  1. Gallows and Anderson are free later this year, but again they are not going to make people go BANANA like a Moxley.

Between this alleged PAC situation and the OWE crew, the American visa mess could hurt some of the things that make AEW unique.

*puts on tinfoil hat* or is Linda calling in favours to deny visas to all of WWE’s competitors?!  (Being very sarcastic by the way, you can’t be too explicit these days with everyone frothing at the mouth on both sides)

Also, thinking about it, the tag division is pretty fleshed out already, the Club may do better going back to Japan considering the lack lustre state of NJPW tag division.

  2. In answer to your first question, he smacked him around a bit in a short but entertaining match, finishing with the Dirty Deeds (not the impaler version he used on Juice, which presumably is a super finisher reserved for tougher foes than this sororities young lion).

Edit: WTF auto correct I meant spirited...although who knows where Mox could take this impressionable young man on his excursion ?

  3. It’s funny how no one on the ROH roster is even being considered in any of the chatter about possible entrants. Does that speak to the dearth of heavyweight talent in ROH or the embarrassment of riches among the New Japan mainstays and surprises already announced?

If I were in a flippant mood, I would ask what the hell are NJPW getting out of this partnership right now, well except for the occasional and welcome Villain Enterprises appearances and the awesome Bandido in BOSJ?

  4. I’m not as down on Jerichos performance as everyone else, I found the time flew by in the match and they were both smart enough working to Jerichos limitations that it never felt close to falling apart.

But perhaps it’s also from having the bar set absurdly low for old timer performances by Taker and Goldberg...

Elsewhere on the card, I concur with never wanting to see anything like that Ibushi apron bump ever again. He’s a flake, he wants Naito to purposely try to cripple him, whatever the motivation. Save the man from himself.

  5. Riddle and Strong really kicked some arse.  It’s a pleasure to watch guys/girls who are so on, everything they do is crisp and every hold and throw and transition is aesthetically beautiful in the same way as ballet or Kung-fu. But also not like a choreographed dance routine. Anyway, it was great.

Also, Shayna has to be the best heel in any of WWE. She embodies her character and, maybe it’s because I don’t catch NXT every week, but I would be happy for her to just continue doing her thing for a while longer.

By the time Okada's ready to leave Japan, Omega will be at least as broken down as Tana is now.   Omega's only got about 3-4 years of his prime left at most.

Do you not think he’s had enough down time between the more gruelling tours (G1 etc) to be in a better condition than Tana who was likely working hurt a lot trying to keep the lights on as the ace for years?

Im not sure either way, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Omega has a bit more gas in the tank especially as, with how Moxley specifically called out WWE’s house show loops, we have reason to believe that AEW may go easier on the touring.

  7. I really enjoyed the show the whole way through, even most of the undercard stuff.

Okada / Brody King interactions were fun, I think King is a great prospect and a significant get for ROH. I do find Okada’s reactions to Jericho hilarious, just no-selling the creepiness and being all puzzled ‘what the hell is a pain maker anyway?’

It looked like Shingo was being set up as the all conquering hero after bulldozing through every one in his block, but I have no problem with Ospreay getting the nod. Perhaps Dominion is his final swan song as Junior before moving onto other things?

Mox and Juice’s post match promos were something else with the intensity. Moxley beating up Red Shoes’ son should be good times.

  8. The Observer also notes that one of the most striking takeaways from the PPV numbers is the lack of crossover between those ordering WWE PPVs on TV (those few who still do) and those who ordered DoN on PPV. Only 2-3% of those WWE buyers also ordered DoN.

Even if you take into account that PPV buyers (as opposed to Network watchers) may be more set in their ways or less aware of the wider wrestling scene, that still suggests a severe lack of penetration into the WWE fan base for the debut show.

Edit to add: the comparison was specifically against those 15,700 folks who ordered MITB this year

The Cody/Dustin match was better than I expected and had a rare southern feel that I don't think any North American wrestling has had in over a decade.

I was watching this match again on replay last night. The whole end-to-end (including pre and post match) has an electric atmosphere, but there’s a moment just after Dustin hits the Code Red, where he’s flat on his back and all he does is raise his arms up from the mat, and there’s a slow building eruption that just gets louder and louder. It’s like a self sustaining fire that is just feeding off itself and growing.

And just as it peaks, and the chant starts, it’s not Dustin or Dusty, it’s ‘AEW’. The goodwill and gratitude for the promotion to feature this emotional story when the WWE wasn’t interested, but all positive energy. I think that’s the spirit that they need to try and maintain.

Stroll is just a common word for Perambulate, brother.

On the non-controversial topic of prams, you do get the rich parents who just go all out on the true old-fashioned prams for thousands of pounds. We had a friend who did that I was like WTF, spend the money on something the kid will enjoy...

Anyway, I saw that list again from Naylor to Triple Hs assistant back in 2012 of recommended signings. Is that the catalyst that set NXT on its inexorable journey towards the super-Indy / PWG with a budget? Was the intention always to be workrate heavy or did that come along due to the strengths and influences of those whom WWE signed?

Billy's match with Benoit at Armageddon 2000 was pretty much his last shot at being a singles guy. He blew up really early into the match and nearly dropped Benoit on his head with a gorilla press slam. If Benoit couldn't get something good out of someone, they were pretty much worthless.

Bruce Pritchard said on his podcast (and come to your own conclusion on his honesty in general) that Billy suffered from asthma or similar respiratory illness that held him back and was responsible for him blowing up so bad and presumably instances like Eddie describes.

Either way, whether because of his health issues or as demonstrated before our eyes in the quality of his singles matches, he was certainly more suited to tag matches.

  12. I don’t hate Gresham, I was impressed by what he did but it was in a detached way and I didn’t feel invested in the matches. He comes across to me like ZSJ minus, as JR would say, the ‘piss and vinegar’.

I haven’t seen much of him though as I don’t watch ROH regularly, so I’m open minded with him outside of the tournament.

I watched the AEW preshow and that battle royal is one of the worst things I have ever seen. Then that promo with the librarians made me tap. I was getting WCW 2000 flashbacks. I was told Cody and Dustin had a great match. I hope these guys get their shit together before they have national TV and don't book every indy freak show they know.

It kind of felt like three different shows stitched together:

The pre-show with the circus of a battle royale and the freaks and geeks and iffy skits

The first half of the PPV with occasional really hot moments (reveal of Awesome Kong for example) punctuating matches with a lot of people doing a lot of spots and the commentary team somewhat all over the place (held together valiantly by Excalibur).

Then the second half with three classic bouts, each very different from the other and each excellent in their own way. And exiting on a massive shock and hook of the Moxley reveal.

I personally feel like that second half was worth the price of admission and the Cody/Dustin match is really worth seeking out.

Edit to add: and no evil owner! (Well, Brandi maybe had some questionable motivations but I don't think that counts)

  14. I watched way more of the tournament matches than I was expecting beforehand. Those cards with nothing but 10 BOSJ matches amazingly just flew by.

Equally amazing was finding myself so emotionally invested in two Rocky Romero singles matches (vs Ospreay and vs ELP). The commentary team really added to the drama and you couldn't help but root for the guy. Kevin Kelly has to be the most consistently good play-by-play announcer in the game (at least with Juniors you don't have to hear DESTINOOOOOOO. The Brazilian football commentator impression is my only pet peeve with him).

Ospreay is on another level, and I thought Shingo, ELP, Eagles and to a lesser extent SHO have really shone. Gresham and Titan were just bleh. DOUKI was pretty underwhelming but added a different flavour to the proceedings. All in all, several hours well spent and it's not quite done yet.

I think they should add a spin to the tv title and have it go to the judges if it goes to the 10-15 minute time limit. Gives a legitimate reason to throw it all out in a sprint and go flashy.

If the judges are scoring based on hits landed, near falls etc, this would give them also more of a reason to track the more granular data which fits with the ‘sports analytics’ angle. If it’s played like dance judges, then less so...

I don't know how Alvarez and Vinny can do their retro Raw and Nitro recaps in addition to watching current Raw. I've been tempted to go back and watch some old Raws and Nitros just to see how bad they were.

Man...when you think about it, sometimes it feels like bad wrestling far outweighs the good.

I have a Torch VIP subscription and I think about this a lot when listening to someone like Wade Keller talk about covering weekly wrestling since 1987. I have no idea how you can have such passion for anything to subject yourself to the collective crap that he has subjected himself to in covering 3 decades of this stuff and come out the other side still optimistic and energised about the industry. I definitely would have needed some off-seasons, or some time watching only NJPW or whatever.

I don't know, 1999 had a lot of really fucking bad shows.

That's not to say IYH4: NWOOT didn't suck (even the acronym sucked!) but 1999 man... Fuck 1999 wrestling.

A few decent shows in isolation such as Spring Stampede, but, looking back, mostly rubbish to be honest.

  18. No Way Out of Texas was one of the very few VHS tapes I had back when the only terrestrial TV wrestling in UK was WCW on Channel 5 and we couldn’t afford Sky.

So I watched the crap out of that show and savoured all of it as only a content starved wrestling fan could, from the high flying Light Heavyweight contest between TAKA and Pantera (trying to block out the racist commentary from Lawler and son) to the endless ‘War of Attrition’ 5 vs 5 match (which did thankfully pick up the tempo with the Shamrock/Rocky exchange that blew the roof off) to Bradshaw getting swarmed by these NWA nobodies to the Mero marital strife (bleh).

Also maybe the biggest impression left on 15 year old me was Sunny in that pink jumpsuit... settle down Custosnetico.

  19. In full agreement on the skits decision, although I'm not sure how they square that with the expectations of the hardcore BTE fans and the sensibilities that Bucks and Scurll (assuming he turns up later in the year) have shown in their content. They have to make sure the vision doesn't become schizophrenic as they move forward.

I did wonder during the Tony Khan media scrum when challenged on the Cody sledgehammer thing, he alluded to every person having their own individual motivation and giving them an outlet to do that. That felt a bit too 'inmates running the asylum'. But, the evidence so far is that he's a solid leader and everything came together well so no reason to be concerned.

Regarding the Moxley 'Paradigm Shift', I loved the passion and the unleashing of pent up energy, although it felt to me like a jarring tonal shift from BAMF who will run through everyone with sadistic pleasure that we saw on the PPV to 'ra ra go Team AEW' when he said he will fight anyone who stands in AEW's way.

  20. Another couple of stray thoughts:

    - It's too bad Brian Pillman Jr appears to be only a one-off at Double or Nothing based on AEW's roster page. I feel like he has a real star presence and along with MJF is one of those guys in their early 20's who could explode over the next couple of years.

    - I caught the few seconds of Yuka Sakazaki's theme that played during her entrance, thought it sounded pretty nuts then listening again in isolation, it really is like someone vomiting anime rainbows into your earholes.
