I think most would agree that this trios run has just done the Acclaimed no favors, the sooner they drop the belts and return to being just a regular tag team the better it'll be for everyone... well everyone not named Billy Gunn I guess.

Yeah. That title change puzzled me. The House of Black was killing it and the Acclaimed absolutely did not need those titles. I’d like to see HOB regain gold next year. Maybe International for Brody and the tag titles for Black & Matt…

Just over a year after this promo, one of these gentlemen is arguably the biggest face in the company while the other one is a midcard heel after losing his steam. 🧐

Yeah. Jericho & Philliam both leeching his heat really set him back. He’s rebounded pretty well with this tag w Big Bill though.

Not every job works the same way.   Draymond Green punched Jordan Poole in the face at practice because they got into an argument.  Do you really believe Jordan Poole had any leverage in that situation where he can ask the front office to get rid of Green?  They had to patch things up for the betterment of the team for that season and move on.  Wrestling is not an office job either.  It's fine that the Bucks decided they didn't want to work with Punk and do an angle but Tony Khan's job as a promoter is to see if things can be worked out (yes, for monetary reasons and also for the health of the work environment in general).  Instead Tony gives Punk his own show where Punk could seemingly tell certain performers they weren't allowed to be on that show and have creative control.  That was somehow Tony's best answer to the issue.

I kinda like the Warriors analogy, except that in the AEW scenario Jordan Poole would have an EVP title that complicates things. I have no idea what the Bucks actually do. Shit, I think anyone here who's ever read a single one of my posts probably knows who I'd pick if I had to fire either Philliam or the Young Bucks. I'm just saying it isn't that simple. TK has apparently chosen to run the backstage portion of his company a certain way, and I don't see any path around firing Punk after repeated demonstrations on Punk's behalf that he didn't care about conducting himself in a professional manor backstage.

Also, for all the flack he gets, I think it's worth mentioning that Tony Khan was able to make Jade Cargill look like a star for 3 years while hiding her weaknesses. IMO, it's some of his best work as a wrestling booker. That's what drives me insane about him. The same guy who saw two fairly nondescript Dark wrestlers and put them together in his head as the Acclaimed and figured out how to make Jade Cargill look so good that WWE grossly overpaid for her can't figure out that sending performers out to do media generally helps with ticket sales.

  4. So, I think I figured out part of the problem; for much of his career, Chris Jericho had a gift for getting just about anything over. The more asinine, the more he was able to nail it. But that "Big Billy Starks" shit was "Rooty Tooty Booty" levels of cringe, and it might be time for either Danielson or Khan to have a talk with folks doing segments with Ricky Starks that going off script is a terrible idea. He served MJF, Copeland, Jericho (2x), and now Omega too. For the record, I don't think there's been some prerogative to bury Starks. I think guys get flustered when they go head to head with him and they reach for the lowest hanging fruit. It's a panic move. He really seems unflappable. Even on the rare occasions when his shit doesn't land verbally, his composure is on point. I don't think some of the veterans are used to that.

That Jericho line was stinky stinky garbage but Omega may also have the lamest and least over catchphrase of all time. What a weeb.

Main event was alright, though it was very paint by number 'big match template' stuff. A big fake epic star ratings match does not play the strengths or either Mox or Swerve.

Careful. Any slander of the Elite is met with intense anger around here. Sometimes…

  6. I think it's a testament to Starks' ability to promo off the cuff that he's flustered guys like Copeland, Jericho and Omega in the last few weeks. I've said it before, and I'll continue to shout it from the rooftops; build around Ricky Starks. Pay him. Strap him up. Make him the face of the company.

This show had a large percentage of "my guys" on it. Starks, Large William, Mox, Andrade, Rush, Swerve, et al. All it was missing from my perspective was Wheeler Yuta and Eddie Kingston. I thought the matches were all pretty good, but there was some rough mic work. Samoa Joe/Hangman Page would be the "kick seven shades of shit out of each other" feud I didn't know I wanted.

Miro is a guy who would’ve made millions as the killer Soviet bloc heel back in the day. Not even sure why they’re trying to give him some complex character when “athletic strong guy wants to kick everyone’s ass” is probably enough, although there are already a number of them in AEW which is why I don’t miss him when he’s gone.

Not for nothing, but I'd be willing to bet they're letting Miro doing whatever character he wants...

This isn't in reference to this board, but i feel like more wrestling fans need to take this mentality.  Not everything is for your taste, just the way something you love might not be for anyone else.

    Nah, that sounds like bullshit.

Kidding. I'm trying very hard not to bitch as much about stuff I don't like.

  9. I liked this opener a lot. RUSH and Mox are two dudes who don't mind laying it the fuck in, and boy did they. I know I talk a lot about shit I don't like, but this was extremely my shit. Looking forward to Mox/Swerve next week. Renee told a funny story a year or so ago about how much Mox marked out when he found out Swerve was Killshot in LU, so it wouldn't shock me to see Swerve go over. I'd be more convinced Hangman was gonna screw Swerve if outside interference meant you forfeit the tournament. I thought the backstage thing with MJF and Page was a bit too much, and it felt like MJF fell back into some bad habits. I'll probably get some things out of order, but who gives a shit?

That intro from the TCM guy was perfection. You could tell he understood the assignment. Also, I was not sold on the "deranged starlet" thing at first, but Toni has committed completely and it's working. Skye Blue has come a million miles. She's a talented young lady. Excited to see Riho.

Swerve/Briscoe was another banger. Mark makes you believe. It never feels like he's out of a fight. Great stuff.

Same for Switchblade/Lethal. I liked that they brought up the history the two have. I feel like we as wrestling fans have been so conditioned to be beaten over the head with what are supposed to be subtle story beats that in some ways this didn't feel like enough, but it worked. Switchblade should've probably been in the other bracket, bc it's hard to imagine one of Mox/Swerve being out.

The Devil thing is getting a bit tedious for me. I think it's shelf life is about up. Let's move on to the next phase after World's End.

Also, this Rod Strong/Kingdom thing is not my cup of tea. I have no sentimental attachment to anything from ROH in their era, so I don't feel any kind of way about them being on tv now. Strong yelling everyone's first name is funny, though.

The main event cooked. I feel like AEW takes some unmerited criticism for bringing in ex WWE guys. I mean yeah, they bring in ex-WWE guys, but how can you watch this and not think that's a good idea? It would be one thing if they did the TNA thing and just shoved every ex Fed guy to the top of the card, but that isn't what's happening. Christian Cage is probably doing better TV work than any American wrestler this year, and I only issue that caveat because I don't speak Japanese. I wouldn't know if someone is torching their opponents verbally over there. Anyway, Nick Wayne's Mom (has got it going on) did the thing we all thought, but that doesn't make it dumb. TAFKA Edge con-chair-to'd her son. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if this is a way to bring Beth in for a one-off, but I have no idea if Nick Wayne's Mom (has got it going on) is trained or whatever. She certainly appears to fit the archetype of a female wrestler from yesteryear. If Nick Wayne's Mom (has got it going on) isn't trained, just switch out Taya Valkyrie when no one's looking. I guarantee no one can tell the difference.

Good shit this week. I'm a little pissed I didn't get to see Samoa Joe stomp fools into the crust of the earth, but you can't have everything, I guess.

What is the reason they built up a match between Keith Lee and Shane Taylor on AEW TV and the match never took place?

I get the sense that Keith Lee getting medically cleared from week to week isn’t a given. Covid did a number on him.

  11. After getting some sleep & sobering up, the layers to this cm punk return are massive and fascinating. It doesn’t look like any of wwe’s talent were smartened up, and while I think Seth was working at the end of the broadcast, there’s a lot of bad blood to be worked through. I know Cody has said several times that he didn’t leave AEW over cm punk, but Cody’s also the guy who told the “locker room leader” story to a room full of wrestling fans. I don’t think there’s any love lost between those two guys. WWE is clearly a different animal than AEW, in that they have the corporate structure necessary to insulate themselves from the trouble punk is gonna bring eventually. There’s no downside for the Fed, other than annoying their top guys.

They sent him home for like 9 months last time around... this time they fired the guy knowing that Survivor Series is in his home town. Tony just gave the WWE another top guy at a time when the perception is that WWE is up and AEW is down. Maybe CM Punk just 1996 Pillman'ed Tony Khan without getting into a Humvee wreck. Maybe things just came together magically.

For the record, We're at exactly 90 days since Wembleymania.

What it looks like with Tony is that WWE guys and guys who couldn't be employed by the WWE a few years ago during the most recent Vince reign of terror went to Tony for a job, and some of them have either found a way out of a job or otherwise made it obvious they're going back with HHH around. So Tony looks like a rube with a checkbook either way, doesn't he?

I guess for the record, the return wasn't discussed until this week. But hey, they lied on other things on this story so it wouldn't surprise me to read if that story wasn't exactly true.

Anyways.. I guess the angle is gonna be Seth Rollins vs CM Punk for the Raw title in a few months.

Of all the viewpoints, this is one. Tony improved his team when big name free agents were available. That's what competent sports GMs do. Black thanked TK later for not releasing him when he asked. I don't buy that tons of AEW guys are unhappy. Maybe Andrade. And that dude is never happy. I give Phil a year before he's storming the Impact Zone because he ran afoul of the wrong people in WWE. You can't reward bad behavior like WWE just did. A pop in Chicago isn't worth taking a big creamy shit in your own locker room. Tony should sign Mustafa Ali and bring Mercedes and Ronda around the women's division. That's a trade that's more than worth it. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck Phil.

I'm not a mod, but I can't imagine expressing anger at a booking decision is enough to get you a time out. Maybe don't actually kick Tony Khan in the nuts, though, should you ever have the opportunity.

Trust me, if you could get in trouble for that here, I’d be on death row…

  14. I’ll review the actual ppv later, but right now I just want to say that in 1996 my dad took me to the Omni for my first wrestling show. It was Nitro. Sting wrestled on that show. Last night, my dad, my son and I sat together and watched Sting on pay per view. My son, who’s 3, loves to yell “big boys fight!!!” during the show. It was a blast.

I can certainly understand the POV of those who have not been missing the Elite 'melodrama' lately, but I'm of the opinion that it's warranted - one of the things sorely missing from the show IMO is having that one, overarching angle that everything else branches off of, like in the early days when everything was built around Hangman's eventual coronation. Unless those guys are somehow going to be shoe-horned into the MJF/Cole/BC issue, which is probably the current closest thing we have a 'main' story like Hangman's tale, I think this is actually probably the best use of the Elite.

    Wait... is Kenny the devil?

I think the issue is that the overarching melodrama only works if you give a shit about the characters involved, and I question whether or not the appetite is there for a Kenny & the Jackson’s as Roman and the USO’s tribute. I think there was 4 years ago, tbh. Now it doesn’t really feel like the company is built around the Elite anymore. But, if it’s choosing between this or having them hold all the belts for another year+ and driving the show into another season of “pretense wasteland,” I’ll take this 10/10 times.

  16. Moxley books his own stuff, presumably. Can't remember him doing anything that stupid.

Yeah, parts of this show were great. The EVPs (?) getting to book themselves as Bruiser and the Brodie's wasn't one of those parts. That street fight really needed Ospreay or Guevara to bring something different. That Hangman/Swerve segment is an example of shit you won't get anywhere but AEW in a good way. I dug the opener and that Mariah May segment, too.

A fun reveal would be FTR, Wardlow and Spears as the ninjas. But none of those are a big enough headliner to be the devil.

I was coming here to post that. I don’t think that was the original plan but Cole’s extended IL trip would facilitate an audible. I think the worst possible outcome (but maybe also the funniest?) would be the members of Retribution that aren’t under contract anymore. Ali, Shane Thorne, tafka Mace, & MMart…
