  1. GUNPOINT- Super Meat Boy stealth game. Very silly, very precise. The wiring mechanics are an excellent counterpoint to how that game feels once you have to start moving. Everything you physically do yourself feels very dangerous and heavy, and really satisfying when a plan works perfectly- or works despite your planning.

CRITTER CRUNCH- Okay, it's old. It's an old PS3 release that ended up at Steam at...some point. Anyways, I was looking for a puzzle game to play, and Critter Crunch is a puzzle game I can play. The reference point it uses for its mechanic (Money Puzzle Exchanger) is so obscure that it probably will feel like a totally new idea if you've never seen either, so maybe give it a shot? It's like seven dollars.

BROTHERS- Lucky enough to beat it in one sitting, although I apparently missed a lot. It's definitely interesting, and it seems like the most publicly accessible game making an attempt at emotional resonance so that is definitely valuable. There is one moment specifically that is excellently designed, but I've seen the exact moment before in a game basically no one dang played, so it was filtered through my experience there. Still. I definitely think people should play it, and I totally get anyone that cites it as a Game of the Year contender, even if I don't agree.

OH NO THE END OF THE INDIE STREAK

GTA5- So far, the main thought I've had while playing the game is "man, Sleeping Dogs was awesome." Four hours in, GTA is yet to leave any kind of impression on me. I just bought it because I didn't want my relationship with the game to be defined with the stories terrible people tell about the terrible things they do. That's not entirely about the thread here, but I'm not excluding it either.

    Oh, and Burnout Paradise still.

  2. I really enjoyed this, but it didn't occur to me how little Cien Caras did until I came in here to read. Fair point, that.

Favorite part of the match was the top wristlock counter spots, where Alfonso and Herodes both jumped up, clamped onto Andre's leg, and then hopped down and politely took bumps. Sangre Chicana, on the other hand, starts swinging and kicking his legs and shit, making it harder on Andre, so he just gets sack-of-shitted down to the ground. Really looking forward to seeing more of him now.

  3. first time posting in a sports thread oh no i'm so scared aaaaaaaThe reason that Jacksonville doesn't sign Tebow is that if they sign him, he could win games. If he wins games, they lose their draft placement next year, AND get stuck with Tebow. The first pick they are on course to have right now is way more valuable than the potential jersey sales. Now if they go out next year and draft Bridgewater, only for him to get taken underground by some Old God's cult to be turned into a vessel for His dark message (or something season-ending like that) then yeah, maybe hire Tebow. Not this year.

  4. Here's your next "Amazing Album Streaming For Free (I Cannot Believe This Wonderous Future)": San Fermin. Bonafide epic pop composition.

  5. The indie game rush continues.

RECIEVER - Incredibly surreal dungeon crawler. The dungeon is randomly generated, and you start with the only weapon you have (of which there are three possibilities). There are only two kinds enemies. You are trying to pick up 11 pieces of treasure, and if you do that, you win.

I am describing this so sparsely because I think saying a lot about it ruins the bewildering nature of the first few runs. If you're all about minimalism, go get this game.

MIRRORMOON EP - Speaking of trying not to ruin the first run of a game, I'm not going to say shit about MirrorMoon EP other than "space is involved" and "non-violent exploration madness."

HAMMERWATCH - Gauntlet. Like, to the point that the bonus levels are just Gauntlet arcade levels. So Gauntlet. Massively Gauntlet. None More Gauntlet.

  6. The whole place is dark
Every light on this side of the town
    Suddenly it all went down
Now we'll all be brothers of
The fossil fire of the sun
Now we will all be sisters of
The fossil blood of the moon
Someone must have set 'em up
Now they'll be working in the cold, grey rock
Now they'll be working in the hot mill steam
Now they'll be working in the concrete
In the sirens and the silences now
    All the great, set-up hearts
All at once, start to beat

After tonight, if you don't want this to be
A secret out of the past
    I will resurrect it
I'll have a good go at it
I'll streak his blood across my beak
Dust my feathers with his ash
Feel his ghost breathing down my back
I will try, and know whatever I try
I will be gone, but not forever

The real truth about it is
    No one gets it right
The real truth about it is
    We're all supposed to try
There ain't no end to the sands I been trying to cross
The real truth about it is
My kind of life's no better off
If it's got the map, or if it's lost
We will try,and know whatever we try
We will be gone, but not forever
Come on, let's try and know whatever we try
We will be gone, but not forever

The real truth about it is
There ain't no end to the desert I'll cross
I've really known it all along
Mama, here comes midnight with the dead moon in its jaws
Must be the big star about to fall

    (Long, dark blues)
    The will-o'-the-wisp
    The big star is falling
    Through the static and distance
    A farewell transmission
    Listen.
  7. M.U.G.E.N. sounds like possibly the most DVDVRish piece of freeware ever.

Tragically, someone already beat the internet to "best use of MUGEN." It's called SaltyBet, and it's basically dog-fighting betting on horribly unbalanced fighting game characters. I have been thinking very hard about whether or not to stand up for it when year-end things start, because I've certainly had more fun with it than most any "major" release.

seriously, at this point my top ten is nine indie games and Devil May Cry.

  8.

I try not to link kickstarters or video game things that much, but a Japanese team of veterans spite-developing a spiritual revival of the game they're known for is a fascinating sign of the times.http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mightyno9/mighty-no-9

So, what did I miss about the Mega Man devs getting pissed at Capcom so that they're gonna do this?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Man_Legends_3

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Man_Universe

Capcom stonewalled development on new Mega Man games, and then cancelled them after Inafune left Capcom.

So, basically, Capcom did some Capcom shit and now we're here. The last time they did this we got Platinum Games, and that worked out okay.

  9. We upgraded internet in the house a while ago. This came with a "new" modem.

    Fuck this "new" modem.

It's only "new" because it's new to the household: their website says they don't issue this particular model anymore.

    Hahahahaha.

    Fuck.

caught up in a wave and it can't be stopped, i didn't let go
    constantly you're distant and cold
say i'll find someone who deserves me, i know
schoolboy crush, i'm the hurt back home
after all will you always be in my heart
    let's let this be
i think distance is what we need

caught up in a wave and it can't be stopped, i couldn't let go
i was desperate for a spark
you were burning all your suitors down
after all will you always be in my heart
    let's let this be
i think distance is what we need

caught up in a wave and it can't be stopped
with my flight, and you'd fall in love
with your own embrace if you could
we both fancied the same form of yours
i'd gift you a mirror and turn
    leave you two lovebirds alone
in life, oh i don't have the answers
am i falling off or falling backward?

  11. We have different ideas of what good comedy is, I guess. What's your favorite comedy on TV right now? None isn't an answer if you were thinking that, you have to pick one.

I haven't watched a television show that wasn't The Daily Show or sports in maybe five years, but I posses the complete runs of MST3k and Sifl & Olly, if that helps.EDIT: Oh, how about Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson? That still happens and there's jokes, does that count?

  12. I meant the map was exactly like 3, but if you thought 3 was well written you're beyond hope anyway, and I doubt you've even played IV.

    In reverse order:

    -Posted Image

-I stand by it. The Third was bone stupid, but "good comedy" is something that video games still have a LOT of trouble with, and it was funny throughout. Games have an even worse history with parody, and it pulls that off too. Ergo, "well written."

-Misread: thought Poe stopped talking about layout immediately because he then transitioned from there to talking about the gameplay, where the SR1 comparison makes more sense, which then caused me to read what you said as what I responded to and not what it was. So, I apologize for that.

I still think SR4 is bullshit, I just deployed my ordinance on an undeserving target.

  13. It's not a combination of 1 and 3, it's literally 3, exactly

It's also not Literally 3, Exactly. Saints Row The Third was the first well-written, non-shameful game parody. Saints Row IV is pandering, a thank-you letter to not letting Volition get totally ignored like the Darksiders studio did when THQ melted. They're dancing to the beat of economic tommy guns. If paying $50 to hear the the hits- and a few new tunes*- is your idea of a good time, then march proudly, without fear, into infinite jest.

*the "romance system" is, admittedly, a good gag.
