  1. Dope shit on the blue stage:

-Flying Lotus, on account of being Flying Lotus.

-2 Chainz, who probably puts on a great live show in lieu of having memorable bars

-Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, which WHY DO I NEED TO SELL YOU ON THIS

-Lunice, who is half of TNGHT, who are amazing

-Cities Aviv, who has one of my favorite beats this year and an album that basically sounds like that.

Also, Fat White Family is a hell of a pull and I am so glad that people are going to get exposed to them. The grossest of pop.

also also, sick of it all.

  2.

    RE: Franchises

While I like that "one game per franchise" limit, I think it isn't an entirely clean out. I mean, the people who would be voting for Mass Effect 2 & 3 would be voting for it for totally different reasons (2's singleplayer vs. 3's multiplayer). Making people choose between those two is an unnecessary vote splitter. Sure, it'll lead to someone putting all three ME games in their top three, but that's not worth splitting up votes and getting point totals for games that aren't actually representative.

    RE: Ballots & Threads

The idea I had was minimum 20, maximum 50. For pimping threads I was thinking about separating it by year and try to get websites to spit out information on that year's releases.

The franchise rule makes it hard for games like Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite.  Both were probably top 20 for me, and while they have vague simularities those games really stand on their own as individual games.  Halo 3 and 4 aren't even made by the same people, and Reach and ODST are strange sidebars.  Does Halo Wars count as a Halo game, not that it would make my list personally, but it doesn't seem like it should be lumped in with the rest of the Halo games.  Just something to think about before we finalize the rules.

Minimum 20, Maximum 50 seems about right, but I wouldn't oppose to doing a top 10 by year and trying to narrow it down from there.

Yeah I'm going to use the franchise rule as a personal balloting measure to make it more interesting for me, but it's not enforced or required at all.

A top fifty gives you a top five per year (2006-2013), which gives you 40, and ten for outliers & passion votes. That seems totally reasonable to me.

  3. So I guess the last pressing question is if we're just calling this year a wash. If so, we can move the date up and get this done by the end of the summer (and the start of my next semester).

  4. RE: PC

The actual reason I want to withhold dedicated PC stuff is that Generation is a completely useless term for PCs. Generation has traditionally referred to console iterations. It would basically mean "games that came out at the same time that this other stuff was happening."

I mean, if people insist, then it's no problem to let them in.

  5. I got paid.

A friend and I made a commitment to go see Swans (w/ Carla Bozulich) opening in September.

I go to check tickets, and it was sold out. Fuuuuck.

I lay down, and fail to sleep (full of energy with nowhere to put it now that the semester is done).

Stir, look at my internet, and see that Swans added a date the day before.

I'd like to see your insomnia pay off like this.

  6. This is an actual front choke

     jones+chokes+machida+gif.gif

So, I'll take your alternative over indie dudes using the holds like they might cause a bad boo-boo at the maximum.

also because i mostly watch lucha these days and yeah who knows how some of that shit works but whatever at least there's not documented footage of the reality of it

also also the punchline of this being a problem being exhibited by davey's kid hasn't eluded me

  7. I didn't want to start a new thread for this, so, seeing as we're coming upon the end of major releases for current systems and are starting to look towards THE FUTURE~~~ maybe it would be time to start entertaining a "games of the generation" thing? Just for consoles, seeing as the number of dedicated PC gamers in here is like me aaaaaaand I havent found the other one yet.

yes this is me volunteering to run it if it comes to that

  8. Brief aside: I have very little experience with reading fiction writing. I mean, I did when I was a kid, but I stopped from like 14-now, so a lot of what I'll have to say about a book is reflected through my own experiences since I have no know-how on what "good fiction writing" means other than liking it or not. This seems like a good enough metric.

    Anyways.

When I was a teenage stupid, I was deeply scorned by what I understood to be love. I had two circumstances play out very similarly to Tony, Adrian & Veronica. Neither time could I really bring myself to lash out in a meaningful, direct way like Tony did. Reading this has me feeling like "It's a wonderful life"- I could've been this guy but I'd end up where he is. Pats on backs.

  9. Successful semester, despite bronchitis, drama, late nights of unrelated art, and routinely feeling like I am far too old/stupid to be there. I've never been more relieved to be a B student. I'd fill this board with stupid student stories if I wouldn't rather eject them from my memory. I'd also burn all my biology notes if San Diego wasn't on fire*.

*do not worry, I am quite far south of all fires

  10. Yeah, they've just had a massive upper level overhaul at their entertainment stuff. X-Box is now under control of Phil Spencer, a guy who spent the 2000s working with Microsoft Game Studios, and he's been going around saying buckwild shit for an executive. Example: "...when I just heard how our message resonated with people and some of the decisions that we made, that I think were actually the wrong decisions, and we had to revisit those decisions.” So they've been very active about reasserting that the xbone is for video games. Thus dumping news of a price cut and Halo weeks before E3.

  11. STREAMSDAY BRUH

Thankfully, I had a new source of album streams pointed towards me so there should be a larger variety of crazy shit to check out for this stuff.

    This week: complete opposites.

NEW YORK TIMES- you might have heard that I like this band called Constantines. Well here is the second folkish record from their lead singer.

    3. Positive People
    4. Prove Me Wrong
    5. Let's Get Through Today
    6. What Part of You

    9. Big Smoke
    10. Free Will
    11. Receive Me
    12. Someplace I'm Supposed To Be

P4K- I kept forgetting this album was coming out so soon.

    the-roots-and-then-you-shoot-your-cousin

"...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin" by The Roots
    1. Theme From Middle Of The Night

    2. Never
    3. When The People Cheer
    4. The Devil
    5. Black Rock
    6. Understand
    7. Dies Irae
    8. The Coming
    9. The Dark (Trinity)
    10. The Unraveling
    11. Tomorrow

  12. I've bought three records from Sub Pop this year.

Two of them are rap records.

    2014.

(if you are an old rap head, Shabazz Palaces is the insane progressive concept rap thing from Ishmael Butler, a.k.a. Butterfly of Digable Planets and a co-conspirator named Tendai Maraire. They've done weird shit like this.)

EDIT: Also, this remix of Kanye West's On Sight by DJ Rashad which gave it the laserblast energy the song was going for originally.

  13. FTL ADVANCED EDITION- I realized that FTL is like a board game. Specifically, a board game where you pilot a board game, and every space you land on starts a new board game in which you play a board game and fight other board games to get out of that board game to move on to the next board game while board games chase you. Sometimes you fight these board games, using the remains of these board games to upgrade your board game. Ultimately the end goal is to reach the last board game of the board game board game, where you pilot your board game around other board games while you attempt to reach the final board game which you fight in three stages. Every time you beat the final board game, it moves to another space in the board game so you have to back track through the board game to get to the final board game again to fight it again, and then you repeat this process one more time to beat the final board game, leader of the board games, in the board game board game with your board game. Board game.

KENTUCKY ROUTE ZERO, ACT 3- I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH, but I can't recommend it until it's all out because right now it's a year between episodes. I mean, that's good, because I find it about that emotionally draining. Rural gothic surrealist adventure. So good.

PIXELJUNK SHOOTER- oh yeah, cutting edge. It was $2.50 on the Humble Store, and I loved the shit out of it every chance I got to play it on PS3. Now I'm playing it for myself and it's the best. Two joysticks and two buttons, everything feels just right. There's even nuanced moves that you can learn just by fooling around with the controls in logical ways. I bet there's something else I haven't figured out yet. That's awesome!

DARK SOULS 2- Rerolled, having a MUCH better time now. Just mid-heavy tank, with a halberd as a primary weapon and a club as a secondary. Doing a dexterity build (my original problem) seems super fucked this time around.

  14. STREAMSDAY. HOLY SHIT there is some awesome shit this week.

Before that, Antwon's "Heavy Hearted In Doldrums" is now available for free through UNIF, the fashion label that has been financing and promoting the record as well as collaborating with Antwon to make somehow even more bizarre Nature World gear than what was already out there. FAIR WARNING: They'll ask for your email to send out the download, and the first picture of that email is the one that made the stream Not Safe For Work, so maybe send that to an email account where no one will go "man what are you doing with this."

    ANYWAYS.

P4K- Nothing can ever fully replace the amazing Vivian Girls, but Kickball Katy's solo work is pretty fucking close. Also, this cover is pretty dang great.
