  1. Fuck! I was a march madness violet who signed up specifically for it, and it's been fun. I feel like the ending needs to be archived somehow and posted to reddit for cheap karma
  2. Don't forget that we can discount any Bryan votes from people who have built sentiments towards him from watching him over many years, as we sit twirling our moustaches in our lairs, shouting 'I was right all along!' and cackling as we watch him rise to the top. To armchair psychologise for a second, jonnylaw seems like the type of guy who sits at a party silently nursing a beer to warm temperature whilst thinking up objective, impartial reasons as to why he's not having a good time.
  3. This is the thing though - your argument rests on the implication that Cesaro is streets ahead of Bryan in-ring. Do you think that or not? Comparing him to Hogan and Rikishi suggests you do but you're dancing around it. If you think that then make a case for it rather than going off on tangents based on things you're imagining I said. And I heard the term 'mechanic' on Austin's podcast and thought it was a nice way of referring to pure in-ring in a vacuum. Which wrestling does not exist within, so people are going to use Bryan's crowd participation as a criteria for separating two excellent wrestlers. Deal with it.
  4. It'd be interesting to compare this year's Cesaro to Bryan of 11-12, when Bryan was in pretty much the same place on the card as Cesaro is now. I feel like Cesaro would win that but then I voted for Bryan because I doubt Cesaro will ever have a year like Bryan has this year
  5. Ignoring the fact that you're name-dropping people who drew shitloads, I was careful to point out that Bryan has had a great year in-ring whilst incorporating certain qualities that resonate with the mainstream. Just read it once more, I think you'll get it the third time. And I do understand what delayed gratification is, I haven't indicated otherwise. Your point in favour of cesaro is pretty shallow in that even in-ring turds do that stuff - all matches bar squashes have counters and momentum shifts. Cesaro is a lot better than just that.
  6. That wasn't my argument at all. Read it again. My point was that wrestling is a live art form and all live art forms rely on some play with expectations. Nobody goes and watches Hamlet and comes out saying "I can't believe they did the 'to be or not to be' speech again!"
  7. Uh... so the argument is Bryan is Hogan? Please tell me more.
  8. Voted for bryan in the end. He's truly on the cusp of greatness, he's 5'8" and a not great promo so you'd have to conclude that this is mainly to do with his ring work. He connects with everyone, and even the most careful attention to detail digs up a few nitpicks. I see the point when people say cesaro is less formulaic etc. but wrestling is best viewed live - people see bryan do the run the ropes -> duck clothesline -> tope sequence on tv, then when wwe is in town they see it live and pop in recognition. All of them. Bryan is this generation's guy as long as they don't fuck it up. Cesaro probably edges bryan as a mechanic, but Bryan is lightyears ahead as a star. Bryan would have to have some massive, massive flaws as a worker for cesaro to overcome that, and no one is arguing that he does.
  9. I think it's worth pointing out that if you watch any old danielson it's obvious that he can mat wrestle and sell in complex and consistent fashion. The simplification of his style is intended. So in some way a vote against bryan is a referendum on wwe main event style... That said, I'm completely on the fence at the moment, cena/bryan was my moty on an emotional level, and cesaro/regal catered more or less perfectly to my tastes on a mechanical level. I tend to weigh heavily towards high points so I'm going to watch both of those again at least before I vote. I'll say this though - the finishing run of cena/bryan was the essence of why I watch wrestling as a grown ass man, a totally transcendent moment where I just wanted him to fucking win. They're both great and I really think whichever way you vote will tell you more about yourself as a fan of the prowres and what you value than about either guy per se.
  10. I feel like limb selling is kind of a dying art and we're gonna have to adjust to that. I may be making excuses but its not like wwe are gonna start booking finishes where people tap to armbars because of cumulative damage. I love that shit in 70s nwa title matches, but it feels like criticising wwe style for its lack of complexity on that level is chastising an apple for not being an orange. I can see why it counts against him but I'd be kind of pissed if cesaro won the final on that basis alone. Still haven't decided on who I'll vote for though...
  11. Was I the only one who thought orton/dust was overrated? I felt it was overly long and lost fire in the second half, and a sprint would have suited the story better. I feel like they're kind of inseperable in tags and liked harper's singles better
  12. I don't think reigns has been tested/succeeded on the level required to beat cena. Let's see what the next uear brings, I could see myself voting reigns in future
  13. I fully expect to vote reigns next year but I just don't think he's fully put it together as yet. I have every confidence that he will make it though.
  14. I like ishii's style in the context of him being a squat bald guy who will never get the belt and doesn't give a fuck.
  15. Regal has a 100% record this year, brock doesn't. I agree with all good words for brock though
  16. I voted for henry rollins. I feel like mark henry has the potential to have an outstanding year still, but this wasnt it. Tremendous though his peaks were, rollins has an almost unmatched weight of high end matches, 6-mans or not
  17. I'm probably weighting my votes towards single guys but I feel like jae should explicitly stipulate that tags count as wrestling matches
  18. When does the poll close? After that hope spot he got yesterday, Cena must be dusting off his shoulder by now surely
  19. This tournament would be more entertaining if we replaced the foreign guys with domestic women. A vote against Okada is a vote for your favorite Diva. #EMMAlution If we're including looks in this, then it's Dean in a walk. Hair: Dean (come on!) slender calves: Dean domestic hips: Dean gentle wrists: Dean sympathetic eyes: Dean best duckface: Dean beguiling mood swings: Dean Note: These are, like, official categories for, like, beauty. I've kept out of this argument because I can see either side, but this is fucking bullshit. Okada is breathtakingly pretty.
  20. Okada. He would have to be considered a massive success on all metrics as the new face of the second biggest wrestling company in the world, even if you're not in love with particular aspects of his selling etc. I get all that but it feels slightly nitpicky to me in the face of what he's achieved. Dean is hard to judge as he hasn't had the same opportunities... I think there's an inherent unfairness in judging people in different positions on the card. While I can absolutely see myself voting a lower card worker in certain, Ambrose would have to have some outstanding singles matches up his sleeve, and he doesn't.
