done that in the past, so I guess this represents a baby step forward. Congrats.

  18. Lol, kids,

my 23-year-old niece is staying with us while her parents are out of town (she moved back home to save money until she gets married next year). Apparently she was doing some cooking while we were gone today and decided to clean the oven for us. Oven has  a self-cleaning feature so not a big deal.  Except apparently there were enough food bits on the bottom of the oven to somehow start a fire.  And when that happened, the oven locked so she couldn’t open the door to put out the fire.

Niece turns around, freaks, doesn’t know what to do. Sees a neighbor outside she knows, so she runs out to get the neighbor. Except neighbor is on her daily walk & has ear buds on, so doesn’t hear niece & continues on her way.  At which point niece whips out her phone, call 911 then chases after neighbor.

By the time neighbor & niece get back to house, fire has burned itself out and all is good.  Except, of course, that enough time has passed that fire dept. is pulling into neighborhood right then. Lol, at least it got straightened out before they kicked down my door or sprayed my house with a high pressure hose.

    Lol, kids
