  1. It really depends what you're in it for. I'd say the only one you need to play is the first one, as like a "see where all of this started" thought experiment. I like 2 the best, but I had a dozen people I was playing that game with (both competitively and in Horde Mode) and that's a big reason why. If you can get four of your friends in on going back/trying it out, by all means go for 2 because Horde Mode is a revelation. If not, just 1 is fine. I think you can get a compilation that's the first two games and DLC?

  2. not even the best song on here

Godsmack is how the wind feels on the face of Mike Winfield on his way home from the bar where he works nights - the worst nights. Don't nobody tip right, and between the marriage offers and the fist fights- and if another mother fucker touch his wrist trying to pull him in to whisper, he ain't making it to midnight.

Don't they know he got a lighter in his pocket, a matchbook in his sock, and a block full of charred skeletons closeted begging to get out? He paused cause he's scared of airing out the thoughts. He can taste it in his mouth the sulfur and bitter carbon, hearing all the burning bodies shout... but no, that was a full lifetime ago and nobody ever has to know. He has never told-

Well, except Ronald... but that don't count. He was sweet and exactly what he needed him to be at the time- wine and candlelight and nice texts at lunchtime. Why had he not called Ron back? Guess there just wasn't a spark.

    Ha!

No no, musn't joke about these things, wouldn't want to disappoint Doc Clark. So many hours on the couch. So many buried memories that take so many tears to get them out. Water hadn't never been a friend-

    Hold up.

Where had he seen that car before? Blue Acura dent on the left rear fender... back again, the sense of Deja Vu- strange things you never shake when you wake up in recovery, but suddenly noticing ash is covering his head cause it's raining from the sky. Dials home on his cell phone and gets no reply.

    What the fuck?!

Where is the babysitter that he overpays? Body takes over and brain becomes disengaged, Michael is running- his house is three blocks away adrenaline compensating for change in age since the last that he ran it. "God dammit!" Mike knows he gotta get home fast as he can- Looks up in the sky, glow's familiar, knows those families died with similar awnings and on and on he keeps going, hits the corner just as he hears the explosion.

Screams comes from the house. "Did you get them out," Mike asking came the crowd that gathered round, tears running down his face- there's that familiar taste. He wishes it would take him to another place. Son and his baby girl in his home and he can't believe that it's gone in a cloud of smoke and he's choking and running forward and hoping against hope that he might find them alive and well when he knows the results too well and he knows that fooled himself and he keeps walking toward the house rather what house is still left, no intention of stopping letting the smoke take his breath. Some strong arm rocks him aside. Mike falls to the ground and cries "WHY WON'T YOU JUST LET ME DIE?!"
"WHY WON'T YOU JUST LET ME DIE?!"

  3. Seriously. If it wasn't for Divekick, MK9 would have no peers as far as fighting games on this set of consoles goes. Stoked to see what they do next.

And it being "cross gen" is awesome because I don't know that I'll ever buy one of the new consoles, so I'm not completely fucked if I want to play the game. Woohoo.

EDIT: Also, hahahaha @ people being mad about Wiz Khalifa in the trailer, as if the pro fighting game community isn't just a giant walking sexist weed leaf

  4. Found XCom for PS3 at Target on clearance for $10.  I'm enjoying it, trying to get a handle on it.  What's the best way to develop your soldiers?  Stick with a core crew, or spread the action around to other soldiers you have?

Half vets and half rookies until you unlock the perk that lets you recruit rookies that skip the first classless level.

I tended to roll with two snipers (one with all-seeing and one with move&shoot), a heavy, two supports (one medic, one smoke-buffing) and an assault, but I play SUPER aggro so my Assault and All-Seeing Sniper always ended up having more experience than everyone. Experiment.

  5. The best/worst part of Watch Dogs is that the protagonist can (and will) steal from cancer patients and charity workers among others.

Well, given that most video games have your character secretly become history's greatest mass murderer (Uncharted, Tomb Raider) it's nice to see a game take a shot at history's greatest bank robber.

  6. THE REST OF THE STREAMS THAT'LL COME OUT THIS WEEK DON'T MATTER.

BEHOLD, THE BEST ALBUM OF 2014.

    clip1.jpg

    "CLPPNG" by clipping.

    1. Intro

    2. Body & Blood

    3. Work Work (f/ Cocc Pistol Cree)

    4. Summertime (f/ King T)

    5. Taking Off

    6. Tonight (f/ Gangsta Boo)
    7. Dream

    8. Get Up (f/ Mariel Jacoda)

    12. Dominoes

    13. Ends

    14. Williams Mix (f/ Tom Erbe)

If you do nothing else, listen to Story 2. It is without exaggeration the craziest composition I've heard in my life to this point. THINK OF THE GROUND THAT HAS TO COVER.

  7. Over/Under on number of times we're told we finally have the technology to watch The Price is Right in our own living room?

I'd take the under regardless, given how many heads got split over at Microsoft in the last few months.

  8. this has already been said but this stuff might be interesting if it wasn't literally the thing volador jr's been doing since like 2012

also: volador happens to be better than devitt at the wrestling part too, so, yeah. tired of devitt.

  9. yeah, uh, I'm on board with "fuck nostalgia" but the show only stopped five years ago, so, this is more "how do we make this better for the time we live in" than "I remember reading, what a crazy kid I was."

ALSO: got my birthday pedal: an ibanez tube screamer. heeheeheeheeheehee...

  10. I was babbling with a friend about this stuff and someone pointed out to me that due to the rules of this exercise, Cave Story is eligible as its first retail release was on the Wii.

So, hey. Cave Story is really, really, really good. The OG "I can't believe this was made by one guy" game. As an individual expression of the joy of video games, it's fantastic, but as an action game it's fucking incredible. Everything feels heavy and responsive.

  11. So, uh...

I made this album called "Wards." It's my fourth one, and I think it's okay, for how dark it can be. Maybe you'd think it's okay too!

You can find it here. Please take time to read the information posted about the album before hitting play. It's the stuff above the "buy now" link.

Also, if you're curious, here's a track-by-track rundown of individual changes made in the editing process. The number on each item is on what listen of the record that note was made.

I'm going to go throw up now.

  12. "2014: The Year Of Vlambeer?" is how I would write a Kotaku headline about the thing I am about to say.

So I've hyped up the almighty LUFTRAUSERS already, and that game is still great. Today because of birthday related things I ended up with a copy of NUCLEAR THRONE. It's a hardcore top-down roguelike shooter, w/ the works (character classes, random maps, permadeath) and it plays awesome and sounds great and has an amazing soundtrack. The best thing about Nuclear Throne is the best thing about Luftrausers: from launching it on steam, it takes under ten seconds to start playing the fucking game. No creepy cutscenes, no epic backstory, no tech engine logos, no tutorial, just fucking pedal to the metal action gaming. Now, Nuclear Throne is early access so I dont know if I'll be able to actually bring it back up for game of the year stuff, but HOLY SHIT this game.

EDIT: Had to add this. This is the BGM for Level 1-1. It's like a Stoner Metal band comprised entirely of different Sega Genesis's.
