(by PHIL RIPPA)
I love me some 2 Cold Scorpio. I truly think people think his career ended after the ECW days and it might as well have. But still – there is plenty to watch and enjoy because Scorpio is the god damn best. Oh and just for my sanity – I am spelling it 2 instead of Too.
To better sum up – here is what Dean wrote in one of those not-DVDVR, kinda sorta a Driverette things
“Too Cold Scorpio is the best wrestler at ECW and he should be wrestling worldwide. He carried the adequately talented Shane Douglas and the psychologyless Sabu each to Match of the year Candidate this year. Notice how much was Too Cold in the Douglas match and you will see that Douglas is working his ass off and Too Cold is making his spots look spectacular (especially the sling shot suplex onto the guard rail.) Scorpio can make a good wrestler look great and can settle a great but disorganized wrestler down to the point of creating a great match as opposed to one filled with just highspots. If Scorpio was in a bigger organization right now he would be recognized as being in the list of top twenty workers in the world.”
236) 2 COLD SCORPIO vs. CHRIS BENOIT – WCW SUPERBRAWL III (02/21/93)
There are a lot of Benoit/Scorpio matches around this time period with them working random armories and high school gyms and farms and abandoned missile silos. I am picking this one just for the ability of WCW to go “Hey here are two guys you kinda sorta know” in a match on a PPV and they tear shit up. (Opposed to the WCW “Here is a Nitro match with random luchadores you kinda sorta know ripping shit up”. Get over your Benoit hate and watch this.
237) 2 COLD SCORPIO/STING/RICKY STEAMBOAT vs. HOLLYWOOD BLONDES (Steve Austin/Brian Pillman)/RICK RUDE – WCW (05/06/93)
This is the early 90s WCW version of what we get now on NXT House shows. There is so much heel gold in this and all the faces are happy to play along. Just 6 guys who love their craft having a ball somewhere in California. And boy to the people filming this hate heels. God Bless you wrestling.
238) 2 COLD SCORPIO vs. BARRY WINDHAM – WCW CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS XXVIII (06/17/93 – NWA Heavyweight Title)
Ah the Barry Windham NWA Title Run. What could have been. 1993 is a weird year for me in my wrestling viewing as half of it was my Freshman year of college and that transition and lack of cable options in the dorms made it a challenge keeping up with the wrestling world. (Of course – for better or worse – I also found RSPW around the same time.) So I go back and keep catching up on things that I missed on the time. So yeah – Scorpio/Windham will always be a priority view just because of who is in the match. This is often overlooked as it also took place on the same show as the Horseman (Flair/Arn) vs. Hollywood Blondes 2 out of 3 Falls match. (These two also have a TV match from either Sat Night or the Pro that is good view.)
239) 2 COLD SCORPIO vs. BOBBY EATON – WCW CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS XXIV (08/13/93)
IT’S 2 COLD MOTHERFUCKING SCORPIO vs. BOBBY MOTHERFUCKING EATON!!! God it is criminally short.
240) 2 COLD SCORPIO vs. SHANE DOUGLAS – ECW HARDCORE TV (8/30/94 – NWA Title Tournament Finals)
Historical Significance Alert: You are watching this because at the conclusion of the match, Shane Douglas throws down the NWA title and ECW as we know it was born. There is nothing wrong with the match (mostly due to Scorpio’s doing. Like he does realize he can use his arms when picking up a guy in the Electric Chair position, right?) The match was released on that WWE ECW Unreleased DVD Vol 1 and it can also be found on the Network.
241) 2 COLD SCORPIO/CHRIS BENOIT/TITO SANTANA vs. LA PARKA/JERRY ESTRADA/BLUE PANTHER
Y’all realize that there were other matches on the When Worlds Collide PPV besides the Mask/Hair match right? As far as I know this is the only time Blue Panther and 2 Cold Scorpio were in the ring together and they are two of my all time favorites so this has a special place in my heart. Also watch for Parka’s awesome entrance gear and Chris Cruise and Mike Tenay burying Tito Santana’s lack of experience in lucha.
242) 2 COLD SCORPIO vs EDDIE GUERRERO – ECW (4/8/95 – ECW TV Championship)
Dean will always tell you about the time he got to see Eddie Guerrero live in the ECW Arena. I think – THINK – it was this match. Either way – watch it.
243) 2 COLD SCORPIO vs. SABU – ECW CYBERSLAM 1996 (02/17/26 – ECW TV TITLE)
(That is the whole show. This match starts at basically 75 minutes in)
Sabu is another guy that Scorpio has wrestled a million times in various places – including that time he wrestled Sabu under a mask as the Black Wazuma (Man – I so should have cheated and included that match too and claimed that it was two different guys). Anyway – this probably is the best match between the two. I say probably because it has been forever since I have watched a lot of the ECW stuff and for fuck’s sake it all kinda blends together. But this is Scorpio and Sabu going 30 minutes in a match that again gets forgotten because the rest of the card saw like 5 guys make heel turns, Franchine get destroyed via Total Elimination (the clip that was shown forever on ECW TV. Stay Class Heyman.) and Brian Pillman showing up.
244) BLACK WAZUMA vs. DAIKOKUBO BENKAI – TOKYO PRO WRESTLING (06/24/96)
AH-HA! Didn’t have to cheat! Here is Scorpio as Black Wazuma. Don’t get your hopes up or anything as Benkai is not very good. But hey – the match linked is the whole show so stick around for Sabu and Abdullah the Butcher carving each other up.
245) FLASH FUNK vs. OWEN HART – WWF SHOTGUN SATURDAY NIGHT (07/12/97)
This isn’t breaking news or anything but Scorpio’s best opponent during his regrettable Flash Funk run was Owen Hart. They have a few good encounters with this one arguably being the best (Heck – this might arguably be the best Shotgun Saturday Night match ever). Added benefit of the match being in Canada so having a pro-Owen crowd.
246) 2 COLD SCORPIO/DOUG WILLIAMS/ACE STEEL vs. BISON SMITH/LOW KI/GLADIATOR (Mike Awesome)
There used to a be a lot more NOAH out in the wild but the pickings are pretty slim now. Still this is enjoyable. I love the WAR nature of the Ki, Bison and Awesome team. And you know it had to be a dream for Ki to be working against Scorpio. Also – Scorpio has clearly shaken off the WWF stink and has began his transition into wily veteran.
247) 2 COLD SCORPIO/JUSTIN CREDIBLE vs. GREAT MUTA/NOSAWA – JCW BLOODYMANIA (08/12/07)
Everyone should have to suffer through a match called by the Insane Clown Posse at least once. At least this one has Scorpio and the broken down shell of the Great Muta. Fuck Juggalos.
248) 2 COLD SCORPIO vs. NECRO BUTCHER – IWA MID SOUTH (08/17/08)
Scorpio’s tour of scummy indy promotions continues. This at least provides him with a much better opponent. It is also FAR BETTER than, well pretty much any other match in 2008. And still so very weird. Scorpio is so not afraid to match Necro punches to the face with punches to the face. Scorpio’s time in IWA Mid-South was really good for a guy who I am pretty sure most had written off at that point.
249) 2 COLD SCORPIO vs. VORDELL WALKER – PWX Wrestling (sometime in 2011)
IT IS 2 COLD MOTHERFUCKING SCORPIO vs VORDELL MOTHERFUCKING WALKER!!! And it is really fucking good.
250) 2 COLD SCORPIO vs. DARK STORM vs. PABLO MARQUEZ – COASTAL CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING (08/24/13)
CCW is Pablo Marquez’s fed and if you look at show results – he clearly uses his connections to bring in his friends to work random shows. And I am sure you really have to twist guy’s arms to work shows in Miami. Here – Scorpio comes in and gladly teaches Dark Storm a think or two. I love – LOVE – Scorpio in the old timer “I am going to beat the shit out of you” role. Wish this wasn’t a three way but it wasn’t as bothersome as three ways can get.
