  1. Can you not smoke in your oven? Soak a bunch of woodchips and put them in a roasting pan, place a broiler sheet over top with your meat and make a tent out of tin foil and seal it shut as best you can. Bake at 250 F for 5 hours.

Technically I could, but I don't think the wife would be too keen on that. Plus, it was more of a hypothetical question anyway. Like, CAN it be done, you know?

  2. So I see that the Food Sub-folder hasn't been resurrected, and considering that nobody's made any food related posts I guess that's understandable. But I figure we should have something where we can share recipes and whatnot, so here we go.

I'll start with a question I just thought of a few minutes ago. Let's say I have something I want to smoke and then fry, like chicken wings or something. I don't really have the means to do real smoking right now, so I was wondering if I could just add a bit of liquid smoke to the fry oil to accomplish the same thing?

  3. Cross-posted from the wrestling thread. From Bill Simmons' mailbag

Q: Did I just hear on your podcast that you were "never a fan of" Bret Hart? As a lifelong follower of the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be, I'd appreciate an explanation.—Dennis, PhiladelphiaSG: Let's see … no personality, no sense of humor, wet hair, horrible entrance music, hideous wrestling outfit (pink and black?), never tweaked his gimmick, didn't get along with Shawn Michaels, "carried" the WWE during its most boring stretch of the past 40 years, sold out for WCW money, remains memorable only because of (a) the Montreal Screwjob (and the fact that he punched Vince McMahon afterward), and ( B) his phenomenal Ewing Theory credentials (the WWE took off again right after he left). Just thought he was overrated.Quick tangent: In our aforementioned podcast last week, Wesley Morris mentioned his "market corrections" theory and how, sometimes, there can be only one "type" of successful lane for one actor (only with multiple actors vying for it). An example he liked: Mark Harmon never making it as a leading movie actor because Kevin Costner took all of those marquee roles that could have gone to Harmon from 1988 through 1995. Costner was Harmon's market-correction guy, the guy blocking Harmon from having a Costner-like career.Same for Tom Hanks and Michael Keaton — they battled for seven years for "funny/likable comic actor who dabbles in serious roles and will eventually become an A-lister" supremacy, with Keaton gaining an early A-list upper hand in 1989 thanks to the Batman movies. What happened to Hanks? Total tailspin! That was his Joe Versus the Volcano/Bonfire of the Vanities stretch — three years of forgettable movies. When Hanks rallied back in 1992 with A League of Their Own, then Sleepless in Seattle, Philadelphia (Oscar) and Forrest Gump (Oscar), what happened to Keaton? TAILSPIN! As Wesley says, there could be only one.Back to Bret Hart: His market-correction guy was "Mr. Perfect," Curt Hennig, another technically terrific wrestler who hit the WWE in the mid-1980s. I always loved the arrogant "Mr. Perfect" gimmick and thought Hennig was more interesting and entertaining than Hart, but Hart's extended wrestling family (brother Owen, brothers-in-law Jim Neidhart and British Bulldog) morphed into the Hart Foundation family, which stole good spots in every pay-per-view. With the Hitman leading the way, of course. So Hennig ended up being the Keaton to Hitman's Hanks — he never won the WWE title and eventually jumped to WCW. So not only did Bret Hart semi-bore the hell out of us in dozens of pay-per-views, he drove away his more entertaining market-correction guy. I don't hate him for it. Just can't call myself a Hitman fan. Wait, did we just spend four paragraphs on this?

Wow, Simmons really has no idea what he's talking about, does he?

I've been seeing a lot of people pulling for the Bucs on this board and other more sport-centric ones. At first I thought it was just baseball fans being happy that our 20 year unfathomable run of misery has finally subsided.

Now I've come to realize it's just that a whole lotta baseball fans hate the Cardinals.

For me, it's more because piranesi's descents into madness are always entertaining, so I'm more poking him with a stick to get that reaction than hating on the Cards. Them, I'm completely neutral on since LaRussa retired.

  5. Went to the local Buffalo Wild Wings to see the show. There were a couple low points, but the high points more than made up for it. One of the best PPVs in a long time, though I kinda don't like that the IC and Tag Team Titles weren't defended on their #2 show of the year. Thoughts on individual matches are as follows:

    - The Ring of Fire match wasn't terrible, but it wasn't terribly good either. I would suggest that we knew that it wouldn't be, given the nature of the match. Doesn't matter. Any time Bray Wyatt is on, he has my full attention. Period. Had a feeling this was all leading to the Wyatt Family taking Kane away and brainwashing him to be part of the Family. It'll be interesting to see who's next.

    - Cody Rhodes vs. Damian Sandow was a nice little match. I liked how Cody pulled a couple moves from his big brother's playbook, as well as a (kind of) Bionic Elbow at one point. I see Damian demanding a rematch to prove he's the superior of the two, and Cody agrees only after Damian puts the MitB briefcase on the line.

    - The WHC match was excellent. They seemed to be hinting that Christian's days as a wrestler might be numbered in that promo piece. Does anybody know anything about that? Anyway, there were a ton of creative spots here. I liked how Christian was one step ahead of Alberto at points, dodging the top rope enzugiri for example. I always dig Alberto's through the ropes to the outside bump, and that dropkick as Christian was going for the Spear was an excellent counter. Alberto's promo at the end was odd.

    - Natalya vs. Brie Bella was easily the worst match of the night. The Bellas are an emberassment, and Nattie should feel insulted for having to work with them. The match was only 4 minutes or so, but it dragged on and felt like it was twice as long. The Sharpshooter should've been an instant tapout, by the way.

    - Brock vs. Punk was the MOTN, and a definite MOTYC, as many have already said. The place was nuclear hot for this match, and popped huge for every big move. An ECW chant started up after Punk's Diving Chair spot; I was kind of surprised how many actually recognized that as a New Jack spot. Every submission got a huge "TAP! TAP! TAP!" chant, and I was a little surprised Punk was able to pull off the Anaconda Vise (thought Brock's arms might be to big to execute it properly). I didn't like Brock winning, but they told their story masterfully, with Punk's need to get at Heyman being his undoing. I'm thinking this leads to a rematch where Paul won't (in theory) be a factor. Hell in a Cell, maybe?

    - The mixed tag was short and inoffensive. They showed off Big E.'s power set, while Dolph does what Dolph does best, and that's be a human pinball. I think Big E. is going to be getting a secondary title push sooner rather than later. We'll have to see how well he can handle a longer match.

    - Cena vs. DB was awesome! A couple botched spots, probably due to Cena's bum elbow, kept it from just edging out Punk/Brock as MOTN. The bridge spot was nice, as was all the other big points in the match that everyone has already brought up. After the knee strike, the whole place let out a collective gasp when H counted three. No Vince, no Maddox, no anything. Just a clean wid for Daniel Bryan. Initially that made me think that Orton wasn't going to cash in, but as the celebration dragged on, I knew it was coming. The place lost their shit when Orton's music hit, lost it again when HHH Pedigreed DB, and lost it a third time when Orton pinned him. I liked HHH doing Daniel Bryan's "Yes!" pose during Orton's celebration.

2 incredible matches, and two more that were just a step behind that. The two marquee matches were worth the price alone. Can't wait to see how things shake out tonight.

  6.

I feel bad for Rossy. Nobody could have predicted he would have lost his two top stars in under a year.

I really wish joshi could get their TV situations figured out. It really sucks that the only show that is reliable is arguably from one of the worst promotions on the planet. Stardom needs a TV Deal as does JWP, but I'd really just be cool with some 2 hour TV block if nothing else just to show us the big stuff. It's really hard to even remember half the time that joshi still exists because of it.

Who was STARDOM's other top star that left along with Aikawa?

And why do you hate Oz Academy so much? I seriously don't see why it's so bad.

Natsumi Showzuki had to leave because of a spinal injury she suffered in May. It's a shame, too, as she and Kairi Hojo were really popular as a team.

As for Oz Academy, I think it has more to do with Ozaki's matches being garbage wrestling clusterfucks, involving at least three of her cronies as a rule, and that they're always the last match on the card.

  7. I usually don't post if what I have to say has already been said, but I want to add my voice in lending support to you, Natural.

You're one of the best guys on this board, and I'm genuinely saddened by what you're going through. Be strong, man. If you need to talk, I'll be around.

  8. Not sure if I want to type this, but here we go...look at that, typing away. Maybe this is a big FUCK ME, but my mother has been going through another battle with cancer. This time it's in her bones, and there's a worry it will spread to her brain and some vital organs...and I've got nothing. I did this twelve years ago, when she lost all her hair and both breasts and was (to be blunt) gutted like a fish and left for dead, and I watched her overcome and be "cancer free" for ten-plus years.  But what does "cancer free" even mean? If you watch Food Matters, it really means fuck all...which was proven when it came back in a big way in this little woman of 5-foot-nothing.  I did all my wallowing and abused myself chemically and got all this shit out of my system when I was 26 years old. Now I'm 38 and got an extra 12 years with her that maybe I didn't deserve...and I'm not ungrateful for that and I'm not a heartless douche (at least I don't think so), but she is talking about DNR and what's to be done with her ashes and my sister is losing her shit and I'm just trucking away like this is another day of the week: I've got a divorce and two jobs and two kids to raise 3.5 days a week and a new relationship that's kinda tricky and yeah...numb to this whole "mother dying of cancer" gimmick.  There, I said it. Fuck.

    Holy shit, dude :(

People deal with shit in different ways. You don't have to justify your coping mechanisms to anybody. Just keep doing what you do, so long as it works for you.

Stay strong, man. You got a lot of friends here, and we're pulling for you.

  9. And as if getting swept in a doubleheader by Pittsburgh, giving up the division lead to Pitt in the process, wasn't enough, Yadier Molina is now on the DL.

    Poor piranesi....

  10. And it looks like Pittsburgh is going to sweep the doubleheader, which would put them 1.5 games ahead of St. Louis. When was the last time Pittsburgh was in first place on August 1? I can almost guarantee there was no Central Division when that last happened.

  11. What did Sugi do again? Am I remembering correctly he's the one planted weed on Nosawa?

Yeah. One of the Japanese wrestlers that works primarily in Mexico had some kind of grudge against Nosawa, so when Nosawa, along with Io Shirai, who was Nosawa's girlfriend at the time, did a tour of Mexico, the guy had Sugi plant the weed on them. Doesn't look like he got in any legal trouble for doing it, though.

  12.

And, because I'm apparently a masochist, I will be banging my head into the brick wall that is "auditioning for The Voice" once again in about a week and a half. I don't know, man. I mean, never say never and all that, but I think this may be the last time I try this. Here's hoping I don't embarrass myself.  <_<

Kyle - when and where are you doing the try outs?Someone I know is trying to get in today at the ones being held in NYC at the Javits center. Of course she is all I NEVER WATCH THE SHOW BUT SINGING!! FUCK YEAH!!!

I was going to be going Sunday, and yeah it's at the Javits center. But Denese and I discussed it, and the timing is just really bad from a financial perspective, so I'm not going after all. Bummer, but I'll be going for sure next time.

  13.

Will cutting Kennedy, Hardy, Hulkster, Bischoff, and a few others hurt their ratings? Probably not. Are they selling that much merch or house show stuff to make up for it?

I've never seen anyone wearing a TNA shirt. <snip>

I actually had a Curry Man shirt that I got when I went to Hard Justice 2008. But, yeah, I don't recall seeing people wearing TNA shirts at any point.

  14. Camden may be the worst city in the country for all of the issues going on with it. It's really sad to see and I'm not really sure there's anything you can do about it without throwing horrifying amounts of money at it.

This. I lived one town over from Camden for 15, 16 years. It was always nerve-wracking, to say the least, when I had to go there for whatever reason.

So is a city declaring bankruptcy worse than laying off an entire police force? As far as I know, Camden hasn't filed for bankruptcy...yet.

  15. The Nova Corps uniform looks very Judge Dredd-y (the Stallone version). Does this mean we're going to get Rich Ryder at some point? Also, if there's a GotG 2, I'm hoping they introduce Adam Warlock.

And I'm more than a bit disappointed about Hank Pym not being Ultron's creator in the Marvel Movieverse. Like somebody said earlier, why even bother having Hank Pym in the Movieverse now? Ultron is like 90% of Pym's pathos (the other 10%, of course is atoning for beating up Jan)
