Eventually you have to reap what you sow. The Reigns/Rollins/Brock era came about at a time where WWE started making more money than ever before even though classic indicators for success (ppv revenue, house show attendance, ratings) were going down. Fans did everything in their power to voice that the crop of stars WWE stubbornly kept on trying to market were not clicking.  They basically stopped showing up outside of the major shows.

So now you have a generation of top guys  who nobody wants to pay to see and have limited mainstream appeal.

I agree with this but I will put it more on the company than any performer.

Re: WWE stars not being recognized in the mainstream.

Isn't this mainly due to the fact that they purposefully wanted to make the brand bigger than the stars?

Or that's just a WWE excuse as to why their guys aren't as popular as they once were. I'm not even sure how they could put that idea into practice and it seems like it would take more work to accomplish it instead of just pushing their wrestlers.

I think it is more to do with them getting away from being actual pro wrestling. If they just treated it as such and accepted it as such, they would be popular for that. Pro wrestling doesn't really work as well when it's some other sort of meta presentation.

  3. I think Dave's overarching point on the Reigns movie thing is how far WWE has fallen as far as mainstream exposure and he's not wrong. I'm not sure the reaction to one guy in one movie theater is the way to properly gauge that, but if anybody wants to argue that any WWE performer today has mainstream Q like their stars from years past, I'd like to hear it because you know they don't.

Apparently a whole host of WWE folks had to wind sprint across the Atlanta airport to make their connecting flight to Orlando because Delta decided to have the connection leave early.

The thought of the folks who saw that as it happened is making me chuckle.

Maybe they were all just chasing Elias....

AEW is just running Wed, they're going to need AEW House Shows on the weekends if they don't partner with folks.  I think they'd be better off partnering with indies to scout talent.

IIRC, I think that is what I read with them planning on running house shows on Saturday nights.

I don't understand why Netflix is flawless damn near 100% of the time but the WWE Network is such shit. Is it just because Netflix has way more money into it or is it a design flaw with WWE?   Sure,  the new network setup looks like Netflix but it sure as hell doesn't perform like it.

It's all very second rate.  WWE is supposed to be a billion dollar company there's no reason why they can't have this thing running smoothly.

My guess here is that Netflix is all in the can and WWE is live, that has to make it harder. Of course, I stream sports on ESPN/FSN all the time and never really have a problem. It really is inexcusable.

  8. I've been listening off and on to The Smart Wrestling Fan podcast almost since they started. They do a review of Raw/Smackdown each week with some other stuff thrown in. There are two amazing things about it, one is they have done a show every week since 2005. I don't think they have missed a single week. The other is that I don't think i have ever seen anyone on this board or any other board I've ever been on mention them, which seems remarkable in it's own way.

  9. Well dang, not only do I drink wine but I make it, so it's not uncommon for me to have 300 +/- bottles on hand at any one time. I've always thought that if my drinking doesn't affect my life in any negative way, I'm ok with it and it never has. As for people that don't drink, hey, that's just a universe counterbalance to me.

This sounds like the WWE version of the Left Twix / RIght Twix argument.

You know, the fact that on a retro Raw we won't get that commercial that's all--

Like your Nicky, and I'm Dolph Ziggler!

Like your Husky Harris and I'm Bray Wyatt!

or your Fergal Devitt and I'm Finn Balor! (well maybe not that one).

    C'mon Twix, be better.

I would much rather listen to podcasts than watch any contemporary program outside of CMLL.

Funny thing, I was going to bring this up in my last post. Meltzer would hate me because I haven't moved on. Give me anything pre-1994 whether it's watching it or listening to knowledgeable people talking about it forever. I'm giving this AEW thing a chance but I seriously doubt it's going to move me out of the stone age.

  12. The difference with podcasts or whatever is I can listen to them while I'm cutting my grass or driving to work. For me to enjoy wrestling I generally have to be in front of a tv or a computer and I'm not really into even that.

I see wrestling as more of a sport. I want to watch it when it's happening. Almost every other sport is currently being mindful of event length and almost none routinely go over 3 hours except mlb, and they know it's a problem.

  13. Just getting to the end of this and I enjoyed it, however the one thing that remains a mystery to me is that every other form of entertainment in the world is trying to get shorter and wrestling seems to be going the other way. There is no reason any of this should be more than 3 hours long.

  14. Brock is the highest paid wrestler in the company, by most reports. By my calculations via Wrestlingdata, since April 8 2018, he's wrestled 9 times for a total of 53 minutes. That includes walking out and climbing a ladder and last night. The guy is clearly the modern day super worker.
