I can understand illnesses as the last thing you want is a bug ripping through the whole locker room, especially when most of them (Stardom, at least) travel on the same bus.
For Maika specifically I'm not sure when she got the injury but I can understand it from last year as it seems like she & Tam were the ones who really rallied things after the departures, so maybe she felt like that outweighed her personal circumstance. But they could have easily written her out for a while after the no DQ match against Tora in December, would've given Tora a boost too.
They've got quite a few at the moment off the top of my head:
Ami Sohrei worked through a knee injury for 2 years like a lunatic, she's been out getting close to a year
Xena did her ACL, getting on for 9 months
Matoi has apparently had to have knee (?) surgery since going down earlier this year so there's no telling how long she'll be gone
Anne Kamiya has had to have hand surgery so she'll prob be out at least another few weeks
Natsupoi and Momo are definitely working through ankle injuries (and probably making them worse)

7,503 attendance for All Star Grand Queendom. Smashes the company record by 2k or so.
SpoilerCertainly feels like the end of an era with both Tam retiring and Mayu very heavily hinting at leaving. You could argue those will hurt more than the departures last year, but equally they're in a better place to handle them now.

There might be some mistranslating going on but I've seen it stated that Naito wanted to work more than NJ were prepared to offer - sounds like maybe they wanted to shift him to more of a Puro Grandad deal and he wasn't willing
I guess there's probably a difference of opinion over whether they could still justify paying him like a main eventer given his clear deterioration - but at the same time he sells tickets & merch like nobody else
Ultimately again it comes down to them not planning ahead properly. Okada & Naito both going out without putting over the next generation is disastrous
-
Oh Despy's 100% in that conversation. He just gets overlooked b/c they refuse to give the Juniors equal treatment/standing. But he's been on a tear, realistically for a few years now, even with a messed up knee.
Douki getting injured at WK is one of the great 'What If's as it sounds like they had some crazy stuff planned that could've stolen the show
-
Solid enough show but my goodness they need to take the hint on Shota. He needs a full rebuild, not 5 minutes out of the spotlight and then another title shot. People are not buying it.
Takeshita-Oiwa and Goto-Finlay were very good. UE and Hiromu did a decent job Weekend at Bernies-ing Naito's corpse - I'm a little surprised Newman seems ok b/c at one point he bounced off the top of his head, which did not look pleasant
I won't even get into Sanada, HoT etc. Finlay apparently challenged them to a cage/dog pound/whatever the official name for it is
-
Given what day it is, doubtful

Unfortunately Masa Takanashi got injured in the DDT main and had to be taken to hospital with a possible serious neck injury - hopefully it is not as bad as it seemed and he can recover

I predicted Maki and Miyu losing their tags soon...
I just didn't want Hyper to win those tags. Nothing against her. Some fans bet on these things. She is hyperetty to me.
Raku won the belt Pom had, the All Asia Women's Title.
Miu lost her match.
Arai lost her match.
Endo lost her match. The Bee retained her International Princess Championship.
Mizuki won and retained the POP title.
I liked most of the show but have some nitpicks
Spoiler-Miu-Willow felt like the match they had planned for years ago with no updates, but Miu's not that person anymore. Felt like the wrong person won. Not to be "AEW bad" but I'd be very surprised if this gets evened out, in which case I'm not sure how Teej benefits here.
-Mizuki's lack of/inconsistent selling of the leg really took me out of the main, sadly. You can't limp around outside then break into a full sprint to run the ropes and throw dropkicks & stomps with no sign of injury, it doesn't work that way (well, clearly it does as that's what she did. Didn't work for me though brother)
-I'm not a huge Misao fan either, she was a bit sloppy in this but it feels part of a bigger story beat with her not being able to win without losing the mask, so I'm reasonably happy to see where they go with it.
Plus if I'm honest, while 121000000 are good it does feel like they're in a weird space where they've outgrown the company yet aren't graduating, so they're like the old kids hanging around the school gates trying to look cool in front of the young 'uns.

Personally I thought ZSJ vs Oiwa and Taichi vs Kidd were pretty good and worth a watch. Not MOTYC candidates or anything but decent matches in their own right

I'm sure people will be aware by now but maybe not, yesterday was scheduled to be the first night of the New Japan Cup but before the show started one of the ring posts broke, so it turned into an extended talk show (fans all got refunds)
First day of the Cup is therefore today
Oh, and Chris Charlton returned from suspension on Thursday's show

Reminder for those interested Sareee-ism happens on Monday, ft. Sareee vs Syuri. Should be good.
Barb Sasaki's anniversary show is also Monday & from a joshi perspective will have Suzu Suzuki vs Rina Yamashita in a no DQ TLC match, as well as Mayu Iwatani/Hazuki/Saya Iida vs SLK/AZM/Mei Seira falls count anywhere bring your own weapons match
-
It's a very messy way to get to the place this was always heading (so typical Tam Road...)
I think they'll just about get away with it but they've skirted awfully close to the line
-
Rina - SLK was indeed very good. Wing*gori vs Crazy Star also great, I would quite happily watch a best of 3 between those teams.
SpoilerI don't know where they're going with the stip, Tam has invoked the ghost of Utami in the press but it's hard to believe either would legitimately be leaving and they'd do it for a match with a week's notice, even if it is Korakuen
I've seen some people theorise Kurara will win the Cinderella and 'wish' the loser back but since she still doesn't have a legit singles win on a mainline Stardom show that would be quite a stretch (and awful bait & switch)
The obvious answer is TLD but they've both hinted they don't want a time limit, sooooo...?

Deathmatch Suzu returns (kind of) - Suzu Suzuki vs Rina Yamashita in a 'no DQ TLC match' at Barb Sasaki's anniversary show on 10th March
No clue about streaming, it has the same folks supporting it as did the Despy invitational, so it might end up as a PPV.

Koguma will be the death of God's Eye

I forgot to add the Mayu v AZM was 5 minutes of perfect sprint. Someone recommended the Mercedes Hazuki so we watched it right before wrestle kingdom but this one blew the Mercedes match out of the water. I’m not really a stardom watcher but maybe I should.
It's a pretty good time to start, they just had their big year end show and they're riding a lot of momentum right now.
The year end and new year shows had English comms in case that helps - it's not on every show but since about October-ish Walker Stewart (the New Japan English comms guy) has been doing the bigger shows. Just try to ignore the co-comms as they're dreadful..
-
Kenoh had a decent appearance at DDT's end of year show too if anyone is in that kind of a mood.
Tl;dr he basically said he was too good for DDT and Shinya Aoki took offence. There's a younger guy on each side so it's a tag. But Kenoh is just in full dickhead mode and it's good stuff.

Spoiler
The crowd was verrrrry into Gabe-Yuta, personally I think it might be slightly too early but they've got to get going at some point and they may as well ride Gabe's momentum
Oiwa is def getting there as well
I'm not putting any kind of upper limit on Fujita's future, he's got it, and arguably more than others who get spoken about a lot more
Poor Shota being left on his own with his tattered belt, sums him up right now

Much more enjoyable than I thought it would be, but again, loooong show
SpoilerWomen's 4 way very good, I hope it actually leads to something for Momo rather than just stringing her along
I popped for Soberano (HE IS RISEN) and Dorada, not gonna lie. The story of everyone gunning for Despy was fun and they pulled it off well enough.
I will have to watch it back but my initial reaction during Mercedes' match was she was not selling near enough. Like 90% of her offence is knees and about 80% of Mina's is targeting the knees (including the ability to seemingly produce new varieties - truly the Baskin Robbins of the F4) - felt like it should've been a much more integral part of the story with Mone having to go deep into her bag of tricks.
I am not a Finlay fan but fair play, he had 2 strong performances and threw himself all over the place for my enjoyment.
Takeshita - Ishii was about what, and as good, as you'd expect. Any other night it would have a case for MotN. I know Ishii is slowing down but goodness he can still go when he wants (anyone who hasn't seen his match vs Yuki Iino in DDT just before Christmas should do so, more of the same)
Tag match was basically a Bucks showcase mixed with Jeff Cobb attempting to out-Naito Naito in real time.
I dunno what you do with Perry but this was not the place, should've been cut.
Kenny was Kenny, about as high praise as I can give. Gabe held his end up to be fair, match was a little messier than I would've liked but then he wouldn't have had a chance otherwise. I popped for the abdominal stretch.
I love Zack to bits but that match was very much the post-credits scene of the show.

It's good to see that Mifu did well, I figured she'd do well but based on social media and this comment, it looks like she even went above my expectations and I'm glad to see that. I'll miss seeing her in Ice Ribbon, but TJPW really is the better fit for her.
I won't spoil in case anyone has plans to watch but personally as someone seeing her for the 1st time, yep, I see it. I can definitely see her piecing something really good together with someone like Rika (it will likely be a while yet though)

Spoiler
I probably need to sleep on it but being there the main did feel very long (I hope they did not add time). I'm finding it hard to put into words but it felt to me like they couldn't have the match they really wanted as Shota's character is still not clear and the crowd still doesn't really know how to react to him.
Like, if he'd been full sympathy babyface, great, Zack is right there and can tie him in knots, get the crowd behind him with submission escapes, easy peasy. If he'd gone full dickhead heel then again, not so difficult, Zack has a lot of support and he can work from underneath if he needs to if Shota starts dropping him on his head or using questionable tactics, etc.
But it wasn't one thing or the other. Like he was having his leg pulled apart and at one point the camera caught him as he looked like he was falling asleep (?) - at that point people around me were laughing rather than actually being invested in what was happening. And there was no real great rally in the crowd to support him. Equally he started laying it in to Zack a bit and Red Shoes had to admonish him but then nothing came of it.
Anyway, I'm just sulking AZM didn't win. Happy for the boy Fujita though.
